- SAND. TRUCKS. HILLS. JUNGLE. It’s been a strange month because my preconceptions of Uruguay and Brazil were so different from the reality. Normally my judgement is spot on, but I didn’t plan to end up here, so I guess I didn’t have time to think about it.
Uruguay is so liberal and so peaceful. It's amazing how different the culture is to the surrounding countries despite having a similar history. Brazil is ultra busy and hilly. It's super hard to get away from all the ruthless truck drivers! There are so many wild animals, such beautiful landscapes as well as incredible European architecture to admire.

Amazing! I'm Brazilian and I live in Rio Grande do Sul. Already go to Gramado once and you are very brave to ride theses roads with those crazy truck drivers. Every time that I go for bike packing I just look for secondary roads too.

I was very happy to see a bike rider finally coming to Brazil. It is very hard to see this kind of trips passing around here. Maybe because that issue with the truck drivers, which is sad but true. Welcome to Brazil! Traffic is really dangerous around here and you should be really careful about your stuff, lots of bandits also. But people are mostly very friendly and nice. Hope you enjoy your trip around here!

That Brazil section had me flashing back hard to a trip I made there in 2015 to just west of Gramado, a place named Caxias do Sul. You do NOT want to be on those roads after dark on or in anything. I know you were well north of there when you hit that mud slick road but, wow, man you got sooooooooo lucky for so many reasons. There are a lot of things that can come out of that darkness and make a meal out of you, not forgetting about some of the people. All I could think while watching that last bit was ignorance is bliss. I'm quite sure you've been through more dangerous situations overall but I highly doubt you've ever been in more danger per square inch than the south of Brazil. The trucks were actually the least of your worries.
Very cool. I'm an immigrant in Brazil and have just got my first bike. I've been practicing climbs in the mountains were I live. It's insanely steep. I'm not regretting getting my rockhopper after seeing your vid. I was in two minds with it, but am getting used to it not being the lightest bike. Your bars are interesting, I'm considering some tweaks as I wish to put a lot of miles in, would love to head to chile. Anyway I came here via some web research, thanks for the inspiration, peace 🚲
As a Brazilian I should say that the life of truck drivers over here is pretty hard, they get little to no money for their work, and even fight each other for jobs. That's why they drive like crazy and cause many accidents.

I have cycled from Seattle to Miami in 2018. The worst and dangerous State to ride a bike was South Carolina for me. Countless 18 wheeler with wood stems and a thin road shoulder with rumble strips. I was really worried about starting my cycling every day in SC.

I am Brazilian and cyclist since my childhood. Most drivers are poorly educated because there is no education in schools focused on traffic safety, despite being provided by law. Road police enforcement is also inefficient. Anyway, there are a multitude of very quiet and safe roads, off the main routes. Mainly avoid roads without shoulders, use highways or alternative roads. Beware of thieves too, in some regions it is very common. Ride safe!

Wow, very good. I have been watching a few of your videos before I started my trip in 2018. I had to stopped since March 15th., 2020 when I got stuck in Ayacucho, Peru. I went there for nothing on the 2nd time. I have many countries that I will be going next and I hope soon. I have to rebuild one of my bicycle that I was in a real bad accident in the very southern area of Chile. You have been through that area before me. I will keep learning a lot of things from you. Thank You.
As an Aussie cyclist living in Brazil myself the biggest thing I struggle to deal with is how aggressive the drivers (particularly truck drivers) can get sometimes on the road but in any situation off the roads they are likely to be the warmest and hospitable people you'll meet... I feel like in other places aggressive drivers are more likely to also be aggressive people too. Anyway loving all of your content!
Right? I think this has to do with their poor working conditions and wages, they're usually just trying to deliver their stuff as fast as possible to get the next job, bu theyre not necessarily bad people.

