  • Pressfit bottom bracket and its creaking might be a nightmare for some of you as well as a reason why not to purchase some bikes. Fixing it is not that much of an issue though...

Al, great to see you back. Your vids are the best on YT. Down to earth and not requiring a life time subscription to park tool. Keep them coming.

This video just saved me from replacing my bottom bracket. I swapped out my pedals and no more creaky creaky. Thank you!

Step 1: Throw the frame away.
Step 2: Buy a frame with a threaded BB.

I have a Fuel EX wich was creaking as hell... I thought it was the bb because it creaked only when pedaling. I checked and cleaned everything. I disassembled my whole bike and used a torque wrench for every screw. In the end it was the abp pivot in the rear wich has from factory no grease in it. I put some grease on it and my bike is quiet.

I have the same issue, is it the pivot the rear axle goes through?

@@jordanlayfield8975 yes. Remove the nut, clean everything, put grease on it.

We could of had threaded 46 mm shell, just because you change the bearing size for using a 30 mm shaft does not mean you throw out the threaded BB. This Press fit works fine for stationary motors but bikes are completely different with climbing that is when creaking appears. If you live in the flats your road bike will never get any creaking if you just sit and ride the bike, the problems start when you stand up and pedal up hills.

How to fit a creaky pressfit bottom bracket ....sums it up nicely

  • @chm1701

Each company has vastly different ideas on BB diameter when making a PF BB shell, which drives me nuts. I've literally beaten the living hell out of a PF BB (with the correct removal tool) and it wouldn't shift easily. The sooner companies go back to threaded, the better.

As someone else said: throw frame away, dont buy pressfit garbage, get a threaded frame.

Here is how to fix that problem. Stay the fuck away from press fit bottom brackets. They are a horrible idea in an already confusing world of bottom brackets

  • @X_Squared_X

Quite brave to tap out the bearings like that without the proper tool...You could actually make the open slightly bigger doing it that way...

Easy fix, dont buy pressfit bikes/frames and the manufacturers will understand than other than xc race bikes, where every gram count, we don't want that type of BB.

From experience with 5 bikes owned between myself and a friend, only my CAADX with BB30 has been any trouble. The others with PF30 and BB86 have done thousands of miles without creaks. My friend's road bike is well over 10,000 miles on the original bearings. If it's well made it's not necessarily a problem and doesn't put me off. Agree threaded is the better solution though in the long run.

    • @danfuerthgillis4483

The reason for press fit was for Road bikes to use a 30 mm shaft for the pedals which is much lighter and stiffer than the normal 24 mm. This would increase the size of the BB shell so they had to toss threaded out. You can get adapters for inside the frame and press fit the bearings after, or use the threaded press fit BB. BB386 is the last step in this now as it is compatible with everything.
