►► Hey everybody, Jared here to let you know that I'll be appearing at RETROPALOOZA in Arlington, TX on September 16th & 17th!! I'd love for you come say hi and check out all the retro games and nostalgia for sale. I'll be doing panels, autograph sessions and hanging around all weekend!! Get details here -- retropalooza.com
I was lead gameplay programmer and hero moveset designer for Shinobi 3DS! Thanks for mentioning its existence. The lead designer and I took some of the lessons from there and went on to form our own little 2-man studio and made Volgarr the Viking, with ProJared being one of our first major reviewers!
Here's a true fact about Wing Commander, most specifically the movie. The screenings during the first weekend showed the first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode I. When SW fans found out they went to the theatres in droves and paid full ticket price for Wing Commander just to see the trailer. After the trailer ended they promptly left the theatre. Because of that the movie grossed at #1 that weekend even though the majority didn't stay to watch it.
I remember the Final Fantasy Legend series from when I was a kid. I saved my allowance every week, and bought them as I could. I played III religiously, though. I'm gonna have to find those and play them again. I miss those.
I should point out that Ted Woolsey's first localization was not FF Legends/SaGa 3. Instead, that honor belongs to Final Fantasy Mystic Quest, released about a year prior. Despite being made specifically for the west, Mystic Quest was developed in Japan by one of Square's smaller teams, thus requiring a translation.
I’m not correcting you in any way, but technically he doesn’t have to work on games in the order they are released. But you probably know way more about this than I do.
Regarding Dylan's comment about wanting to be told if games on different systems are significantly different to each other, Sparkster and Animaniacs are completely different on the SNES and Mega Drive despite having the same box art so that may be relevant when they come out (oddly, the Game Boy version is basically a cut-down version of the Mega Drive version so that one can be skipped).
@@MrNightshade2010 With the 2 I mentioned I think the issue stemmed from Nintendo having some sort of deal with Konami where ports of SNES games couldn't appear on other consoles, which would explain the different TMNT, Castlevania and Contra games released for the SNES and Mega Drive (I can't remember exactly if that was the case being as it's been ages since I heard it, but it wouldn't explain why Game Boy Animaniacs is how it is).
@@TheWrathAbove Yep. Thinking about it, doing what the Mega Drive version did also seems like it would have taken less space (I think the SNES version would have needed more buttons while the MD version only needed 3 for action, jump and change character).
I didn’t get a computer in my home until I was 18, so my exposure to Wing Commander was on the SNES. To say I became a fan is an understatement. The two SNES games started me on a path to being very active in the online Wing Commander community to this day. I now own every version of every game that has ever been released in the US and play the entire series regularly!
WOW. I’m happy to hear someone played and liked the snes version. I was always confused why origin kept releasing crappy versions of their games on console since I assumed nobody actually played them. They always got pretty ripped in magazines.
As much as I love the nostalgia trip this show offers, the NEW stuff about classic games that I learn about & play is even better. Thank you for every single episode you guys make! I love it, and always look forward to every single one.
The funny thing is, SaGa III arguably wasn't "really" a SaGa game either. It was developed by a totally different team from the first two, with very different gameplay. It didn't even involve the series creator, who was off making the first Romancing SaGa for SNES.
Forget the Wing Commander movie, remember the Wing Commander TV series made by USA Network (yes, the same network that made Monk and Psych) and had a kinda, sorta crossover with the Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, and Savage Dragon cartoons?
Yeah, the animated series was actually pretty decent, and it brought back Hamill, Wilson, and McDowell in the leads. It was a lot more faithful than the (sigh) movie, anyway.
Jared: "Does anyone remember the 1999 live-action 'Wing Commander' movie starring Freddie Prince, Jr., and Matthew Lillard?" Me: "Yeah! The movie is directed by Chris Roberts, who also created the game and made 'Star Citizen' --- Wait, did that game ever come out?" 😆
When I was a kid, that Jurassic Park Genesis T-Rex was the best graphics id ever seen. Also terrifying whenever you encountered it. It was kinda funny to hear it roar "SEGA" on the logo screen though.

