Wrong. They arent failing. He wasnt even clear on the engine. 3.5L /3.7L cyclone V6. Owned 2 Edge's in last 10yrs. Both perfectly reliable & high resale.
Question from a novice. Are they somehow truly made to purposely fail? Or are they just cheaply made and they know that so they do their best with the crap they are given?
Hey Scotty I’m an old jet aircraft mechanic turned airline captain and for my money your the best car expert out there. Thanks for keeping us informed.
I bought my 2007 Ford Edge SE in 2013 with 43K miles on it with one owner. Aside from normal maintenance, this car has been solid and reliable. I'm on 160K right now, but watching this video just scared me knowing that the water pump is inside the engine 😳! I pray I don't get jinxed because I have a lot of respect for my Edge; it's been a good boy!
Need to flush the coolant and replace with new. I've done mine with Amsoil coolant and it's all good. We have a 2010 Edge Limited that now has 178K. Never had issue with water pump...
Peter L if you make cars to last longer the manufacturers figure they have make repairs and parts rediculousy expensive, we had a customer come in with 2015 Ford F-250 platinum and just to replace the muffler was $2800.00 and that was not on.! another stupid ford idea was a rusted oil pan well the pan straddles the front axil on another F 250 the pan costs $176.00 oem but costs $5200.00 to have it installed Ford says you have to jack the front of the truck up but You also have to drop and disconnect the front axil from the truck and lower the axil from the truck. 😕😟😤😠
An aside to this: The water pumps often fail on the 3.5 liter V6 engines up to model year 2011. The later build date 11s and all 12s and later have an updated part that supposedly lasts the life of the vehicle, though the design remains the same. A relative has a very late build date 2011 Explorer with 230,000 miles and it's on the original water pump.
That pump usually last around 250,000 miles and that engine has a rated service life of 500,000 miles. One of the best engines on the road, that's why it's in a lot of First Responders vehicles.
My 2014 Taurus water pump failed at 75,000 miles, I took very good care of the car expecting it to last for a very long time and that didn't worked. A design flaw can't be fixed with preventive maintenance, the water pump is going to fail sooner or later and in the worst cases could destroy the engine like happened to me.
I have an old 1995 Ford Explorer that my parents gave me. It now has more than 370,000 miles on it. It never gives us problems and it drives better than our newer late-model vehicle. The only money that we spend on it is in changing the fluids regularly.
What are you talking about? If you'd just change your coolant with OE spec coolant, torque your spark plugs correctly and change them at the regular intervals, while applying $10,000 worth of aftermarket repairs, you'd have a reliable vehicle!
Marc Milton-Talbot Yep,, I checked VIN number on my Focus and transmission was changed 4 times prior to my last one which was under warranty $4500 for trany completely free...At least Ford stands behind their warranties and they fix it for free...
I bet he'd be a great neighbor.... I really enjoy his videos. Now on a side note.... I think we all agree Scotty is a real go-getter; the man is driven and a wealth of auto knowledge, however, the person above him, working the strings, works harder and has to be exhausted.
Hello Scotty--I have one of those V6's from Ford, 75,000 miles and out goes the water pump. I caught it early. Antifreeze level going down slowly and could smell it. Coolant was getting past the first gasket into the weep hole not into the oil pan.. Over $2,000 later (at dealer), $500.00 for a rental car after dealer had the car for two weeks, back on the road. Had I known the water pump was inside like that I would have never bought the car. Can't believe anyone would engineer something like that. Poor Mazda owners that have that same engine Mazda was buying from Ford.
My sons flex went out last year, took 10 hours. The guy at autozone sold us this special sealer for the job, used it and it leaked everywhere. Sold us the wrong stuff. Had to tear it all apart again, only took 8 hours the next time. Be sure to use the correct sealer! What a giant pain is the ARS.
My 20 year old Corolla still has the original water pump, its driven outside the engine by the serpentine aka fan, aka drivebelt, and it takes approximately a half hour to replace. Im happy
Traded my 2008 Edge in at 285,000 with original water pump on the 3.5. I am currently driving a 2011 Ford Edge with a 3.5 and it has 300,000 miles. 2018 Ford Edges do not have the 3.5. All ecoboost. External water pumps. Maintenance is key to keeping the water pump running. Coolant and oil changes are important.
