Do you ride with a press fit BB?
nope. all of my 5 bikes have threaded BB
I guess I do on my 2012 Scale 30, but never had to do any maintenance on those even though I ride through muddy german winters. Seems like the shop I bought it from did a nice job building the bike. But thanks for the video, in case they do wear out some day...
Yep, my 100mm hardtail, 8yrs - annual service, never had any problems.
Yes i got Hollowtech II , if i remove it, it might be a chance of religious conversion to another :)
I have a 2013 Giant XTC haven't had an issue yet with it, but I've been looking to replace it. Not sure with what though, Chris King or Crane Creek etc.
Doing a head set and Bottom bracket shoot out or comparison would be great!
Great video's from you guys as always, cheers!
“Something of little to no value” the GCN apron. I love a good joke about road biking like that.
Haha!
MapleSyrupGuy loved that too xD
bob taco You mean 5/5?
Joke?

We finally found out what Doddy uses in his hair...it’s retaining compound!
Perfect timing. My PF bottom bracket is starting to creak and GMBN Tech has got me covered. Love the detail in these vids. :)
Awesome to see a tech giving tech advice on the internet. Great job!
*Fantastic*. Also nice to see this work being done on a dirty bike with miles on it, as opposed to a clean, brand new kit that comes apart easy.
Awesome video on the maintenance of the bottom bracket, you made it look easy with the correct tools. Cheers!👍🚴🏿
Wooow. Thank you so much. Its a little reminder for me because its my first day in a bike shop tommorow
Great video! I don't have a press fit tool, so I used my very large vise that I happen to have. Worked most excellent.
Doddy the master of tech!
Great Video, thanks Doddy
Awesome video. Doddy is the Don! Love the workshop area so much, wish my garage was like that. 😉
I loved it when Dod so detailed on this kind of job. My Scott is kinda rough when pedal back and tickling on high gear, I tought it was BB but after watching this, I'm sure its only cartridge bearing.
Thanks for the informative video and instruction.
Dave
Excellent how-to video 👍🏽👏🏽
Awesome video Doddy
Great video doddy
Good one, thanks!!
The cups that thread together are great. Press one side wrench the other in.
Very helpful!
Press fit vs Threaded is a selling point for me. It's the first detail I look at when considering a bike. I will ALWAYS go for the threaded bb.
It's such a small factor (from the outside) and it seems such a dealbreaker for some. Super interesting!
Yes, very small but so important for me. I like doing my own maintenance, don't like creaking and don't want to buy more specialty tools. That tolerance will eventually fade and the bike will be worthless. It's what my brain thinks. I mean let's be real...is the slight bit of extra width that much better for the consumer? or is the majority of benefit going to production costs? just my 2 cents. (THANK YOU SANTA CRUZ!)
I see why people think that way really, maybe it's partly because people in general are reluctant to change? I mean how long has the BSA standard been around for now? If I can I'll go for a BSA BB myself but I won't let a good deal on a bike pass by just cause it has a PF BB. I got my scott genius for a few months now and haven't noticed any problems and in the shop I worked there most people never said anything bad about their PF BB we installed.
@@boomerangfreak in my case I have no problem to change to something better or just different, I had three bikes with press fit and all of them had creaking noises, I took them to big shops and they couldn't do anything to solve the problem, and in two of them the mechanic told me press fit is a problem. Since then I pay attention to my friends bikes and some of them creak and they just don't care, but they have the problem. Now, my current bikes have threaded bb and no one creaks. Just my personal experience
@@tomas7403 try using Loctite 641. I used it on pf86 with alu insert in frame (not carbon) and it shut the creaking up
great vid
Thanks Doddy
Another entertaining and informative vid from Doddy!
Can you do (or have you done) an in depth video/series on wheel building and hub maintenance?
We're looking into it!
Excellent guide! That said, _man,_ do I appreciate my threaded BB a lot more now. =) If I'm buying something new in the future, I'd want something like a T47 BB.
