Thank you, I love teaching others about this work and I love being able to teach my nephew even more! Patience is key when it comes to teaching for sure. ✌
Got my nephew to help me on a patio. Had him help shoot grades with transit and take grades. Then the second job he grabbed the transit set it up and told my friend to hold tape and took grades. 👍👍👍 It's Great to pass the trade along. God bless. Looks great. I like the accent.
Hey brother, that is awesome! It’s so important to get them out there early in life to get them interested in the trades. Good on you for taking him with you and teaching him. More people doing that would really help this crazy world. ✌🏻
learnt a lot, great design. Funny I'm always telling customers that crushed stone hold and prolongs paving than sand and they just don't get it. Anyway I saved your video and will show 1 customer why I stressed that we should use crushed stone than sand as a base
Nice, glad to hear it! It is all about this (Open Grade Base) prep method that I use. It is far better than the traditional dense grade / sand method. Here is a video I made about the prep method in much more detail 👉ua-cam.com/video/ChaJe3JqD6I/v-deo.html
I just want to say thank you for all of your guidance and I have decided to tackle my own patio thi summer. I am not afraid because of the time you took to explain everything. I can't thank you guys enough for all of the details, tips and videos for paver work! I can't wait to get started and I'll keep you posted and shout outs during my project! Take care and god bless!
No problem man, I love feedback like this! It was honestly one of the big reasons I started this channel. I want to share the work I do with people and teach them how I do things. The comments and emails I get from people doing their projects are so cool to me. I love this work. Good luck on your project and I’m looking forward hearing about the progress ✌🏻
Broooo! That job looks killer! Your one Of the best hardscaper a I’ve ever seen! Travis was killing it. He was laying to the line like an old pro. He’s like a teenager and a grown man all at the same time. He’s the man. And I liked how you split the blocks. I once rockfaced those caps for a pier one time on a brick wall we were doing. Your a beast keep up the great work!!!
Thanks brother, I appreciate it! Travis definitely kills it and is very mature for his age. I love having him around. And sometimes you just got to hand chisel some blocks to get that nice face... ✌
you whatbis really cool qbout both our stories is.. we both started our youtube channel and buisness at the same time and growing it in front of your subscribers.. good point
I totally agree bro, our timing on things are very similar. Been watching you for 1-1/2 now. Very cool watching you grow man. I’m really glad you enjoy my videos too. UA-cam is cool like that.
I gotta admit I'm impressed with the way you can cut straight vertically.....I'm used to using an MK table block saw to cut...I think my saws are too bulky...might have to try the 420....Best, Steve
Very meticulious work! It would be very interesting to see a cost break down of materials and labor of your jobs to really see if this is attainable for most people

Can you please give me the colour combination also can you please tell me the equipment and material you used in this project. I am going to start my back garden thank you
- The main pavers used for this patio are manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Blu 60) and the color tone is called (Shale Grey). - The border pavers are manufactured by (Uni-Lock). The style is called (Treo) and the color tone is called (Charcoal). - The wall block used in this project is manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Semma) and the color tone is called (Shale Grey). - The wall block cap is manufactured by (Techo Bloc). The style is called (Architectural Cap) and the color tone is called (Onyx Black).
Thank you so much for your videos. I learnt so much and did my 27x23 patio following your instruction! One more question, between garage and first paver, there is a small gap, how do you seal it? Using stone chips?
My pleasure, congratulations on the install! I would recommend the stone chips for sure, that will let any water that may hit it drain into the base material. ✌
Killed it as usual!! Dumb question, why do some of the wall block have webs and others are solid? Are the solid block made to be pinned ? Just trying to learn some of this trade! Thanks for all the great content!!
Thank you! That wall system gives you some solids in the mix in case you need to make splits for corners. Other than that you just use them as a regular wall unit. Cool design. They also sell the corners separately obviously so you don’t have to make them if you don’t want to.
Thank you. I get a good amount of jobs from material suppliers who give out recommendations to people who call and ask who installs their product. I also get a lot of jobs from posting work pictures and offer free estimates on the post. And last but not least, previous customers who want more work done and customers who give you referrals. ✌
I am finding your series very very helpful as I am planning to tackle a similar project in my new home although I am still intimidated specifically about drainage as it rains a lot here in Seattle. I am wondering if you do video consultations? That would be so great to get an expert's opinion on my space.
Hello, I'm glad my videos are helping you! This base method I use is excellent for very rainy areas. I don't typically do consultations but i may be able to help with some advice. I think I received a message from you earlier. I will try to respond at some point tomorrow or over the weekend.
Thank you, I try not to lay pavers over concrete. But It can be done depending on the circumstances. Setting pavers in mortar is not something I would recommend. But if you are able to spread 1-2 inches of the 3/8" crushed stone that I screed with for these patios on top of the concrete, that would be the best way. But if the concrete is in rough shape, I typically recommend removing it completely
Great work man 👍🏼 I’ve heard you mention in previous videos how driveways are a little different. Have you ever done one and what makes the install different from patios?
Thanks brother! I have done a permeable paver driveway before. It was a really good size driveway on a slope. A few years before I started this channel…. So what is different is that you need a minimum of 12” of the clean crushed base stone, compacted in lifts of 4”. On top of the first 2 lifts, you need to lay geogrid on top and then backfill and compact. That extra stone will really help with drainage and the geogrid and extra compaction will really help to stabilize the stone under the pressure of vehicular traffic. Also, you need to use thicker pavers than the average pavers used for foot traffic only applications. So a few differences but basically the same method…
I really like the Techo Bloc Shale Grey main paver with the Semma Wall and Architecural Cap Onyx Black. I also like the matching border paver, but I don't know which style to go with. What would be your recommendations?
I always recommend people go with what they think looks best. Some don't really like the bold contrast and I am completely cool with that. I want customers to choose something they will not regret in the end. I suggest you keep looking at examples of contrasting borders vs non contrasting borders until you are sure of your decision, because it is one that you will live with for a long time ✌
@The Christian Hardscaper Thank you for the quick response. I appreciate all your videos, by the way. Love the detailed explanations. I'm curious, do you have any videos where you put lights on pillars or on steps and also railings on steps?
Quick question I can’t seem to get the bare ground level is it normal to have a little bit of unevenness in the soil? Does it make a huge difference when you put in gravel?
Thank you! Pavers and walls last many years when done correctly around here. But when done incorrectly, a few cold winters will show all the flaws in the install. Using the Open Grade Base method we use is key to allow water to drain freely. ✌
So I have a question and maybe you can help me or someone else here can answer. I'm going to start a walkway in a few weeks hopefully and the customer wants to put down Boston city hall brick, and the clay bricks are concaved on the underside, my question is will your technique work with this style of brick or will it sink in more than a regular cement paver? Do you think each one will need to be set into the base? This will be the first time I will be using the 3/4 clean and the chip. thx
So yes, I think this method is exactly what you want to use for the clay bricks. It will keep them dry and more stable than sand. Unfortunately with any clay brick walkway or patio, there is a lot more fine tuning to make it level.... Some need to be hammered down more than others, but it is still very possible with this 3/4 - chip method. Good luck with the project and I hope you like the method when you try it, I have never looked back since I tried it once.... ✌
It is called (Chip Stone) around here. It is also called (HPB - High Performance Bedding) and also (PBS - Premium Bedding Stone). It is a 3/8" clean, crushed stone with no fines in it. It helps with water drainage and is far more stable then sand. ✌

Sweet time lapse showing the paver settle into the rocks. Now I know it's actually moving down.
