As a 3.0 fan, I regret never seeing peak Phish, but also, damn I'm glad i never had to witness trey unable to hit even the simplest series of notes 😢 Page is a hero for trying to carry him through
page's improv in the wrong key during curtain is a perfect example of his amazing musicianship. you can hear him quietly testing the note before playing his part since he knew the key was wrong. I'm glad they're healthy and in top form 18 years later.
Trey really had a problem man, this is a man on the verge of crossing over into the spirit realm honestly. Painful and eye opening to watch it happen in real time. The realization of what was happening slowly creeping in and overwhelming us, fear worry and concern coupled with hope wishful thinking and love, all encompassing moments that nobody ecer wants to have to experience but end up serving us for better than for worse. You wont get moments like these with many other bands if any. This was a singular moment in their history when the high water mark had been reached and they were slowly just washing back up towards shore, back to where the voyage had set off from all those years before.
3 sets in this frame of mind wasnt easy. no wonder by the end The Curtain With was so sloppy. anyways monumental stuff in phistory and i still enjoy these shows after seeing how much they and especially trey are thriving now a days
Saw this night of Coventry in the theater... I wasn't able to go, so I'm glad we drove one state away and caught one night of this sold out movie theater live stream. It was pretty shocking seeing Trey in the condition he was in. My brother who just passed recently, he and I would argue about this constantly. He would always say that Trey wasn't really that bad at Coventry, and my brother was there in person! I guess he didn't have his eyes on the screens and get to see the close up as much... as bad as he was, there was still some great music, it was like 1995 grateful dead, when it was right it was right, I enjoyed all three sets of this day
These shows were so awful. I saw. A lot of shows in the mid to late 90’s had a kid in 2000 and saw much less from 2001-2004 but was here for this. I hadn’t seen them in about a year or 18 months and it was shocking. Trey could barely play. Jerry in his worst days (pre 91-95) still could shred on guitar. It was just horrible this was the final shows and to end like this. So glad he got his stuff together. Because he’s such a talented musician. I still don’t see shows like I did in the 90’s and really don’t like much of the new stuff at all but I still like hearing them turn on some older stuff.
I mean for being on that level of fucked up I'd say he did pretty well for improvising. Having the fluffed up hair didnt improve his slickness though. I noticed he looks down more during jamming rather than compared to now where he looks upward more. Personally it seems like he wanted to change songs a little more so he was a risk taker in that sense, however his changes would lead to overconfidence causing him to miss cues or make the band struggle since they weren't expecting it as where Trey thought his changes were only subtle since hes off the shit but they were in reality pretty dynamic. Still at times high energy. Though not the best Phish performance, I'd rate it higher than Coventry.
Dope definitely makes you play different and you do more shifting with the playing and the fact of fade-in and fade out being another factor in the stream of consciousness and time changes and hearing things that you have not before and following it as it feels good but makes for chunky playing and the ethereal music is always a go to for inspiration and to rest in the hot fades of the Mind and body. Did this on drums. Playing my heart out but not listening and more playing leader or more keeping up.
Agree 100%. They could go from Brooklyn (which was phenomenal) to this, then to Coventry. Vegas and Coventry had good jams but 03-04 was risky and dark. Loved it. Glad everyone is healthy now though and Phish is still killing it
