I've been playing the game since it launched and I have seen every issue shown in the video and the improvements across different patch releases. 1.03 version fixed a lot of the issues including the lack of rumble feature when using a controller. The stuttering was almost gone but traversing the world still showed performance issues. Patch v1.04 / 5 or 6 (I don't remember) almost solved everything regarding performance, all I noticed was a stuttering lock up when I was assaulting a settlement, and I had to restart the game to fix it, but it only happened once, and after playing for long (days). I'm not sure if it is the same thing that Alex talks about in the video, I mean the camera stutter that the performance metrics didn't capture. But I haven't tested v1.10 because 1.09 works perfect for me, so I leave it there and I'm playing disconnected. But in that case, you can't choose, it must be updated to play online modes. Back to Horizon: Zero Dawn... My setting are similar to Alex Optimised Settings, with the following exceptions: Model Quality: Medium Shadows: Medium Dynamic Resolution Scaling: On Frame Rate: 70 (because 60 presented performance issues when the pixel count dropped, so I changed to 70 and it was solved) Resolution: 3840 x 2190 I use a 60hz TV - HDR Enabled. I appreaciate the 1060 (or was it 1660?) in the testing bench. Once DF starts using only the high end cards I can no longer rely on the "optimal" settings.
@@Banter-vw7ck I know it might sound like BS, but my gaming mates always had the worst issues either on the extreme low end or the extreme high end of the HW spectrum. That is why I always stick with 60ti or 70 cards. Basically the more people have the same stuff I do the better is the optimization. But that is just my theory.
It at least shows they care about the PC community, they could have just left it in a shit state and run all the way to the bank. I'm definitely looking forward to Days Gone which I tried on base PS4 but it was so laggy I had to stop, I think it's going to be incredible at 144Hz with KB+M.
I just got done spending 71hrs to complete this game. This is easily one of my favorite games I have played. Luckily I didn't buy it at release. This was amazing
Played this about a month ago and it was honestly one of the best looking, best running games I have ever played. I was truly baffled by all the negative things I heard because they were seemingly not apparent on my playthrough
I ran into no problems either with a 3600/5700xt system...I know the game does run on AMD GPUs better on average, but I saw no real issues and ended up running the game at 1800p with high settings at around 60 fps.
I'm crying, I am running the game now indeed better on the GTX 1650. This card can handle almost any game, the more if the GPU is overclocked (giving me an extra 8-10 fps) and an undervolted CPU (giving me an extra 2-3 fps). I could barely run the game on 35-40 fps and that was w/even lower settings compared to the optimization settings, now I am getting close to 40-50 fps and it's amazing!
Excellent, I was always hoping you will do an update on Horizon Zero Dawn PC port since Guerilla released update patch 1.07 and I am glad that the video came out finally. Keep up the phenomenal good work guys - I love it.
Bought this game a few days ago and i've been loving it! Runs great on my PC. Pretty much always over 100fps at 1440p Ultra. The port is fantastic now.
The sequel is coming out on the ps4, ps4 pro, and ps5. No visual gap is required, to get more hype on this game they will forsure come out with a ps5 patch, 60FPS native 4k simular to what God of war did!
Exactly, we need the 60 fps upgrade for sure. Hopefully soon, to bridge the gap to the sequel. I tried it the other day on PS5 and it looks beautiful, just that the 30 fps makes it look choppy.
On a small screen it might, but compared to PC on a 55" 4K screen or above, it will literally be night and days difference, not even a contest. Not even the same sport.
I just played through this on pc for the first time recently. I played the ps4 version at a friend's house. It is a night and day difference. Fantastic game I cannot wait for the sequel!
Probably reused the skull/body adult models shrunk down to kid-size to save time on modeling and mocapping. Of course shrinking them down doesn't change the overall skull shape, so it has that weird kid/adult face thing going on.
I got it from steam a few days ago as i finaly upgrded to win 10, i have a 1080ti rig and its running very nicely at 1440p with textures on ultra and everything else on high and it looks gourgous. in my expreance i would say its worth buying now. update 2023 i have a 2080ti and it runs in 4k 60fps maxed out. i would recomend wideing your point of veiw in the settings as the game looks so much better. normaly you would get a fisheye effect when you do this which is why i dont normaly use it but in this game it gives you a more panoramic view which compliments a game like this. i would recomend it big time but would advise watching a few you tube vids to see if its a game for you.
I've also found that this game scales extremely well with increased power limits at least on the RTX 3080. When using the 450watt TDP VBIOS for the EVGA 3080FTW3 Ultra, I saw around a 13% increase in performance. The GPU would pull ~420watts during gameplay. I've found some games are unable to take advantage of the power limit increase and will still not pull higher amounts of power even if the power limit is set higher.
What FPS are you getting on the benchmark? Because my RX 6800 non-XT is hitting 95 FPS at 171 W, I think the peak was 181W, but I'm not sure if that was only inside the game or in the benchmark as well. Just on default, not overclocked. There's also the possibility that my 6800 is a 6900 XT that didn't have all its CUs functional, and was harvested as a 6800 with better than expected TDP.
@@filipealves6602 what resolution are you talking about. And at 4K with the Ultimate preset (everything maxed) I got 84FPS and a score of 15213 with a 5900X + RTX 3080. The benchmark power draw was basically the same as in game.
@@e2rqey sorry, I forgot to mention that, my bad. I also forgot to mention that I made some custom adjustments. I'll need to set it back to Ultra for apples to apples comparison. The resolution is 3440x1440. I prefer higher FPS than 4K, and then I discovered that I like ultrawide a lot more than I ever expected. This game is absolutely great for ultrawide, very immersive. I'll try to rerun my benchmark aligned with your settings. However I suspect that there won't be any change in power consumption, just a drop in performance.
I'll also point out on my 3080 @ 4k and 1440P I noticed zero FPS difference between optimized settings shown here and just setting it to the ultimate preset.
Ofc it does. Letting the card draw more power increase performance. It's not just this game, is a general overclocking rule lmao. It also increases voltages and therefore heat tho.

