I love, love primers. They've changed my face! My fave is Maybelline Master Prime! Very smoothing and blurring and I'll be 70 next year!
These are great tips, Risa, even if they are “old school!” I’m old school…70 years young and I finally realize I need to do my makeup how it works for me and makes me look & feel like me! Thank you for this and the reminder to do what works for us individually!! 💖🤩
I followed your Bobbi Brown lipstick trick and them declutterred all the lippies I was never reaching for-keeping the ones that were actually complimentary
I need to do this!
That’s going to be my next makeup declutter project!
As a retired makeup artist of 30 plus years, I do not remember primers being a thing in the 90s. I would not have felt them to be that important if using a good foundation. However, as a 74 yr old, I have to say that a good primer is a necessity. I wouldn't think of doing my makeup without it.
I only just found your videos last week, and I find them quite edifying. You are amazing and quite lovely. Thank you.😊
I am a “retired “ makeup artist, and I cannot tell you how many times I tried to explain to women that they are not tight lining, they are water lining! This is a fantastic video, and thanks for reminding me of so many great techniques!
Love that you generously shared these helpful tips with us, Risa😊 The way it ALL clicked when you told us how to “properly” tight line so it doesn’t have to transfer to the lower lash line….wow, that would always happen to me! Now I know. Thank you❣️❣️
I'm 80 and still wear make up every day. Love learning new 'tricks'.
Well darling, you look FABULOUS!
I'm 78 and do my makeup every day. It's one of my fun, creative things to do.
I love you, Risa, and your channel. I appreciate your inclusion with older women.
Me too❤
Me, too:) I'm 78 and am learning how best to do my makeup, and I love trying new products and new techniques
Thank you for helping us older women with makeup
What great tips.I have used dark eye shadows for eyeliner for over 40 years. My mother taught me to always wear lipstick, no matter what. It will always make you look healthy. Glad to see old tricks are still relevant
This was an awesome video thanks Risa! I’m “new” to makeup tutorials and really enjoy you and your style.
I had the LM cake tightline and brush that was used with a smidge of water. Revolutionary at the time!!
You always make me smile. When you said you understand that not everyone wants to look younger, I said, “well, I’m not one of them”. Most of us want to look our best. We make lifestyle choices snd look for products and tips to try to make that happen.
All these women are absolutely admirable and are stars, but Laura Mercier as a brand just has such a special place in my heart. What she managed to create is such a high-quality, wonderful (yet somehow not overpriced) brand with absolutely solid long-time favorite products (like her blushes or powders). If I have to compare, she is like an expensive high-quality Italian cashmere brand in fashion - no matter the trends, this is what you’d go for to feel confident, comfortable and beautiful. Their body care is absolutely sumptuous as well.
Thank you as always for sharing your professional tips, Risa🌺🌸🌷
Re: blush placement. Make up, as with all graphic arts, creates shape using the contrast of light and dark Typically blush is darker than your base coloring and darker colors recede. Most women are trying for the effect of more prominent cheek bones, even shading underneath with contour, but that only works if your cheeks are lighter. I have seen some content creators adding "lift" by applying blush and bronzer straight up the side of their cheeks and beside their eyes. That just narrows what cheekbones they do have.
Your one in a million here on UA-cam!!! I have learned so much from you at the young age of 55 yrs. old:) Thank you, beautiful Risa!!! xo
Wow, thank you! 💖🙏🏻🥰
I really love this video. Thank you for sharing your history with all the iconic brands. SO interesting! As an almost 69 year old who did not start wearing makeup until age 50, I'm WAY behind the curve. I always learn so much from you, and I thank you!❤😊
I feel the primer is crucial. You put all this moisture and serum on the skin, then the skin drinks it in leaving makeup in the creases. The primer is the top coat before makeup. And setting powder to hold everything.
Thank you Risa for sharing these valuable tips! This was one of my favorite makeup tutorials. You and I are close in age so I remember when these icons were huge in the 90’s. Thanks again!🥰
Thank you for watching!! Xoxo ❤️
Risa, I believe I discovered your channel about 2 years ago and I haven’t missed a video since. This is likely my favorite one. I don’t always care as much about new products because they might be unavailable or different price points in Canada here. But any tips and personal opinions - I love those. You are very genuine and authentic.
I remember a quote somewhere that Beauty has no rules but makeup has a theory. I tend to go with that.
