I wish someone had told me this when I became a Mom. I spent so much time trying to do it all while working full time. I was always stressed. In retrospect, I wish I had enjoyed those moment more because it goes by so quickly.
I, at age 69, finally have “grown-up” furniture in my house. My beautiful white sectional gets draped with flannel Christmas sheets when my daughter and son in law come with their 2 very large dogs. When they leave, the sheets get washed, folded, put away. I love the fun and chaos we have for a few days. And I love the serenity that follows afterwards. I love your channel!
Being open to adjustments can be so helpful for our mental wellbeing and how we define our success vs failure. My teens used to throw clean clothes in the laundry until they started doing their own laundry. Teaching our kids life skills can help them with independence and save us work. My kids are now young adults living on their own, and they appreciate that they have those life skills.
Yep, I basically gave my friends home ec lessons before they went off to uni (college) as their mums hadn't taught them to cook, clean, sew and maintain things 🤷♀️
Cass - I think that you would be proud of me. I had a donation box and a scheduled pickup the next day, but the box was half-full. I actually walked around the house looking for things that I wasn't using that maybe others could use. I filled the box with things that made me feel good because I knew that it would help someone. I also threw out some older nightgowns and random junk that I was pretty sure no one would want, and in the process, stuff left!
Just a thought as to all your dust when you moved in… we built a house…and saw all the mess building creates. And construction crews do NOT clean after themselves. I had found empty soda bottles in between walls before the sheet rocked them… and oh my gosh the dust in the ac/heat ducts!!!! It was grossly crazy!!! And when we turned on our air conditioner the first time, we were covered in dust! No matter if I vacuumed daily or five times a day, we always had so much dust!! Something triggered me to “clean” the vents. I should have had them professionally cleaned but I didn’t know at the time that cleaning outputs was a thing. I cleaned every single vent in my 3700 sqft house… it wasn’t perfect but at least I didn’t get a white powder on my furniture, floors or upholstery anymore! I know you’ve been a while in your new home and this video is older but at least you know and can share!!
A stick vacuum was a game changer in my house! I use it all the time, so easy to empty and love the attachments for doing the sofa or window tracks. My drag along vacuum has been banished to the garage and is now only used to vacuum the car. Loved this episode 💕
I love you for underlining how you can get neurotic and how its fine to not have everything sparkling at all time. I sure felt myself falling into that rabbit hole but hearing you acknowledge it helps to breathe again! 🫶🏻
You speak the truth! It is liberating to rid oneself of “ treasures” that can bring joy to another. Don’t be stingy. Let another enjoy your spoils. My mother‘s music box, for instance, lit up a little girl’s life. She was enchanted, and my mother would have approved.
I love the grace extended to those of us with young children, the encouragement that this is, realistically, a messy season, and it won't last forever! That lets me breathe easier compared to "50 hacks for a spotless home with toddlers!" 🤪
My job as a grandmother is to not only watch the children but clean, clean clean when I visit my daughter. If I can help in anyway, I will. You young parents have so much on your plate in this crazy world. Recognize your season of life because it is over in a heartbeat.
Teenagers need to learn to do their own laundry! It is one of those life skills they should have. Also cooking a few meals is a good skill to have. Sending kids out into the world without these skills is doing them a disservice. ❤
I totally agree! I dont think it serves Anyone if the mothers in the home do everything. Children need to learn how to take care of their clothes and their meals and the homes. It should be a team effort!
Totally agree! That’s how they learn by watching their parents be an example and doing it themselves when they’re old enough. Both parents should be seen cleaning and cooking IMO.
When our daughter went to college, I was amazed how many in her dorm did not know how to do laundry. Her room mate NEVER did a load of laundry. Ugh... We have to teach our children life skills or they will be stressed out adults. Laundry, cooking, cleaning, just maintenance in general.
