@@pandapolygon lol money doesn't get you GPUs nowadays, you need luck also
@@rdmz135 agreed. Be aware of the 3080 that arrives in a box, and inside you find a jpeg photo print of the gpu, not a physical gpu! I couldn't believe this when I saw it. People are ACTUALLY charging $400-$800 bucks for an advertised GTX 3080 and in very very fine print somewhere it says the product is "not a physical gpu. It is a jpeg image printed on paper." No refunds bc it's right there. You just have to read EVERYTHING.
@@Sylisgaming10-q7p that is fucking robbery smh
@@pandapolygon if you got a rtx 3090, you either bought it off someone for 2x the price, or got incredibly lucky, or have a bot that scrapes the internet for sales and instantly buys it.
Really great to see the 1060 being featured. Seeing how the new 3000 series is the talk of the town as of late, it's nice to see content creators take a step back and focus on hardware that most people are using. :)
3000 series may as well not exist at this point.
Or a 1050ti
And it’s not most people, alot of people still uses old hardware with the 1000 series
@@melu0o oh sure! you can find many statistics about in the internet. 1060 was in 2021 the most used gpu ^^
now this is realistic, using a 1060 and not those 20 and 30 series cards that are so hard to come by.
It's what the average PC gamer has and we're happy with it. I myself am on a GtX 1650 and it's delivering 1080p60 very well in all games. A little tweaking for maximum visuals and maximum performance.
@@potatotablet727 still rockin some rx 580, gtx 1050ti, and gtx 970 lolol was hoping for 20 series price drops, but nope, world had a other plans lol
@@lazyPawdy not too shabby. wait it out, I'd say.
It's definitely good to see hardware that I own or could afford in the mix. I just wish he didn't use an i9-10900K. Maybe he didn't want any chance of the cards bottlenecking?
But, I think using the old trusty i5-8400 would've provided a more accurate representation. Even a 10400 or Ryzen 5 3600. ...I'm still using an i5-7400.
@@Dick_Valparaiso my exact same setup, 1060 and an i5 7400
I'm still on a 970 so using these settings have really really helped.
Especially the use of fast sync.
Thank you. As a 1060 user still awaiting an upgrade, this video is awesome.
Just the vsync trick alone is enough to fix framerate.
For some reason I can't access Fast Vsync, it seems like it depends on whether or not if your GPU supports SLI.
For me I got a laptop with a 1650 and sadly it doesn't support it.
That trick works with many Unity games! It is quite useful!
@@TilSkywalker does forcing standard Vsync in the control panel work too or does it have to be fast sync? I’m not a fan of the jitter/stutter that comes with fast sync so I prefer standard Vsync + framerate cap + reduced prerender queue as per the blur busters low lag Vsync guide when it works
This game was a real surprise, hope the devs treat it as well as Stardew Valley and Terraria developers do their respective games.
This is such a great game. I've been playing it for over 80 hours with my gf. Built a big compound and a ship sailing the seas and exploring. On of the many things I love about the PC is the Early Access genre, yeah most games aren't that good but there are some amazing ones that pop up here and there. I can get way more immersed in this indie early access game than most AAA big budget titles.

Indeed. And a Patreon subscription is a good way to appreciate the guy as well :)
oh
Although I finally just recently got a 3080, for the vast majority of my life I was stuck with more average level hardware like the 1050ti. I'm sure a lot of people including my past self appreciate these types of videos
I didnt know you guys were going to make a video for me specifically!
Fast Sync will often cause visible microstuttering/jitter though - I’d rather force standard vsync (double buffered or linear triple buffered) via the Nvidia control panel then use a framerate limiter like RTSS to bring down input lag (such as the method from the BlurBusters low lag Vsync guide). That way latency is kept reasonable without the atrocious microstutter jitter that comes from using fast sync.
Or is it that all Vsync forms other than fast sync are broken for this game?
Sees "Worf Moghson" as character name
*Warrior's nod*
That is acceptable.
Good catch, that’s awesome
Fun game. Kind of runs like booty (RTX 3070, 3440x1440). Worth it for the thick trees/grass and pretty water sim. Not going to complain about a three man team not having top-tier optimization.
"Kinda runs like booty" *not going to complain* btw
@@blessedred Fair, poor wording. Should have said "I wouldn't really ask for more out of a team that size"
with their sales they can get some staff for optimization now tho
Tbh having a 3 man team would make optimizations easier imo. A smaller group of people with knowledge of the code versus thousands of people dipping their hands in the Chilli pot, any optimization flaws can be excused though because it's early access and they just trying to prove the concept works.