I will probably try every single tip you mentioned.
Thank you for the realness you bring into this “instagram” world.
I agree with you. Risa is a great teacher. I love her channel and her too.
Robert Welsh here on UA-cam says that.
@@HopeSenn I think that’s where I heard it. I like him as well. Same idea - you get an honest opinion, and the person feels genuine
Like I say Risa is the best teacher. Preach Risa! ❤
Great video! I keep thinking about tip number one and having the lipstick suit your face and brighten it even with no makeup on. This is always been the hardest thing for me. I'll go into a store or look online and feel totally confused about what colors would look good on me. Colors that are too dark or pigmented overwhelm my pale skin. I'd love to see a video about choosing lipstick shades. I know it sounds basic, but there's definitely some color theory there. With foundation and concealer, they always talk about whether it's a neutral shade, or warm or cool. I wish lipstick was as easy to match.
She ellar idea. I too have fair skin. Eyes are hazel/brown, coll skin tone with Salt & Pepper hair. I struggle with lipsticks and am trying to find a mid tone one that is not thrown out dark red.
This is one of your best videos. Thank you for the history of great makeup tips from the best artists. You are an EXCELLENT teacher and I learn techniques from you better than from the others I watch. Thank you!
Risa, your makeup always looks gorgeous.
💯💯💯!!!
LOVED this, Risa!! I’d love more 90’s / early 2000’s nostalgia videos. I miss those days. Would be cool to hear about your favorites from back then and more about behind the scenes of the brands.
I look always for your videos .I love your techniques of applying proper make up. Thanks Risa you’re flawless
At 49, I’m more into makeup, and better at it, than I’ve ever been! Love this video! ❤
Risa, I’m 64 years old and I really appreciate your knowledge!!! I am a pro-primer and I feel that it does keep my foundation and the rest of my makeup in place! Thank you for such an informative tips ❤. I will be trying them all; after all, what do I have to lose. 😊. Thanks again ❤❤❤
If I'm not mistaken, Laura Mercier's pioneering product is the Tinted Moisturizer. She also did Madonna's make up for some of her music videos in the 90s. Bobbi Brown's trademark is the no-makeup makeup look.
Such a cute history of Risa does makeup and oldie but goodie tips!
This is such a helpful video. As a makeup artist for the last 16 years I’m often frustrated with the one size fits all style of makeup. We all have different face shapes and the high blush isn’t for everyone, especially those with long faces like me 😂
Love this video. Brought back so many good memories. I was introduced to Trish McEvoy on QVC and love her makeup planners, and brush set. The triangle of light was a game changer for me. Also when I went to the office I'd do the dark shadow tight line. It was easier, thickened my lashes and I thought was more appropriate for the office. Keep up the great work.
A Laura Mercier MUA taught me that puff technique when I bought the powder and I use it with all my powders when my makeup needs to look good all day. I still have the puff from about 8 years ago as it washes like a dream - I throw it in with my reusable cotton rounds when I do a load of towels. I still use the OG LM powder :) When I find makeup products that looks good on my nose I tend to cling to them!
Your journey is fascinating to someone from the outside, who knows nothing of the industry. I feel you describe it very well and in a way that cuts out the BS. Thank you so much for being genuine and true.
I would never think of doing my make up without a primer. I have all types of primers, and I love that my foundation can look so many different ways depending on what kind of primer I use underneath.
I so agree about the blush technique. I am a mature woman, but have always had high cheek bones. No they aren't as high as I was in my twenties or thirties, but there not dropping to my chin😅I like my blush to look like I am naturally flushing and apply mid pupil out and up no higher then my eye. My first real job was working the makeup counter at Eckerd Drug Store when I was 16. We didn't do make overs, but did recommend products for skin type, color, whether you were a cool or warm. Diplomats were not a thing at the time, but for mature woman we were taught the tissue and powder blot method. It still works today if you want your lipstick to last longer and not travel. Thank you so much for your great insight into makeup history.
Risa, I worked for all of those brands as well, and several others. I learned so many techniques that still hold true today. Laura’s assistant was Kristofer Buckle, who is currently a famous celebrity makeup artist (Mariah Carey.)
I know you said there's no rules but... I have a sheet of paper in my makeup case that says "Risa's Rules". LOL! Basically, it's just the "order" in which you do things. I find it super helpful so thank you!!