Makes me remember my mum cleaning so much when she worked full time and then she would be so busy doing the house and then she would always cook amazing meals and I loved her baking Bur as a kid we got jobs to do too Now I'm my 50s I'm experiencing a lot of over whelming jobs I broke my leg in 2015 and it's never been easy to do the ceilings and walls so I have yo improvise by using mops and step ladder scares me being up high on the top step but as long as I don't fall it is brilliant to accomplish jobs and I always feel good when I have done chores in the home My children are all grown up and moved out so I now have flatmates and the flatmates do some chores to take the pressure of me being overwhelmed thank you for all your tips yo keep up with the chores and decluttering I have done and did since watching your channel
Love this advice! One more thing to ad that works in my house: to keep our sofa clean, the dog is not allowed on the furniture. She has her own bed in our living room, and one in the screened in porch (we're in North Carolina). She knows the rule and doesn't even try to jump on the furniture.
I have a mobile vacuum cleaner (like the Rumba) and it helps with the 3 dog's hair, they live in the house with us! It walks around and vacuums for you. It works for 2hours while I'm getting other things done! The 3 boys take it to their rooms, switch it on and close the door. They love our vacuum too!
SO lovely to see Taryn on here, thank you both! 💗👏🤩 For dusting I just use the upholstery brush on our vacuum 😂 Done in seconds, with no bending down/need for a step ladder
I just put 3 loads of laundry away while listening. Finally I understand why a regular vacuuming schedule will improve my life! As a back story, when my working mom assigned chores in the 1960's girls vacuumed and boys burned the trash. Vacuuming always seemed like a life sentence. Now I live with my retired husband who vacuums "middles" on weekends, a big fluffy white dog, and a ginger short haired cat. I have just added detail vacuuming this week's zone (ala Fly Lady) in my weekly home blessing. With your thoughts about vacuuming reducing dust, I will embrace the self care. Thank you. BTW, any chance you could interview Fly Lady? She is now empty nested, has a mental health (depression) back story, and is such a huge presence in home making coaching. I found her via a print magazine 20 years ago when I was a working mom with 3 children and a still employed husband, one dog, and two cats. It was her "you can do anything for fifteen minutes" that literally led me to be successful at home and at work. Every generation has their voice, Marla Cilly is a wonderful voice for us Boomers. 🎉 BTW, I really appreciate your openess on ADHD and alternative intelligences. Love it!
Great suggestion to assess the kitchen cabinets. So impactful if you can just make space to put things away instead of having to leave them on the countertop
What a fantastic podcast! I find these so helpful and it's great to get insights from new people such as Taryn. I really liked what you said at the end aswell Cas. So much so that I have written it down neatly so I can refer back to it."Take some short cuts Take some pressure off yourself Because you can work full time You can have kids and pets And still have a home that's tidy and clean-ish And that you're proud of" 👏
I grew up in a filthy house. My mom was mentally ill and a hoarder. I was a hoarder too and decided to change. I suffer from depression, obesity, and chronic kidney disease. It is a real struggle but I cleaned up and now am the opposite. I have read every cleaning book around and watched countless videos. I even worked as a hotel maid for a while. I didn't make much money but learned how to clean quickly and make a bed with hospital corners. I now consider myself a cleaning expert because I have tried many products and use the ones that work. I am a person of faith and prayed for help. I never had a team of experts like they do on hoarders I just did it all myself. I am going too far with it now and get really bothered with clutter, filth, and disarray. I want to let everyone know that you can overcome this. It things seem overwhelming just break a room up into quarters and do one quarter a day. That is what helped me. Cleanliness is so important and I am so grateful to both of you for your help. Keep making these videos because they help people have a better life .
You are amazing! I grew up in a dirty house too. I think that's why I want the opposite. I have got better but with 3 kids I need to accept that perfection is not necessary or possible.
I totally relate to the all or nothing mentality. I have been stuck in this mindset forever!! I get into a routine of doing things in chunks but I never stop once the time is up. I get obsessed with the room or task being perfect and keep going until it is. Then it puts me off doing it again for ages as I have the idea that it's going to take longer than is actually necessary. I really struggle to stick to a cleaning routine for that reason. I end up trying to do a tonne of daily tasks. My house isn't terrible. It is much better than it was. I agree with the 'Pretty Principle' ie my house is beautiful so I want to keep it that way. My kids' rooms are a battle I feel like I won't win. My youngest daughter is a butterfly and I am a ladybird so I find her room so stressful. She drops everything on the floor or an open shelf!! 😢 I will try de cluttering with them.
