Valve has been quietly working on a few software projects, including three games using the Source 2 engine. The CS:GO Source 2 port, Citadel, and the unknown entity codenamed HLX. Let's talk about HLX, and what I think it is, based on the information and data mines I have been able to find.

Clearly, the X is the roman numeral for 10. Perhaps Valve has been writing all their numbers in base 3 this whole time.
Or they're just skipping 3 because of all the overhype. And Winamp and .NET Core both skipped 4 so they don't want to be outdone there, so they're skipping straight to 10.

I’m surprised at the longevity of the playability of half life Alyx, we could only conclude it was actually at the level of half life 1 and 2 with time, and now I do believe it stands alongside them in excellence, I still l walk in front of the northern star in wonder, I still feel immersed when I go through the empty destroyed apartments, it still feels like a world lived in… but I would really appreciate if we got more, the quality of Alyx is too big to be left as it is, bring on the episodes/expansions…
They need to crank up the action to HL1 and HL2 levels, HL:A felt subdued, like they were holding themselves back from going too wild because it was also a game for vr newcomers.

@@thenoblepoptart it was definitely slower, but I personally am not huge on action and shooting itself, I enjoy the atmosphere and pivotal sense of loneliness of half life, I enjoyed it a lot in half life 2, and in Alyx it was heightened by vr, I’m ok with the lessened combat…

The barney idea you said in the end sounded exactly the same as when you straight up """"suggested""" the entire plot of HL A back in 2018-2019. And that turned out 100% right.

Also the voice actor for Barney sounded very excited in the interview he did with Tyler. I think it was because he knew that there was more than Half Life Alyx in the making.
Mike Shapiro (the voice of Barney and Gman) did say in an interview with Tyler after Alyx was released and mentioned he was busy working with Valve on another project that fans will be sure to be excited about.
It doesn't have to be groundbreaking, even more of the same is fine for me. Nothing tops HLA in terms of VR (for me)...
I just want jumping and melee combat.

nothing tops HLA in terms of gaming in general. It's a one time masterpiece, we will never have a more immersive game for a long while.

@@Craftypiston Alyx also cut a lot of the features Boneworks had simply because they either were still janky or for accessibility. They want people to be able to play sitting down if they have to, or with one hand for example
I honestly want more vr titles from Valve, what they did with HLA was amazing. It's the only game where i felt trully immersed, exploring the city, fighting the combine with the fun arsenal of weapons provided. Now my quest 2 feels incomplete, after alyx, every VR game just feels incomplete.

On melee and stealth - melee (as revealed by Valve themselves) was worked on for Alyx but in the end was removed, which could explain why melee-related strings exist in the first place. As for stealth, those mechanics do exist within shipped Half-Life: Alyx - you can designate combine NPCs to use a “VR Stealth” mode where a player can peek there head around walls without immediately being detected by the NPC. Hopefully this clears some things up?
These are valid points, but by the sound of things he seems to be implying that these strings are being iterated upon, which why else would a dev do so if HLA is already a finished product?
Theory/Conspiracy; Steam employees make their own HL:3+ variants of games using assets from current projects. They make and play them internally but given they don't have the blessing to make the game, they just share and play them internally among one another. The public sees scraps from these, salivating and hoping, all while internal employees just extinguish their own desires.
That's like me in Roblox studio making games and then abandoning them after playing them in Play Solo lol
I think you mean Valve? And at Valve, their big thing is that for better and for worse "desks have wheels", meaning employees are given great freedom to work on what they want.
If they are putting out work on not unsubstantial mechanics such as melee and stealth (and which likely require extensive playtesting as we've seen from Alyx development) I highly doubt this is just a passion project situation. What's more worrying is if the larger project might live up to Valve's own impeccable perfectionist standards and the devs' passion last until they make a breakthrough, which is what limits so much of their projects and ambitions - but this being built on the backbone of Alyx which laid the heavy groundwork & received pretty dang radiant reception, has much less of a hurdle to overcome after the 20 years silence was already dissolved slightly by Alyx.
Each major Half Life game has had multiple spin off games in the events concurrent or directly after the original title.
HL1 had Blue Shift, Decay, etc. HL2 had the episodes and lost coast..

I think Barney as a double agent could work as a smaller game. Maybe just an expansion, like with blue shift. I wouldn't want too many resources focused on making it THE next HL game. It's a novel idea, but not next gen.
I do want more Half-life expansions like how HL1 did them. That seems to be the case here and hopefully it actually happens. I just want more Half-life content for the love of god
Tyler I just wanted to say - I liked how you quickly re explained what the leak that gave us the info was and why it mattered. I think that is a really good practice to get into because that would make it massively easier to understand when people find that report as your first video about Valve leaks.
I think Half life VR with Barney would be awesome, so much potential with his type of character if u look at what blue shift tried to do with its atmosphere. I hope at least part of it is just few years after 7 hour war and shows how the resistance started out and how Barney was involved in the beginning. 20 years we know so little about.