This was so timely for me….followed right along as I was doing my makeup today, having fallen into some real ruts and ways of applying concealer, blush, eyeliner and lip liner. Thank you so much Risa, this really helped!!
I found it interesting when you were talking about concealer and blush placement. If you blend the concealer it hides some problems when you do it the “old” way. I had never heard the excellent explanation of how and where to apply blush and it makes perfect sense no matter your age. Thanks for the refresher!
Risa, I thought this was one of your best videos.
I loved the Trish McEvoy ‘file folder’ of makeup
Oh Risa, I’m the one struggling with tightlining, I made all these mistakes you’re talking about! 🤦🏼♀️ I’m excited to try it tomorrow the right way- can’t thank you enough! 🙏🏻
Very cool video!! I really enjoyed hearing about your experience in starting as a makeup artist. It’s obvious how talented you are and how those women played a role in your training. I trust all your recommendations! ❤️🩷🧡
Thank you so much!!
Loved the tricks, a good reminder that new can be just new not better.
So glad you started talking about placement of blush. I've been seeing a lot of podcasts were makeup artists are advising to place the blush on the cheekbone! I don't follow trends. Never have. I know what looks good on my face, and for my face shape, blushes look good under my cheekbone.
Yeah the lip liner trick was a gamechanger for me back in the day because lipliners used to more stiff than they are now and harder to apply to the skin. I've been doing that for 20 years now and I am 53 now ❤
Yes, like the MAC liners. I always used Spice!
I love the that you commented on blush placement. It seems like all the video's I watch say to use two possibly three different blushes and to blend them at the temple and eye - I think it looks very clownish.
Bobbi still is an apple of the cheeks girl. If you’ve seen one of her Jones Road commercials, you notice no matter the age of the model she has them apply her Miracle Balm directly to the apples of the cheeks. I’m not into the super minimal makeup yet, but the Miracle Balm is pretty. Maybe a Jones Road makeup look is in order. I don’t know what all she has, but I know there’s a foundation too. Thanks Risa! This was very informative. I’m especially going to try the press & roll powder method. 💕 Jessica
Thank you for the great tips. Really enjoyed your video !!
❤Risa❤ I love this type of video story time from your career! Do more
Thank you,! You are very clear on how you explain the reasoning behind the application! I absolutely could relate to the tightlining with a kohl type liner and having it transfer to lower lids instantly. I went through a ton of Q tips cleaning it up. Brilliant! True artist my dear
I love these types of videos. I’ll be 62 and these are very helpful tips. Thank you ❤️
I do the triangle bc i just look tired without it. if you take it down around the sides of the nose it always balances out the contrast.
I had a Trish McEvoy palette back in the early 2000s which I loved. I'm also a fan of Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown from those earlier days. I had a makeover with a Laura Mercier makeup artist, but unfortunately I have super sensitive eyes. When she tried the tight lining technique, my eyes started to water and would not stop for quite some time. I'm just not able to wear my makeup with tightlining. I do love Bobbi's tips, and Rose Marie Smith of RMS Beauty agrees with a lot of those. I have started to wear my blush old-school again. Thanks for reminders that we can be creative and not need to follow the trends if they don't work for us. xoxo
Risa!!!
You’re one of my favs!
Thank you for all of these tips and tricks! I’m 58 and I love learning!
Keep doing what you’re doing!
Totally saving this video!😊
This video is fabulous! You have worked with some of the best in the industry which explains why you are one of the best!🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉ty Risa!! Iconic!!
Very informative video. I always use to apply blush the way Bobbi Brown suggested. I got away from that after watching other beauty influencers applying it higher up. Now I am back to doing it on the apples of my cheeks and blending it upwards. I am loving the way it makes me look.
Beautiful, intelligent Risa- so much talent and care given. Thank you for sharing. ❤ You are an awesome woman. I appreciate you.
The way you tight lined was how I thought it was supposed to be done. And the other tips are brilliant.
What a great video Risa, really enjoyed the tips and hearing about your makeup artist journey. At 70 I am always trying to improve my makeup application techniques.
Oh yes the Triangle of Light!😂 When Trish would appear on HSN to sell her kits, she always referenced that technique. They way she did it was beautiful.
I LOVE the tips!!!