Even bigger mistake: Buying an expensive gas-powered car. UA-cam search "Tony Seba robin hood conference" to see a half-hour presentation explaining in detail why. For most people, the best option is an under-$15k (or ideally under-$10k) used car. A 2009-12 Avalon or ES350 is a fantastic and reliable large sedan alternative. A 2002+ Panther body (except for Marauder) is a great Ford large sedan platform with low and simple maintenance, and is cheaper than the Avalon/ES. Only three weaknesses: 1. The RWD isn't good in harsh wintry climates 2. If you have young kids in the car, after lowering the windows slightly to prevent heat issues, turn off the accessories so they can't accidentally raise a window when leaning against the rocker switch on the door 3. If you have engine misfiring, fix it fast to save the catalytic convertor
@@thunderspence8183 What he fails to mention is most of these V6 engines go 200-300 miles before any problems. I've owned 3 edges with that engine and never a problem, just don't drive the crap out of it and you'll be fine....everyone has an opinion about everything, enjoy your car!!!
When he said 14 year old car talking about a 2006 I was so confused until I realized 2006 was 14 years ago and my life has flashed before my eyes and I thought 14 years ago was 1996 and that I was still 14 but I’m 24 and swimming in college debt and pandemic stress and Scotty is here to remind me of this .
I avoided buying a Taurus because I knew about the internal water pump and the engine out service that's needed to change it. Chevy's 3.0 Duramax is now in competition with its belt driven oil pump that requires the engine to be separated from the transmission to change it and if the belt breaks before that, you're screwed 🤦🏻♂️.
Ray S I'll look at the type of buyer that purchases those vehicles, likely an older audience that probably doesn't do as much driving But I wouldn't even take a chance on something that I know will have to be replaced ,
Ray S Yea my sister had an 08 Edge as daily commuter. Traded it with 170,000 miles and besides routine maintenance, only had to replace the ball joints and a wheel bearing if I remember correctly. The original battery lasted almost ten years. Meanwhile the oldest sister had a Buick Enclave that literally started to fall apart at 2 years old, the transmission went out and the timing chains eventually failed. As I watch these videos, I’m thoroughly convinced that GM has lost their quality over the years and Ford is constantly improving each generation.
@@rays7437 Exactly it's overblown. I work on police fleet and they use this engine. Believe me police beat the crap out of these cars and water pump failures are rare. But to be fair it is a bad design and water pumps will fail eventually.
I can vouch for the AT 205, I have an 03 Acura MDX with a leaking rear main seal. I used the product, the leak magically stopped after about 2 months of driving, and hasn’t reappeared.
Scott I like your show but I'm a Ford master mechanic and in the owner manual recommended to replace at 150k miles and most customers replace around 140k regular maintenance and only takes 6 hours all the labor
@Todd Toddy We will see. I’ve had it for 3 years and haven’t spent anything on it except for oil changes, tire rotations, and washing. I think it’s a pretty fine vehicle considering the garbage other manufacturers are selling.
On some FORD AWD vehicles the transfer case is next to the catalytic converter. It cooks the oil over time. I believe there is a TSB to change the transfer case oil periodically. The Police versions have a cooler.
Ford 3.5l V6 in a FWD/AWD Explorer: It has to be a major leak, one that the owner would have to ignore. It will leak externally first. I have this same engine in my Explorer. You do the timing chains and water pump at the 100k mile service like you are SUPPOSED TO, and you will not see the issue. If you are buying a used car with this motor around the 100k mile mark, ensure you see proof that the maintenance was done, otherwise plan on doing it or walk away.
Finally someone with a solution to the problem. You'd swear most people believe their car is so perfect and bulletproof nothing major ever happens to it.
The 3.5 internal water pump is why I didn't buy a Taurus. I kept my 3.0 '06 500,which I bought new. It's been a great car. I replaced the water pump at 305,000 miles. It was a simple 1/2 hr. job.
I remember a mechanic friend of mine was looking for a bad ground connection hours later he told me.........I said WTF just run a ground wire from the battery to the case of the ECM viola problem solved in 10 minutes. If you know it is a ground just run a new one.