@@vale_recca does not mean anything. Usually different games made with the same engine are comparable in performance. Been playing on my 3080/i910900K absolutely love this game. It runs at a flawless 4K 60+, game is drop dead gorgeous and the gameplay is insane. Sony needs to release more ps exclusives on the ultimate platform the PC.
The interesting thing is the more PS games to PC, this suggests the HZD to PC experiment has worked as far as Sony is concerned and so they see the value of bringing their other exclusives over if they can be converted at a reasonable cost. The other fascinating thing for me is how they managed to get games like HZD, GoW, GoT and TLOU 2 to run so well on PS4 and the insights DF are getting on the way the various custom engines work to wring every last drop of performance out of that ancient and weak hardware is something I'm looking forward to seeing at some point in the future.

@@MzaM Tbh you have no idea what you are talking about. The base PS4 runs the game at 1080p 30FPS and the PS4 Pro is rendered at 1500p 30fps and is upscaled to 4K. On PC we are talking about native 4K rendering with no upscaling or dynamic resolution. So compared to the PS4, im running the game at 4X the resolution and nearly 3X the framerate. Let me repeat that, *quadruple the pixels* with *3 times the framerate* . If you find that pretty dissapointing then you're an idiot and I have some bad news to tell you about the next-gen consoles. Oh, and that's all basically via brute force as the game was designed from the ground up to run on the PS4. So in a situation where optimization-wise the PS4 has every possible advantage and the PC has every disadvantage, you still get 3X the framerate at 4X the resolution. What a dumb comment 🤣
I started this game a few weeks and I finished with absolutely no issues. Guerrilla have done an amazing job. They are an example of what studios should do with their games.
The best you can expect from console is either visuals, or framerate at the compromise of visuals - you can't have both. The PS5 is simply not powerful enough, its graphics card is already obsolete. Hope never got results - if you want to actually get visuals AND performance, you need to invest in a gaming PC, it's as simple as that. Otherwise stick with consoles, get wallet slapped AND get an inferior product.

Hey Digital Foundry, if you read this could you please take a look back at Red Dead Redemption 2? I know this game is tons of work every time but I'd love to see you guys comments after over a year since the PC release