Do a quick Vulkan comparison for this game.
was this vulkan or dx?
@@JaimeIsJaime idk. My guess is dx since vulkan is brand new with the update
@@devonmarr9872 I think you're right. And usually vulkan performs better on AMD wich is not the case here
Vulkan ran wayyyy better for me. I would get like 20-30 but now I'm at 50-60.
@@kobe1902 For me on i7 3770k and Fury X it ran at like half frame rate 100->50 fps, most games like Doom and Path of Exile get huge boost, but not this one. I hope they will fix it someday so I could crank some setting up.
Love these analyses that you put out, Alex! Always a joy.
Tnx for explaining what the game is. Been hearing a lot about it lately.
Thank you very much. Excellent info.
I can not even begin to thank you for posting this! It's helped me go from struggling to reach a constant 60 with everything down (I was wondering why the game was so hard to run), to a consistent 80 with what you've shown here! The biggest thing was simply changing v-sync from being turned on in game, to changing it to fast from my control panel. (I normally have v-sync on in games as it normally helps my framerate slightly and gives no input latency.
They also introduced a vulcan API mode. Use this to enable the option! This improved my frames by a noticeable amount
-force-vulkan
Yep, same here. Running on a GTX960, over clocked using MSI Afterburner (+90 GPU and +100 memory). Vulkan vastly improved my FPS.
Ok, I am gonna buy this game... It looks really good for what it is. I think the GPU shortage will only help this game's popularity as we are talking about an affordable new game that runs well on older hardware.
Weird there was no mention of terraforming slowing the map to a crawl across the board cause of how it’s saved and kept in memory is super expensive on the engine. Also weird there is no mention of a memory leak cause the game does seem to slow down quite a bit as your play session gets longer.
Tracking load with F2 and seeing instances it has loaded at once also give a huge insight into bad performance as bigger bases can easily get to 15k instances. Also there is some really aggressive loading and de-loading of tile sets ands it’s contained instances that causes a drop in performance when moving between them.
1060 6gb user here, since 2017!! Bad moment to upgrade, particularly here in argentina, imagine if its hard to do worldwide, in this country its far worse!! Thanks for the video!!
It's interesting that they've decided to go back to the GTX 1060 as a reference mid-range GPU. They've been using the RTX 2060 for a while now, I think. For the Nioh 2 video I just watched they tested on a 2060 Super. Not exactly a typical mid-range card in my opinion. It was really a 1070 replacement when it came out and the 20 series cards were never super popular so many people stuck to their older cards and now there's this shortage thing. But, at the same time the 1060 has been getting on in years.
In any case, I'm not complaining. I'm just thinking aloud. I still have a 1060 laptop myself :D
Huh not popular? There were over 25million rtx 20 series cards sold in 2020
Oh Man, you know when you are having trouble configuring a game and then, when you go on UA-cam, Digital Foundry has just released a video covering it? It is the third time that it happens to me, first with Far Cry 5, then Red Dead 2, and now with Valheim.
Welcome to PC gaming :)
I'm glad this video appeared in my UA-cam feed. As a GTX 1060 user with no means of getting an upgrade anytime soon, I thank you for this video.
Yes finally, I was waiting for this!
More videos like this Alex! Really useful and kinda cool if you glue together your optimized settings section with FPS graph comparisons for rx580 and gtx1060.
Hell yeah. I have the gtx 1060 6gb in my laptop. It has been holding up strong for a while. Glad to see I can still get some out of it
People are being happy about 1060 being featured while I can’t wrap my head around that a game like this wants you to have a GPU like 950 at minimum
Playing on a GTX 650 Ti with the settings featured here and runs ok so far.

NVIDIA thinks people on 1060 will finally upgrade to a 3060. Oh wait, there's nothing available.
And graphics in games aren't exactly better since 1060 release. Feels like subscription payment, not hardware upgrade...
@@J0rdan912 Its 30% or more of a bump over the 2060. It's worth the upgrade if people can get one around MSRP.
@@pcgameboy8407 I disagree. 3060 is a bad choice compared to 3060 Ti. Only 12 Gb VRAM on the bright side. But did you need it for 1080p-1440p gaming? Nope. Also, 3060 is just around 70% boost over 1060, which is another bad joke... No, 3060 is not worth it even for it's fair $350 if you are lucky to find it.
@@J0rdan912 A 70% boost is great. Lol Also DF already said they rather use a 3060 to game than the consoles in their review especially when using RT. The 3060 is more than enough for next gen and will no doubt beat the consoles in many games. I do think the 3060ti would be a better choice, but the 1060 to 3060 is a massive jump.
@@pcgameboy8407 70% is not a massive jump for 2 series forward and $350 price. And 3060 is not next-gen ready GPU at all. Of course, if you consider "next gen" as 1440p with barely 60 fps without ray-tracing.
Thanks for still using the GTX 1060!
This game would find a really big audience on console once it leaves early access, especially if microsoft did put skyrim on the timed/full exclusive patch, would be alot of playstation owners needing an itch scratched.
What about Vulkan? Use it or not?
On my GTX 1080, with my settings i'm around 65FPS. Using Vulkan at the same place i was around 73-75FPS
Vulkan gave me some weird input latency or something on an rx 5600 xt, for me it runs way smoother without
Pretty sure this video was created before they added vulkan to the game, or Alex would have definitely covered that part.
I was hovering in the mid 50 and 60s on my 3080 at 4K Max Settings on DirectX 11 but on Vulkan I was getting 80+ FPS pretty consistently, YMMV but you should use it.
thank you for this. What really made the improvement was the vsync and setting the nvidia vsync of valheim to fast. now the game runs to an average of 60fps, compared to an average of 44fps before the change of vsync
Wow!! life savior...Finally fixed my game. all i had to do was getting that 3d thing from the Nvidia option to " Fast "

