The pose with the arms "straight out" pose for Arnold is called the Praying Mantis.
Oh nice that's a dope name I like it!
wilfredo rodriguez or just mantis....
Or mantis pose
@@Tomn8er not praying mantis. It's called mantis pose
Wow makes me have goosebumps still
Like wow😱 every time 🌍🏅💯🙏🏼
The zoomed in picture of zane’s vacuum is the greatest bodybuilding picture taken of all time
except maybe pictures of Larry Scott or Sergio Oliva. just the two guys.
Meh. Way overrated. He's way to small
Victory pose by Oliva :P
@@martindevon3204 he still nuked most everyone on stage lol
In my opinion, Jays quad stomp is the greatest bodybuilding picture ever taken
What's crazy about samir bannout is that his lower back had that tree look. And the flag of lebanon, which is where he is from, has the cedar tree in the middle. Crazy that the lebanese guy has the best 'tree' look of the lower back and at the same time the cedar tree is a symbol of his country.
i'm pretty sure this tree detail is obvious only to the fans from Lebanon.
@@Piotrus31492 maybe that's why he decided to share it
Haha good point!
They even added a Christmas tree to the flag of Lebanon after seeing Samir Bannout
generaaljozo hahah haha
Arnold in my eyes is one of the best posers of all time. Just the way he was able to hit poses and twist his body in ways that would only show his strengths. The way he'd take certain poses and elevate them to a level they hadn't been before, and haven't been since. The man was able to make himself look like a Greek God carved from stone. I can only imagine the hours of dedication in front of a mirror that took. He was an artist with his posing.
The only other bodybuilder that I can think of who had that same talent, was Frank Zane.
BEST POSERS OF ALL TIME IS MOHAMED MAKKAWY AND FRANCIS BENFATTO
Bob Paris still has the most artistic posing routines of all time. And there have been plenty of others with incredible posing qualities as well, like Labrada, Makkawy, Benfatto, etc.
the best poser is lee labrada
7:07 - “when bodybuilding was still an art form and not just a freak show”. Yep, that's the whole problem of modern bodybuilding condensed into one sentence. Kudos!
It's the judges fault
Phil Heaths side bubble gut bonanza?
Yeah, exactly, where is that one in this video, Tom?! ICONIC!!!
You young cats always going on about Phil Heath... you forget Ronnie did it bigger and better than Phil ever has :P
Tomn8er I'm meaning the weird 2 arm pose he does after side chest
AHAHAHHAHAHAHAA!!
@@Tomn8er that's the perfect reply 🔥
Not putting arnold for the twisted back double biceps is unforgivable... Smh
Well like I said I think Levrone did it better and prefer Arnold's straight arm pose. Can't have him for every pose lol
Santi Anzo I think Levrone did it better.
@@Tomn8er I think twisted back double biceps is Arnold's pose cause there is a trophy of that pose in arnold classic
Plus you should have add Arnold's back single bicep pose
Arnold overated
@@kayledarius4965 lol 😂
Sergio's Victory Pose tops the lot simply because its unmatched.Lee Priest did have great forearms and arms but didnt have the wide shoulders and huge lats to pull it off sorry.
I think the 1972 version of the pose is just as good as the famous 1980 one.And yes Sergio did have long humerus, his arms were relatively long for his frame but that coupled with his forearm/ arm mass gives him a raw power look
Arnolds twisting back double biceps is amazing too.
Totally disagree Lee priest is by far the best at the crucifix and inverted crucifix.
lee had a very weak chest that went flat when he raised his arms + small lats
zero v taper, and due to his super long torso and short limbs didnt flow at all
totally agree about Sergio. there is no bodybuilder who topped his victory pose. take Sergio's silhouette and there is absolutely no doubt who it is. it cannot be said about any other bodybuilder.
@@Piotrus31492 Its incredibly hard to pull it off.Because its the kind of pose that "invites" the audience/judges to look for flaws...if yuo have any weakness in this shot it will show up...
