Probably a lot of factors, but the bigger one is how newer generations grow up with a bombardment of negative content on their feeds and we're more online than ever, whereas for us older furs, things like TikTok didn't even exist when we started. Negativity bias unfortunately tends to win out (for very silly reasons that date back to primitive times) and that gets people to click. That's not to say those topics shouldn't be discussed, but negativity bias tends to win a lot more these days and as such, that content often gets pushed to the top of suggestions. I don't think it's exclusive to the furry fandom either. Niche online spaces are exploding in growth thanks to a surge in social media usage during the height of the pandemic.
In any case, it's not healthy to constantly consume this type of content, same thing can be said about toxic positivity. We should be aware of the bigger problems, but not let that type of content consume us either.

@@StormiFolf I agree with you fully. IDK what happened to the wholesome content the fandom is famous for here on UA-cam that’s dying. I know you seem to keep the tradition of positivity in your content and that’s what I like you for. And yeah there is a quote I like to mention out of a song by a Croatian band called Baby Lasagna: “don’t hate yourself but don’t love yourself too much”. Which is an unwritten rule of life.

Remember when furry drama was literally just people yelling about furry drama? Now it's actual drama. I almost miss the old days where the worst drama was literally just two people who didn't like each other and everyone telling them to shut the hell up.

@@BruzoDragonius Yeah.. there's a reason I've been expanding into Furry Twitch. A lot of old faces there I used to see on furry youtube. They left a while ago. So many of us are burned out from overworking ourselves getting out quality content, staying above all the drama bait noise. I'm not leaving Furry UA-cam, but my content will be switching over to deep dive topics going forward.

A lot of problems have been unaddressed within the fandom. One of those being on the outside, toxic positivity(yes you did mention it in this video) is easy to spot, but the person actually committing it tends to miss the underlying reasons why their behavior is bad, so they continue to do it. This replicates general society's super culture within our subculture. So a positive interactions with one person can be highly negative for another. Another is that when events like kero came around, it broke a lot of people's trust on who can actually do the go lucky happy vibes without having a dark motive (this include breaking creator's social circles). And that sort of dynamic has continued on to the point where it's assumed a popular person will do something bad. Call outs are a mechanism to stay away from danger so that would be a higher priority. Imagination is a tool that helps you avoid danger by creating scenarios in which to train. It's understandable that watch a more positive leaning video will have less info to offer than a negative video that can show the pitfalls to avoid. The problem is not the negativity itself but that people require the tools to solve and detect issues in a meaningful way which allow for a more trustworthy, relaxed, and explorative space. Solve those issues, and silly videos become a higher priority. Also algorithms push more negative content for it's an effective tool to keep people on the platform so skewing negative also means algorithms think it's more viable. But word of mouth is still word of mouth so that type of communication needs to be prioritized for creators, which Twitch social circles seem to be doing well especially with tools like teams.

I know exactly what you're talking about, and I think you're right to pin it on the pandemic, at least in part. A lot of people I know are STILL recovering from the effects of 2020-2022, and I think that 'negative energy' so to speak carried over longer than people realize. I know I was not the only one who had serious psychological struggles during that period, and I know that can manifest itself in what we make and how we behave, sometimes without us even realizing it. I'm not sure what the 'fix' is, but I do know I have felt the energy shifting. Several of my friends have also noted to me that they feel the 'golden age of furry' energy (which seems to refer to the same period you referred to) coming back, and I agree. I think people really just needed time to heal from all the damage of 2020-2022.

