I've discovered your channel a year ago maybe. But I didn't applied what I learned about you. In 2021 I drowned into depression. And it manifested not only in the clutter around the house. It affected my laundry specifically. Since 2021 I never emptied my laundry bin. Before the end of the years , I would promise myself that before new year, I have to and must wash all my clothes, like empty it. It never happened. It came to a point where I can no longer sleep in my room because when I see my dirty clothes I nag myself about how lazy, undisciplined, unstructured I am. Then I would promise to finish it off again then I wasn't able to do it. It was a cycle.
Then last week, I came across your channel again. You know the algorithm, it keeps showing me your videos. At first I listened to your videos and podcasts as I work in the office, because I want a distraction (I hate my work). As the days go by, I noticed I've become calmer while I do tasks, then I started washing dishes on a daily basis, I even ripped my room one night and repositioned my bed, decluttered things. Small to bigger positive changes happened to me.
Then today I woke up at 8 am, had my breakfast with your podcast on again. After that I started doing my laundry. I washed clothes after clothes. My arms and back were aching. But as I listened to you, I know I had to get it done. And I know, for me, it also has a big impact if I get it done for the first time in years. I was in the verge of giving up but I would divert myself and do positive small talks in my head. "hey, you did an amazing job, washing all the white clothes, and now you can move to the dark colored ones." "No, don't give up, just one more push, this is the moment you've been waiting for, to empty your bin".
Guys, I nearly cried when I hang the last piece of clothes. I felt like a baggage of guilt, and sadness was lifted off me. It was liberating ❤.
So I want to thank you Cas for being real, and being selfless in sharing your personal thoughts, struggles. You showed us that you are still a work in progress, you are not perfect. Your approach made a difference because it lessened the guilt that had been eating me up, I've become more accepting on what I can do at the moment. As a result it made me less anxious while I do chores, and led me to do finish more tasks.
You are a blessing, Cas. You are amazing! Thank you.

I want to say I understand your journey. I am in a similiar situation but I have energy limitations due to an autommune disease. I lost my mind years ago (depression/losses) and I accumulated many things for the "future me." Now, I have way too much and I have been slowly decluttering. It's only recently I got more serious due having breathing issues/allergies, etc. I decided recently to dump a "future" dining room set I rescued and took apart & has been sitting in my living room. I have too many clothes and I have been decluttering them too. I have found that doing one load of laundry daily and then putting it away is less exhausting. I follow youtuber Diane in Denmark and the flylady methods. It's doing something a little bit everyday and I am a work in progress! Pace yourself and I know you can do it! Good luck!

44:50 I grew up in a hoarders house, so of course I never learned to declutter, and I feel such shame at the fact that I’m 37 and not able to keep my house together in a functional way. I literally had a talk with my kids about the importance of decluttering yesterday. I apologized to them because I’m still learning the skills to do it. My youngest son was diagnosed with ADHD this year, and I know how environment is contributing to his struggles at school. It makes me feel like a horrible mother. I’ve been slowly decluttering for about 2 years now (since I discovered the channel, among others). I’ve made progress, but I work a lot, and it’s so slow. I wish from the bottom of my heart that someone would have taught me these skills as a child, and I really hope it’s not too late to instill them in my children. Sorry for the book here, but what Cass said resonated with me

      Hi Justine,
Don't be too hard on yourself. It is hard to be neat and tidy and organised in a world that keeps throwing cheap stuff at us and our family.
I had a chronic fatigue condition for over 15 years after my youngest child was born. We had just built a house and I never got any routines established to look after it! My husband is a rock and kept everything going, but he is messy so our kids never learned to tidy up.
I started getting rid of 2015 things in 2015 via nourishing minimalism blog. It took about 4 years to really see a difference but I had a process, a plan to follow.
You sound determined and focussed and can get your kids on board too so I know you will do well - little and often.
      Sending love 💕

My living room was always messy. One day I decided to declutter my books from the second shelf (only mine) and put them in a box for donation, later my little brother saw the box and took out three books and put it inside, then my older brother took out some books and put them inside.
I immediately took the box away and in the empty shelf I put their ps3 and their controllers on that one shelf nothing else. It’s been that way for months without a single item added. My next problem was the remote controls. First I set them by the tv, they never ever got back to that spot. Then, I bought a small plate to keep them inside but it never worked either. From my room I had a utensil round bamboo container i used to chuck change in but decided I didn’t want it so I put it by the tv to see it and donate it. I vacuumed the room and put the remote controllers inside so I could wipe and dust everything quickly.
…..its been *3 WEEKS* and every single time the remotes are not in use they are inside the container 😂 *I did it! I found the way to not lose them* 🎉
Now I can’t get rid of that container though

Yes! Just because you spent money on it does mean you should keep it if you don’t like it. I try to think about it like this: We go out to dinner and spend $50 or $75 or even $100 on a nice dinner and we don’t think twice about it. We enjoyed it and but now we done with it we don’t try to keep what left forever! Lol So we just need to let these things go we didn’t like or even things we did like but no longer use. We also don’t try ti get a refund for food we try and didn’t like so sometimes we try things like cosmetics and we just need to let them go.

