    MANOEUVRING IN THE MARINA
    Quick preview. Watch as Mahina and Nick leave their berth and navigate the tight confines of ACI Marina Palmižana in Croatia, onboard Mila Felice, 2019 Hanse 548. A single rudder sailing yacht.
    At the time of departure there was approximately 8 knots wind blowing from the port beam. Pushing the bow to starboard. Nick demonstrates the use of rudder and throttle control to manoeuvre out of the berth without using the onboard thrusters.
    This is raw footage only and it captures the true essence of the moment. Stay tuned for a follow-up video where Nick will provide a detailed narrative, explaining the precise movements of the rudder and throttle.

    Excellent demonstration showing a first-class pro (you) choosing to put stern into the wind and reverse with control and confidence. I would carry on reverse, until the boat was fully clear of the boats and pontons. But, that's me 😀, an amateur.

    it's crazy how tight the marinas are built / high long vessels they take there. I would have refused to go anywhere before other boats leave first :D

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks! Yeh it is a bit crazy. And yes good call to wait!
      20knots from astern … if I HAD to get out yes. But with lines to the windward yachts to manage the drift and not get pinned on the leeward boats. Would not have done it without help though.

  • @delta9775
    @delta9775 10 місяців тому +2

    Hey there. Out of curiosity, how would you do it if it was a very windy day? or would you wait for at least one of the boats to leave so you can have more space?

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  5 місяців тому

      If the wind was the same direction, up to 20 knots I would do it the same way. This was about 8 knots of wind. I would not wait as if its 20 knots its no likely the other yachts would leave! I may as well make the space for the others. The danger wind would be if it was on the bow as it would make the manoeuvre very challenging to stay of the boats once you made the first turn

  • @damihorv
    @damihorv Рік тому +1

    Is it beause of light breeze from port side you decided to turn right and go out astern? Or cause of propwash? Anyway, great job, but wish to learn why you did it such way, and not directly to the port side out? Great dockout by the way

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  11 місяців тому +1

      Thanks. Yes it was because it the breeze. Take the line to port would have been very tough to fight the bow against the wind. With stern to the wind the control is much greater

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  11 місяців тому

  • @philburtscher4375

    Going backwards always gives you more control when going slow or in tight spaces. If there is high wind that is always what I do so you don’t get blown around.

  • @sascha_sailing
    @sascha_sailing Рік тому +1

    Nicely done Nick!
    As the others already mentioned, very unnecessary to leave while you are manouvering, typical motorboat drivers ...
    One more question, is the propwalk in reverse on this boat "stern to port"?
    And 548 is a single rudder boat?
    Regards Sascha

      Lots and lots of Hanses here in the Netherlands (Dutch design - perhaps because that's the reason). As far as I know, all Hanses are 'single rudders'. Perhaps it's my lack of skills, but I don't like manoeuvring with a 'double rudder' yacht. That was the first thing we wanted to know when we chartered a yacht in Croatia 🙃

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  11 місяців тому

      Yes, standard right handed prop, port pull in reverse. And yes single rudder yacht.

    This is why I hate Palmižana.... It is beautiful place, but expensive as ... and tight as ... You handled it like a pro you are! My experience is - easy does it, but be careful of others. Right before I go out, I always check whole pear (and opposite one) if somebody else is leaving.... I had bad experience with others nearly ramming into me! Funny thing is, that even on there promotion video, you can see the chaos there is due to congestion each morning, when people start to leave.

    • @mennovanrij9334

      Try entering Zadar Marina on Friday afternoon; a 'dead-end' marina with concrete walls and piers with sharp edges. The fuel station is just outside and the queue is a few hours long(!) before the tank is filled up again. That causes stress when holding the boat in position for an hour or so. Everybody wants to get into the marina at the same time... We were early because we knew the situation and it's not worth getting caught in traffic. We refuelled earlier, at a different station. So we parked the boat ourselves. But later, when it got crowded, charter companies went outside with RIBs and company employees climbed aboard and took the helm when entering the port...

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  11 місяців тому

      Yep. Many of the marina's here in Croatia are a tight fit. And, like you said, it is imperative that you watch out for other boats around you. Because they are probably NOT watching out for you. Like the guy in the powerboat pulling out in front of us at 2:00 in the video 🤦🏼. Having crew to keep a lookout is such a huge help!

    Incredible, I watched it 5x in a row. Tell this landlubber why thrusters weren't used, surely such a hoss of a vessel has said equipment?

    • @45DegreesSailing
      @45DegreesSailing  11 місяців тому

      Haha, thank you. This yacht is one of my favourites. It has all the bells, whistles, and thrusters! Bow and stern thrusters, powerful and in perfect working order.
      The reason they were not used was simply to demonstrate that with the right plan, rudder positions and throttle use, you can manoeuvre precisely (to a point of course) without them. Knowing how to do this is so important. This way, when the conditions call for it you can use the thrusters as an addition and help to help move the yacht the right way efficiently. Very important to not be reliant on the thrusters.
