I know all the Hoyo / Hoyomodel games are popular and very well made but I do miss the smaller scale gacha games like FFBE. All thats left from those games is Romancing Saga RU and Last cloudia, Both great games but it is a shame we are not seeing them anymore. My main issue with the hoyogames is when I play a AAA game I into a AAA game mood then when the Gacha game elements prop up ( Stamina , Weekly Limits , Grindy RNG equips) Suddenly i feel like a weird disconnect with the game and the gacha elements, theres also the issue of super safe and boring character design because of the high cost of character development ( Dev-wise) so they have to make sure characters sell well. I really do hope we see a return to some smaller scale but high in depth RPG gacha games, I havnt quit mobile games and I will still always give anything from SQEX a shot. I do really want a new decent FF-gacha , I hope the FFXIV:crystal world game delivers but we will see.
nice video as always. quote 8:02 ," why wouldn't the japanese just do that (multi platform release), and I (cabbage) keep saying, they could but they won't. Japanese just too worried about investing that much time and money into something not for console, and japanese video game company stubbornly tied to their idea of their games on their consoles". I agree on this. they might be still latch on the way the console game golden era (playstation/nintendo/etc) where the game can only be played exclusively on their console, and let's just face it, they really profited from that. But, the era has changed, the PC now can also play the console game (with the right spec), and I don't think (personally) that being stubborn on the idea of their games on their console is the right way if they want to go world wide. as my friend say, " I would rather buy a PC with high spec, than the newest console, since with my PC I can play most of the game that I want rather than a console, which it is restricted to certain game" though if I may ask, what do you think about a game with turn based tactics like Final fantasy tactics but released on multi platform? it has solo player mode, with multiple ending, and the story is continued on DLC content, but it also has gatcha system, do you think it will prevail? or do you think it will fail? I heard that the game also will be released on nintendo switch....and yes, it is a chinese developer game....the name is sword of convalaria, and the sales report on the 1st month, has 50% of revenue come from japanese according to some site, which I think this mean that japanese also interested in that game....
If Genshin was the biggest paradigm shift in mobile gaming, then I think the next big shift will be when one of these high budget, "AAA" mobile games shuts down. A lot of Genshin (and other Hoyo game) players are new to mobile games, and haven't really experienced game shutdowns before. A game of that size and scope shutting down will alter how people perceive these games, including how they spend. Granted, I don't think it will be a Hoyo game that is the first to shut down. They have enough of a loyal fanbase and basically print money with their games. Plus the games themselves, while they have faults and are not immune to criticism, have such a high degree of polish and quality that they earn a dedicated fanbase. No, I think it will be some of these copycat games that are starting to come out, some of whom are clearly being made by developers who can't handle the scope of the project. WuWa had a shaky start because it really should have stayed in development for 6 months to a year longer, but it was pushed out in an extremely unpolished and unoptimized state. As an example, my old iPhone could run it in a semi-playable state, but my high end PC couldn't run it at all. More worrying for WuWa is that its sales seem to come mostly from Western players, as Asian markets panned the game. I don't think Western players are going to sustain the game long-term, given how fickle we are with gacha games.
As far as Japanese devs go, Nintendo and From Software produced a product and the audience found it. From Software has been making Souls style games since the 90s. Nintendo is Nintendo. If Square Enix went back to making their classic style products, it would probably do them better than chasing a wide audience with conflicting tastes. The Disney/Marvel model of all things to all people has really messed with media in a poor way. I think that Chinese devs are getting away with stuff cause they are simply remaking old ps2 style action games like the first God of War with a new coat of paint. It stands out next to the bad movies in disguise cover shooters of things like The Last of Us that get pumped out constantly by Western devs. Also it's hard to support Chinese devs cause you cant tell which are genuine and which are just spyware pushers like Genshin. Its really interesting to watch another culture do their own versions of essentially ps2 era action games on mobile devices and bigger budget versions on other platforms but i also dont need yet another government up in my business.
Exactly, the Japanese developers produced a product and the worldwide audience found it. These days, many developers are chasing the audience and falling flat. As for Black Myth, I agree there is little about the gameplay that is original. It looks like a solid combination of systems and mechanics from games that came before it. For this reason I don’t think it wins game of the year awards. FF7 Rebirth is more innovative and rich and deserving!
I know you've stated you're not playing anymore mobile games, but I'm curious if you have any thoughts on Heaven Burns Red. I've been playing it since JP release to practice my Japanese and I really love it. It's one that 100% is made for a JP market first, so it'll be interesting to see how it does when it releases in English sometime in the near future.
All I know about HBR is it is very successful and has a good reputation! It’s a recent bright spot in the Japanese mobile game world. I’m glad you’re enjoying it and it’ll be interesting to see if it catches on with Global users
Hi Cabbage, its been a long time since I watch your video, and this video pop up on my reccomendation (maybe because of wukong lol). It's good to hear your opinion about the japan gaming industry. I hope you make more content like this, so even though I'm not playing the same video game that you played, I can still enjoy your content and your thoughts about current video game industry / environment.
Now I’m wondering if Jp devs would do what Nier dev team did with Reincarnation. You know, they made it exclusive to mobile and call the players as the select group (club) 🤔 kind of like the inverse of Genshin model
Cool! Will news shows be regular? Have you looked into the Japanese MMOs sector? Apart from the evergreen 14 and age-old PSO2/NG, I heard Blue Protocol is shutting down and the global release accelated from stillborn to miscarriage... Apart from the gacha stuff, Blue Protocol is kinda similar to Genshin and the new crop of chinese 3D action gachas? Then there is Synduality going for a PvPvE extraction shooter style live service with chunky mechs, but I suspect it hasn't released yet _only_ because they have no confidence on a business model yet 😅.
I hope this will be regular! Depends if there is anything interesting to talk about. I heard about Blue Protocol shutting down but that’s about all I know about MMOs
Its sad to see SE trying to appease to the global market and the JP market at the same time and I agree with you about not wanting to play wukong too but not because of the gameplay more because I think it lacks strong art direction, making something mystical like journey to the west as some super detailed UE game is bizarre to me it should have been more stylized but the world is full of people who think realism is always the best option and if you dont do it its because you lack resources I dont blame the devs for going in that direction. SE in general really has been lacking a game that can save them and its hitting every part of their business as not even FF7 remake has been able to do it, at this point I am not sure even FF9 remake can do it even if hey actually keep it faithful to the original it might be that final fantasy really is not as popular a franchise as it was.
I am tempted to agree that FF is not as popular as it was, FF7 and FFX were the peaks. The FF7 Remake trilogy is their best opportunity now and it’s not performing. A FF9 remake would probably sell less than 7

Thank you, long time no see!

the first couple years of final fantasy brave exvius were great

I recently beat Wukong and it does not play like Oldschool god of war at ALL, Its more like a more casual version of sekiro if anything.

RIP gacha games. It was a good run.
Fascinating industry to watch!