The best tip I ever heard was from a makeup video Rihanna did years ago; it was when contouring was a huge craze & Rihanna's tip was simply to learn your own face & how to contour your bone structure bc what works for one will not necessarily work for all. Learning specific techniques for YOUR face makes all the difference
I absolutely love this video!!! Please consider sharing more in a future video. 💙💙💙
Great Tips! I love the old school techniques. No wonder your great with makeup. Impressive background! Enjoyed listening!
This was so interesting! Several "Tried and True" methods I've used for years never let me down and I learn that only after I try something new that's out there. That's not to say I haven't changed things as I age. Learning more about your journey into the makeup world was so cool. I loved it.
What an excellent video. Thanks for doing this.
I appreciate you being here for us !
I did the loose powder roll technique this morning, WOW! So impressive! Thank you for sharing these tips!
Thanks risa I am in my mid 50s 😊and find this video very helpful❤
Great idea for a video Risa; thank you!
That was a stellar performance~A+! Thanks a bunch!
I don’t hate primers, I think they have their place. As I’ve gotten older, and drier, I think prep is more important than primers.
Age 72 here…I really enjoyed this video! So good to be reminded of these beauty icons and their teachings. And, it was great to learn more details of your career. You really did rub shoulders with these women! How exciting! I miss those makeup counters that were staffed with well trained professionals who knew the line inside and out.
Great tips Risa! Thanks for sharing them with us. I am going to go through my lipsticks and try Bobby Brown’s method to see which ones should stay and which should go! Always enjoy your videos!
I learned so much from this video!!!
Most of these tips are really timeless! Can't go wrong...blush should be dependant on face shape, or else a full blown clown may appear..lol. Thanks for sharing from some of the best!
I worked for Bobbi too. 🤗 My training was at her Studio in NJ. Best training I've ever had with a company.
Risa, as always, your tips and impressions are superb. Thank you so much for helping us look and feel more beautiful. ❤ So informative.
Great video. One of your best. I love how non-judgmental and inclusive you are. I guess I’m old school but I still use some of those techniques. I use the Trish eyeliner technique exclusively. It opens the eyes and creates a nice, intense but natural look at the base of the lashes. Love Trish techniques and products. Thanks, Risa.
Always great advice. Although since everyone's face's are different, the placement of blush no matter what your age is, isnt the same for everyone . Yes the placement of blush higher on the cheek of a maturing face is somewhat correct, but its not 100% . I think its always good to be open-minded to try different things.
Like you, Im in my 50s and still have oily skin. There are days I leave the house without foundation, but NEVER without primer and powder to keep the shine down. While putting blush higher up might give it a lift, we also lose volume and color in our cheeks. we can do both! I love blush and am loving the new sunset blush look.
This is a great video tutorial -what a throw back - I still have great Trish brushes from the 90’s, several of her eyeliner brushes, loved the tight liner technique you shared, I will go from there top into the lashes and will try the bottom method - love blush on the apples of my cheeks - Thank you, Risa!
These are some of the best tips I've ever heard! Thanks for sharing them and please keep sharing more!
Great video Risa!🌹❤I always found those old tricks work for me everytime...thank you for sharing these tips!
I’m pro primer. I live in the heat and humidity of the South and have combo skin. Primer is a necessity for me.
Risa, I use Trish McEvoy Instant Eye Lift and do the triangle of light under my eyes. However, I don't put a powder over it because that just shows my wrinkles under my eyes, which are papery thin, even though I realize nobody really gets that close up. I do use a very fine neutral Fenty powder to set my Trish McEvoy Beauty Balm on the rest of my face, using that press and roll technique. Is that the best way to use Instant Eye Lift? I only put powder where I don't have wrinkles, unless it's a quick bit of blurring powder with a brush.
I love your videos! I am 55 and had given up wearing makeup at all for awhile when it just didn't look good on my aging skin anymore. Thank you for creating these super helpful videos. I'm practicing your makeup techniques and learning to wear makeup again and I love the results!
The tiniest brush in the Rephr collection (34) is spectacular and it lays down the thinnest, most beautiful line of shadow along the top lashes. The flat brush you use is very nice but I find the Rephr is easier, thinner and works every time! Nice tips. Thanks!
I use Smash Box primer and I love the velvet feel it gives my skin.