Dylan, Jurassic Park for the Game Gear is different than all the other Jurassic Park games EXCEPT for the Master System version. It's a super fun platformer game with some of my favorite video game music to this day! I'm sad it didn't get its moment in the spotlight. Definitely worth revisiting in the next video. You rock Dylan!
The thing I remember most about Wing Commander is part III: Heart of the Tiger, which had Mark Hamill. I was hoping it was his return to acting in scifi, and he'd soon be in a 'Star Wars: Heir to the Empire' movie. Instead, 20 years later we got about 1 minute of him in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and then find out he tried to kill his nephew, then ran away to live as a hermit. Then dies because he heroically force hologramed himself across the galaxy. {sigh} Although there is a new 'Star Wars: Heir to the Empire' movie CGI adaption without Mark Hamill, by DarthAngelus. And a earlier Motion comic version of the story. But sadly, after the Disney-Verse sequel movies, I tossed my Star Wars stuff.
The thing I remember most about the Wing Commander movie was that most of the hype for its release was that the trailer for Star Wars episode 1 would be premiering in front of it 😬
Pardon if it was already said but Joe Hayabusa is Ryu Hayabusa's father from the Ninja Gaiden series. We play as Joe Musashi in Shinobi 3 unless I am mistaken.
The final fantasy legend games were great. Each one had wildly different systems in them to experiment with. Humans level up, monsters eat meat to evolve, and robot primarily gain stats based on what gear they equip. Lots going on to make playthroughs very different.
For a moment, I thought this week's Wing Commander was the one that was released from the Sega CD. Neat, otherwise, and no, I don't remember THAT Wing commander movie, but it makes sense that those two are the stars: Scream and She's All That were $$
Don't forget John Rhys-Davies and Tom Wilson, aka Gimli and Biff Tannen. WC3 also caught some controversy for starring an ex porn star as one of the possible love interests, Ginger Lynn.
Couple of nitpicks/minor errors I picked up on here: you don't recruit monsters/cyborgs in Legend III, your characters transform into/from them; your characters don't increase their stats from using commands in battle, that only happens in Legend and Legend II.
This just unlocked a memory, I remember buying used copies of the Final Fantasy Legend games way back in the day and I saw there were two versions available (Sunsoft & Squenix apparently) and I kept looking at different stores until I found the Squenix versions. My only reasoning was that I didn't like the label on the Sunsoft ones 😄
Yeah, Wing Commander was amazing on PC. And while the SNES version wasn't AS good, it's goddamn amazing that it was actually playable. I still don't know how they pulled that off. The DOS version needed something along the lines of a 386/16mhz to run well, so how'd they get it running on the SNES's dinky 4mhz CPU?
I remember the Wing Commander movie, it was a typical Prinze Jr. love story with Lillard being the quirky sidekick only this time around they’re in space and killing cats instead of hunting monsters or trying to snag girls
Those JP games make me so nostalgic. I played the Game Boy game a lot and have fond memories of it despite not knowing how to advance. I played The Rampage Edition on the Genesis at my cousin's. Good times.
Ahhh Jared, you run a UA-cam channel dedicated to 90's video game releases and pop culture in general. Of course we all remember the Wing Commander movie.
The Jurassic Park game on SNES actually included a LOT of stuff from the book that wasn't in the movie (including the rocket launcher) so I suspect it was mostly developed without access to anything from the movie other than some production stills used for the scanned images of character faces. I liked it WAY better than the one on the Genesis. It was also notable for being an early title to feature surround sound as an option which was nice for the first person sections.
