@@SnowdropWood Joanna David, Angela Thorne and Barbara Lott, complementing flowers from the same English acting garden. I truly wish they had worked together some more.
Thanks so much for uploading this! This is so much more authentic than the modernised version, I've always loved this version the best, ever since I was a child 💜
Brilliant. I was like Petrova, I did ballet for seven years as a child but always was far more interested in aeroplanes. I'm named after Amy Johnson and ended up an aerospace engineer bizarrely, but I do love ballet too (so long as I don't have to actually do it, because I'm rubbish). Very true to the book as well.
Madame is so believable as though she really is the estimable character she portrays. I love her musings about the beauty of dance and of putting one's heart and soul completely into one's craft. Inspiring, lovely film and I love the ballet music throughout. Thank you for posting this.
The great Mary Morris, who was a memorable Number 2 In The Prisoner, and played three(!) roles in The Thief of Bagdad (1940), including (very memorably) the blue-skinned multi-armed Halima
I remember watching this on tv when I was ten. I was taking ballet lessons and wanted to be a dancer. Ballet Shoes was my favorite book and I still have my copy.
Thank you so much for making this film available. I remember watching it as a child in the 70s. It was lovely to spend this evening watching it with my 9 year old daughter. We both loved it.
I loved this version I had the bit in my head when Dr Jakes had a cold and she went and gave Pauline a ginger drink! My grandmother gave this on video to me as a child and I loved it this version. It reminds me of my love of acting and dancing.
1:13:07 this is one of my favourite bits of this adaption, giving petrova some talent, rather than the more recent version where she’s just a dunce at everything. It’s also nice to see Pauline and Posy’s weaknesses. Just that one line adds so much to all their characters
A childhood favourite! Thanks for uploading. I actually purchased the DVD some years ago, but it's been 'borrowed' by the daughter of a friend...which I understand entirely!
You have brought my childhood, Bee. I watched this on TVOntario when I was about 7 or 8. My "Madame" was Mrs Keese who had trained and danced with the Bolshoi. In my 30s I got the opportunity to be a Cannonball doll, a character role for a night with The National Ballet of Canada but for 5 minutes, but I remembered Madame of Ballet Shoes pronouncements and danced it with Pride. Would that children (and Adults) today could possess the self-discipline as portrayed by "Madame". As it is, seeing this again, I aim to meet it as she did.
What a lovely message to read, Ms KMaitland. :) I'm always happy to make the acquaintance of anyone who loved this film as much as I did growing up. :)
You're most welcome. :) I had Ballet Shoes on VHS when I was little and loved it. Then I couldn't find it anywhere for years and years until I found this dvd, so I thought I'd help out anyone else in the same situation. For as long as it remains up, anyway.
Tears appear with the first bars of music. Have to watch this every few years or so. Pretty sure it was previously posted. Agree the book plot is better but this is still a marvellous production and all the characters fit perfectly. Didn't get on with the newer version.
I don't suppose we'll ever know. Unless she's still living and comments on here one day! The credits say the dancers came from the Bush Davies school and the Italia Conti stage school. It may be the dancer who was Posy's dance double, you see her footwork in the scene with Manoff.
@@SnowdropWood love this version. Know that Posy had a dance double in the later 2007 film but as far as I know she didn't have one in the earlier version as they chose 3 actresses who were training seriously at full time dancing schools. Think Sarah Prince who played Posy went to Elmhurst Ballet School
So Posy Fossil is the active youngest with green eyes, red long hair, fair skin, snow white teeth, rosy cheeks and lips, and sun tan freckles and beauty marks who likes performing arts and being on stage.
So Petrova Fossil is the athletic middle sister with violet eyes, brunette short hair, fair skin, snow white teeth, rosy cheeks and lips, and sun tan freckles and beauty marks who likes visual handicrafts and being in the sky.
Tbh I really disappointed the way this treat Winifred. All the issue is that she incredibly talented, probably most talented in the school, but becouse she's poor and not pretty as Pauline, she's always lose to Pauline. Making her not talented is loosing all Noel's criticism about castings and choosing becouse beauty.
I can empathise with that, they did change a major point about Winifred's character. I don't feel they made her untalented though, just less confident.
So Pauline Fossil is the academic oldest with blue eyes, golden blonde medium hair, fair skin, snow white teeth, rosy cheeks and lips, and sun tan freckles and beauty marks who likes literary design and being on screen.
R.I.P Angela Thorne, our Sylvia 'Garnie' Brown. 25th January 1939 - 16th June 2023. 🩰🤎
Oh goodness. RIP.
I loved watching this as a child. The Tchaikovsky at the beginning was so utterly captivating. Why did children's TV back then seem so intelligent?
I love anything related to performance, so thanks for posting this and what a fine selection they made for the cast
You're welcome, Adrian.

Posy of course, as I was obsessed with ballet.

What do you call the beautiful pointe ballet ballerina girl dance music from 27:35 to 28:01?
I wish they would make a version of this that followed the book
Poor Mrs. Simpson always seems to get written out doesn't she! But I still very much enjoy both this version and the Emma Watson version. :)
Hello from 2020:)))))))
the gramphone.
Are there any more thankyou for up loading this one

Thank you for uploading this film. The best version of, 'Ballet Shoes', in my opinion. Is this version available on dvd?
It occasionally shows up on R1 dvd, but I have never seen it on R2.
Thank you. I used to borrow this film from the library. A lot. I prefer it to White boots.

Do you mean Dr. Jakes? The actress was named Sheila Keith.

Haha yes! Wasn't she adorable? :) I didn't make the connection until 5 or so years back, it was a revelation! I think she looks almost the same now.
Petrova. :)

What is the theme tune music?
I'm afraid I don't know, it is familiar and I presume that it's from a famous ballet. I will try to find out for you. :)
Okay, apparently it is from The Sleeping Beauty by Tchaikovsky. Listen here: ua-cam.com/video/ZF1C-gXyObk/v-deo.html
Oh that is it! I searched it and as soon as I heard the music it reminded me of Ballet Shoes! Thank you so much!
Act three pas de trios for Gold and Silver and Cavelier. Different versions use it slightly differently.
