My Experience Working at Cedar Point as a Ride Operator

- In the summer of 2020, I worked as a ride operator at Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio. This was one of the most memorable experiences of my life so far in both good ways and bad ways. This video is an overview of my experience working at the park. This video includes what I liked and disliked, as well as what you can expect if you're interested in working at Cedar Point.

I worked there for two seasons and I had a wonderful experience. There were downsides to it like the noise at the dorms or some lazy people here and there but overall it was an amazing experience. I had a blast and met people from all over the world. I worked in the Foods Warehouse office, so I had an office job. I was a supervisor both seasons and won the Cornerstone Award my first season. I think Cedar Point is what you make it. For me, I wouldn't trade it for not working there. I made memories I have for a lifetime. I went on the trips, I did the ride nights, I worked extra hours in tons of different departments. Family came to visit. It was great. I'm sorry you had such a bad time. I hardly think you can come into a new experience complaining that you didn't get what you wanted and that you didn't have proper clothing or sunscreen. They make UV filtering breathable long sleeve tees for like $30. And sunscreen is a must. I would have bought a brand new one in the highest SPF possible. Their job is to run one of the most popular parks in the world, not to cater to every single new employee there. My boss was one who was notoriously hated but he ran the entire food operation. He just wanted good workers. He gave me collector's buttons, brought us potluck for the warehouse a few times and gave me a voucher to ride The Ripcord and the Slingshot. I also took advantage of the special merch sales. My experience was resoundingly positive even with hiccups here and there and not having a vehicle on point. 🤷
Glad you had a great experience. It's really interesting to hear other people's experiences. Yeah, I'm sure some of that was my fault too. I had just graduated high school and didn't really know what I was getting myself into. I did wear sunscreen ever day, but the sunscreen I brought with me was either expired or low quality, and you can probably just say that was me being a dumb kid and not being prepared, but it's really surprising to me that Cedar Point didn't provide sunscreen to their workers. My entire crew and half the people I talked to had horrible sunburns after the first week. It felt like a nightmare. There was no shade at my ride and it felt like you were just cooking in the sun all day. I know everyone has a different experience and I'm really glad to hear you had a good one, but I still think it's worthwhile to share my experience, so other people know what they're getting themselves into and so they can be prepared.
@@Doofles oh, of course! As you said, it's different for everyone! I must say I'm in my 40s now and still commonly work outside, as I now work concerts and other events for Live Nation, no cover from sun or rain and they don't give us sunscreen either. Also, you should have gone to the hospital or clinic and then they would have given you days off with a doctor's note. Like you said, it's naivety of a young person that you had and there's no real advocates to help you navigate issues there. I had an injury and got three days off with my Dr note and then they revised my work load to get me more help to prevent further injury. My biggest advice would be to have a positive attitude, be flexible, be as prepared as possible, (I worked there before content creators were making and sharing these videos so if you guys feel lost well lmao we had no guidance) and to be your own advocate. That's anything in life. 😉
Dang no wonder why people seem to hate their life working there. I can't beleive they don't give employees free food thats kind of sad.
As someone who worked in rides this year I will say that they've made several changes (mostly good) since then, so if you ever want to give it another try I recommend it! However I understand if not (I'm pretty sure CP employees are just masochists for coming back every year, including myself lol)