Editor Dylan, would you ever consider perhaps doing deep dives into some of the games being released? Maybe not a let's play but like a video explaining more about a game such as development, release, gameplay, reviews, or if there are different versions of games a look into what's different (if anything). It could be nice supplementary material between the weekly episodes. You could maybe even do the same for consoles. Since we're in 1993 you could keep it at 1993 and back for the time being. Or jump way ahead to 97-99 and when we get to those years later come back to 90-93.
Well, I am sad to say that Jared make a rare big error. In FFL3, you do NOT recruit monsters. You instead have the option to use special items dropped by monsters you battle to transform your characters INTO said monsters. You can also evolve your monster-transformations into stronger versions of that monster type by repeatedly consuming the same item type. You can revert back to human at any time, though.
So, fun little fact about Final Fantasy Legend 3 (and the series in general). Final Fantasy Legend 3 in particular is *different* from the first two games because it has a typical RPG progression system such as what you'd find in the Final Fantasy series... including Mystic Quest. In fact, Final Fantasy Legend 3 shares staff with Mystic Quest! The DS remake changes the system up to make it play closer to other SaGa games. As for the SaGa games in general, the series actually stems from series designer Akitoshi Kawazu who had a hand in designing the original Final Fantasy... and Final Fantasy 2. You can look at Final Fantasy 2 and think of it as SaGa 0. Also, he didn't work on Final Fantasy Legend 3 which is why that game is so different from the rest of the series (until the remake). Out of the three Gameboy SaGa games, the third one is my favorite. I used to emulate it on my computer until the 1998 rerelease and I'd use cheats to fly around on the Talon and just mess around. I did eventually beat the game... like four years ago. It's not a hard game but I guess I kept getting distracted and never completed it until recently. I also love SaGa 2 but it also took me until like 4 years ago to finish and that one *is* a hard game until you use a monster meat guide to get the most powerful monster in the game and then you can trivialize every encounter.
Literally just met Matthew Lillard this past weekend at Fan Expo Toronto... absolute beautiful human being, so hearing him named dropped here was just awesome!!
You do you Dylan, play what you want. XD Man, I used to think of Wing Commander all the time, I loved that movie. Don't remember a lick of it now though.
The Game Gear version of Jurassic Park was an extremely strange but good side scroller that was totally different from either game on the SNES or Genesis.
Oh my God for the first time in my life I felt heard! XD But yea, the Genesis version is so much fun imo. Yes yes, I am a Thomas fan, so the bias is there, but I really have had friends not into Thomas try it and genuinely enjoy it. Thanks for taking the time and checking it out. ^-^
Oh boy, I remember Jurassic Park, both for SNES and Genesis. I'll be honest, as a kid, I never got very far... but I liked the Genesis version better because... you can play as the Raptor. So yeah, I'll have to hunt down for both of those one of these days and hopefully get through both of them, both story lines for the Genesis, and of course the SNES line.
Out of all Castlevania titles, the fact that the pachinko machine one was chosen really cracked me up 😂 thank you, Dylan. Also I knew of the existence of Wing Commander 's movie, but I never watched it... Now I remember why 😅👍🏼 looking forward next week, NIT90s crew!
It's really hard to point at saga and say it's not part of the final fantasy franchise, when the term "final fantasy franchise" really refers to a bunch of unrelated games only connected by the name "final fantasy" especially when occassionally non "final fantasy games" are part of the "final fantasy franchise" or games not called final fantasy get made by the creator of final fantasy who tags on a subtitle "final fantasy side story" but then removes the subtitle on the final installment of the substory. It's all very confusing Like, it' s obvious to people that Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, Wario Land 2 , Wario World are all games that take place in the mario universe, because the mario universe shares a cast of characters, similar mechanics (basically) acrossed all the games and interacts with eachother. It's not the same with Final Fantasy, which has multiple titles under it's belt that are seperate entities that are considered part of final fantasy (Vagrant story being one). I think to further confuse matters, there legitimately were 2 games that had nothing to do with final fantasy "Mystic quest, final fantasy adventure" that also came out around this time. These games literally have nothing to do with final fantasy. Saga and Final Fantasy were both created by the same person. Mana on the other hand was not.. So I think making a general statement like "Saga 3, not a final fantasy game" Simply because it didn't share the moniker of the previous installments "final fantasy gaiden" is not really the whole story.
