- Sugarcane is a tropical plant but that doesn't mean you cannot grow sugarcane in other places. You can grow sugarcane anywhere in zone 8 to 10. Sugarcane is started from cuttings, you can cut sugarcane stalk with an eye and put it in water right side up exposing the top out of water. I have a separate video here • Easiest Way to Grow Su... on Easy Way to Start Sugarcane in Water. Sugarcane likes a lot of moisture so keep the soil moist at all time. I have a video on How Much and How Often to water your plants here • How Much & How Often t...
Sugarcane likes a lot of fertilizer, you can add chicken manure, worm castings, and cow manure to sugarcane. Do not add fresh manure to sugarcane atleast 4 months before harvest and do not fertilizer 2 months before harvest. You can add woodchips around sugarcane to preserve moisture and suppress weeds. Sugarcane can have some diseases as Sugarcane Smut and Mosaic Virus. Some pests such as borers can also affect sugarcane however these are rare cases unless you are growing sugarcane where sugarcane is heavily cultivated. Last, you need lots of patience to grow sugarcane as sugarcane take 10 to 11 months to harvest after you start growing sugarcane. Sugarcane patch will last upto 4 years and will keep coming back. Most sugarcane is replanted after 2 years. enjoy growing sugarcane!

I remember an evening when my mother took us children to a syrup boil. They had harvested the sugar cane, and that night the great fires beneath the boiling pots glowed in the field under the stars. We ate BBQ and chewed cane, and when it was done, there were jars of syrup to take home. I would be hard pressed to find a syrup boil today, and I haven't been able to find cane syrup in the grocery store. It's all corn syrup now. But I'll never forget how the cane tasted or how that syrup smelled on a chilly night in autumn.
I love how he explains everything so easily
Best channel i ever found.

I'm so excited! My husband and I want to put a sugar cane patch on our farm next year, thank you for the free information!!
Love your gardening wisdom!
You brought me back to my home country in Asia. Still one of my favourite drinks even tho I haven't had one in the last 6 years. Thank You Jag!
Come over next year!
A small tip to you. Just use 2 inches of sugarcane in seedling tray and get a seedling. Plant in soil and wait for it to grow about 1.5 feet. Then cut the seedling 6 -8 inches above the ground. This will allow side shoots to grow. You will get atleast 6 sugarcane from one seedling instead of just one.
When one bush grows above 3 feet, tie them together with its leaves. It helps them to stay straight. You can experiment this on just couple of seedling.
Hope you would try this one.
By the way, scrape the skin with a sickle before making juice.
What do u mean 2 inches of sugarcane, just the node?
@@47nodoubt Yeah I want to know too
@@DavidRealMusic I'm trying to get as much as I can from my plot this year so I can have a huge plantation next year
Oh my. How sweet it is.!!! Brilliant adding ginger & lemon. Enjoying sweet memories. Wonderful. And Lily is enjoying her sweet treat. Thanks for the lesson👍💥
Haven’t thought about sugarcane in 50 years. When we were kids we’d stop in east Texas & throughout the south in the summer & get a stalk. Can’t wait for the festival.

I can't wait to move out of Illinois and get into a better growing region!!!! Great video!
You can grow a hardier alternative to sugarcane called 'Miscane.' It's a crossbreed between sugarcane and the grass known as Miscanthus.
I bought 10 seeds 'labelled' as sugarcane earlier this year. Despite warnings that cane will not grow if the temperature falls below 14 degrees Celsius (57 Fahrenheit), my plants have continued to grow from its first year's sowing. Indeed, one of them is over 6ft and has a flower. 3 months from seed to flower, and I keep them in pots. So, I'm thinking I have a 'Miscane' here.
Oh, and I live in Scotland. Yes, 'that' Scotland. The colder, wetter, blustery one across the Atlantic.
I plan to cut my canes down before the first frost and store the rootstocks indoors throughout the winter. Should have enough windowsills.
So if you're still in Illinois and have enough room to keep a few plants indoors away from the cold, I would invest in a few seeds (you do not need many. I had 100% germination from 10 seeds).
@@debbiehenri345 thanks! I'll look into buying some seeds.
So awesome!!