Hey there, chroniclly online furry here; allow me to put my own spin & thoughts on this.
I have been fully invested with the fandom for over 10 years, but I first fully realized what the fandom was around 2008 so I didnt really get involved at it weirded me out at the time. But when i fight joind and saw the likes of Telephone with her video of the fursuit trying to force a dollar bill into the dono bucket I just couldnt help but let out a belly laugh, the kind that leaves your sides aching and you out of breath for a few seconds. That's what started me falling in love with the fandom was how incredibly perfomative & expressive these suits could be! I mean back then magnetic eyelids and other accessories/bonuses were extremely rare so these people HAD to be over dramamtic.
But then COVID happened, but that was just the first domino. I still remember the rage and anger I felt when I saw the infamous "_sadists leaks" I was livid! I throughly looked up to Kero and seeing that this whole time he was a disgusting monster made me start to loose faith in the fandom. And then it JUST KEPT GETTING WORSE! It was call out after god damned call out! DHC, Blue [though that wasn't her fault it was just Twitter bein cucks again], Sappho [Just....not even going to get into her], Coyote Lovely, Zcarlo, Following Every Furry VS JT Wusky [this one was just slop], LKothorix VS Genesuis Wolf, The Peacewolf Divorce, Spoktor, Glitch, Neffertity, Everywhere I looked after Kero enraged me and by the time Neff's situation rolled around I threw my hands up and was completely fed up and done with the fandom. I couldn't take the constant call outs; especially from creators I looked up to, though most of the ones mentioned I only knew from their callouts.
But then the post COVID political wars happened, once the Geroge Floyyd thing happened it all came collapsing down in a blink! First it was Roe V Wade and then it was litterboxes & furries/therians, and then it was trans people. I am still extremely pessimistic after everything I even got off of twitter & kept my other furry following to just 5 people + the 2 who I became mutes with and we started becoming friends. But, still having even befriended some gross & evil people within the fandom in the past I was still hesitant to get close to these strangers. That was until they both came crying to me about how fed up they were with the state of the world and they needed someone to vent to. 1 audio call and several hours later we're now good friends because we understood all too well just how bad things SUCKEd and still do! Plus it's only getting worse!
So in short its a combination of things; grey muzzles getting frustrated and fed up with the fandom & leaving no longer wanting to associate with the "dumpster fire" that it's become, COVID giving people too much free time on their hands making the internet an open book that can no longer close because those same people used all their free time to learn & abuse the system, and political ideologies becoming a heavy & violent war that was just as agonizing online as it was irl. Its now us VS the evangelical conservatives/extremists and many people just arent safe and it tears me and many others apart.
So that's what I think happened the ticking timebomb that was the global super power collapsing and the people being online for too long because it finally burst. And trust me Im just as angry and upset about it as you, I wanted this but had I known it'd be this dangerous I just wished I had remained blissfully unaware like I was as a kid.

Maybe it’s because I’ve only been watching furry videos for a few months now, but I’ve hardly seen any negative content so far. Most of the the content that I have seen so far mainly consists of fursuit skits (mainly those by Nashoba Azul and Max Borkowski), short animations (especially those by Blackie Sootfur and Generic Purple Protogen), general discussions about the fandom itself (E.G. Solarsaber), and also some of Little Alpha Pup’s inspirational videos. I guess my point being that, even with this rise in popularity for more drama-fueled content, I am still finding no shortage in the more positive content, which I guess is a testament to how positive this fandom truly is, and honestly, let’s try to keep it that way for years to come.

  • @thefunnyanimalsshow

It’s the algorithm all the way. Every time I start watching furry stuff on youtube I get through about 3 videos before the ‘horror stories of the fandom’ start popping out out of random, and it’s always the same utterly miserable anonymous mouthbreather going on and on about some specific individual or making utterly anti-fandom statements like telling people to see a doctor if they’re attracted to animals. Literally what are you doing in this fandom if you aren’t ‘attracted to animals,’ why make your character an animal? I really thought for a second the fandom had grown up and understood that these people tend to be huge hypocrites covering up their own bullshit and generating drama as a cover and diversion to their own shame. But youtube wants to keep furry stuff down and pin it as part of the lgbtq community to be suppressed, so that’s what the algorithm promotes while everyone else just trying to create their own stuff and do actual furry content is essentially removed from existing. I am just about ready to start posting on e621 instead.

Here's is my theory; Post COVID Trauma where we were forced to watch the world (literally) burn. In that time, people were just consumed by the rage and anger of the world. In that time, the algorithm noticed that rage baiting content was doing well, so now content creators have convinced people that the way to be is to be negative about EVERYTHING; the many videos that review a movie that is just mid be called "THE WORST MOVIE EVAH MADE!!!!". And you know what they say, monkey see monkey do. So they just repeat the mindset and repeat the cycle.
Also furries need to learn that not everything has to be about rage baiting commentary videos, that if you truly enjoy something, and people are happy, that shouldn't be a call to arms to yell "TOXIC POSITIVITY!!"