Hey guys, love the series! You totally got the ninja's name from Shinobi wrong though. It's Joe Musashi, not Joe Hayabusa. Easy mistake to confuse it with Ryu Hayabusa from Ninja Garden series.
A lot of the team that worked on Final Fantasy Mystic Quest worked on Final Fantasy Legend 3 and it shows, from the gameplay, to the music, to the graphics. Fun fact, the Stone spell can wipe out just about every non-boss enemy in the game lol
While it got fixed in a lot of subsequent versions, the Mute spell actually worked on a number of bosses. Considering I never liked doing things an indirect way, I don't even remember why I tried it in the first place but it turned some of the bosses into tame puppies.
@@chriskoschik391 It no longer worked on later release versions, so I'm guessing it was an English version bug, and re-releases it didn't work any more (I remember Dahak spending two thirds of the time trying to cast a spell at me and it not working. Mob AI definitely didn't account for being muted)
I remember that movie, didn't see it in theaters but might have a copy around here. Not sure if you'll get there but the two Wing Commander games on the Playstation feature the amv movies from the DOS game and has top level talent (Mark Hamill as Blair!).
Secret Missions on SNES was my first exposure to Wing Commander, I've loved the franchise ever since. There _are_ different outcomes, however. While (spoiler alert) the Goddard colony is going to get slaughtered by the secret weapon no matter what, completing your missions successfully determines whether or not you play two missions in which the you protect the Tiger's Claw as she retreats, or two missions in which you pursue and destroy the enemy dreadnought that has the weapon. Retreating results in the Kilrathi decimating the Terran Confederation, where they enslave humans to death, while destroying the weapon obviously lets the humans live to fight another day with the Kilrathi emperor executing his admiral for this failure.
Love these videos, they're always a great start to the weekend! I absolutely remember Wing Commander! It was the movie that played after the SW Episode 1 trailer debut.
Is Shinobi III less difficult than Revenge of Shinobi? I never could get very far in Shinobi III but, unlike Revenge of Shinobi, I never played Shinobi III on the Genesis proper back in the day, just in the Genesis collection on the PSP and on the Sega Genesis Mini. It could just be that I was able to get much farther in Revenge of Shinobi because I was a teenager when I first played it in the 1990s while I didn't play Shinobi III until my late 30s or early 40s, by which time my ability to play that sort of game was already diminishing. I didn't know the Sega Game Gear got a World Series Baseball game before the Genesis did in 1994 but apparently the Game Gear game, which was a localization of a Japanese baseball game (unlike the Genesis WSB game, which was completely original), beat the Genesis version by a few months. Sega Retro says it came out in November 1993 but I have no idea if that's accurate. I like the Genesis World Series Baseball game since it was the first baseball game with the full Major League Baseball license, as opposed to the Player's Association license, so I could play as the Montreal Expos instead of just the Montreal Blankshirts, and World Series Baseball on the Genesis had accurate backdrops of all of the Major League Baeball stadiums including Montreal's Olympic Stadium, unlike Sports Talk Baseball which just had three generic stadiums. I only ever played the original Jurassic Park on the Genesis (plus that Sega CD game that was more like edutainment than a proper game but I couldn't figure out what to do in that game so maybe there was more "game" game later on). It's alright but the later Jurassic Park: Rampage Edition on the Genesis is supposed to be much better.
I was 100% a Nintendo kid back then, but even I couldn't deny that Sega had the best version of Jurassic Park. There's just no counter to being able to play as a velociraptor.
