Yes agreed Adam, that would certainly make more sense. To be fair there's been such little information available about this car so I think people have started to make it up themselves! It's great to finally see some good videos like yours, thanks again.
Thanks for posting the video, Adam, and especially for the information about the petrol flap! We get our 330e tomorrow and if we hadn't seen your video we'd definitely had a panic on the petrol station forecourt the first time we filled it up! I am glad you are enjoying the car - we are very much looking forward to ours.
Great!! Christmas has come early , A REVIEW OF AN ACTUAL CAR. My comes in July ( alpine white sport with privacy glass) Will be following your comments avidly , That blue is great . Thanks for the fuel filler info
+Kevin Duncan it was a tough choice between blue and white for me. Both stunning. Anything you were wondering in particular? Going to post a video of the car at night next because it looks beautiful!
+Adam Palethorpe Hi , I appreciate you haven't had it long and it might be difficult to assess but my main interest is the range achieved on pure electric mode. I know BMW quoted approx 22miles . Some EV websites have rated it closer to 13 miles. I will be interested to hear about what you actually achieve . Many Thanks
+Kevin Duncan I've done this already.. I managed 19 miles driving VERY economically.. When i picked the Demo up the chap said 14 is realistic and my heart dropped as I need it to get me to work 19 miles away.. however it JUST managed to do it! MaxEdrive and Eco Pro with air blowers totally off(it makes a difference) hope that helps
+Kevin Duncan your car is exactly the same spec as mine - it looks great in the arctic white with the privacy glass. I've had the 330e for a few weeks now - can guarantee you'll love it!
Thanks for the video. Build date for mine is 11.04.16 so should have it in a few weeks. The tip on the petrol cap should save me an embarrassing first stop at the petrol station!
+Mike Formby Some people have reported it working ok and not getting stuck, but others have also said the same thing happened. Handy to know either way! Congrats, you're gonna love it.
+BMW 330e thanks. It's a real beauty. Everyone has fallen in love with it. Deffo a special car and really happy with my choice. It's a lot of fun to drive especially with the additional weight. It even sounds good to be honest.
BTW, you can subscribe to my channel if you'd like. I'm getting my 330e M Sport (black/black) delivered in early June. I'll post videos of my car as soon as I take delivery.
+Adam Palethorpe I watched through the whole video. Did you try clicking the unlock button on the keyfob *twice*? If I'm not mistaken, clicking it once will only open the driver's door, but will leave everything else locked, including the fuel filler door.
+BMW 330e yeah I've changed the settings to open all the doors too. The dealer said you HAVE to do it that way but he didn't say what would happen if I didn't lol. It might be an odd fault with mine but it does look as though the spring on the flap is too strong and stops the pin from retracting when the flap is partially open (as suggested by the other guy in the comments). The flap just won't open without pressing the button in the cabin. I was just an idiot and pressed the flap because I'm used to it on the 520d
Adam, About charging rates, standard cable (the one that comes with the normal UK or EU), charges up to 10amps. The fast charge cable, the one with two mennekes sockets (male and female) can deliver up to 32amps, but I believe 330e only gets up to 16amps. Therefore, with a wallbox you get +. 50%-60% faster charging time compared to the standard cable. What this car does not have (and not many plug-ins, maybe only the outlander phev) is a DC fast charger, the one with the two aditional pins you mention on a previous comment. Great video! thanks for the upload.
+alxzola That's very useful info thanks. So my only let down with the car at all is that it doesn't have the ability to use the DC fast charger. I can live with that.
I've got a demo of a 330e today, my own one is due in April/May. I did a mix of rural and city driving on max EDrive and got 19 miles on pure electric.. I was driving like miss daisy however and had Eco Pro mode on as well as no air conditioning.. I got around 50/60 mpg on the return journey with that battery hovering around 5-8%, its very clever because it still used the battery in heavy traffic when moving slow which helps the mpg and then when your using the engine it charges the batteries for the next time you can use electric only. i.e when in heavy traffic again. The fuel flap works differently on this one, I've tested it and if i "forget" to press the button and push the fuel flap in, it opens slightly but is still locked in position.. if I then press the button the flap then opens.
+Dean Ward Thanks for sharing that. It looks like it might just be an iffy flap on my one. I'm pretty sure the guy at the dealership did the same as me and it still opened like you say yours did. I have tested mine 4 times since and it just does not like being pushed before the button is pressed. No biggie. I think it's a really well put together package. Glad you enjoyed yours and your MPG figures are decent. I'm doing a test this week but i'm pretty sure on my 7mile commute I can do electric one way and then drive in save the other and it will charge me up enough to do the next days 7mile from the Save mode alone. Very smart.
Thanks for the info, not many been delivered in the UK yet I guess. I ordered mine mid Feb for July delivery !! A driving video would be good, especially at night.
I have a question about the preconditioning in the cabin for someone in the know?? - During the cold weather I did it and it warmed my interior up nicely and even defrosted my window - lovely! And today I did it in the UK as it's pretty warm (for once!) and it made it icy cold - brill! I don't get it though... I'm sure I read that it just gets the car to 21Deg C which is comfortable. It seems it actually turns it into a fridge on cool days and makes it warm on cold days, which is great. Anyone else experienced that?
330e RECALL: Just letting people know that today (19th Jan) BMW called me about a problem with the 330e models that is affecting the heater unit. My car is going in next week to have the software updated. Apparently it's only the 330e. You'll probably get a call soon if you have one.
Adam Palethorpe great video!! How are you getting on with the car? What range do you typically get from the batteries? Thinking of part exing my 320d for one in September :) Thank you
hi Adam - great video. quick question on public charging; did you need to buy a separate charging cable to use on public, type 2 charging points or can you use the cable supplied with the car (and apologies if you already answered this and I missed it.....!)?
