So Bella who's a teenager falls in love with a vampire centuries older than her, has a baby with said vampire, then her werewolf friend falls in love with her baby?! Man this franchise is all kinds of wrong.
The scene where Taylor Lautner falls in love with the CGI baby is easily one of the cringiest scenes ever put to film.

Real question: since it’s established that the vampires don’t breath 1. Why does Edward feel the need yo breath heavily every time bella gets within five blocks of him and 2. How do they smell blood? Do they absorb smells through their pores?

He doesn't need to and through most of their early interactions he does not. Breathing is instinctive tho, his body WANTS to breathe. Not doing it wont kill him but it is uncomfortable. On top of that its a sense vampires care for more than us, since it alerts them of dangers n stuff (smelling is still connected to their noses tho I think they can "taste the air" on the back of their tongue as well? idk its been 10y+). Once he begins to fall for her, he slowly allows himself a few breaths (in a controlled environment sort of way, he stops breathing whenever he notices it starts to get too much) to get used to her scent. After new moon when he thinks she was dead, he says the allure of her blood no longer actually has a hold on him bc, and I paraphrase, "the agony of your death was too much to bear and my body recoils from doing anything that might bring that sort of pain again". It still burns his throat but he doesnt really waver anymore. Apparently they're still at some level of risk so Bella has to be careful not trigger some sort of predatory instinct.. which she absolutely does multiple times :'D Edward is way more careful than her, she just has a death wish lmao

They actually can breath but it's not needed. If they don't breath it's actually quite uncomfortable since it's getting rid of their predatory scense of smell
I guess "breathing" could be used to calm them down, ease off some stress. And "able to smell blood", I also guess that there nose isn't closed so smell just casually get in their nose and can kinda taste it.

He is probably just breathing to look alive in the classroom full of people. Breathing is just moving a muscle should be a piece of cake to a vampire.

Actually, there is one way Ed could possibly be picking up her scent without breathing: like a shark. Sharks don’t breath out of their nostrils, they either have gills or spiracles (little holes behind their eyes). To pick up scent, they simply move around and let the water currents pass through their nose. Maybe Ed works the same way.