Shinobi III also had a re-release on the Sega Genesis Collection on PS2 & PSP and on Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on Xbox360 & PS3. Jurassic Park is now available in a collection on all current platforms that include the NES, SNES, GameBoy and Genesis versions.
I remember the Wing Commander movie and thought the whole “old school” style of the fighters was ridiculous and that was the nicest part of the game. I loved the Mark Hamill games I had Wing Commander IV which was great and I loved the cut scenes. Love these episodes thanks for these
All 8-bit versions of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" are seriously amazing, I've grew up with them: the outstanding creepy soundtrack really shines on NES but also the Game Boy and Master Versions were good.
Brett, you start in the center of the map. You're gonna want to walk to the left to pick up some bolas, then head South through the gate. There are some raptors.
Big Sega, and Shinobi fan here! Shinobi III is hands down my favorite Shinobi game of all time!!!!! I first discovered it on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection game for 360, and I was hooked instantly on it! I love it so much!!!!
It's a well known now that those were actually the Saga games on GB, they also got remade on DS. The first game on the mana series got the same treatment on GB too, and that also got remade on Ps Vita and android and an unique GBA remake which sadly has been forgotten.
I love the FFL games on Gameboy! Those and FFA were a huge part of my childhood! Funny how none of them are actual FF games. Great games nevertheless 🤘
Hehehe well, at least Final Fantasy Adventure is the only one that actually has an excuse for the name. The original Japanese name is Final Fantasy Gaiden: Seiken Densetsu, so it wasn't a name change this time. And it does at least feature the similar elements from FF, like the spell names, reused sprites from FF3 NES, and an actual chocobo later in the game. But that's about it, lol. Sword of Mana is an interesting reimagining of it on GBA . I wouldn't say it replaces the original, since it plays very differently, and the story differs a lot, even though the main beats are the same. A more modern 1:1 remake of it called Adventures of Mana is available on smartphones and PS Vita.

Either way, the game rocks. It has a great setting (as is standard for all three of these games) and the soundtrack is amazing.
This is also true. SaGa 3 is much more akin to a Final Fantasy game than a SaGa game. It suffered from an identity crisis all around.

3:22 I think it's actually Joe musashi. An honest mistake, since was Ninja Gaiden is really popular and was at the time
So, fun little fact about Final Fantasy Legend 3 (and the series in general).
You're telling me Scooby Doo's Fred and Shaggy were in a Wing Commander movie?! 🤯
Literally just met Matthew Lillard this past weekend at Fan Expo Toronto... absolute beautiful human being, so hearing him named dropped here was just awesome!!
That Wing Commander movie commercial unlocked a hidden memory in my brain. I forgot all about that movie and I love Matthew Lillard.
He was great in Hackers and okay in Without A Paddle.
He's also now in the Five Nights at Freddy's movie.
@GabePuratekuta I didn't know he was in Without a Paddle.
@@GabePuratekuta Scream, Hackers, SLC Punk, Thirteen Ghosts.. basically everything he’s ever been in he’s great haha
You do you Dylan, play what you want. XD
Man, I used to think of Wing Commander all the time, I loved that movie. Don't remember a lick of it now though.
I never watched the Wing Commander movie, I was only introduced to it through Spoony’s review of it…
…anyone remember Spoony? Anyone…?
Who could forget him!? His videos were fantastic!
Is that Masi Oka from Heroes in the Shinobi commercial?
The Game Gear version of Jurassic Park was an extremely strange but good side scroller that was totally different from either game on the SNES or Genesis.
Oh my God for the first time in my life I felt heard!
XD
But yea, the Genesis version is so much fun imo.
So yeah, I'll have to hunt down for both of those one of these days and hopefully get through both of them, both story lines for the Genesis, and of course the SNES line.
ooooh, so THAT'S the origin story of how Fred and Shaggy ended up with a talking dog? Nice! O.o
@@brycearmstrong9370 I had no idea! Some of the bosses are pretty tough, so that's good to know!