+Sharon Ravey I have used it on 3 public charge points using the cables coming OUT of the public charge station. I didn't even know about the other type until last weekend. My supplied charger wouldn't have worked with them. It looked like you needed a different cable, where one end connects into the charge point (looks like a caravan socket type of connection rather than 3pin plug that's on our cable) and the other end would obviously be the connection that plugs into your car. To be honest public charging takes as long as it does at home so I never really feel the need. I hardly charge it anyway, once or twice a week at work. Going to start charging it more once I get a better socket fitted at work though.
thanks Adam - pretty much as I thought! looks like that's another couple of hundred pounds to splash out when I get the car in a couple of weeks..........
Very through video. If I were to spec my own 330e it would be similar to this configuration. The M-sport package & the blue paint looks beautiful on this car. On the other hand, that is one finicky fuel cap release...
How strong is the regen when you take your foot off the gas pedal, can the amount of regenative breaking be adjusted like the Mitsubi PHEV???I love my i3 really nice one foot driving as hardly ever use the old fashioned break pedal
+john duquemin it surprised me how strong it was actually it is actually and I thought it was a hindrance at first but then realised it's very handy. I've not found a way to adjust it but I'm pretty sure (although I could be wrong) that when you have it in the different driving modes (sport+, sport, comfort, Eco) it adjusts the resistance. I also read some reviews that said the brake pedal took some getting used to but I've not had a problem with that at all.
Zakariya ali I had both but if I picked again I would have the 330e. The 330e was much more fun to drive. I had the 520d not in msport, it was very nice still but I did prefer the 330e so that’s what I’d choose.
My daily round trip for work is around 38-40 miles with no charger at work but I can charge at home. House is pre-wired for EV. About 90% of the drive is motorway. Should I stick with a 320d or go 330e ? Which will be more fuel efficient?
I guess an alternative for the sticky fuel flap is get someone else to push against the filler flap whilst pushing the release button which should allow the release to retract.Pretty bad design on BMW's part. I think VW got it right when they used a rotary cam type catch that doesn't get stuck. That quirk aside though, lovely motor, looking at getting one myself soon!
So this morning after just 280 or so miles I got a message saying Coolant level was low. I checked it and it was just a smidge below the min. The second coolant tank was bank in between the min and max markings. Spoke to a dealer but can't take it in until next week (not even sure it needs to go in) and after speaking to someone who had a new F30 last year from BMW they had a similar thing after 700 miles - turned out that it was air that had made its way out of the system from manufacturing, after adding a but more it hasn't happened again since. There's a fair amount of info online about this but though I would mention it anyway. If it drops and I get a message again i'll be taking it back to the dealer.
+Adam Palethorpe Hey, great vid, I picked my 330e up last weekend and this has helped a lot! I have unfortunately been hit by this coolant low error message as well, after about 300 miles. Spoke to my dealer who advised I don't top it up and to bring it into them. Seems like a lot of faff just to top up the coolant, so I'd like to do it myself. What I was wondering though, is what do I use to fill it up? After a bit of research online it sounds like I should just use antifreeze, is this what you used? Thanks!
+Adam Dougal mine needed so little I just popped a bit of water in there. It really wasn't much at all. About a quarter of a tea mug is all it needed. I'm almost certain mine was just an air bubble making its way out.
Cheers for the video, I've ordered one for deliver end of June, same spec as yours, Estoril Blue but with Coral Red interior. I notice from your video that despite the car coming with extended storage, it looks like you lose the handy flapped storage on the right hand side of the dashboard where the silly petrol flap button is now! - that't really irritating as it doesn't tell you that on the build your BMW on the website! I've desperately been trying to find a dealer that has a demo but I can only find one in Yorkshire and I live in Oxfordshire...I've placed an order subject to test drive but as this will be my 7th BMW I'm sure it will be fine - especially as it will save me over £2,000 in tax!
+Duncan Craig I didn't really notice that i'd lost that. I don't think they've made it up elsewhere but I can take a look. They really are rare at the moment and I found that dealer and website info is a non starter on this model. They just don't have the info and knowledge. I was under the impression I could use the app to head the car in the mornings. Technically I can, I tried it today. It's not that effective though as you can't tell it the temperate and I think it just hits 21 or 21 degrees C. Although it was a lot better than getting into a 2deg C car today and it helped defrost the window a bit I guess . I'm certain you'll love it. I had a 2012 520d before this and I much prefer this car. It feels a lot sportier and the silence of the EV is nice, then the sound of the petrol engine is actually nice too when you give it some. Pulling away from junctions feels very swift. One thing I love is the start/stop. It doesn't annoy me in this car as it did the 520d (which is good as there is no button to turn it off!!). It actually just drops the car into electric mode so you still pull away instantly and then the petrol takes over again. I don't have the heated seats that I had in the 520d, I wouldn't say I miss them too much but my GF keeps complaining about not having them lol
+Adam Palethorpe - I'm under the impression that it needs to be plugged in for it to work? Did you get a specif wall box fitted or are you using a conventional socket to charge?
+Duncan Craig I've only charged it once and used a standard socket. I also plugged it in at the service station for a bit but it was slow. The precondition worked without being plugged in. I got in the car 10mins before my departure time that I set but it was deffo working. The little fan symbol flashes in the climate area and the air is passed up by the front and rear windows. I think my expectations were a bit high, I wanted to choose my own temp. I set it from the APP but you can also press the diamond button to precondition the cabin. I think If you have it plugged in you can precondition the battery too for extended distance.