Does anyone else think that Valheims graphics are perfect? I have zero issues with how it looks texture wise, Because the way it looks brings back so much nostalgia, It tricks my mind into making me think I'm back in 2001 and not a worry in the world just doing my thing. This is amazing, thank you. I want a new you but shortages make it so unrealistic.
@3:50 for settings talk also who has a 1060 with a $450 CPU?

He's just testing with an overkill cpu to make sure there will be zero bottlenecks so they are testing the limits of the graphics only.
Easier to get a shiny new ryzen cpu than a gpu.
Its an awesome game, surprisingly great! Beats most "fancy gfx, hollow game" tripple a games
Please include the GTX 1060 in future videos as well! It doesn't look like anybody's upgrading anytime soon 😂👌
Great video, great instructions! How did you got your fps that high I'll never know. I followed your instructions and matched all settings but yet my game still hovers between 26-40 fps. Running a 1080ti
Is there a difference with the Vulkan mode they just added? Also, if you are looking for higher than 60 fps for higher refresh displays I find that adding these lines to the game's boot.config file helps a lot:
gfx-enable-gfx-jobs=1
gfx-enable-native-gfx-jobs=1
Can wait to pick this up on PS5 or Series X. 💯

I've never seen a unity game without stuttering issues. I wonder why that is.
Same - also UE4 PC ports as well seem to have a lot of issues in my experience (Arkham Knight/The Medium/Outer Worlds all stutter like mad for me and I’ve got a 3900X + 2080 Super).
Genshin Impact was a stutter fest on my PC when I tried it last year, which is also a Unity game.
@jedisaiyan I hear you mate, it seems many UE4 and games have very poor streaming systems and poor multithreading in general (hence the awful stuttering issues).
My “theory” is that the games are built primarily for console unified memory systems and probably few changes are made on the PC end leading to a lot issues steaming and taking advantage of available threads.
Microstuttering is the greatest evil in gaming imo - it’s just awful.
One thing I noticed when testing settings is that my frame times are a little smoother with anti-aliasing turned off, note that I'm playing at 1440p with a GTX 1080.
Thank you for the rundown and recommendation for the games settings. The game now looks better and runs smoother for me. The only stutter I seem to be getting is when the game autosaves.
Same here regarding autosaves, as well as everyone I've played with, including those with high end gpus.
Big Like, thank you for posting this. Wish the UA-camrs that review GTX 3080 and 3090s would put their dicks down and help us out with content like this, since the massive shortage and rampant synthetic scalping is not helping anyone.

fast v-sync doesn't work in vulcan and dx11 doesn't like multithreaded slower cpu's.
Fast sync falls back to normal vsync when playing games using vulkan or DX12, so it should still be better than the in-game vsync setting (Unless the vulkan update fixed the vsync issue)

The game looked really interesting and like something I'd want to play, but then you mentioned early access, I'm done with playing any games in early access it just ruins the experience playing them before they are complete.
These settings are useful for GeforceNow as well.

I appreciate the 1060 being used instead of unicorn cards. But, I don't know how many people are rocking 10-cores with a 1060. We usually see i5-8400/1060 pairings on DF.

I am using his settings and the vsynch hint with a MSI GTX 970 on a 1440p 144 Hz screen and I´m getting 45 fps. Just for anyone curios to know. (Ryzen 7 3700x, 48 GB DDR4 3000)
Thanks for the video Alex!
Gotta love this. I got the game, set my preferences, and have been getting 60+FPS on my 1060GTX. So, I wondered how my settings compared.
Turns out my preferences for turning off stupid and annoying visuals matches what needs to be turned off for performance. Depth of Field, Chromatic Abomination, and Motion Blur are all useless settings that just cost performance.
If anyone is wondering why I have such a hard stance on those. They are technologies which are meant to replicate how a particular *camera* would capture a scene. They are there not to represent the scene as it is, but to represent it as how it would look through the physical limitations of a mechanical camera. Why waste processing time recreating the limitations and artifacts of a camera that doesn't exist?