are there actually rides that require an operator on the ride.!? or do most just sit/stand off to the side.?
What rides were you trained out while you worked there?
Late to this video, but I'm about to start my first season at Cedar Point this summer as a Ride Operator. What rides were you assigned to? They sent all new employees a form asking about ride preferences. I got assigned to Valravn, which makes since I told them I preferred fast-paced, adult rides. Being assigned to Valravn kinda surprised me given that it's one of the most popular rides in the park, and again, I'm a first-time Ride Op. I've heard locations can change at random though so I wouldn't be shocked if I get assigned to something else. Looking forward to it though, since Valravn always seems to have one of the nicest crews from a guest perspective.
That's awesome! I had no idea they were asking new employees for ride preferences. That was not the case when I was there. I had some friends who operated Valravn and they loved it! The lift walks are really cool. You do get trained at many different rides and moved based on staffing. As long as you have a good crew, you should be good. Good luck, I hope you enjoy it there!
@@RCT3fan9 Thanks for your reply! Were you assigned to Blue Streak in Dayforce, or did someone tell you Blue Streak? I've been wondering if my assignment will change last second, which seems to happen to a lot of people. They did send new ride operators a survey link asking for our ride preferences, which I heard is a new thing. I wonder if that means my current assignment is accurate or not.
Also I've heard a lot of great things about the Cedar Creek Mine Ride crew. And from my own experience as a guest at the park the last two summers, the ride operators there are always super chill and fun to talk with. Maybe I spoke with you once, who knows.
@@sc4158 I was assigned Blue Streak on HR fastlane but they got rid of that. It basically was just a way to speed up the hiring process and get your placement early. Last season I was placed at Magnum on dayforce before the season started but was told Steel Vengeance at the end of the IROC class. So both seasons my placement at the start was not what it ended up being. However, my friend’s placement last season was Gemini and that is actually what he ended up getting.
It says I’m on Maverick this season but I’m probably going to try to go back to Vengeance or go to Valravn with my supervisor from last season.
@@sc4158 Any updates on your experience with the season starting soon? I'm currently looking for a summer job and have an interview for Cedar Point tomorrow, but I'm still in a deciding state on whether or not I should go beyond this stage. I've seen and read a lot online but I don't know how much, if much of anything, has changed in the past couple years as most reviews I see are from 2020 or before.
@@wolfmaster6579 I won't be getting to the park for another 2 weeks, so I don't know much yet. I'll be sure to let you know when I can. As of now, I just know I check in at the HR office to get my associate ID before onboarding.
That said, if you're curious about the hiring process, the interview wasn't bad. A few basic questions like why you want to work at the park. I was hired on the spot after the interview.
Which Roller Coaster Do You Operate?
Did you have W or Kim M. as your area supervisors? Did you know anyone who worked at TTD in 2020? Do you feel favoritism is epidemic within the Rides Operations Department there?
CP is my local park, I frequent it often when its open. I have heard plenty about the company being cheap, and the sunburn story doesn't surprise me. To me, there are people capable or working outdoors in the sun and heat and there are people who arn't. Some people just hold up better there, and I know I wouldn't either. I don't understand how you wouldn't get overtime pay though. That just doesn't make sense to me.
It's an Ohio law. Due to the seasonal nature of the job, overtime pay is not available.
The coaster enthusiast side of me would still do it lol
I’ve gotta ask what the leave process is like. I do want to atleast visit 2 parks for a day or so if I work here but I am not sure how much time you get off.
You generally get one day off a week and the day is random. You receive your weekly schedule usually a day or two in advance.
@@Doofles One more question. If you work exceptionally hard and without a day break, can you get 2 days off some other week?
@215jrew You could always ask, but it is unlikely. You usually need a doctors note if you take time off. If you take too many days off, you will lose the job. I knew someone who left for a couple of days to go to a funeral and he was fired shortly after.
I knew it was hard work and has a lot of issues working there. But they don't even feed you while working!? Or at least make the food at cost? They need to change that

How u get hired
Might seem like a stupid question but it just occured to me. What if you need the toilet while operating a ride cause i assume you cant just leave the ride on its own. I know you have breaks but i assume theres a chance youll need the toilet outside of these breaks on a long shift
It can be a pain in the butt to deal with but what you would have to do is page/call for someone trained to come to take your spot. If your crew was staffed and could have someone fill in at your position. If not you'd have to call another ride or communications to send someone trained to fill in.
How much does the dorms actually cost
When I was there, it was $10/day.

They will most definitely hire you as long as you dress well at the interview and don't have a criminal record. They are usually in dire need of associates around this time of year since school has started back up. You got this! Good luck!
