2005 Subaru Forester XT Moonroof Jammed Fix

  • My moonroof had been broken since I bought it used. It would close fine, but only one corner would drop and so it would get jammed when trying to open. After some digging I found that one of the pullers for the moonroof had broken. I fixed this with a needle to drill the holes, a paperclip and some super glue, and it appears to be working.
    The moonroof comes off by pulling some plastic caps off, and then with 8 10mm bolts. the whole job could be done in under 30 min with no need to remove the headliner.
    I hope this video makes any sense. Let me know if not, I may have to redo it.

    The idea of the fix is good, but there is a better and more durable way. We tried your method today on 2 foresters with same problem, after doing paperclip method by drilling very small holes on the side of the plastic worked only for 1-2 retractions, and same problem occours again because everything breaks apart. The better solution is to remove little metal stopers which are screwd in the metal railing by 2 philips bolts. Remove them on the both sides and push the roof close button till you see these plastic sliders, then push roof close button few times to slide the metal part a little bit back and install the metal clip from the top. The plastic there is way more thicker and will hold for much longer. Did it on both foresters, tried multiple times to open and close the roof - works like new without any problems.
    Take your time to clean old grease and dirt from the railings, clean everything around and put some grease in it. Before install sunroof back on, move the mechanism with your hand and with the open-close button several times with the new grease.

      Great tips! Got to say that my fix is still going strong for me, but I'm sure there are a ton of factors that go into it. Anything that seems stronger is a good idea for sure :)

    Thx. Nice CAD work. Mine stopped closing all the way. And the cover no longer moves independently. Think I will get an estimate text from the dealer, first. I hate plastic clips and parts. Easy to break. Especially after they have gotten old and brittle. Like me. And it can be a bitch to find the parts.

    Good video. Try tie-wire instead of a paper clip.

    I'm assuming im having the same problem as this, as there is a slight delay in the pull back of the passenger side of the sunroof causing it to get jammed when lowering. How were you able to fix the piece well it was all in place? I can barely even see the plastic tray that hopefully is what broke and I have the full sunroof tray sitting on a table outside of my car. Did you remove the black arm along with the black plate the sunroof sat on, is that even possible?
    Thanks for the model, and the video its really well done!

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  3 роки тому +1

      I was JUST able to see enough of the plastic to drill through it. i left the black arm in, i was able to just flip it up and out of the way. it was a bit of a precise activity though. I used a needle to to make a pilot hole, then a small drill bit and was able to with my fingers twist it to drill through the plastic because the plastic is so weak. a small drill may help though. then I just drilled the two holes, bent a paperclip to the right shape, covered the paperclip in superglue and inserted it.

      @@pumpisland I'm impressed you were able to work in such a small gap, I could barely even see the plastic tray. I ended up picking a whole new sunroof tray and motor from a picknpull and swapped it in. Works great so far.

      @@Mabcde556 Im impressed you were able to do that! I'm not mechanically inclined enough to pull that off! Tech, and small things are more my style. :P

      @@pumpisland your way was definitely cheaper. My way ended up costing me 95$ for the assembly. Which is still tremendously better then the $800 or so the Subaru wants.

    Did you have to remove the headliner to do this? I can’t even see where these parts are in order to do this Jerry rig

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  3 роки тому

      nope! no headliner removal is needed! very minimal disassembly is required. from the inside with the sunroof closed, you should be able to see on the 4 corners a plastic cover, these just pop off. then under that there will be 2 10mm nuts per corner, undo those. then the whole glass should be able to lift up and out, there are 'washer' type metal things between the glass and the mounting point, keep track of these and how many there are at each corner (I think I had 4).
      ua-cam.com/video/-Qe45zbO3-0/v-deo.html
      that video at the end shows most of that process in reverse.
      hope that helps!

    The issue with mines seems to be that the sled has disintegrated into tiny shards of plastic not sure what to do

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  Рік тому +1

      Yea thats quite unfortunate! It really is a horrible plastic they make them out of. Like I mentioned, anything you can do you get the little puller/sled to catch back onto the other sled should do the trick. But posability is definetly down to how much plastic you have left to mount things too. It may be the case that you just need a whole new partin which case its a bigger job. It would be worth starring at for a while to see if a solution comes to you. Also check out some of the other replies there are some other good options here. Best of luck!

    I have a 2002 subaru forester s and the sun roof on the passenger rear side is dropped down and it won't move with the glass but without the glass it moves any tips there

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  2 роки тому

      Yes, this sounds to be the same issue I was experiencing. The reason it does not jam without the glass appears to be because of the reduced weight on the sled in the mechanism.
      The solution given in this video should solve your issue :)

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  2 роки тому

      Unfortunately its really not a photogenic spot. Its a really tricky angle to get a picture of even with the glass out and would not look like much. The sunroof is put all back together now, but I like to think the 3D model is a pretty good depiction. Just imagine that model covered in superglue :P

    Could you hear the cable moving before this fix? Ive got the same issue of the sunroof not opening, but all I hear when I press the retract/open button is a click from the back of the roof (the sunroof motor?). I dont hear any movement from around the sunroof itself which makes me doubt its a snapped part.

    • @pumpisland
      @pumpisland  4 роки тому

      yea, the sunroof would lower on one corner and try to retract but get jammed. so i knew my motor was good, and one side connected to the cable. but after it got jammed there was no more noise. hope that helps. good luck!