+Adam Palethorpe Thanks for the useful info Adam. I've noticed something interesting, I've ordered heated seats (and steering wheel) as part of the interior comfort package as I wanted the folding rear seats, yet yours looks like it came with folding seats as standard? - is that correct? If that is the case I've been charged for something that is already on the car!
+Duncan Craig no no no, I ordered folding seats as an extra. I read online somewhere that they came with folding seats so that's why I mentioned it in the vid. I deffo paid extra for them. Will come in very useful. There's actually enough room for me to slide my road bike in there i'm sure of it. Mind you I still brought thule roof bars and a cycle carrier because i'll need all that room just to put the GFs luggage in when we go away...
Simon Sinclair hi Simon. Yes in my experience the battery was worse in winter. It still did a good job for me. I’d also use 20% by preheating my car of a morning - which is a brill feature! I didn’t charge mine every night at home though, more at work when i arrived so if you charge at home you can preheat it and not use up the internal battery. I honestly can’t remember how far I could go in winter vs summer but I do remember it was a pretty significant difference.
Yeah that does seem a low price! Strange. I think (in the UK at least) there was a government grant saving on electric vehicles when they came out, a lot of leasing companies loved it because they got that saving, lease owners paid off the depreciation over the two years and I guess that allowed for a cheaper second hand resale. I imagine they are mostly low mileage too. I switched mine out after 2 years and I’d only done 14k or less - the nature of the car attracts people who live close to work
+Ann Ballard yeah OK, I'll give that a shot. Give me a day or two and I'll try and get that up. Hit subscribe and it should let you know when I upload it. I use the app daily and find it really useful. They've actually released an updated version of it recently too.
Thanks Adam, sounds great! I have heard people say online that the power is reduced when the battery runs down? I wouldn't imagine that to be the case.
+Chris Harris I don't think so. I ran it down to 4% and it still had it all in the bank! I heard that it actually stores 20% hidden to itself to use so you never actually deplete it. That would make More sense
Hi Adam. Good video. Now you've had this a while, any updates on real world mpg and how you've noticed driving style affects it? most of my journeys are short.. but I do have a couple of long distance drives a month around 400 miles each ( motorways around 70-80mph).. Just wondered if they'd cancel out all the savings I made on the shorter journeys trying to use EV only...
+Richard Brown The 330e is the most varied MPG car i've ever driven. So that's actually a hard question to answer. I work 7 miles from home (pretty hill area too), and very rarely charge the car to 100%. Probably once or twice a week max. But here are my experiences so far: If I charge the car to 100% at work and drive home in Auto EV I get something like 280mpg and have 70% battery remaining and it tells me I drove 83% of the distance on electric. That's my most common journey. So I can talk about experiences on that journey.... In Save mode I can get the mpg down (with driving modestly) to 28mpg. If I drive without trying to be reserved it's around 23MPG but you have to remember it's also charging the battery so I end up with about 15% more battery charged just over that 7miles. With very low battery say 8% or so, the engine comes on for most of the journey and then drops into EV mode when it can/should and it still manages much bettery economy than the 520d I had before it. In this mode it doesn't seem to get below 40mpg and can be as much as 70mpg. Eco pro mode works well at improving the MPG when you're mostly using petrol (as you'd imagine). If you're in EV mode turning the heater off seems to make some difference and I also turn the screen off if I don't need it, I do that anyway quite a bit. I did a 45 or so round trip and got 160mpg on the way there using the sat nav on some fast A roads - but this depleted the battery for my arrival (it works out how to most efficiently use your vehicle for that specific journey) which was great but I only had 4% battery once I arrived. On the way back I let it do it's own thing and even did 5 miles of motorway and that journey still managed to be 55mpg and I arrived back with something like 12% battery. Save mode destroys your economy, and although building up your battery % is quite fun, it seems to be a false economy. What I noticed recently is that in any mode when you switch to eco pro the resistance / engine braking lowers which means 'rolling' further but less regeneration. On the plus side you get better MPG in save mode doing this. Without the sat nav set for your destination I don't think the car does the clever bits like scanning the route ahead. EG approaching a big hill with Sat Nav on it will sometimes kick the engine in to reserve the battery as the engine is more efficient at it. Without a destination in the nav it doesn't do this, however I find a very sharp blip on the accelerator kicks the engine in (without putting kickdown mode on) so I do that myself sometimes if I know the hill is going to use up silly amounts of battery. Driving in sports mode is really fun, but, it does make your MPG go down to the 20s. It also eats up your battery very quickly with all the harsh accelerating. I'm impressed with the MPG. The car somehow makes you drive really calm and smoothly anyway, which means it's hard not to get at least 30-40MPG in most situations. I've not done any large distances yet, I would be interested to hear peoples experiences in that or maybe i'll have to just shoot off somewhere myself. I am a bit worried about the fuel take size and total range. It never seems to be right in my car. I have half a tank of fuel left and it says my total range is 80miles. I'm just ignoring that and going by the fuel gauge and monitoring my miles since last filling up. It's obviously difficult for the car to calculate becauese the battery % is always changing but when I have a full tank it tells me my total is 240miles. I know it only has a 40litre tank but that just doesn't make sense. The marketing info for the car and the BMW website says total of 370miles.
Hey Adam. Would you please share your experience after quite some time driving 330e? It's still quite new item in the market and there's not too much information about it. Would be really nice to hear from you. Cheers
Hey Adam - great review thanks - some great info in the comments below too :) Does anyone know if the car lights up blue when you unlock it - like the i8? I'm sure I saw a pic of it somewhere but it could have been an M3 and not the 330e I'm picking mine up tomorrow - m sport in white - can't wait!
