Was waiting for you to mention Return of the Native! It was the first book to pop up in my mind when you were explaining the aesthetic you loved. Loved that book, the scenery definitely elevated the mood and almost felt fantastical at times (in a good way).
Wuthering Heights was the book that hooked me in to the Victorian gothic genre, and many years later Classic and Neo Victorian gothic is the sub genre I read almost exclusively. It's very exciting to hear from other lovers of gothic literature! I will definitely have to read Return of the Native, as it sounds right up my alley.
Hope you haven't had enough of Victorian literature talk she says!!! NEVER!!! And I'm sure I'm not alone in that! I think Sylvia's lovers is my next Gaskell to pick up. I think maybe I'll like it more than most as I loved Ruth by her and that's one that normally gets put towards to bottom of people's favourites lists. We shall see xx
Never not in the mood for Victorian talk! I am currently reading How to be a Victorian by Ruth Goodman so I'm still firmly with one foot in that time period. I should reread Wuthering Heights one day, I didn't either love or hate it but wasn't very drawn to it either - the more I hear about people whose opinions has changed on that book with multiple readings, the more curious I am to revisit it. I'm definitely sold on Sylvia's Lovers based on the passage you read out, how utterly beautiful and atmospheric!
Great video! AHHHH Wuthering Heights! It is a novel in which i HATED EVERYONE yet still loved the novel. Grania, I read thanks to you and was one of my favorites for the year. I plan to re read it sometime next year. I have never read Welsh Witch or Return of the Native or Sylvia's Lovers, although now I want to :)
It really is a paradoxical puzzle 😂 Oh to hate characters so much and love a book so much. I'm so excited you loved Grania...I hope you enjoy any of these others you get to!
I love this intense, otherworldly aesthetic too, Kate! And this is a great idea for a video. I have the A Welsh Witch on my TBR, ever since you talked about it (two Victobers ago, I believe?). And Grania seems so interesting... My TBR keeps getting bigger and bigger! :)
I've returned to this video because I also love this aesthetic for Victorian novels. I have reread Grania recently and loved it even more than the first time because I took it slowly and just absorbed the story without trying to wonder what would happen . I still have not read the Welsh Witch. It is not at my library and it is difficult to find a reasonably priced copy online. I have Sylvia's Lovers on my summer TBR . I can't wait to get to it. As for Return of the Native - fabulous ! I have now read all of Hardy's novels . Not related to this video as it does not have the aesthetic you mention, but My all time favorite of his will always be J*d* The Ob**u**e ( not spelling it out so that i don't traumatize you lol) p.s. I laugh so hard whenever you mention the book that shall not be named in videos and insert the beep lol
I'm so happy to see another Victorian literature video. I love Sylvia's Lovers so much! The setting is one of my favourite aspects of it. It's so fresh and free and wonderful to be by the sea!
I'll never be tired of Victorian Kate spam!! 😂 I agree with everything you said about feeling all the feelings in your books! okay okay, I'll pick up Wuthering Heights finally......P.S. your gold cross necklace is beautiful
That's a cool idea! None come to mind immediately but I'll be thinking and mulling over this. I almost think it might be a Victorian thing but might come up with some other ones by looking through my book collection.
I never tire of hearing about Victorian literature! I can’t wait to read more Gaskell and Grania in 2020!
I hope you enjoy all of it!
I love Victorian novels! I just picked up collections of Victorian ghost stories
There were so many good ghost stories that came out in that era!

How cool that you were thinking of it! Such a powerful novel.

Thank you!!! I really enjoyed Ruth - I forget to talk about it because I'm so enthusiastic about her other works.

Im persuaded 😊 Sylvia’s Lovers and The Return of the Native, maybe even Wuthering Heights all sound like books I’d enjoy. Thank you.
I hope you enjoy whichever ones you get to!
Oh, thank you for sharing! This aesthetic is up my alley. Tess of D'urberville was in this category for me as well.
I love the photos you posted to evoke the gothic-ness.
Thank you!

I'm glad I successfully communicated my idea! I hope you enjoy any of the other books on this list.

Thank you, Meghan! Yes - I really feel like it wouldn't have been nearly as atmospheric if it weren't at the seaside.
Agreed!
I love hearing why people love the books they do, so I liked your video a lot!
Thank you, Juan! I had a lot of fun filming this.
Great job
I'll never be tired of Victorian Kate spam!! 😂 I agree with everything you said about feeling all the feelings in your books! okay okay, I'll pick up Wuthering Heights finally......P.S. your gold cross necklace is beautiful
Thank you!!! My grandparents brought back a Jerusalem cross necklace for each of their granddaughters after their trip to Israel.
@@katehowereads wow! love it!
Would you consider talking about books written after the Victorian period that you have loved for the same reason?
That's a cool idea! None come to mind immediately but I'll be thinking and mulling over this. I almost think it might be a Victorian thing but might come up with some other ones by looking through my book collection.
Victorian literature all year long.💕
What was the name of the book after Wuthering Heights & by who?
Thanks for sharing!!
Grania by Emily Lawless!