  • @fadedhyena

I like creators that have a mixed bag of content honestly. I want to know who you are, your thoughts, what makes you happy, things you want to talk about or unpack - not just stare at a fursuit bouncing around, void of anything deeper. I feel líke the tiktok compilation accounts take care of that for the most part. If people don't feel like giving a ton of positive content, they shouldn't be made to feel shame or lesser imo.
Like, hear me out, it kind of makes me reminisce on the poodling debate. Fursuiters or creators shouldn't be expected to hold themselves back and tailor their work to you/the fandom just because it might be perceived as the fandom being negative - much like fursuiters shouldn't have to risk heat stroke to avoiding "ruining the magic" as they don't need to exist solely for the consumption and entertainment of the public

Kids love negativity. It makes them feel like adults to engage with negative subject matter. And they have the most time to watch youtube, so it gears the algorithm towards negativity. It's also a bang on effect that, unfortunately, people outside the fandom don't feel like they can engage with the positive aspects of the fandom. You know what they can engage with? When the fandom makes a freak show of itself, when we haul out our worst actors and shame them publicly, that's when "the normies' can point and laugh and go "oh man, furries, what is their problem! Why can't they be normal?!" which gets a bigger share of clicks and rewards creators to make those sorts of videos to compete in this algorithmic market.

I think it’s the politics of today is what causing negativity and the woke call-outs that are draining all this positivity out of UA-cam. And it’s also down to the influence of even non furry content creators we sometimes watch that are mostly political based like Issac Butterfield because UA-camrs in general can’t just pull ideas with a click of a finger. And that too would influence the furry UA-camrs in creating furry news content that is usually full of drama. Now like you, I want to focus on positive content like those furries enjoying various furry conventions but I want to be more relevant to my viewers. Because that is what people want. I mean there are those like Artemis Wishfoot that are mainly tell about things the way they are without going overly woke even though he’s more of a political left leaning creator. Most furries are including me and there is nothing bad about it. But you know Lurks, I know what you mean that we should watch more positive videos like fursuit dancing or if it’s educational content or even con videos.

Mostly watch Thabo, Stormi, Nos and other positive furries. The world is a dark place right now, and I'm very aware of how it looks out there. Being autistic it's so easy getting caught up and just go down a black hole until I can't get out again. So need the positive. I became a furry to get away and just be silly for a while so I can cope with the crap going on

Atifurs pumping out more and more disingenuous videos claiming the community is basically synonymous with the worst of fur affinity isn’t helping much.😒

Drama makes money. Even outside of the furry fandom, drama channels have always gotten popular. The UA-cam algorithm is your master. It wants you to make more drama. That's it. That's the environment.

You didn’t mention a lot of negative UA-camrs are doing call outs on people like diezel whom is openly racist anti trans rhetoric.
And. As I have said- if you’re making videos for views and you worry 24/7 about views- maybe it’s time to reassess that.
I’m homeless. I’ve attempted things out here to make the pain go away. Where’s that story? No one cares. I do positive vids.

I was going to mention that some callout content is legit. I may have forgotten to say that in the take I ended up using. Sincerely hoping your situation improves, and I do love your positive content!

I agree with most of what you have to say, but "Watch positive content! If you don't like it, watch it on mute!" I'm sorry, but that sounds kind of toxic in itself.
That's a polite way of saying: "You don't want to watch this stuff!? Watch it anyway! Give us views!"

What I meant is if you like a content creator and want to support them, but aren't interested in a particular video, you can let it run through on mute. That gives them watch time and helps their channel overall.

I’v noticed a change. I think it has something to do with how fast this fandom is growing. That is great on the one hand butt at the same time it can be bad as well. With growth you’re going to run into more folks who have a tendency to lean towards drama and negativity. I don’t know, it is something that i’v noticed.