I am a vacuum junkie and have two uprights and two Roombas. My attitude is that these are critical power tools that are used at least three times a week. If my husband wanted a power tool that he could use that often, I would not hesitate to make sure he had it. By the way, my shark upright was not expensive, but it is hands-down better than my Dyson.
I try to be minimalist with my personal possessions, there's no helping the rest of the household! 😂 I am the complete opposite with my garden though, I NEED ALL plants!😂 I NEED the space I see when I wake up to be clean and tidy, and the washing up from the previous day to be done (it doesn't need to be dry and put away, I can do that the next morning, but my counters need to be clean and clear, ready for the next meal to be prepared.)
Love my Dyson. We use qvc to buy because we can pay in installments. We could pay in full, I’m not going into debt for a vacuum, but it takes the sting out a bit. I agree, I have a 2 cabinets of cleaning supplies. I now just keep dawn and h20 in a glass bottle and have one in each bathroom and the kitchen to use.
Used to have tons of cleaning products. Now I've decluttered them (gave away, used up, or tossed)!🎉... White vinegar is the BEST- & adding a bit of Dawn dish soap or baking soda to tough stains is so simple. I still am in awe of vinegar & all its uses: cuts grease, kills mold & keeps it away, cleans glass & mirrors, & the list goes on❤😁
The dust thing reminded me of my grandparents. My grandma always told me that she never dusted because she kept the floors clean. But little did she know that when she was at work, my grandfather would dust the entire house 😂
People think Minimalism means very little stuff, but in principle is keep things you love and use. So technically what you have described is minimalism.
I love all the podcasts and have learned so much in this group. But, I would like to see/hear a few more podcasts where older adults are being interviewed. For instance, guidance for those of us who are married or widowed, have grown children no longer in the home, don't have as many family responsibilities, maybe we are retired or semi-retired, etc. Can we get more of that guidance? Or is it already done, but I just haven't seen it? tia
Minimalism isn't about not having anything. It is about only keeping the things that you love or use regularly so that you can put all your time and energy into the things you enjoy.
I have hadcthe flu and the cleaning has accumulated but I have been doing chores but haven't been keeping up with the bigger jobs like walls and ceilings and skirting boards and doors and frames so I really need to get some motivation to do the jobs that are important I'm going to start making a 100% effort everyday
Are the stick vacuums lighter? I have health issues and my husband does the vacuuming, because if I do it, I am recovering for days. We vacuum once a week to keep the pet hair and dander manageable. We really should dust more often. Saturdays are either rest days or activity days. Sundays are chore days. We tidy, clean, and depending on time of year do gardening. I struggle with cleaning daily because I am SO EXHAUSTED after working and commuting for 12 hours 4 or 5 days a week. Passover is coming. I am looking forward to cleaning out our pantry and kitchen!
If you can, get a robot vacuum cleaner but it must have the tower for the robot to frequently empty the dust into as it will need constant emptying if you don’t. I also have a robot mop and it’s brilliant. It’s the best money you’ll ever spend.
@@Mayfrancisxavier Thank you for the suggestion. I have thought about it. The main reason we haven't is that we have pets that will occasionally leave us gifts when we are not home. I really don't want to have to clean that up. 😆
I switched to a lighter stick vacuum for the same reason. The cordless, battery operated is definitely lighter than a normal corded vac. I have a tineco from Walmart. I love it. All the weight is by the battery pack, but it's not too bad. I can do the whole house without issue.
I'm in no way trying to be rude, because I love you Cass, but I'm a stay at home mom currently homeschooling a disabled child & it takes wayyyy more of my time than when I worked & he was in school. I can't even get ONE thing done at home while my child is home with me (which is every day) 🤷♀️ Luckily I have been able to declutter a TON in thebpast year because of you & a few other channels while my son is asleep at night ❤
That middle sweet spot of not having a picture-perfect house just means that it's lived in and the house is a home. Not a some magazine like house in architecture.