Hi Adam, have you got adaptive suspensions? If not how is ride comfort on m sport suspension? I like the m package styling but I’m afraid that the ride will be to harsh over the standard se models. Thank you for the review, very useful.
A note on charging and some info requests I guess.... I plugged it in at home and it took around 3 hours or so but my battery wasn't depleted and I had it set to 'Low consumption' or whatever it's called in the charging settings. I also then went to a service station to test it and the charge settings remained the same but I was hoping for a FAST charge. It just did a standard charge. I'm going to go again and change the settings in the car to take maximum amps from the charge source but i'm pretty certain the connector type we have to use (with the flat section on it) does not support fast charging and if you want that you have to buy another cable or some sort of adapter cable? Does anyone know any more about this? The fast version of our cable looks to have two additional pins at the bottom of the plug but there's nowhere to plug those in on the 330e so it won't fit. This is why i'm assuming there is some sort of adapter to fit those? OR is it just a case if you install the BMW wallbox you use the same supplied cable and it just charges faster via tech magic.
Hi Adam, yes the 330e supports 2 Tues of charging, Mode 2 charging is through a standard 3 pin plug and is said to take about 3 and a half hours for a full charge. Mode 3 charging is with a different cable and would require that you have a wall box fitted at your house, it's said to give a full charge in about 2 hours so not that much different. I've went with Mode 2 at home and work cause it's soo much cheaper for the charging points. check out www.rolecserv.com/
+Chris Harris that's brill info cheers buddy. I'm gutted it doesn't make use of the rapid chargers at public spots :( i charged mine up from a current outdoor power outlet I already have in place for home. Although I would prefer that to be at work so might look into that pod. How much did it cost to have installed after purchase? I just drove 6 miles in save mode and harnessed 20% - keeps impressing me that!
+Adam Palethorpe yes, unfortunately just the 2 form's of charging which aren't greatly different from each other. I don't think it even comes with the Mode 3 cable as standard? sure it was a 400 quid option. the cost of getting a Mode 2 charging point installed should be minimal, it's effectively just an outside socket with RCD protection so no special cabling required, just the closest connection to your existing house or office wiring. I did mine myself connecting it in to my garage socket. it's worth noting that the Rolec Mode 3 unit is the same enclosure ad the Mode 2 so it can be upgraded from 2 to 3 easily in the future. I think the Mode 3 was around £300 to buy. not worth the extra for me as I'm always parked for longer than 2 hours anyway.
+Chris Harris I totally agree. I have an outside socket at home so just a case of getting one put in at work. Took not of the battery today after I arrived home as I want to see how much it loses over night lol
Hi Adam, hope you are enjoying your bmw 330e. I am little puzzled about the type 2 charge cable? Do you use an 16 amp or 32 amp type 2 charge cable. Many thanks
Hi Adam, great video! Can you please tell me if you were to drive in save mode for a long period, does the car recharge the battery back to 100%? I read somewhere it only charges to 50% whilst driving...
I have not had a BMW before (coming from Audi). Does the Sat Nav give you turn by turn signals on the dash as well as the large screen. Sorry for what you may think is a daft question, just one that is useful to know for me . Great video by the way.
+Alistair Inglis the nav is really good. And you have a couple of different options from what I can see. It obviously gives you the voice guidance, which is very accurate and you've got the normal sat nav style screen in the middle of the dash. Then you have 'arrow view' or something like that which appears in your instrument cluster and gives you lane info, island junctions, distance / countdown and arrows directing you (the turn by turn you ask about I think). You can also have this simple arrow view instead of the main sat nav, and if you have the extended screen you can split it and have both those screens next to each other on the main nav screen. You also get traffic flow, traffic issues and other it's on the map. I would say the only thing that lets it down is the 'interactive' map option. It is a by naff ands fiddly to move around the map in a panning motion. Like to see what's further ahead and how the traffic is etc. Feels slow and clumsy but I guess I'm used to just zooming and panning around on my phone.
Does anyone have info on how waterproof or durable the provided charger is? My socket is nice and safe on the side of the house but I have concerns about the charging unit itself. Only used it in the dry at the moment.
+Adam Palethorpe It's fine they are IP rated and perfectly safe in the wet. Still waiting for my delivery date but might end up with one of our local dealers demo models for a while. BTW do you have solar panels? i'll be using my Smappee and charging with that might be worth looking into, in the summer at least.
+Darren Finlay-Smith brill thanks for that. Nope no solar panels, love the idea though. Never heard of Smappee either. Would be really nice to use solar energy to charge the car!
+Adam Palethorpe A smappee monitors your solar output and only turns the plug on at a amount you choose so i'll set mine at 2.5KW that way i should get enough hours in the summer over a hour or so each morning and night to drive for free. I only have a small communte. If you have that car look at panels loads of poeple still doing them free. I got mine from www.365solar.co.uk/ not even 1p some companies charge an admin fee they do it truly for free. Just wish mine was here already!!!
+Chris Harris I'll try and get something sorted to show some driving. I'm sure I shouldn't be flooring it too much with just 100odd miles on the clock though right? Lol. I've used the manual paddles which are a lot of fun, mixed with the regenerative braking it feels very F1. The power is strong, it feels fast but very smooth. I have a stage 2 mk2 focus ST (the 2.5 turbo) with some handling upgrades and I would say the 330e handles better. In terms of power delivery the 330e feels faster from the line and has a very very nice pickup because of the electric torque being instant. The delivery of power doesn't 'shove' you in your seat quite as much but it can do if you use your manual gear changes which is essentially what I'm doing in the ST (holding it in a low gear before accelerating). I haven't tried it at accelerating from faster speeds. Sports mode and sports plus mode make a noticeable difference, more so than they do in the 520d I had before. It feels nice to drive, it manages to feel special but it's also effortless as the petrol and electric work so well together
Great video! Will take note on the fuel cap green wire incase I can't open mine. Can't wait to get my 330e. I'm wondering, with all those frequent charging, how long the battery will last and how much will it cost to change the battery pack? You got any idea?