When you took the cup out and noticed it was dry - That's why I do a fresh install when I get a new bike, bb, headset, even hub bearings. Sometimes they come improperly assembled - dry bearings, dry pressfits, no loctite, wrong torques. loctite 609 and 638 are good to have. Also, even thought the bearings feel good, might as well pop the seal, flush, replace the grease. Grease is a solvent and you don't know how "full" it is unless you look at it.
Thanks for this, my N+1 needs press in and I was lost with al l the info on Bb's.
Man you guys rock! thanks for the video, this is a must do on my Yeti 5.5. just rode in some crap and the noise coming from the cranks and BB shell, oh Boy. Seriously cannot say enough good things about your channel!!!!!
Thanks Dave! Such praise!!
Hey guys, so I got the tool for removal of the bottom bracket, and all the recommend grease and compounds. So when I went to remove the bottom bracket only the actual bearings came out and I could not get the actual press fit cups out? and idea? I did not want to force anything due to it being a carbon frame, this is on a 18 Yeti 5.5
@@beardsleymcbearderton6492 Did you have an answer to this question/problem? Thank you for sharing if you have. Same problem over here...
Forgot to mention that you can also use a threaded rod, 2 compatible nuts for the thread on the rod, and a selection of washers of differing outer diameters but with inner diameters large enough to slide into the threaded rod. 2 spanner’s/ wretches for the nuts and boom, bodge complete
This is essentially what the 50quid press is, for no more than a tenner.
Thought you were the king of bodges doddy!!!
As a sponsor I dont think park tool would like that so much lol
Guess it's park tool zip ties next!
Ain't gonna work, the different washers will move all over the place and the cups won't alingn perfectly.
@@pankulfon6067 I have the correct bearing inserts that go inside the cups which slide along bolt being compressed by washers and nuts
good video
Very good vid - the lack of views clearly shows that most folks take their bike to the local shop for even a simple job like this - that's life :-(
Quite powerful stuff ;)
My Liv pique has had a new press fit BB, Liv tech pages say use a thin film of normal grease before pressing new cups in. Worked fine, no threadlock nor primer needed. Carbon BB shell BTW, plastic cups.
Doddy can.you please do a vid showing how to maintain various types of suspension pivots typically found on full sussers. I think I mean suspension linkage but not sure what they are called. It's the moving parts of the frame connected with bushings or bearings. Never understood if these needed maintenance or servicing.
Hi! Can you please make a video on Where to use grease and/or anti seize and what kind of those use? thank you
I can see that you have made some sort of chainstay protector like the ones on the new stumpjumpers.
Thanks Doddy, another great video.
You using a torque wrench reminded me of something I've been meaning to ask for a while though. I know it's recommended to always store a torque wrench with it at the lowest setting but does this also apply to a Park ATD? I assume it does and always set mine to 4Nm after use but I can't find anything to confirm it online. I could just ask Park of course but I figure you'll know this and the answer may help more than just myself.
Nice vid as always. The tool that you use to press the bottom bracket is the Park Tool HHP-2, is that it ?
This was a really thorough video. Good work Doddy!
Would love to know wich hub he ran on his bike at that time! It sounded amazing 🤤
Hi Doddy, Love the channel. I probably seen most of it since I came across you guys.
Now during the forced holidays I decided to resume my XC bike build I was postponing for a while now, so I'm 100% ready when we're free to leave the house :)
Ive seen hundreds of videos on bike and new tech which keeps changing every year.
I got a great deal on barely used 29er with SRAM Eagle 1x12 drive and decent air fork. Frame I got is Merida Big9 7000, which I'll use to transfer the components to.
Issues I'm having is to decide on proper spacers for DUB PF BB92. Second issue is the headset which is FSA NO.55E (company web specs) but I have issue finding it here in Australia. Is there other headsets I can use? I'm confused with so many options.
Apologies if my questions seem trivial, it is my first bike build this century and so much has changed. Your channel is amazing and helps so much. Thank you guys. #AskGMBNTech
"Something of little or no value" - brings up CGN merch... I love how smart Doddy is throwing shade on roadies this way :D
I use a g-clamp and a couple of pieces of 12mm plywood as a bearing press. I have written Park Tools on them with a permanent marker.
M10 threaded bar a couple of penny washers or even old bearings the same diameter as the BB, is a useful DIY bearing press.