Ok, ya'll, I'm working with restraints that I feel like most people don't have to deal with. Me and my hubby live with my mom, taking care of her... she has dementia. Not super bad yet, but definitely progressing. I want to take things off the counter, but she uses the toaster often. If I put it up, she can't find it and won't use it to make herself a snack. Most of the time, I am here and I do it, but she does get into the kitchen sometimes. I have the kitchen mostly set up for me now, because I'm the one that does the cooking, but there are still times when she hunts something that I've moved... Most of the stuff we use belongs to her. My mom is a borderline hoarder... I've gotten rid of a good bit, but my siblings, who do not live with us... one lives next door, one across town, tells me not to get rid of mom's stuff. 90% of it she don't remember and I don't use. I do budget for a storage unit so I can put all the stuff that they don't want me to get rid of in, but it is so difficult to get things right for me working within the constraints. Our house was also built in 1974 and never remodeled. I have 2... and only 2 SMALL drawers in the kitchen...

You work with what you have. If you use all the appliances then keep them on the counter if you have no other options. Maybe you have some that you rarely use and you can place is a storage place in the house . I do that with my cake mixer and waffle iron plus a few other items in basemen. I am not an expert and just giving my thoughts. And i also understand your dilemma because my old kitchen was just small cabinets …in one I removed the middle shelf so i could keep my certain things but was very frustrating.

I don’t really agree with the time will tell because it really tripped me up for about a year I had about 30 boxes and items clogging up my garage and I was too scared to part with … thought I had to go back through them and it just kept the stress levels high every time I went in there so over a few Saturdays I gritted my teeth and packed my entire car full and drove to the charity shop! I did this 3 Saturday and the final Saturday I felt such a massive sense of relief it I almost cried! But it slowed me down for about a year! Just a warning on this method

I will try this storing away the excess with my daughter when we can schedule the time to declutter her room. The clutter blind is true, but there is a giving-up depressed state of mind saying what's the use? It's too overwhelming and I wouldn't be able to maintain this cleanliness. Doing what Cass did with her daughter will take her to the finish line while letting her decide later what her daughter wants to bring back.

I usually enjoy listening to you. But I have a tiny kitchen. I have one draw for silverware and a medium bottom cabinet (14in door) and a tiny cabinet with an 8 inch door. No pots or pans will fit in that little cabinet. And then I have a cabinet underneath my sink. So I don’t have room for my toaster oven or my air fryer to go underneath I just don’t.
I wish you could at least address that not everybody can put things underneath if they have a tiny kitchen. I really wish you could stop making us feel really bad because we have a tiny kitchens.

    Hi Cass,
We thought of you when we went to Costco today.
In a recent podcast, you said that online shopping and pick up is free.
Unfortunately, it’s not. The next time you go into the store, look at the prices on the shelf, and then look at your price on the app. And that’s any store. They charge more for pick up because somebody has to pull the item and get it ready for shipment or pick up. You are paying for someone else’s labor.
Here’s an example. I bought Kirkland almond flour today for $9.99 in store. On the app, is $12.99. I bought four of them, so the difference is 12 bucks. That’s more than the cost of one of the almond flours.
If you have a long list of things to buy, it really is going to add up
Now if that’s worth it to you great.

So if you take everything off your kitchen counters where do you put it? Do you need to get them out and plug them in and make room every time you need them

@@Savannah-ed4rvI have removed everything myself long ago and have spots for everything in my covers. All except the microwave and large espresso machine. I bring it out when I need to use it ( the blender, the airfryer , toaster) and after using it I put it away in its designated spot. Some things like my cake mixer and pancake maker I keep in storage area shelf in basement along with large baking dish that I use sporadically. In few days mixer will maker will make a debut for easter baking and back to basement it goes. My kitchen always looks awesome!

    • @yanininipanini
      @yanininipanini 6 місяців тому +2

@@Savannah-ed4rv the appliances that I used most often I put in the cabinet below where I would normally used it. Similar to what Cas said. It takes only a second to put on the counter and put it away. Since the counter is always clear and theres a dedicated spot in the cabinet, I don’t need to make room. Other appliances I store in our master bedroom closet where we have our food storage. We have our bed in a smaller bedroom with a smaller closet so we could allow room for that flexibility in the master closet. Perhaps there may be an unused spot in your house, like under the bed or be creative and move things around in your home so you can make the most of your most used space. There’s no rules or cookie cutter to where you need to put things. Do what’s best for you and best of luck!

My little mental gymnastic that I use to trick my brain into being okay getting rid of unfinished hygiene products is pretending I used it. Because if I used it, it would be gone. And really, whether it’s gone because I used it, or it’s gone because I let it go, the end result is the same. Sounds crazy, but doing that little bit of mental math, that the result would be the same if I had used it, makes letting things go totally work for my brain!