I just used the 12v socket under the passenger glove box, it's out the way and my adapter is nice and small. Cables run behind the carpet. Didn't touch the fuses. I did on my previous car though but only because that had a constant 12v live. Didn't seem worth it on this one
+7h M1n yeah I should think so, I didn't order it as extra and after my google research everyone seemed to have it. Right hand side of passenger footwell, right in the top corner.
I wonder why your model has problems with a pressurising fuel tank. I have a 2016 330ii msport petrol. I don't think I have that button and have not had any problems opening the fuel flap. I have done 7000 miles so would have noticed it by now
+Chris Harris I genuinely did make a very short 8 minute driving video with my gopro. Felt like Jeremy Clarkson... got back to review it to only find that I had it on photo mode. So I took two photos and wasted my time... however I am going to do one (and some night driving too). I'm pretty sure there is actually a new first person view driving video by someone on youtube now too.
Great video! I have been waiting months for someone to receive their car and make a video, mine isn't due until May. Could I ask which BMW blue that is?
+Ben Johns it's Estoril blue. In love with the colour. I believe it's only available on MSport but could be wrong. Thanks, I was in the Sam position as you waiting for some info! Looking to do another video soon at night and driving too
Hello Adam, thanks for posting this video - very informative indeed. Can I just ask what is the interior trim on the dash.? It looks like the brushed aluminum/black high gloss? Cheers
Hey. Thanks. There's a lot more info around now since making this video which is good. It is indeed the brushed aluminium and gloss black. It looks really smart. Would recommend it.
+Adam Palethorpe thanks for the speedy response Adam... Yes it does look smart indeed! Order now placed,☺ shame that I have to wait 7 - 8 months for delivery! 😴
Great Vid mate everything i needed to know before i go see one. In the uk its a 5% tax BIK for the first year. Do you know if it goes up much in year two?
Yolo Yolo I opted for a 420d not sure if I could live with filling up the tank and recharging the car haha. Best of luck, the 330 is fast (just quiet).
Hi Adam, I see this video is over a year old now. How you getting on with it? I'm considering one of these for a company car doing 120 miles a day with it being fully charged in the morning. What mpg would I expect to see on that journey if it was mainly fast duel carriageways? Cheers mate
lewis burgess hey Lewis. Well I don't do too many large journeys however I recently went down to Newquay and back with a full charge on setting off. That's 190 miles for me. There and back including around 30 miles driving around down there I averaged 46mpg. On the way back it was 6.5 hours (2 hours delays) as I was in stop start. On the way down I was driving with a bit of 'spirit' so I would say that's a good test. It was mostly motorway. With city driving and start stop and deceleration a lot the battery recharges well to be honest which really helps economy. On the motorway without that the recharge is less obv. I hope that helps? You'll get above 40 in my experience at the very least. Drive well and prob 45-48?. I drive small journeys (less than 40 miles) mostly with most days actually being 20-25 miles a day. I measured my Newquay journey as it was last week!
Also like to say I love the car still. The App is awesome and car itself is just brill. Love driving around silently and love the torque. Such a lovely car.
Adam Palethorpe thanks for taking the time to reply mate, I appreciate it. My life lately has been calculating whether I'd be at a loss and comparing other cars. I'm also considering the Lexus is300h which is more expensive a month but I can claim more back in mileage and make a few quid, but it's not as sporty in my opinion. I'd really love a Merc cla shooting break amg but it's a fortune being a diesel but that may benefit my kind of mileage? Anyway... how much does it set you back for a charge, are your utility bills a fortune now? I considering upgrading to 19's but that will also worsen the mpg... the decisions!!
lewis burgess can't comment on the Lexus but I also looked at the shooting break. Quite liked it but it didn't drive like a sports car in the car the 330e does, nowhere near. Looked cool but the rear was actually quite weird to use (getting bikes in the back) - not like a proper estate. Would still consider one though if they were a good price but I'd want the 220. The 200 felt flat to me. By then the torque of the 330e is deceptive. I also have a 280bhp Mk2 Focus ST and the 330e still feels fun to drive. If I did loads of miles I would probably look at a high powered diesel. I'd quite like a 330d or 335d X drive... i also love the GT. I miss the hatchback, the 330e boot is pretty shallow.
Adam Palethorpe the 220 is about £40 more a month compared to the 220 or our company car scheme so the pathetic 137bhp engine would need to be the one I'd I went for the merc. The only things that put me off this is the fact you need to plug in at every opportunity (at a cost) and the 41 litre tank. With a diesel you have none of that faffing. I think the merc is a pain for storage but can't be worse than this... can it?
Deliberating over this and the outlander phev as a company car. I know they're totally different types of car but I have to have it for 4 years so want to make sure I make the right choice. The outlander is both cheaper and better spec'd in terms of standard tech, anyone driven both?
andrewcolbridge I may not be much help, but I have driven a 330e (getting one this month) but not the outlander. The outlander is definatley the more pratical car and will be able to deliver more battery range, whereas the 330e will be faster and more dynamic. PHEV's are highly subjective, depending on what sort of driving you do. If you need the praticality and a bit more battery range to most of your driving the outlander will most likely be your best option. Typically the 330e will do 12-18 miles on the batteries, so if most your driving can be done within that distance, then you could go with the BMW. I hope this somewhat helps. I pick up mine on the 20th so feel free to message me and I'll try to help you with an answer :)
Good video Adam. Just a question... on a full tank of petrol, what's the range you ever had out of it and length of time before you had to refuel again? I'm thinking typical daily use when you will charge as normal etc.