First of all, I'm happy none of the truckers caused you any accident. They drive as if the road was theirs and nobody else's. This is the price we in Brasil pay for not maintaning and expanding our railroad system. I myself used to ride on a road that led to the shore and back near my former hometown until the day they simply tookout the road sholder so more trucks could use it and even then it seemed not enough. So my friend and I had to take the wrong lane where there was a road shoulder. For me, who lived in Curitiba, about 100km from the Atlantic Ocean, Iguassu falls is westwards.
My tip for riding in Brasil, daylight blinking lights both in your bike and in your helmet if you can. close pass seem to go down a good 50% with bright lights such as the flareR.
Also your not far from me! if you come to Pato Branco/paraná send me a message, that's your only chance to visit a city named white duck! altought there is not much to do here and HILLS everywhere!
hello from Ireland, Just found your channel. I am looking to buy a bike for touring. So the information you provide in your videos will be invaluable as i look at each one. Your tour of the south east of Brazil brings back many wonderful memories of my several trips to Brazil in the past. I stood at some of the places as you did, watching those magnificent falls. I miss Brazil so much. hope to visit it again one day soon.

I gotta tell you, you are a hard core biker / fun to watch, but I wouldn't want to do it for so long, maybe a trip once in a while, that would fulfill me, lol. hehehe

I have been tour cycling several times in Brazil. And south Brazil is by far the worst for cycling. Should you ever come back, then I would highly recommend the northeast of Brazil. Especially away from the coast. I cycled once from Teresina to Recife and that was a fantastic journey on nice roads, with super friendly people all the way.
Is the south worse in terms of terrain and roads or the way people treated you?
@@marciolprado1 The south is worse when it comes to traffic, first of all. There is a lot of traffic in the south and drivers are more aggressive and arrogant than up north. People wise wise both places were fine.

Well, it is so interesting to me, that you have so much money, buying the Rohloff hub, XT components, etc, you have so much experience, but you still don't know how to keep those truck drivers at a nice distance from you ! Wow. Let me tell you, how and I have almost any trekking through the world experience. Simple : you fasten a plastic, aluminum or any kind of tube on your rack or under the saddle, both ends open, you take a cheap plastic tube for hot water, 80 cm , 100 cm length, you cover it with red and white scotch tape for more visibility, maybe reflective tape, you mount some piece of white or green cloth at the end for even more visibility, stick the long tube in the small tube under your seat from the left side (naturally, depending on the country you are riding in, on which side the drivers are passing you by) and you are ready to GO ! Safe riding and ENJOY ! Free idea from me !
Yeah, I should've innovated more! I've met people who use all kinds of things, from plastic pipes to pool noodles or tree branches to keep drivers at a distance. 😊
You might consider creating a video for the other riders containing some of those ideas, since the passing cars are a quite important part of a road tour. Perhaps we can learn from it and I am very sure, that more people would develop self confidence and follow your example, start riding, make longer tours. Anyway, your videos are just awesome, it's hard for me to stop watching them! You are a very motivational person! Thank you and ride safe!

Very rarely! I caught the boat from Buenos Aires to Uruguay.
Do you Cycling in the night? It's safe ?
I wouldn't ride at night in Brazil due to the heavy traffic, but I did it all the time in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay and felt safe.

Unfortunately, many brazilian drivers are ruthless with cyclists and the roads do not contribute to a safe ride. As always should be the case, prefer gravel roads, make yourself visible and don't take risks. Any accident can be fatal.
You have a better dangerous performance to guide yor bike in brasil. Nerver take on the road brasiliam no one scape tire...
I'm always curious of how you film those wide shorts with you biking away in the sunset? Do you just leave your camera propped up on a ledge and just bike away and then come back for it? I must know!

Have you tried eating vegan in any of the cafes so far or do you just stock up at supermarkets?
In the big towns and cities, I can normally find a vegetarian cafe with vegan options. But I largely prepare all my own food.
Talk about truckers bring ruthless to cyclists, come to India ! They don't just pass too close to you, they honk and scare you to death!

Just skip Brazil. It's not worth it the way it is - so violent on the roads and on the streets. There are wonderful people, but even some of those turn to evil inside their cars and trucks. The good things are outweighed by far by the bad. And a big part of the country is boring and characterless. I've been in Brazil many time and I am sorry to say this, but this country needs deep changes in so many departments. Ride on the Spanish speaking countries - not perfect, but better, more diversity (compared to the boring Brazilian geography and cities all alike for hundreds of kms), cheaper, etc. Good luck!
Unfortunately, here in Brazil, drivers, and specially truckers, are very ruthless towards cyclists. This mostly comes from drivers believing cyclists aren't allowed to be on the roads and the ones that do are breaking the law, which is not true, since legislation allows cyclists to ride any roads. Education regarding this is not widespread, sadly.