Hey Scotty, You should look up Freezing Door latches on the 2015-2018 Ford F-150 and Super Duty they either won’t close, or none of the locks will unlock the door when the outside temperatures plummet down below freezing. “Doors still freezing after recall 18N03.”
Since when can you replace a water pump in an hour or two? In a Honda V6 you would have to spend quite a bit and remove a bunch of stuff to get to the water pump.
Well, my old Ford Falcon with a 4.0 litre straight 6 engine is one that can be replaced that easily. In fact, everything on it can, she's designed right.
Chiltons recommends that you drop the engine to replace the water pump on the mercury sable. There are videos on UA-cam that show how to do it within the engine bay.
Have 2010 Taurus. That exactly what happened.lucky for me i bought the extended warranty .dealer had car a week .it leeked into the engine..engine had to be pulled out and cleaned along with replacing the water pump. It now has been working for a couple years.
I had a small oil leak in 2000 honda civic, put that reseal in (according to manufactures specifications.. you use less or more depending on the size of the engine ) worked. Stop the leak. It's been a year and 8 months and still no leak. Great stuff
Ford in its infinite wisdom, designed the 3.5L to replace the 3.0L V6 and the only way to fit the 3.5L into the 3.0 engine space is to jam the water pump in the valley between the two cylinder banks. If the owner is lucky the first seal will go bad so the coolant flows out the weep hole. If the second seal goes bad the coolant spills down into the oil pan. Also, another common problem is that the bearings go bad in the pump so the impeller flies off causing all kinds of damage. It is a horrendous design by Ford. I owned a Fusion sport with the 3.5L engine that ran great but had to get rid of it before the water pump destroyed the engine or pay a minimum of $1700 just for the pump to be replaced. The warranties for the replacement were an absolute joke.
I'm sure they've double-sealed the water pump shaft with a vent to atmosphere between them. It's commonly done in industry to eliminate the possibility of cross-contamination in valves - CIP in your milk products is not a good look - but it does need maintenance reasonably promptly when one seal does begin to leak (either the oil one or the water one, in this case).
@@RexApplegate How is changing out fluid at a good regular interval destroying an automatic transmission? I thought this was common sense maintenance. Of course Ford stated 100k service interval for my 5r55e.. no way was I counting on that.
I have one of those ford engines with the waterpump inside the engine. Once I learned this, I was very disappointed. The replacement task/labor is ridiculous.
7:06 - to release the '18 Camry's electronic brakes, you press and hold the 'hold' button, then while still holding 'hold' you press and hold the 'brake' button next to it and the red light should turn off. To engage the brakes again, you pull up on the 'brake' button.
Yup. Been telling people about these engines for a while. My brother bought a 2012 Taurus in 2014 and it blew up at 90,000 miles. Worst part is there is no way to even tell the waterpump is going bad until your engine is toast. And the stupid turbine inside the water pump is cheap plastic.
I have a 09 V6 Edge, 175,000 miles the fans quit working, cheap fix but I needed to be towed, overheating. Also when getting gas you, and the pump shuts off you can put couple of more gallons in the tank, slowly filling. Onetime I almost put 4 gallons extra in just to see how much it would take.
I will make you feel better...97 Ford Taurus...new transmission...around $3000 CAD....then a few years later second V6 engine...$2500...and it was a used engine...parts and labour. This DOES NOT count all other repairs the car needed. I actually thank Ford for my ford experience...between GM and FORD, they cured me to Toyota. Owning Toyota was the most brilliant move i ever made in my life. I kid you not...Toyota builds a great product. The quality is lite years ahead of GM and FORD And well every auto maker.
"Hey Ralph, where should we put the water pump? Norton my boy, let's put it in the timing chain compartment so you don't have to pay for a belt to drive it. Ralph, you're a genius!"
This isn't Ford's doing, but the 2007 model year Edges are under recall for Takata airbags. Most of us by now are familiar with that. If you aren't, the airbags can explode too forcefully and shoot out metal fragments that can injure or kill drivers or passengers. It isn't just Ford either. Many other early to late 2000 model year cars have the same recall, Honda being a bigger concern.