In my experience, robot vacuum usually can't reach the corner of the room as well as stick vacuum. We needed to still vacuum at least twice a month. We can use stick vacuum to clean other things too, like the sofa. Many also has extra extensions like handheld vacuum and wet plus dry vacuum function.
I HATE my Dyson and I’m trying my best to kill it completely….it just spits out stuff after holding onto it a while. I do, however love my Electrolux ergo rapido stick vac
I think I've heard Cas saying about just using Windex before? Obviously that's just for IKEA-like pieces, not real/antique wood though. I have an old tin of proper wood polish for those few antiques we do have.
It would be great to see you do some thing with Kallie Branciforte. She is very knowledgeable, does not push her personal opinions and is quite factual. She has over 1 million subscribers. Maybe you have done something with her already. Please let me know.
If you have family/friends who use those products, giving the ones you no longer want away to them means they don't need to buy more when they run out. If they are nearly empty make the effort to use them up. Advertise full bottles of product which you don't like for whatever reason on free sites - there's usually someone who'll appreciate not having to buy cleaning supplies.
Our Dyson Animal (that's around 25 years old, with a cord) is the best vacuum I've ever used though... Glad I haven't bothered going cordless; thanks for the warning! 😂
@@HannahRainbow88 my kids bought it for me for Christmas and I feel obligated to keep it. It’s honestly one of the worst vacuums I’ve ever owned. So disappointing
I used to like Dyson until I got a second one. It broke while under warranty. They wanted another $400 for the part that doesn't work. It soon became expensive clutter. Anyone want a dyson they can just look at? Lol just kidding I'm gonna throw it away... :)
I loved the content but I noticed one thing - Taryn uses filler words a lot, such as "like", "kind of", "so", "yeah" and Cas doesn't (I watched hundreds of videos). Closer to the end you started using these filler words too, Cas. It felt like you were trying to fit in by mimicking your guest. It just made want to go rewatch my own video and training recordings (for work) and check for the presence of filler words.

What is it with husbands telling us to lower our standards? Why the heck can’t they raise their standards!!!
That middle sweet spot of not having a picture-perfect house just means that it's lived in and the house is a home. Not a some magazine like house in architecture.
Good ideas 💡
I hope you collaborate again!!
This might be a dumb question but why do you have both a robot vacuum and a stick vacuum?
In my experience, robot vacuum usually can't reach the corner of the room as well as stick vacuum. We needed to still vacuum at least twice a month. We can use stick vacuum to clean other things too, like the sofa. Many also has extra extensions like handheld vacuum and wet plus dry vacuum function.
I HATE my Dyson and I’m trying my best to kill it completely….it just spits out stuff after holding onto it a while. I do, however love my Electrolux ergo rapido stick vac
What spray can clean windows and polish furniture?
I think I've heard Cas saying about just using Windex before? Obviously that's just for IKEA-like pieces, not real/antique wood though. I have an old tin of proper wood polish for those few antiques we do have.
My room needs a vacuum

It would be great to see you do some thing with Kallie Branciforte. She is very knowledgeable, does not push her personal opinions and is quite factual. She has over 1 million subscribers. Maybe you have done something with her already. Please let me know.

So how do you declutter cleaning products?
I throw away ones that I’ve never used or don’t like
If you have family/friends who use those products, giving the ones you no longer want away to them means they don't need to buy more when they run out.
If they are nearly empty make the effort to use them up.
Advertise full bottles of product which you don't like for whatever reason on free sites - there's usually someone who'll appreciate not having to buy cleaning supplies.
I love Dyson. Suckers…in a good way.
Staying in my MILs house now, her level of clean is not the same as mine.....DUST DUST...everywhere DUST!
I got a Dyson cordless. Worst money spent EVER!!!!
I love my Dyson, it makes vacuuming fun for me.
I am not allowed to have THINGS.
The female Matt Damon?
Another "oh my god" 😢
Again, antother video I can not watch further😢