Dude you make it look so easy
It's all about practiced hands. And there's only one way to get there....practice!
Love the vid Doddy & all those tools! But your missing and essential piece of gear that’s gotta be in any shop! A simple toothbrush... good for all those nooks that you gotta get squeaky clean.
Exactly! ... But park tool toothbrushes are hard to find.
Problems I see with press fit bearings in bb shell & integrated headsets is they eat away the frame.
I think I sohudl go with Chris king pressfit headset & threaded BB.
So far I got good experience with it, I usually notice wear of headset bearings after few months, or weeks with other bearings I tried.
the worst experience ever was FSA bearings on my fuel ex, on one bike the top bearing was crushed after just few weeks, metal shavings every where.
since then I swapped for enduro & cane Creek bearings.
but one one bike it wore faster than the other, maybe the frame has something to do with it, it also got a inwards dent, although it did not have an impact.
I will also stay away from carbon frames.
No grease on the axle before reassembly, I usually grease the axle and inside the seals?
Also, what are your thoughts on praxis or wheels mfg threaded press fit bb’s? I’ve generally replaced with one of these after a bit (or first creak) and use grease instead of assembly compound. Just curious on what you think.
Thanks for doing this video. Great as I only asked for one the other day 👍🏻
It was a good suggestion!
4:00 A good way to remove stuck cranks is with big Allen key & using your foot, if doing so with stripped frame, you have to put a rubber mat o nthe floor and crank on it and ten stamp on the Allen eky.
if on a complete bike, just hold the bike & crank and stomp on the Allen key.
Been looking at a Commencal clash for the new bike. everything on the bike is mint other than the fact it’s got a pres fit bb, is there any advantage to a press for as oppose to a threaded one
Is there anything that could be used as an alternative to the Ap-1 compound?
Can you now do a vid on creaking integrated headsets? Thank you!
14:30 I am feeling really attacked right now.
Ive just got a scott 910 genius like yours but mine has shimano xt bb and cranks will it be a similar job pls cheers
I have a Scott Genius 920, and I was wondering if Scott offers a bash guard for the bb/front sprocket, and if so who manufacturers them, and how they installed? Thanks John
Can you use the seem tool for remove the bottem bracket when you use the primer AP-1 and the compound RC-1
Hi GMBN
Quick question have been interested in buying a trek fuel ex but have discovered it has the press fit bottom bracket..
What I'm really asking is should you avoid bike's with this type of bracket?
Do you have any instructional video what how to mainten about bottom bracket fitness bike(Schwinn Ac sport, Peloton bike....)? Please comment.
Hi i have a question, my crankset and bottom bracket is Sram xo1 with sram pf92 bottom bracket, i would like to change it to shimano crankset and bb, what bottom bracket from shimano should i use? Thanks.
Ive got a shimano bb71 that I need to fit into an aluminium frame, do I need any retaining compound or anti seize?
I have a press fit BB and was wondering if there is any bearing press that works both with BBs and hubs. This presses are really expensive and I would really like to have one for both jobs. If you have any suggestions, I would really appreciate them.
When I was taking my gxp pf bb out only my bearings came out any tips to get the cups out
Hi i need to replace my bottom bracket on my giant talon 1 2019 there is a pro wheel pw-bb73+ iin it now im looking to buy a better one any ideas on a upgraded 1
Just us a large bolt and washers and nut problem fixed easy to get them back in that way and way cheaper
Would it be okay to use a long thick bolt with to big washer ithier end i work inns garage and I can get stuff like that easy, just to save the money
You gotta appreciate the proper procedure and the reality check procedure.
I got a Di2 kit for my Cervelo P2 but unfortunately it comes with those Press Fit BBright brackets (and I just bought an Ultegra crank which is 24mm). I’m thinking about leaving the Cervélo brand just because of all the headache about loctite, special tools, adapters, and chances of damaging the frame. It seems that a threaded bottom bracket would be much cheaper to service and Shimano does the Ultegra/DuraAce threaded bottom brackets as well.
Haven’t installed the Ultegra Di2 kit yet, and although I bought the bike at a bike shop, I want to do the upgrade myself (or go with a cheaper mechanic).
should the retaining compound be allowed a set up time before riding? Like a few hours or overnight?