I owned a Ford once. Found out too late the engineers decided to put plastic parts INSIDE the engine. (Timing chain tensioner) of course it wore out at 70,000 miles. This was after 13 recalls. Had enough. Only own Toyota’s and Honda’s now.
Excellent move. I bought a few Lexus' and have never looked back. I look forward to 300k TROUBLE-FREE miles on each. Owning this truck was just one headache after the next. 77k miles water pump failure. New engine. No reason at all for an engine to fail with under 100k miles...NONE.
Ford designed an internal water pump driven off the timing chain? Water pump gasket fails and catastrophically destroys the engine? Replacement is booked at nearly 12 hours? That’s crazy! Where’d they get that weird idea? Dodge (Mitsubishi) 2.7 L V6 2000-present!
Such junk! The 2017-2019 escapes have a very similar issue with getting coolant into the engine! My 2017 escape with 35k miles is having transmission issues, Ford is telling me the whole transmission needs to be replaced and they have 5 other escapes ahead of me with the same issue ! And they have had it for over a month, we have 7 months left on the lease. I’ve reached out to ford corporate and have requested they terminate the lease immediately and take the car back! So done with American cars, Toyota or Lexus for me!
JeffreyRandell omg fr?! My 16 escape has 120,000 miles. I’m so sorry you’ve had this problem. I feel like all cars except Toyota’s are hit or mis today.
JeffreyRandell that makes me so sad. I put a lot of miles on all of my vehicles (which I have 6) although; my escape has been very good to me. I love it! Although I have a freind with an escape who has had an issue or two with their escape.
The Saturn turn signal problem: If you splice the bad signal wire to the same side good connection at the body control module the current draw will be doubled. Recommend changing signal lamps to LED's to avoid overloading the good BCM circuit.
Hey Scotty, my 2012 Fusion had this water pump issue about 60,000 miles. The warranty was expired, but extended warranties are a life saver.. can you say $2000 job?😂
2001 Pontiac 2.4 had similiar. Local mechanic replaced water pump for a little less than $500. Pump was 16 years old and caught it early. The only car I want to buy is a Model T.
I drove a tow truck for a living. I tow a ford everyday lol. Through the last 1 yr and half most of the Fords that I put on a tow truck were younger than 7 years old.
I will be buying an SUV within the next couple of weeks. I guess it will not be the Ford Explorer, which was on my list. I am still considering the Chevy Traverse, the Buick Enclave, and the Dodge Durango. Do you tow a lot of either of these?
Yep, happened to me on my 2010 fusion sport with about 125K miles a few years back. Cost me $2400. But I had a lot of other parts replaced at the same time. The engine had to come out. I still have the car with 170K miles on it.
@@Sturmbannführer88 I believe I did around 100k miles. I could tell when it broke and pulled over immediately. At first I didn't realize what happened and smelled antifreeze. So I filed it up and it just poured out. Water was in the oil. But at that point I didn't start or drive it and has it towed to the dealer and was quoted over $3k for the job and so I had it towed to an independent shop. I'm sure it will let loose at 250k miles, but I don't drive it as much so it should last for many more years, hopefully.
Yes, the ford 3.5 in particular. Even if the water pump doesn't leak, it's very expensive to replace because top of the engine has to come apart. A bleeder hole is supposed to take leaked coolant outside the engine, but frequently enough that fails to work as designed.
Reading around on the internet after watching this post, thankfully the internal water pump is only found on front drive 3.5 Ecoboost engines. If you own a F150 Ecoboost you're good. I own a 2.7L 4x4 for 2.5 years now and love it. Recently test drove a Tundra and realized how much better the 2.7 EB is vs the huge 5.7L V8..
I lost a 2009 ford edge with 190,000 miles. Coming home from work at night heard a strange knocking noise park it next day drove to service center engine destroyed from water pump failure. Its a shame because the engine and trans. were still strong. P.S I was quoted 1900 for water pump replacement but water was in engine or 8500 for new engine lol needless to say I junked it.
Great large sedan alternatives are the 2009-2012 Toyota Avalon / Lexus ES350, and the 2002+ Ford Panther platform (excluding the Marauder). Both are very reliable and simple to maintain. The Panther platform is cheaper, but has three weaknesses: 1.