I just bought this game and it looks like all is fixed. Running RX 6900 Xt, 4K Ultra setting and averaging 90fps. For an old title, the overall graphic and game play is just amazing, one of the best looking title. Glad Sony is releasing this for PC and looking forward to more releases.
I've been playing this on an RTX 3080 and it's honestly hard to believe that HZD was made for the PS4. It would pass for a 2022 release, the asset quality and presentation is incredible.
What about PS5 Native 4K 60fps and Remaster Patch for HZD? Edit: And I still want Gravity Rush 2 & Bloodborne PS5 4K60 FPS Patch! Edit 2: Oh and I don't even have a PS5 yet.
Good video. I personally bought the game in December on a big sale, read the reviews on steam and they already said then the game was by and all fixed compared to launch. Regarding shader optimization. TLDR let it finish before you play. And also if you update your drivers, let it finish again. Long version: I played 25hrs on my 3080 before upgrading my driver. As any game that wants to do shader optimization, like COD. If you update your driver the process will happen again. I skipped it, and loaded the game. I noticed that instead of the normal 5-6 second load-time from scratch (NVME SSD) it now was 30 seconds O_o. Performance was great afterwards. But an hour or so later i had my first ever freeze in the game. Restarting the game and letting shader optimizations finish reduced the loadtimnes back to 5-6 seconds and i played 4 hrs after that without any freeze.
I'll never get the fanboy mindset that could be upset at this... this only builds the player base and increases the eyes on some of their favorite software for future iterations.

i would recomend it big time but would advise watching a few you tube vids to see if its a game for you.

Tbh, 84 fps for a ps4 game running on a rtx 3080 is a pretty poor performance.
@@MrEditsCinema nope. 1% low is 65fps
By the third week, most of the issues were pretty well resolved. I quite enjoyed this game, glad I bought (and played) it.
On sale for $24.99 for black friday
It's why I'm here, dawg!
Wrt the game engine only designed for ps4 the Decima engine was also used for death stranding which runs buttery smooth at high fps on pc.
I just finished it again in the PS5. Too bad there was no 60fps update, but it is very enjoyable anyway.
To me this is one of the best games I ever played, the story and the action is next level.
Oh wow I wanted to see a new coverage form you guys bet didn't went as far as to ask. Thanks for this !
It's time to Review 1.11 version!!!
Death Stranding uses the same engine (Decima)...and that pc port was almost flawless
me who finished the game on 25-30 fps with a 1050ti with constant stuttering and crashes: 👁👄👁
Same here I had a vega 56 on 1440p with 20-30 fps. And now I'm thinking of going back and trying the hard mode with my new 6800xt and 5900x
Same 🤣
Just noticed the thumbnail. Nice touch 😁💕
Hey Alex. When are you returning to gears 5 update on pc with software RT global illumination?
And as usual, great video. Love this game.
Bought this and downloaded it at launch, because it's Horizon and it deserves to be bought. Seems like it's time to replay it.
Still waiting for that patch 1.11 review...
In my region, the complete edition in on sale on Steam for essentially $11 if converted from local currency, which is an absolute banger
Same its like a bit less than $9 so i grabbed it instantly
Not gonna lie this might be the best looking game yet. Looks amazing on pc.
Rdr2 looks better in my opinion
One problem not mentioned in either video was that HDR didn't function properly in the launch version and has also been fixed. If you have a TV or monitor with good HDR this is a game you should absolutely play with it on. It was Sony's original HDR showcase game and it shows. Everything is colorful in a way so the HDR really pops. It looks incredible.
GT Sport, god of war are hdr kings on PlayStation
This game is amazing, I'm really looking forward to its sequel
The game ran fine for me on a RX 5700 XT and a 6800XT build. The differences in performance from a 5700XT to the 6800XT was 200% improvement. Patch 1.10 introduced a bug where it made foliage and trees disappear on RX 5000 and 6000 series GPU's. Guerilla Games ended up releasing 2 hotfixes, one that fixed RX 5000 and another to fix RX 6000 2 weeks after patch 1.10 drop and the game runs buttery smooth. On a 5700XT @ 60fps 1440P maxed out settings and 6800XT 120fps. Good job Guerrilla Games for the quick hotfix.
You mean 100% improvement
I mean to say you get double the vram/performance going from a 5700xt to a 6800xt
For me even the base PS4 version is pretty decent to this day.
@@dayko. It is rock solid 30 on PS4, you'll not feel sick playing it.
@@will891410 not when you need to do quick movements, 30fps isn't fluid enough.
@Digital Foundry
In AMD side things have significantly improved for RX Vega. I have 30% higher frame rate now compared to the launch version.
I'm wondering where the PS5 patch is!
likely ain't coming, to old, it'll be a remaster like spiderman that you will have to pay for lol
@@SoullessKassidy remaster is too far, just next gen update with 60 fps and 4K already enough tho, and i hope it will be free
They better ps5 patch it. If they can waste time porting it to PC they can ps5 patch it
@@HugoStiglitz88 how was that a waste of time?
@@treznopresto4878 Spider-man released after this and was "Remastered"
One of my favorite games I played last year. Even without the most recent updates.