+Vinh Thai long enough for me to forget when I filled up previously. I've never really thought about it but it's going to be at least a month. Could go longer than that if I charged it every day as my commute is only 6.5 miles each way and I don't really do long drives at weekends, I cycle and walk the dogs lol. I very rarely visit petrol stations now unless I'm doing longer distances or trips
Adam Palethorpe. This is the picture I'm trying to get out. So technically (not sure if you have experienced it yet), you could have a full tank of fuel and because you recharge daily and often cycle to work, you may not fill up again until you're traveling long distance on motorway right? Was thinking you may have gone 2-3 months plus without filling up again.
+Vinh Thai yeah I could go 2-3 months without filling up if I charged it each day or evening. Sometimes the engine kicks in on its own when I get a bit speedy or aggressive but you could definitely make it last for that time. There's a special feature on the fuel tank for this. Before refuelling you have to press a button to release pressure build up in the tank which can be caused by the fuel not being used for long periods. I showed it in the video. This morning the car actually forced me to use the petrol engine for the first mile or so because it was so cold. I think that's why anyway. I got s message about it but it didn't explain why. It has also been raining really heavy but I doubt it knew that. Clever car if so! It basically said electric range will be available once normal conditions are met. Odd. Worked fine though
+David Griffiths I've only done 140 miles in it so far (shameful) but I haven't charged it up at all yet and I've been using the save function a lot to run the engine in a bit so I haven't actually depleted the battery using auto. I have driven to work on auto mode and averaged 99.9mpg the first day (12 mile total) and the second day I averaged 75 because half of the commute I switched to save. I'll report back when I've done a few more miles but so far I'd say 30-35mpg is possible on just petrol alone (mix of driving with no motorway). Sorry don't have better stats yet but I've been 'playing' a lot. I can say I'm impressed with the regenerative breaking. On a 6.5 mile commute if I put 'save' on it regenerates around 15% battery which is brilliant really. I'll do some more tests :)
Sounds really promising so far. Would be good to hear how you get on over the next few weeks once you get used to it. My commute is about 8 miles each way so I'm thinking about an i3, but I love how the 330e is the best of all worlds. 99mpg is fantastic!
There's no actual function to do that but basically if you put it into sports mode that kinda does it. Uses very little EV mode. Only when stopped for long periods of long descents basically. As far as I know anyway. If you drive normally in sports mode it doesn't really effect mpg either
thanks mate. Im getting a company car soon and don't know where to find charging spots and i like in a multi storey flat so charging would be a problem. can i charge it while running on petrol on the go?
+Abhinav Srivastava oh man that won't be a problem at all. I drove mine without charging at all for weeks because I had no charge point. Didn't have to change any settings. It's clever, you'll build up more charge than you think by just braking and 'engine' braking. Then it will kick that in at the best times for economy and then switch back to petrol seamlessly. I was still managing to average 65mpg only using the petrol engine and the charge that the car generated for itself (without save mode on so no mpg loss). I thought in your previous question you meant if you didn't want to use up your battery charge. Some people say use save but this kills mpg. You can 'save' your battery by using sports mode, that's what I meant. You'll have no problems just driving around like a normal car. Realistic mpg will be 40-70mpg. This last two weeks I did a 120 mile journey 6 times which was motorway and only charge it twice during that time so the battery depleted 20miles in to two of those.
+Adam Palethorpe my average mpg on the first journey was 68 but I took it steady. Then it was 50, 40 and 46mpg. Must add that I also had a fully loaded car and a bike rack and bike on the roof lol. 68mpg was 120miles at an average of 65mph. It's a really nice car. Also nice and quick! When going from those 50mph to 70mph zones it puts a smile on your face
+Dean Niland I'm getting about 34mpg in petrol alone but it seems to charge the battery really fast, I reckon in Eco pro mode it would put less resistance through and charge / regenerate less and therefore do better mpg. I don't drive very Eco though, I've also used sport mode a fair amount. The engine actually sounds a lot better than I expected and it really is a fun car. Even in petrol mode the electric motors give it a huge shove low down. I haven't had it on the motorway yet but expect it would probably do pretty well on there. As a comparison before this I had a 520d and I averaged 35-38mpg on the same commute and I used to drive that a lot more 'eco friendly'
Thank you Adam for your video, it helped me endure the longing for my own 330e... :-) But now when I have it, I'm disappointed with the throttle response from the electric engine (I guess anyway, it might be the petrol). Don't get me wrong, I like almost every other thing about the car, except the throttle "lag". Is there actually anyone that have manager to drift with the 330e? When I'm letting of gas after trying to drift on a wet slippery surface, the electric engine doesn't cut of straight away so instead of feeling (childishly) good, I spin around in total embarrassment... Have anyone succeeded on snow or ice? Or perhaps on a dry race track? I saw Chris Harris review the i8 (on youtube) and he said something similar about that car, perhaps it's the ZF software? Anybody know? The store in Sweden didn't know anything about a newer software and their demo car was as "slow" as mine. I hope that I'm not alone and that we can make BMW understand that at least in Sport+ mode, the engine should stop pushing when the driver stops pushing.
+Linus Hellsing it sounds like you've been trying to play a bit more than me lol. I've not tried that, probably never will. I understand the 'problem' though lol. Have you tried doing it in sport + with SAVE on? Does that make a difference?
