  • Rare match from the original Japanese UWF from 1984. "Dirty" Dutch Mantell vs Akira Maeda.
Dutch talked about this match on facebook. "OK guys...this is the match I was talking about in my book. This was my first night in Japan...after almost a 20 hour day. I left Nashville headed to Los Angeles and then direct from LA to Tokyo."
Maeda stiffed Dutch in the match. Watch until the end of the match to find out more!
Purchase Dutch's book "The World According to Dutch" from Amazon or any other good retailer.

Thanks James Romero for suggesting this! What a scrappy fella. A jobber that could wrestle! Obv communication is an issue here and Dutch took it right on the chin like a man 💪🏻

Dutch was an agile dude. I always assumed he was a tough dirty brawler but he's pretty light when he wanted to be.

supposedly dutch didn't really know how the UWF worked back then, he thought he was going in to another promo similar to AJPW / NJPW. The UWF was a totally different ball game, they wanted to portrait it as a shoot. If you looked at some of the other matches, guys took kicks in the face, stiff forearms, slaps etc.. It wasn't uncommon. That being said, i thought dutch did a really good job with this match, almost everything he did looked pretty stiff and "real"

It's interesting that the debut show of a Japanese promotion had an American referee working its main event.

Mantell was booked to lose in this match so the only complain he has is the way Maeda used illegal TKD kick to knock him out. Maeda is an ethnic Korean who joined New Japan ProWrestling to escape jail time at 18. (Osaka municipal Police had warrant for his arrest on assault charge) He got fired by NJ ProWrestling for kicking another wrestler with unpredictable/illegal kick from behind to the face to break eye bones.

After hearing about this on Dutch's podcast I expected it to be a devastating kick. It didn't look too bad. Dutch wasn't knocked out either. His legs did not buckle when Maeda picked him up for the back suplex after the kick. Dutch was understandably exhausted from such a long travel day. He just wanted to go to sleep which he did for moment there on the mat.

Mantell and Maeda having this style of match in a pure-MMA-influenced promotion really kinda exposes how unrealistic the Memphis-brawling style was, huh?

    • @michaelromandel9022

MMA did not exist. This was the closest thing to it probably at the time as worked matches that looked worked but also looked reality based

@@michaelromandel9022 Muhammed Ali vs Antonio Inoki happened in 1976 and Gene Lebell vs Milo Savage happened in 1963. I definitely think that MMA existed before this.
Even if "MMA" wasn't a labeled thing, the popularity and difference in intensity between boxing and wrestling still was very obvious.

Didn’t mean crap to the live crowd. Since it was never on US soil don’t know why it was “won”at MSG. For the mags I guess.

Maede looked like he was excited to wrestle Dutch, I mean he knew he was going to beat him of course, but he looked like he just couldn't wait to get going on him as he was standing in his corner before the match started, like he was anticipating how much pleasure he was going to get from punishing and humiliating him, almost as if he got off on it...thinking about all the things he wanted to do to Mantell when the bell rang....and man did he ever have some fun...I wouldn't be surprised if he left the ring after the match with a satisfying load of man-spunk in his trunks...
