I know its been 2 years but im building a mark 35 a also. Should be a screamer. Im still debating on the stacks but my port job almost dictates i do it. Now i just need a bad ass chopper and rig hand pump trim to be on the water.
My buddy had a '78 Glastron with one on it. Not only did it power the boat with relative ease, that motor was the most reliable thing on the lake by a country mile. Wish it sounded like this one though!
Note that the sound is more like a triple than the usual 6 in-ine. That's because this motor had a split, rearranged exhust system and firing order that made it unique. Fastjeff
One reason why Mercury motors won so many races is because they built their powerheads as higher h.p. motors, bigger pistons/displacement, and then detuned the carbs so that a range of h.p.'s could be made. The only changes were carb bore and jet size! OMC did the same thing, but Mercury sort of "cheated",, by using larger bores and calling them a "10 h.p." for instance, even though the bore was way oversized!
The uninformed talk bad about these motors. Fact is merc. Was the first to get so much power out of so little cubes. When you are on the max of power it cant tolerate any half ass systems. Water pump must be good, carbs must be near perfect. And timing and carbs bettet be exact. When you are dumb enough to run a sputtering motor around with carbs clogged and lean as hell dont blame merc. When the pistons melt. The motors were bulletproof, if yours wasnt, blame your lazyness.
Yes,, #1 and sometimes #2 as well! The engineers should have split the water feed so that water directly from the water pump was sent UNDER PRESSURE up around #1 cylinder area. Gravity is great for keeping our feet tethered to terra firma,,, but not so good for cooling water that has to climb way up the inside of a water jacket!
What all did you do to it so it will spin those RPM's and run so hard? I have a short shaft 150 PT on a G3. It's time for a rebuild so I was trying to learn as much as possible about mods, parts etc.
@Jason It's an absolutely sick engine. The Rudezon is a psychopath car, I'm sure you've seen it (OMC 3.6 V8 in a Volvo with tubbed rear and huge slicks, which of course it can still smoke for a whole block). WANT. I want to use a Mercury 60 degree engine (more compact) on a sport bike...Imagine that sound between your knees... >:o)
Those older Mercury were great for power and speed.... But garbage motors other then that. Their Thunderbolt ignition was the worst engineering design ever invented for outboard motors. The ignition was set-up with a upside down distributor that was a horrible design. And the motor's were all cast iron which was good in case it ran hot and for durability.... But you couldn't run these motors in salt water.
It's good for the young to hear the old Kiekhiefer inline six at full song. Thank you.
Tower of Power. Very few of us old Merc Twister inline mechanics left around. Especially the old belt driven distributor (CDI) ignition
Have always loved the Merks!
Jeez! sent goosebumps right up my arms! I had a mean Mark 35A, but this sound is AWESOME!!!

we run ours in salt, apart from a few tuning issues it still hauls ASS! love these motors.
that is one sick motor, thanks for sharing this video with us...simply awesome. I smell a go-cart build hehehe
It took years for the rest of the industry to catch the "Tower of Power".
"If it aint' black, take it back."

Cool flashback, I built a few of these back in the day. Sounds great!
If that doesn't give you goosebumps you better check your pulse LOL
Love the ole in line"6s"....

Classes were based on displacement, not HP.
GREAT TOWER OF POWER !!! GREAT MAINTENANCE.
Is that a tower of power?........I have Kiekhaffer mercury similar to that.

Sweet ,,, would purr me to sleep!!!
They where the bad dogs of the races years ago before the V6 stuff starting come to life.
That is so cool, it sounds mint
well... that tower was a long way to pump the water up, when ever it burnt down it was always no.1 cylinder

#5
the tittle of this video encouraged me 2 see the movie twister again pretty awkward
Goddamn that thing is a beast. Love mercs! What is the CI on that motor?

farrkkk thing sounds like its ready to blow up hahah
“FAST WILL LAST” and they did
I would think ramming all that air down those velocity stacks would make her run lean, no? Like "bearing-melting" lean

Sigh, PORT AND POLISH PORT AND POLISH. Ducking fumb ars.
This is the ONLY engine that sounds EVEN BETTER than the 2.5 v6's..... O.O

let me guess mercury tower of power?????
damn that things noisy.
forgive me, i know better too, ermmm engine, not motor....i earn 2 tard points for that
I'm bored now

Wow I see @mgj4254 knows what I mean ha ha.