+Adam Palethorpe Thank you for the suggestion! Yes, I might have tested it a bit more... I got a rare opportunity on a slippery surface and had to take it! :-) I tested using Sport+ ( =traction control halfway off) and the gearbox in "S" ( =petrol engine always on). I did also test it without any driving aids and that was even worse... I guess that it might be easier on snow but I'll have to wait many months for that to happen. When I get to play again, I'll try your suggestion. Who knows, right?
Thanks for the thorough review Adam. I currently have the Golf GTE and unfortunately it doesn't provide anywhere near the MPG expected, therefore I've ordered the 330e, which should arrive mid June.... I'm concerned this will also prove to produce fault MPG statistics, can you tell me what you're getting?
+Adam Quick it's so difficult to answer MPG questions. On my daily commute of 15 miles (total) with 10% charge or so (no not using all EV power, mostly petrol) I average 40-50 mpg but my area is very hilly. If I charge it I can do that journey one one charge and still have some left for the next day (it doesn't do the whole journey in EV, letting the car decide) and then I can get 90-160mpg depending on how much it switches power source. If I do keep it in EV more or don't plant my foot it gets about 260mpg. If you put 'save' on and do the journey, I get about 24-28mpg. It all depends on the modes and terrain etc. I'm really happy with it as I know I can get ridiculous MPG if I want too and also have a fast and fun car that returns 30+mpg even driven hard.
+Kavish Tanna yeah a wall plug is pretty crucial to be honest. It does charge very well from pedal braking and engine braking but it uses that charge up really quickly too so you never really see it built up. I don't think you'd be happy with just the regenerative battery charging on its own. The car does well mpg wise still but you're really missing out.
+Philip Jewer Bet you're well excited about picking it up :) Enjoy it!
Great video for anyone awaiting 330e! Thanks for uploading. You've saved loads of us from a very frustrating first visit to the petrol station
+Matt J haha I saved myself it too! ALWAYS PRESS THE BUTTON lol
Thanks for the video! I have one ordered due to come at the start of June. The lack of information about the car has been driving me mad!
Amazing content buddy keep it up been looking for a video of detailed tour of the car u did it 100 percent
Many Thanks
+Kevin Duncan I will give it a 100% charge this week and get back to you. I haven't given it a 100% charge yet. Feel free to give me a nudge!
A like for petrol cap info, tested this car today and loved it. Dealer never told me about that 🤔. Best colour combo too
Thanks for the video.
+Mike Formby it happened to me (the first time I filled it up!). Thank God for Adam's video!
Excellent - brilliant video! Congrats for being the one of the first people on the planet to get your 330e! :-)
Adam,
About charging rates, standard cable (the one that comes with the normal UK or EU), charges up to 10amps.
Thinking of part exing my 320d for one in September :) Thank you
Great video, thanks. I'll get mine in a few weeks. Another video when driving it would be much appreciated. Cheers
hi Adam - great video. quick question on public charging; did you need to buy a separate charging cable to use on public, type 2 charging points or can you use the cable supplied with the car (and apologies if you already answered this and I missed it.....!)?
Ooh first I've seen of these. Nice one thank you ! 👍
Impatiently waiting for mine July.... A video driving would be great so we can appreciate the performance.
Lovely car but one hell of a wait for it. I have a Tanzanite M sport 330e since June and still have to wait until January.
Very through video. If I were to spec my own 330e it would be similar to this configuration. The M-sport package & the blue paint looks beautiful on this car. On the other hand, that is one finicky fuel cap release...
when will you post the new video with driving and stuff?
Which would you recommend the BMW 330e Msport 2017 plate, exactly like this car or the BMW 520d Standard trim 2018 plate
Hi, im looking at 67 plate, is there anything I should look out for? And any information from your ownership would be really appreciated, thank you.
Great Vid. I do wonder how these plugin cars fair when you do a lot of long commutes. The BIK saving is really appealing, is a sweet looking car too!
What is the real mpg mix "highest and lowest mpg"and haw many miles do you cover with a full tank and 1 full charge?thank you guys!
Just read the manual. It is integrated to the nav.
And pull the green blob, not the cable.
Hi think of getting one second hand, but heard the battery is worse in cold weather?
Simon Sinclair hi Simon. Yes in my experience the battery was worse in winter. It still did a good job for me. I’d also use 20% by preheating my car of a morning - which is a brill feature! I didn’t charge mine every night at home though, more at work when i arrived so if you charge at home you can preheat it and not use up the internal battery.
I honestly can’t remember how far I could go in winter vs summer but I do remember it was a pretty significant difference.
@@palethorpe1986
Hi thanks for the info second hand price seem to be quite low with a 2016/17 330e M sport for around £20k
I switched mine out after 2 years and I’d only done 14k or less - the nature of the car attracts people who live close to work
@@palethorpe1986
Hi in your opinion would it be best to lease that buy second hand cars ?
Could u do a video on the phone app and what remote features are available.
That would make More sense
why do you blank out front Regi plate , but then filly show back......lol....
Does it couple the electric motor with the engine for extra Bhp when launching?
Hi Adam.
But here are my experiences so far:
If I charge the car to 100% at work and drive home in Auto EV I get something like 280mpg and have 70% battery remaining and it tells me I drove 83% of the distance on electric.
Cheers
Hi! I am planning on doing another video in the next couple of week about my experience with this car of the last 2 years. Keep an eye out for that!
Great vid thanks, picked mine up today, dealer said there is a 12 month wait now..
Damn 12 months.. Just placed mine in order today..never got told it would take that long..