Typically, Mute NEVER works on bosses in games lol
@@chriskoschik391 It no longer worked on later release versions, so I'm guessing it was an English version bug, and re-releases it didn't work any more (I remember Dahak spending two thirds of the time trying to cast a spell at me and it not working. Mob AI definitely didn't account for being muted)
Whoever has the Patreon name DylanIsTheBestEditorEver, you deserve a beer. Or a sundae. I don't know your preference man.
The gg version of Jurassic Park is a lot of fun and even has a crossbow/operation wolf/T2-esque shooter stage
Awesome Jared! I still love these! The nostalgia factor is max!
Thanks!
It's Joe Musashi in Shinobi 3, not Joe Hayabusa! Why Ninjas are named Joe in the first place...
I guess Bram Stroker's Dracula Master System/Game Gear released later than Nes/Snes/Genesis.
I was 100% a Nintendo kid back then, but even I couldn't deny that Sega had the best version of Jurassic Park. There's just no counter to being able to play as a velociraptor.
these are so great i look forward to fridays again (even working weekends) to watch these ty and dylan for them
Main character of Shinobi's name is Joe Musashi.
Wing Commander: the Game has Biff Tannen and Luke Skywalker. Wing Commander: the Movie has Fred and Shaggy. Nuff said.
So....much......WIN!
Dylan IS the best editor ever!😃
I feel like I learn more from your videos than any history class I took in school.
That's what happens when you care about the subject matter.
I remember the Wing Commander movie and thought the whole “old school” style of the fighters was ridiculous and that was the nicest part of the game. I loved the Mark Hamill games I had Wing Commander IV which was great and I loved the cut scenes. Love these episodes thanks for these
Don't sleep on the game gear version of Jurassic Park. It's legitimately good.
Jared's correct about Jurassic Park for Genesis. It rocks. And you can be raptor.
Dylan calling Dracula the book "loosely based on... Castlevania!" Cracked me up. Great show as always guys.
Mark Hamill used to be in the CD series Wing Commander games.
Yes I remember the Wing Commander film, I even have it on DVD, along with a complete set of the action figures that were made to go with it.
The Dracula book is loosely based on the Carmilla book, btw^^
All 8-bit versions of "Bram Stoker's Dracula" are seriously amazing, I've grew up with them: the outstanding creepy soundtrack really shines on NES but also the Game Boy and Master Versions were good.
Today is also my 25th birthday! (Or in the context of these games, my negative-fifth birthday)
Nice work 👌 I do always enjoy your videos and like to remember the time keep it up and see you next week
Greetings from Spain 🤘🏻
Was that Masi Oka in the Shinobi commercial?
Brett, you start in the center of the map. You're gonna want to walk to the left to pick up some bolas, then head South through the gate. There are some raptors.
Oh yeah! Grateful another week guys!
Big Sega, and Shinobi fan here! Shinobi III is hands down my favorite Shinobi game of all time!!!!! I first discovered it on the Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection game for 360, and I was hooked instantly on it! I love it so much!!!!
I saw the Wing Commander movie in theaters when it came out, and all I remember is the trailer for Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace.
It's a well known now that those were actually the Saga games on GB, they also got remade on DS. The first game on the mana series got the same treatment on GB too, and that also got remade on Ps Vita and android and an unique GBA remake which sadly has been forgotten.
I didn't forget the GBA remake! I played Sword of Mana a bunch as a kid, had a great time!
There was also a wing commander animated series that was a prequel to the first game with season two being a retelling of the first game.
I love the FFL games on Gameboy! Those and FFA were a huge part of my childhood! Funny how none of them are actual FF games. Great games nevertheless 🤘
Eh, to me FFA is an actual FF game. All those Final Fantasy character designs immediately make me think of Final Fantasy.
I got my Genesis used from my cousin and for some reason it was only in black and white for me, so it's weird for me to see Jurassic Park in color.