I also always liked the rear version of his victory pose

And tbh my favourite Sergio pose is this
www.ambal.ru/man.php?m=79&im=105382
ive seen 2 even better, one taken by Arthur Jones in 71 and another one from early 80s...
Thank you. Someone who knows what he looks for and doesn’t just look at the arms in that pose.
Lee Priest victory is missing. Also Dorian Yates modified front lat spread where he raised one leg on toes to show the calf
LISTEN TO WHAT HE SAID IN THE BEGINNING OF THE VIDEO
@4:00 Why does the vein on Platz’ left leg directly continue on his right leg?
I genuinely thought exactly the same thing
Fate
Are you just trying to make everyone look at Tom platz ass again?
Yeah i was thinking about that it looks weird
3:50 looks like the vains from the one leg go over to the other lol
I've been watching your videos recently and truly I love the way you highlight the graciousness that old school bodybuilders brought especially Serge Nubret and Sergio "The Myth" Oliva. Frankly speaking they are my favourite and serge has an upper hand over sergio in my eyes.Sadly, his contribution is overlooked but the way you highlight him is lovely and thanks for doing so
Absolutely fantastic video! Great work. 💪
You had to show Paul dillet doing the crucifix pose , he is the best at it
george mavrov Agree. Paul might not have been able to hit a vacuum while doing the crucifix like Mentzer, but Paul’s crucifix was on a whole other level given the length and size of his upper arms and forearms, along with his wide lats, and aesthetic waistline (for a mass monster).
Great video. Bob Paris’ posing has to be my favorite. There is one pose of his, standing facing front, with one arm on his hip and the other either flexed or straight, it has to be the most aesthetic shot I’ve seen.
Man you really deserve a lot more subscribers!
Really enjoyed the commentary bro keep it up!
Excellent video. These guys are surely the masters.
That single-bicep-hand-on-hip beach shot of Sergio is awesome as well
Sergio's is the best of all time, glad you said it
I was about to go nuts because I hadn't seen Sergio yet and then BANG there he was!
This guy deserves a lot more subs. It's like watching short bb documentaries. Very well done and good choice of photos. Great stuff.
thx man you are too kind :)
Tomn8er My pleasure. I think that the Zane pose with the arms over head was called the Scorpion pose.
Serge Nubret has some variety of iconic poses.
This video will help me so much in my next competition. I know it's old but thank you very much for this post. You have no idea
The praying mantis at 3:44 has been significantly altered. Look at his lower lat, hamstring and camera right quad sweep.
true
Good video and great commentary.
I just recently stumbled on your channel & binged watch all your vids ever since, i sub!
thanks glad you enjoyed
Good vid. Got me hyped. Ty
Boom bro, amazing video u almost covered all the legends💗
Awesome vid. Sergio was truly “The Myth”.
Retromotive Garage Yes indeed
Good idea and vid Tom.
WOW. how did you miss the 1993 Arnold classic twisting kneeling back double bicep of the amazing flex wheeler! ( the most iconic pose of all time )
Nice! I searching this Zane arms overhead pose and i found it in your video 😊
Same. Unfortunately I still don't know what it's called, lol.
great respect for saving Sergio Oliva for last. there has never been anyone like Sergio Oliva. his poses are recognizable from merely silhouettes. no other bodybuilder can boast this feat.
The crucifix pose was OWNED and fits the best on Paul Dillet
your comments about Sergio Oliva fully support my reactions. the "myth" nickname came for a good reason. this pose (and this photo) are truly legendary.
love the ending photo - Sergio holding 2 massive anacondas in his hands :-D
Quad stomp is legend 🔥
The pose you were talking about with Arnold’s arms is called the mantis
This was great💪🏿💪🏿
6:34 the crown holding pose
Great channel champ
Thanks
Never say Shawn Ray in that pic
I met him in person at a gym in Poughkeepsie New York. wasn't in shape actually but when he is ready he's one of the most underrated of all time
Arnolds mantis is the best ever! No one else has shown the same pec and arm combo ever.
