Thanks! Just what I was hoping to learn about arborvitae. I planted a small privacy hedge with 26 emerald greens and they each have a few dead branches and are deadish inside. I needed to hear this from you... thank you!
Thank you for this great video. This is what I did to one of my arborvitaes yesterday and that was to clean out the dead foliage and trim away a lot of dead branches. But I probably trimmed more than I should have after watching your very informative video. I will trim and remove the dead foliage from my other one probably today. I learned so much today. 😍👍
Once a cedar/arborvitae is trimmed down to its brown stems, the area that is brown will not grow back. The upper part that is green, overtime may grow out a little to hide some of the lower parts.
I just moved into a house where the previous owner planted a bunch of these in a raised bed that goes around their fence line. It’s a tract home so our backyard is on the small side. They planted them fairly close together so I was wondering if I could trim them up from the bottoms a little to allow for room for some smaller plants.
Are you planning any updates on the arborvitae’s? I need to see what they look like after they been trimmed at the bottom. Mine are approximately 5 to 6 ft. I want to trim the bottom but I don’t know if they get taller from the top or bottom 😢
Should the fallen leaves be left on the ground forever, or should it be raked off from year to year? I find some white fungus or mold under the accumulated fall that's several years old.
I planted 11 emerald green last 2017 and so far they've only grown a foot in height and the leaves are thin that you can see the stem on most of them. They get full sun . Any idea how to make them grow faster? I'm here in Illinois. thanks in advance!
Hi there, Firstly I’m in England and a friend was throwing out some conifers and a couple of trees (small). I went and dug them up to bring to my garden but one of the conifers has brown inners branches and the needles are falling off. I want to save this conifer so I’m going to do what you have done in this video, but should I put some sort of feed or compost on top of the soil. I also dug up two little Christmas trees which are turning brown, are these dead or do you think I could save them? Love your video because you don’t waffle on like some other people’s videos......thank you 👍😃
I have some dead on one side at the bottom of mine I have been growing for 5yrs now from a baby & really don't want to lose my tree! I found your vid looking for help on trouble shooting the issue. My question is how yours do not reach the ground did you intentionally prune them that way or is that a result of this spring cleanup each year? Will they fill back out if I prune it?
Just the information I was looking for. Thanks.

This is what I need. Thank you very much! 😁
You’re welcome!! Thanks for watching
you did a really great job on the arborvitae ripley. there sure is a lot of land around your property. nice. later, carmine
So can you ever have the bottom fill out again? Or will the bottom stay bare forever?

Thanks for this video. I wonder if I cut the top of the tree to stop it grow taller. Would that be okay?

Great video! We have 30 foot tall arborvitae trees with dead branches inside that are 15 feet tall. Can they be safely removed from the trees?
Thank you
Thank you for the video. Especially the composting info. I have a few 20 foot Chinese arborvitaes. Can they be trimmed across the top to shorten them?
That's what I'd like to know too.
cleanup tree~look so better nice!!

Should I clean up the dead needles around it after Im done?
This is very helpful! Thank you
Glad I could help!

Can you use the debris trimmed from the tree as compost under the tree?
I don't see any reason not to :)

Second and third season they will grow faster. They are establishing a root system now

Thanks for sharing and I hope you have great luck. It’s always a possibility that you might flush out some new growth in the tree 🌲

Where da bottom of em go
What cultivar is this
You do not want to cut an arborvitae back that far. If you trim them past the green to the brown stem that area won't grow back.
No worries here . The deer eat it all up to 5 ft.........
Looks like you just need some new arborvitae, they shouldn’t be that dead at the base and they will never fill back in
They are doing great to this day and have actually shot out a few sprouts from nodes where I had to cut away dead branches.