Risa, you have so much experience, I love it when you share tips and this was a wonderful way to honor your past mentors- keep these coming 💕
Ahhh the memories...guess I'm a creature of habit, still doing a few of these. The 'press and wiggle' and tightlining with shadow are my favorite way to define the eye. My favorite brush for these techniques is the Wayne Goss E6.
Totally agree with you about placement of the blush. Love it on the apples of the cheeks.
Really enjoyed this video! I use Laura Mercier's tinted facial moisturizer. I love her tinted facial moisturizer. The color is perfect and it has a very natural looking finish. I had always wanted to use Secret Camouflage but couldn't figure out which shade to get. I remember Bobby Brown for popularizing yellow concealer. Thanks for Laura Mercier's eyeliner tip. I will be using it.
I loved your Instagram post yesterday! I also love the idea of different tips from different MUAs! Great tips! Wayne Goss shows that same powder puff tip!
Smashbox Photo Finish Oil-Free Pore Minimizing Primer is amaaaazing! It's the only primer I have ever used that made my pores seem to disappear.
Hi Rissa 🖐, thank you again for this video. I tried the triangle of light today (never did the fill in triangle that was popular for awhile). But OMG WOW game changer. My eyes looked great today. These were great ideas. I still have a love/hate relationship with powder at times. Depending on the time of the year powder can look really nice on me and other times my skin is just too dry no matter how much I prep and moisturize etc.
You've mentioned that Laura Geller powder translucent several times off and on during the last 5-6 years that I have watched you.
OmG core memory unlock. Amazing how these hit you out of the blue. Anyway Back when I met and spoke with you when you were at Armani's store my mother-in-law and I were together you helped ne & someone else helped her. You had suggested the Geller powder translucent to us and check Sephora for it. At the time I couldn't afford that powder by myself but she bought it and I paid her half and then when we got home we split that container in half between the two of us to use. And I remember using it and having a container that it was in long time ago haven't used the powder since. But now I want to see if I can find a small sample size or travel size of it to try that powder again now that you mention it. Haha but then again maybe I should hold off and wait because I have a lot of powders that I should probably use first. Although I do love the Givenchy prism Libre that by far is probably my favorite.
actually, it’s Laura Mercier not Galler
I love videos like this with tips that really do work. My favorite are the ones for lining the eyes. So helpful.
Wow, this was really helpful to me. I avoided lip liner for just that very reason! And I love your philosophy about no rules, wear what you love. Thanks a lot for the tips. For a person like me, with no mother, sister, aunt, or any other women in my life, I have to learn from youtubers, and you are the BEST!
Thanks Risa! Bare Minerals and Smash Box both had primers around the same time .
End of 90's -
Only pitfall I find with the apples of the cheeks are that as gravity takes it's toll, the apples of the cheeks drop some ... and lose volume ... so we can smile and the apple looks plump and juicy, but when we relax the face the apples are more like dehydrated apple slices! Kind of flattened! Lol....
Great point. I first heard this tip from Wayne Goss before it was a trend and it makes sense. He said as women age, they get deeper hallows under the eyes and concealer is great for dark circles but you may still have hollows. If you take your blush up higher and over that hollow a little bit - it makes your eyes look less sunken. This really works for me! My cheeks have definitely dropped so I apply higher. Makeup is very individual.
What it really comes down to is the shape of your face. If you have a thin face, the apples are great because it makes your face appear fuller and younger. But if you have a fuller face (or drooping cheeks) I feel like blush on the apples makes me look like Minnie Mouse 🐭🤡
Like Risa said, there should be no hard and fast "rules". Try different techniques and take pictures. Ask friends and family if you can't decide what looks best. We can do what works best for our own facial structure. I need to wear bronzer/contour higher on my cheekbones not under them, or it drags my face down and I look sad lol. Then I apply my blush above that. But I am always trying new things and if you make a mistake just wash it off. Trends are fun but suit yourself!
@@AllySa33I will have to try that with blush. My skin is in pretty good shape but undereye hollows are the bane of my existence. I have always been afraid blush there would look worse so have avoided any techniques that are near the area
Loved hearing the tips. Ive learned so much over the years. Never ever did anything for my brows (except pluck strays), only moisturizer, concealer, mascara, lip gloss. Very basic. But, love makeup. Always fascinated me. Love all the colors and looks. Trial and error on what looks good on me (I stay away from nude lipsticks). Its fun. 😊