10:54.
Holy shit..
Real mass monster.. It's unbelievable version of Jay Cutler
mohamed makkawy had a couple if stellar signature poses
Great list.
Yes I enjoyed it and that was a good video dude
kudos for including Larry Scott.
I like Arnold's archer pose and also Phil Heath's Dragon Ball Z Frieza pose.
What is that Phil pose
I think sergio oliva deserves the crucifix pose over mentzer. I’m also a big of an oliva fan boy though. Great vid all around
Edit: glad sergio got his well deserved shoutout. His arms were just wild. It’s so impressive how full they look despite being so long
Today I was practicing posing and I realised that the victory pose needs one to lift the arms a little bit even if it seems that you will loose width.it looks more aesthetically pleasing that way. That's why The victory pose looks better on sergio oliva that lee priest because of the long arms.
Robby Robinson's front double biceps whit 70's afro it's an iconic bodybuiding posing of all times either.
the mantis pose is by far the best, it just looks insane.
On the Zane vacuum pose, I remember reading "Zane practically owns this pose".
Arnold's posing routine is one of the best. One needs to have immense flexibility for such poses.
Mike Mentzer had an exceptional Mantis pose too
Great work, but one more pose by Frank Zane; when his arms were overhead with hands open ,( similiar to Labrada), but stairs wide eyed into space, loud pink Floyd music, good video
They all had stand out calf development, Arnold, Zane, Platz, Olivier.....
Great stuff .....
I enjoyed that 👍
Tom Plats 1st pic of the Moon pose looks like a CAMELTOE STRETCHED G.STRING on Steelroids 😂🤣😂🤣 Lee LaBradas "COBRA POSE" 1 of the best pose ever.
0:00 The name of this pose is *pass the chicken breast my nigga*
Lee should have made the list with his victory pose, but he's definitely on my personal favorites
3:41 is that 'shopped. Looks it. Otherwise just insane size and shape.
Yeah you're right. After reviewing the 1980 contest it's clear as day to me it is shopped. The lats alone are totally warped and Arnold never had triceps like that! Not sure how I didn't catch it then but guess I was accustomed to seeing all these humungous modern day bb's like Roelly and Heath and lost a bit of perspective. Thx
Good video m9
ROFL
Arnold knew how to make his arms look huge. In his Encyclopedia of Bodybuilding where he's showing his arms nearly crossed in front of him, and he said "I do this to show the judges just how big my biceps, triceps and forearms really are" and they look huge.
Lost my magazines. But the guy Arnold got it from was doing it to highlight his forearms, with his hands like a Praying Mantis as someone mentioned. Arnold decided to use it to highlight his biceps and triceps as well.
Makes sense!
Larry Scott's pose.
Best commentator bar none
What's the name of that first pose in the very beginning of the video
At 3:36 is my favorite human body of all time, exactly this image says it all! You can't beat this, EVER!!!!!!!! Masculin perfection !
"Arms up pose" is called the victory pose
"Arms out pose" is the mantis pose
Does somebody know from which competition is that amazing Sergio's Victory pose (first on, in black-white)?
DoC Sumann World Championships - WABBA, Professional-1980
Great video, Tom and an excellent choice of topic, I really enjoyed this one! :)
These poses are/were so much more interesting than all those boring mandatories and also gave a lot of personality and recognizing factor to many of these bodybuilders. I kinda miss Dorian's bicep-quads-calves pose, it was quite signature of him showcasing those dominating calves on every opportunity he had.