Hey Adam - great review thanks - some great info in the comments below too :)
Does anyone know if the car lights up blue when you unlock it - like the i8?
I'm sure I saw a pic of it somewhere but it could have been an M3 and not the 330e
I'm picking mine up tomorrow - m sport in white - can't wait!
Sure does! Looks great too :) thanks.
Sorry, thought I'd replied to this earlier. It does light up blue when unlocked- but I'm sure you've found that out now lol.
thanks Adam,
I noticed if you set the lighting to Classic (Orange) the blue light doesn't come on
Not really had chance to drive at night yet though!!
Interesting video - amazing amount of "junk" (your words!) in it for a car with only 88 miles on the clock!
Lol I know. I put my other car into storage so it all came straight out of that car and into this one. The shame.
+Chris Harris I got my Mode 2 charging boxes from Rolec for £80 each, model EVWP0020
I read somewhere it only charges to 50% whilst driving...
hey man what grade fuel is recommended? and what is the octane rating of the fuel? thanks
+Adam Palethorpe Many thanks Adam:) Looking forward to my ordering and receiving this and the benefit it will bring with the tax!
Very impressed. I'd very much prefer this over Tesla.
but its a lie the fact the manufacture claims the cars does 160mpg! it only does 40mpg
Just wish mine was here already!!!
excellent video, thanks... keen to see one driving and your thoughts on the power??
Hi, Adam. Did you install a dash cam from fuse box by yourself? which fuse number did you use??
I just used the 12v socket under the passenger glove box, it's out the way and my adapter is nice and small. Cables run behind the carpet. Didn't touch the fuses. I did on my previous car though but only because that had a constant 12v live. Didn't seem worth it on this one
Thanks for replying. Could I know that 12v socket under the passenger glove box is standard option??
+7h M1n yeah I should think so, I didn't order it as extra and after my google research everyone seemed to have it. Right hand side of passenger footwell, right in the top corner.
+Adam Palethorpe Let me ask my dealer to check it! Thanks for your help!
I wonder why your model has problems with a pressurising fuel tank. I have a 2016 330ii msport petrol. I don't think I have that button and have not had any problems opening the fuel flap. I have done 7000 miles so would have noticed it by now
Only the 330e has it.
patiently waiting on that promised driving video Adam :)
Ha ha, that's a shame Adam! Thanks for trying though :)
+widiauk
BIK Rates
2015-16 5%
2016-17 7%
2017-18 9%
2018-19 13%
2019-20 16%
+Rob Slade Still much better than the 26% due next year for an A6 Cheers buddy
Hi, I’m about to buy a 330e, just wondering how did you find living with it for 2 years? Would be great to hear your feedback, thanks.
I just got mine nice car but I am looking for people who have it to want to hear how it is lol
Yolo Yolo I opted for a 420d not sure if I could live with filling up the tank and recharging the car haha. Best of luck, the 330 is fast (just quiet).
Shakur Ali 420 nice enjoy it 👌
Hi Adam, I see this video is over a year old now.
The outlander is both cheaper and better spec'd in terms of standard tech, anyone driven both?
andrewcolbridge
I may not be much help, but I have driven a 330e (getting one this month) but not the outlander.
Adam Palethorpe, great piece of technology and definitely would recoup any monies from not having to refuel that often.
Great video, really like the car. Can you let us know what mpg you get in auto edrive mode pls?
Hello mate! great video. can you drive this car just on petrol without charging at all. just like a normal petrol car i mean.
There's no actual function to do that but basically if you put it into sports mode that kinda does it. Uses very little EV mode. Only when stopped for long periods of long descents basically. As far as I know anyway. If you drive normally in sports mode it doesn't really effect mpg either
+Adam Palethorpe *affect
thanks mate.
Great video
+Varia Gaming thanks. Hope it helps. There's not too much info out there yet!
+Adam Palethorpe yea it's good to see a real video don't get mine till June due to delays
Great video Adam, what sort of MPG are you getting when using petrol alone. Due to get mine in July 👍
+Dean Niland although I must also add that I did manage 26mpg average on a 7 mile commute in sport mode...
Thank you Adam for your video, it helped me endure the longing for my own 330e... :-)
But now when I have it, I'm disappointed with the throttle response from the electric engine (I guess anyway, it might be the petrol).
I tested using Sport+ ( =traction control halfway off) and the gearbox in "S" ( =petrol engine always on).
Adam - is that Estoril Blue Metallic?
+Ben Cousins it is indeed :)
Thanks!
+Adam Palethorpe thanks! Lovely color.
What was the point of trying to hide ur registration plate??? When as soon as u took the camera to the back of the car it was fully visible? Lol
Haha I know! I tried to use the app to do it and then gave up
Thanks bro
Hi, do you need to charge it via a wall plug or do you have sufficient charge from braking? Thanks!
+Kavish Tanna yeah a wall plug is pretty crucial to be honest. It does charge very well from pedal braking and engine braking but it uses that charge up really quickly too so you never really see it built up. I don't think you'd be happy with just the regenerative battery charging on its own. The car does well mpg wise still but you're really missing out.
fair enough, many thanks :)
how much u paid for the seat
Love the bmw in that colour not keen on the brown interior colour looks much better if the interior was in black or white in my opinion lol
Nice Video
I think my Dad might pay monthly like maybe £335 every month for a BMW 3 Series M Sport 3.0 2016
Brown leather in a blue car? 🤔
Where's the spare wheel??
devilmix85 lol
that fuel cap is a complete design oversight... i hope kids dont find this out and troll the shit out of 330e drivers lol
Can't hear anything
speak up man!
