- Here is a cabride from a deadhead trip I took from Armstrong to Longlac aboard CN 5700 on train 102. We are passing through Exton, ON and then the short block towards Nakina, ON. The Nakina sawmill, town of Nakina, CN train Q10721 08 (CN 2306 + CN 2591), the former Pagwa Sub and NTR connection before turning South towards Longlac. The power for the 102 is the 5603 and the 5700. The cross is for a 1993 washout/derailment that claimed 2 lifes.
Back in the day employees would ride the VIA into Armstrong and take a freight home. This was common practice for years until our schedule and VIA Rails schedule changed.
Love the sound of those 75s throttling up!!!
love the throttle up at 2:30 !
A different perspective than the usual cab ride, and I like it alot! Thanks for sharing!
Having no stacks behind the cab made this video so much better, than if they were doubled.
Way better perspective
You captured some excellent sights and sounds of the railway, thanks for this video!
I keep comming back to this video. The sound, blowing snow. Great !! Sound wise right up-0 there with the Galaxie C5 A .
Amazing video. Love the power-up at 2:25 and horn.
2:25
I keep coming back to this, Chris...great vid.
I know I'll be watching this video more once! Very nice!!
I used to be a technician for CN Telecommunications. Back in the mid 70s, I was a relief tech, based in Capreol. In that position, I'd travel around much of Ontario region, relieving other techs who were on vacation or training. I often traveled over that section of track. When I was assigned to work in Geraldton, I'd drive to Nakina, Aroland, Longlac and Hillsport, as well as down to Beardmore and Jellicoe. If I was in Armstrong, I'd take a train, usually a freight, to Auden & Ferland. When in Hornepayne, I'd go to Oba and from Capreol, up to Foleyet. I also worked on the Kapuskasing and Pagwa subs, driving along highway 11 from Kapuskasing & Hearst to do my work. I also worked out of North Bay, Stratford and Guelph. Back then, I spent most of the year on the road.
EMD SD75i is KING KING KING! 710 best sounding diesel, love the 2-stroke sound yo! 3rd generation diesels are forever in my heart.
4th generation sounds like crap. I hope Trump continues to dismantle the EPA.
The worst is that EMD is now moving on to 4-stroke diesel from the EMD's strong held tradition of 2-stroke technology... New EMD's will all sound like GE's now, there will be NO variety anymore, it will all sound the same... (PS I didn't mind the SD70Ace sound as it is 4th generation locomotive)
SD75i's are they more like AC traction or DC? I'm just curious!!!
That's gotta be at least a 4800hp Locomotive is it?
Terrence Goodwin -DC 4200-4400hp
I love watching this video again and i remember my parents telling me about the washout that claimed 2 lives. I went to school with Mr Stolz 2 sons and played hockey with one of them
Yes sir very cool, always wanted to see that view. Thank you.
Thanks for sharing Chris! Can almost hear those first few stack cars groan at 2:28. Awesome stuff.
I'm basing my first model railroad on the Caramat Subdivision. This video has given me great ideas. Thanks Chris.
hey its my home town , Nakina. start of the video you go by the dormant nakina forest products sawmill. I was welding track between Armstrong and winnipeg at this time. On the Allan water sub and later the reddit sub. Cool how 101 sat in the hole while 102 whipped by. usually the opposite. I stopped this train at Collins once , due to my welder pullers not being able to release from the rail. I learned a lesson that day. Former Holland Welder.
I have no idea how old you are, but might you know a couple of guys named Bob Nelson or Pat Lacey? They were CN Telecommunications techs who worked in Nakina back in the 70s. Also, in my work I'd often stop freights. When I needed a ride, I'd get on the dispatchers phone and ask for a stop (usually a dead slow roll).
@@James_Knott sorry I don’t know them. I was born Oct 1981 so it was well before my time.
This video is severely underrated.
Can you do a video explaining how the trains get their designated alpha numerical titles ?
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing!
Best job I've ever had was repairing these Locomotives. Notch 8 sounds like a jet engine when load testing. Watching the engine jewels tick away in idle with the valve cover open is amazingly soothing after an engine rebuild on a GM. The GE engines are boaring in comparison and a pain in the ass.
Awesome video man
Very interesting video. This is the reallife stuff I like seeing. Nice work Chris. No bullshit in this video.....
great video. My dad worked on the section out of Nakina. I grew up there visiting my grandma. This is why I loved trains growing up. I spent many hours watching trains roll through Nakina when i was a kid (and I still do.. lol)
The derailment happened at Green Lake, mile 135.5 Caramat sub. A westbound freight hit a washout. Read the TSB report here www.tsb.gc.ca/eng/rapports-reports/rail/1992/r92t0183/r92t0183.asp
cn9558 I'm still in Nakina. Who is your dad if you don't mind me asking ?
I remember that derailment like it was yesterday.
one of the best video i saw :D in addition sd75i is my favorite locomotive so thanks you for this great video ! the next one is for soon ? ;)
I’m foaming just watching this video 🤣😂🤣😂
Back when engineering could ride freights to get between remote work locations.
This is as good as it gets ! Al Swhite
Good one Chris.
That was cool always wondered what it looked like up there
Try spending 2.5 years up there, as I did, and you'll know! 🙂
Very cool but I’ll take an SD40-2 any day.lol
Man I miss this. That was my subdivision
How long does it take to get used to looking backwards at speed?
Love it!
I take it the cabs are not soundproofed?
any videos from the Allan water or Reddit with the repair gangs in them. maybe a Holland on a siding? Love your videos Chris.
Those are in the Prairie region and Nakina is in Ontario region and track gangs generally didn't work in other regions. Armstrong is the division point between them. BTW, Allanwater is one word, not two.
@@James_Knott thanks
screamin'!!!!
Nice
Is that the place named Dunrankin, ON where the cross with the CN logo show on your right? If yes, then I remember that there was a big derailment with the passenger train.
no this is between Nakina and Exton were we lost 2 employees very sad day
but you are right about what happened at Dunrankin
Very nice! What was the cross with the CN emblem under it doing there?
I believe it was where the 1993 washout was that took 2 lives
@@railroadtie69 Actually July '92.
Like a 747
What is the sign at 2:14 just before the cross for?
A memorial.

Love it!