Other than this, a near perfect list. The only real thing made me sad about it was that you've not included Heath's legendary "loose gut" pose. He does that like very few others, Kai Greene came close in his prime, and also Ronnie did a version of it before, but that's that. ;)
Oh I think you mean the "reverse vacuum" - unfortunately it's becoming all too common and not quite unique enough to make the cut. And I know the one you're talking about with Dorian. It's true his calf does look terrific but his arms are rather lacklustre for such a pose, plus many other bodybuilders have done it and I don't feel Yates' rendition was good enough to separate him from the pack.
Tomn8er
I think Samir's pose where he is extending one of his legs and the other one is half way down and his arms are doing a hybrid of a front bicep/crucifix should have made the cut.
And forgive my syntax English is my second language.
Oh right that is a good catch! Samir could've been featured twice
Dominic dominic I did not, on the contrary: that made that pose special. I believe Dorian was probably one of the greatest posers of all time in terms of looking bigger, hiding faults and making a different, rather fake impression of himself in the eye of the observer. Like the way he held his triceps to his lats to make the impression of a bigger tricep in the side tri pose, or in that case: emphasise the huge quads and incredible calves just to make the judges forget that even his better arm looked like shit.
I don't like the fact that he was able to dominate with so many injured or lacking bodyparts. But I greatly admire his effort nevertheless.
I prefer the classic body builder era too. Speaking of classic body builders, shout out to the great Leo Caminotto!!!
what do you call larry's pose at 9:25? I just came up with it this morning and Im pissed off he's already done that :D
Frank zane it's like statue, what a pose
paul dillets crucifix is amazing
Gorillas, rhinos and hippos of today! Literally fell off my chair laughing.
3:20 I believe it is called the praying mantis pose or something
You missed the Mike Christian "double quad." Platz couldn't' stand next to him when he hit this iconic masterpiece.
When I saw jays leg for the first Time I thought his thigh is going to tear apart
The charisma of posing
Good video. You should've had Lee hitting the victory pose. I know you gave it to *Sergio(my apologies), but some of Lee's pics are just insane.
If Sergio didn't exist Lee would've been on here for sure! Arms-wise Lee beats him but in terms of the overall body gotta give it to Oliva all day. The victory pose was his pose, Priest just borrowed it :P
Tomn8er Touché. Thanks for replying. I look forward to watching your next video.
Lee's chest was almost flat when he hit that pose
can someone tell me the name of the pose at 9:50? It's actually my favourite and i would really want to know it
Paul dillet crucifex pose one of the best
Sergio Oliva the back even better
www.joeweider.com/2018/wp-content/uploads/2012/06/68oliva_back.jpg
4:25 this is the goat (according to philion) :)
The pose which Kevin Levrone pulled out is named as " 3/4 pose "
agree about arnold rear twistin read double biceps....but you cant keep showing "the oak" too much :)
Paul dillet crusofix and lee priest might be included as well
What is the pose called at ~9:50? Or does it not have a name
I think you should have included the javelin pose
Are you referring to the one Arnold do with front arm straight up-forward? I thought its called "archer pose", because the archers hold the backward arm flexed and the front arm straight.
The arms over head is called the victory pose
The pose you're referring to done by Arnold and Larry Scott is called the Goose Neck or the Praying Mantis Pose...
Bro the cobra pose is for lee priest
3:39 best body in human history.
DFS54 No it's not.
Flex has the best body by faar
@DFS54 it's from 1975 Mr Olympia.
@@kryptonianstrength8461 synthol...
Wow no matter who else hits a arm pose this one at 3.37 is insane by Arnold and he has that stand of the arm even though his arms arm out stretched nearly I’ve always practiced this one and it’s so hard to rate yourself self when this is the bar
Arnold is number one xxx
You forgot to include the iconic crucifix pose by Paul Dillet. That's one of the greatest poses of all time. It amazes me that you didn't include that. It's unforgivable.
Mentzer did it many years earlier though that's why Dillet wasn't featured
@@Tomn8er and he held it for such a short time that even Flash barely noticed lol :D
Arnold pose is another version of a side tricep