When if I have Threads on the insigne would that be faulty Fiam bracket or Try taking a parting to cean it
Where can i possibly get dust seal replacements?
Is the retaining compound absolutely necessary in a carbon frame? So many extras to buy for this job...
Hi, I just installed my pressfit BB86 with resing cups (Shimano BB-RS500) for the first time inside my bare carbon shell. Is it normal for the resing cups (or bare carbon) to snap/click loud like this when pressing in ? I was afraid I am damaging something ( I was using a home made press tool) but I ensured that the cups were prefitted parallel to the shell axis. I also lubricated both the cups and the shell with a little bit of waterproof grease. I think that even though the grease has been applied, the cups were sort of 'tension jumping' due to the friction with carbon but I want to make sure that this snapping noise is normal for bare carbon shells. can you advise ?
do you recommend shimano assembly paste or loctite?
If you have an aluminium frame, do you still need the press-fit retaining compound?
Are the press fit adapter suppose to sit on the bearing or on the shell when pressing them in?
This video couldn't come at a better time. My BB has been creaking for the past few weeks and just today it was particularly bad and really needs fixing. In fact it's so bad now that the crank wobbles a bit inside the BB!
That's in desperate need of work!
Does anyone have a link for a good bottom bracket press? There are so many online options and I dont know which one I need. My bike is a 2018 Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt Carbon 50. (incase that affects things)
Is there a difference between the Park Tool Retaining Compound and some blue Loctite?
#askgmbntech have you tried installing icg bashguard over pressfit bottombracket on scott genius?, how do I go ahead with installing one on mine?
Thnks m8, so when you say if it creaks it could be down to not being fitted correctly......?so wiggle you frelled my press fit bb
Dude (or dode), you cracked me up with that 'something of little or no value' - GCN t-shirt joke! +1
How do I tell what BB is on my rockhopper comp 2018?
You're not greasing the axle of your cranks? I always grease my axles if only for a extra layer of water protection, is this good or not?
Also question of the century, 1 cup at a time or both at once? When installing the cups for a new headset on my bike I did both at once but when I was working in a LBS they said 1 at a time is better as it makes sure the cups are straight to the frame.
What is the cracking sound at 15:40? I had the same and I doesn't feel right.
Do you press in 1 at a time or both?
Can you use the same tool for the headset?
I'd recommend putting in one bearing after the other to get them in straight! Also i wonder why you didn't put grease on the crank itself before installing it into the bottom bracket?
fabianinthemiddle that’s going to end up worse though, the bearings need to be square with each other, so they don’t wreck the spindle
Anybody know where I can get some Adhesive primer from?
Don't forget that all torque wrench accuracy is dependent on hand placement, you choked up on the wrench when you were tightening the chainring retention bolts.
Johnny Saudade the force at the fulcrum is not determined by hand position on the wrench and the force of the fulcrum is the only important number in the process.
@gmbntech 6:30 don't be rude with GCN xD The workshop apron is of high value, even if the one from GMBN might be of higher value ;)
Did you lube the axle before you reinstalled it?
Did I miss putting a little grease on the BB spindle?
Can someone help.. What chain stay protector is that please
How much does that service cost?
Thanks
What if with the specialist tool, there is no movement of the press fit?! The pressfit is mounted in an aluminium Cube Mtb frame. The crankset itself was already covered with a lot of "dirt" (rusty looking fat, earth...)
The specialist tool slips from time to time when you are hammering to try to get the press fit bottom bracket out.
No succes so far, I let it rest a night after spraying it with degreasing/cleaning product. I hope this will help.
But some extra tips would be handy!
Would the rocket tool damage a carbon frame?
token and wheels components are both making threaded press fit bb way more easier to maintain and install
Hey up Doddy, does GMBN tech do tech product reviews, I am looking for a good action camera but not to expensive as I will probably smash it up, can you recommend any ?
We don't actually do product reviews, but we've been playing around with the Insta360 lately and it seems quite easy and good fun.
I wish Doddy is me neighbor around the corner. I'm hanging around for sure 😂