For the guy with the 2018 Camry, the electric parking break can be taken apart and the automatic piston can be retracted with an allen, I’ve done it myself... good luck
Don’t own a V6, but seems like most Ford SUVs have a common issue with coolant leaking into the engine. Happened to a bunch of people, including me. I have a 2017 Ford Escape and treated the car with excellent care. Too bad it was all under warranty. I feel bad for those who were out of warranty...
Hey Scotty, I have a 1986 Ford Thunderbird with a 302. It’s been really reliable since I bought it in 2007. It has 225k miles on the body and about 100k miles on the engine. As some of the parts are getting older, I was wondering if the parts for my car are going to be hard to come by and will they be expensive fixes? Right now I’m just needing to replace the rear end. Thanks for the help!
We have a 2012 Edge, but it has the EcoBoost in it. So no worries on the water pump or the AWD PTU issues. We also have a 2013 F-150 EcoBoost (94k miles) and a 2015 Taurus with the 3.5 (90k miles) I'm wondering how the Taurus will do once it gets higher mileage. Has bumper to bumper until 120k miles. I'm hoping if it's going to blow, it does it before the warranty is up. But I've seen the 3.5 with 250k miles still running great. How many miles did your Edge have? I've heard if you keep up with coolant flushes the issue can be prevented but I'm not sure.
120k on my explorer with this design. I do agree it's stupid and hope she lasts but I drained all coolant. No flush and replaced with ford factory green and 100k. Will change again at 130k. Fingers crossed.
Before this video, I saw the SUV and was thinking water pump.... 😂.. 05,06 Ford 500... Mercury Montego 06... I drove my 2006 Mercury for 5 years... Zero problems..

Most Manufacturers like Ford, does crap like that to profit off repairs. That’s criminal!
sadly most companies do that ,even Toyota is not immune, remember the Toyota pickups Scotty complains about where they put the starter at. :/
What are you talking about? If you'd just change your coolant with OE spec coolant, torque your spark plugs correctly and change them at the regular intervals, while applying $10,000 worth of aftermarket repairs, you'd have a reliable vehicle!
Wow, it's like, companies intentionally use scummy practices because they can get away with it and some idiots will always defend them!
Ford..of dual clutch transmission fame.
Marc Milton-Talbot Yep,, I checked VIN number on my Focus and transmission was changed 4 times prior to my last one which was under warranty $4500 for trany completely free...At least Ford stands behind their warranties and they fix it for free...
Yes, I had one of these engines. I didn't realize it when I bought the vehicle, but I soon sold it and bought a vehicle with an external water pump.
I work at Ford. This is true. The 3.5 v6 is notorious for leaking water pumps. Just replacing is 8hours and ya gotta drop the motor. Stay clear.
You forgot to mention the heated tail gate feature in fords. That way your hands won't freeze when you are pushing it back to the dealership.

Yup I do a lot of these water pumps under warranty. Pretty easy to do once the timing covers off. 😅

You prevented me from making a huge mistake. Thank you.
Only three weaknesses:
1. The RWD isn't good in harsh wintry climates
2. If you have young kids in the car, after lowering the windows slightly to prevent heat issues, turn off the accessories so they can't accidentally raise a window when leaning against the rocker switch on the door
3. If you have engine misfiring, fix it fast to save the catalytic convertor

It was a simple 1/2 hr. job.

Pretty much any pump that is external (driven by the serpentine belt, not the timing belt/chain)

Like the 2002 ford exploder 4.0 v6. Horrible engine
I don't have a Ford, but the 3.5 Ford Duratec is considered to be one of the best V6 engines out there.
Also gotta love Ford's transmission filters that require transmission removal to replace them.
Just drain and refill every 60k.
@@MrDavidknigge As a professional mechanic myself, I hope you're joking because that is a good way to destroy an automatic transmission.

Yup. Been telling people about these engines for a while. My brother bought a 2012 Taurus in 2014 and it blew up at 90,000 miles. Worst part is there is no way to even tell the waterpump is going bad until your engine is toast. And the stupid turbine inside the water pump is cheap plastic.
The knowledge Scotty gives in his videos is priceless.

This isn't Ford's doing, but the 2007 model year Edges are under recall for Takata airbags. Most of us by now are familiar with that.
