This video just makes me want to mod even more.
They'd sell more if they reduced the price. PCB's simply don't cost that much. You can call it R&D costs, but I'm positive you'd recoup faster if you sold more at a lower price. I don't decide that though, so good luck to them. But I can't afford that.
I understand your concern. I get it. It's really expensive. But you have to understand that it took a long time to develop. I can only say: If you can't afford a Wii portable kit, build your own.
Well they do need to recoup costs from all the development time they did on this thing since it’s been years in the making plus this is ultimately product for sale so there does need to be a profit made from this. They need to profit anyway to pay for everyone else’s work and to pay bitbuilt for actually selling and shipping the thing. Sadly I can’t afford this thing either but hopefully in the future I could and potentially find a Modder to build it for me or learn the skills to do it myself which will cost more money, even if you build this yourself from scratch it isn’t cheap. Your paying for the convenience of having pretty much all the hard components done and ready to build one you get everything else. Edit: also this is an niche enthusiast product and one of the first of its kind so you kind of have to keep that in mind too.

Considering that something like this is _already_ aimed at a relatively tiny niche market, they're really limiting their sales potential even more with that price. Also, not having any kind of a screen lens is a total deal-breaker for me. It's insane to pay that much for a portable console and not have the screen protected in any way.
Now you’ve got me thinking about how much a custom screen protector would cost, and from the looks what I’ve quickly googled, around $20 from what i’ve seen, which honestly isn’t as bad as I would have thought for a custom piece. Definitely important to protect that screen