What is there to speculate? Half-Life Alyx literally changed the ending of Episode 2 and confirms HL3. It sets you up for HL3. The only reason they changed that ending is to line up with the new direction of HL3. It is coming. That is exactly and precisely what Valve is working on. Think about it.. In Episode 1 and Episode 2 you basically have Alyx as a companion most of the time and that is the obvious way Episode 3 would go with Gordon and Alyx traveling together. With the shift to VR, you can imagine how problematic this could become and challenging to develop. HL3 is a VR game and having a companion would be complicated. With the new ending, Gordon is again by himself and now you will have Eli on the radio.

While this sounds reasonable and does makes sense that you see it this way, I do have big doubts, and reason is, HL3 won’t be in VR and it won’t be keyboard and mouse either, it has to be something with new tech, I don’t think valve would sell a title that is soo anticipated but with something that is already got use to with the VR controls, I think it has to be a new tech and only for HL3 as it’s major video game seller.
Just because Alyx set up Half Life 3 doesn’t mean it’s going to be the next game in the series. I would love that but valve doesn’t work like that

I think Valve's still got plenty of good writers. If Alyx and the recent Aperture Desk Job are anything to go by, it seems like Eric Wolpaw and the other writers at Valve have yet to lose their edge.
Marc Laidlaw was heavily consulted on the story writing of Half-Life: Alyx though

With Gordon out of the hands of the G-Man, it might be an excuse to recall another person that he had stashed away back in 1999, Adrian Shepard.
I mean really, his fate was purposefully left ambiguous so Valve could just pull him out of nowhere at any time, and if anything, people have been asking for his return a lot.
I have been saying for months that a natural evolution for HL Alyx would be a stealth game featuring Barney.
I hope that’s what HLX is.

I love the idea you suggested at the end, sounds like something valve would do, and im assuming this comes from some kind of insider info, because he have games about gordon, and alyx, and the last main character (that would be fun to play) hasn't had his own game since blue shift, and it could fill out a lot more story, and not just be a lazy sequel that says "oh look they got alyx back and stuff the end", it could explain a lot, like how barney and kliener ended up in city 17, and how barney got a job with the combine, and maybe even a after credits scene where he meets gordon at the train station.

Honestly, if Valve were to continue making smaller spin-offs of their main series like this, and experimenting with interesting mashups of genres and VR like they're currently doing, I'd be pretty happy. I know it's going to be a long time before we get any true sequels, like Portal 3, Left 4 Dead 3, or god forbid, Half Life 3, but having these really cool games in-between definitely makes the wait more bearable.

Valve like to make versions of games they are currently playing, and I bet they are working on their own version of a high steaks looter shooter like escape from tarkov. It's right in their style, and fits a lot of the leaks we've heard about.

"Half-Life: Barney" could very well be happening next, but maybe this is the new "generation" of Half-Life games coming into play.
The Half-Life 2 episodic releases were fantastic, and I think Valve wants to make Alyx and the next potential games just as groundbreaking.
What could very well happen in the near future is HLX being Half-Life: Barney, and then a new project appearing that eventually becomes something like Half-Life: Eli or Half-Life: Judith.
These series of games, all based on the same engine and bringing new concepts and mechanics to each game, would culminate in a sort of HL3-like release; i.e. Half-Life: Gordon, that would encompass all of the mechanics introduced and bring a heavy plot-based end to the series.
I'm not saying this will happen or even that anyone at Valve has thought about this, but I think this would be a very good and tumultuous way to go with Half-Life. Here's hoping.

I could see that being a Half Life game. A VR player takes the role of Combine Overwatch while a bunch of keyboard and mouse players, playing as resistance fighters, sneak around the map trying to avoid detection and complete objectives.

COMPLETE OTHER LEVEL OF SPECULATION: if the new thing is gonna be about barney infuriating the combine could this be a new series of half life games that started at hl alyx and slowly goes through all the major half life characters as prequals but also slowly progresses the plot of half life 3 (just as hl alyx did) and valve would keep doing this until it leads to half life 3?
I was thinking something similar. Even Citadel, if it has a campaign of any kind, could do this. Honestly would be a great secondary to an actual HL3. It puts off the unmatchable hype of a game with that name, while still adding to the story and taking it in new, interesting, nonlinear directions.

Because I care nothing about Citadel, but this project's existence is making me super excited! Like, I need more Alyx. Or, you know, need H-L 3!
If they are going to do a standalone headset (which I feel like Steam Deck is also an experiment for that - but doubt it'd come out this year, might not even come out next year, again due to Deck. Not sure if Valve could cater for 2 major Hardware releases at once), I think H-L3, or some other H-L single player experience will be released with or around that headset's release window imo.
I hope we get that PSVR port of Alyx
