If it didn't have the stupid knockdown mechanic when grappling, the fight would be excellent. Some tips for peeps who haven't beat it yet: -Don't grapple unless it's doing its "ultimate move" or doing a sweeping ice breath. Grappling at these times is an easy way to avoid damage. When doing the "ultimate," wait with tenderizing a few seconds so you come down right after the ring of ice explodes, to avoid getting hit. -Don't panic roll. Velk has some really clear telegraphs, and you always have room to roll to dodge his nice ice waves. -Don't spend too long in his front, if he does the slushy ice breath you'll get stuck. it comes after certain moves so learn when he's gonna do it. -SERIOUSLY. DON'T GRAPPLE HIM. Sorry, fellow lance mains. (Wallbashing is fine, just be quick.) -Learn the timing on his attacks. I've always found Velk to be one of the easier ones to i-frame. Good dodges and positioning can allow you to counterattack his tail whenever he thrusts. -Fuck iceblight tho srsly
@Shad The knockdown literally locks certain weapons (e.g. lance) out of some of their core moves, and there's no real counterplay to it. So instead you just switch to a weapon that doesn't rely on grapples, or you just continue on with narrowed down tactics. As for iceblight, Kira, yes, blight res / crisis / ice res is a thing, duh. That is what's meant by "fuck iceblight:" that you should do something to avoid it. Have a bit more of a sense of humor.

Literally me, went into the fight thinking it’d just be a really strong Velkhana with her normal moveset, proceeded to get my ass absolutely handed to me, with a few randoms.
That's the whole point, if you're nothing without fatalis armor, then you are already a fatalis, and thus the legend is revived. (for those of you who still don't know, anyone who wears Fatalis armor for too long will eventually become the very monster they slew, thus the reason fatalis is immortal and indomitable, for you cannot kill death, there is no victory to be had against it)
Element resist boost, blight resist, blight negate. Gain about 30 all element resist and make team easy cheese AT Velkhana. Everytime i use my safi dragon HH with node element, my team never take more than 75 damage
@@6powersofM with fatty armor Divine blessing 5 saves you from a lot of those one shots. 60% reduction at 40% activation chance coupled with evade window makes any carts that happen your lack of skill. It still has a stupid high HZV weakness of a face, you just gotta know when your openings are
Upright Velkhana just looks damned awesome. Like, dragons themselves are intimidating, but imagine one rearing up like that into a VERY human stance, and the entire combat shifts because that's when you realize its front paws have THUMBS and it can now grab and toss things and interrupt in new ways.

Even non AT felt like a dance with IG, and I loved it. It was such an awesome dance/fight against AT. I didn't fail but came close a few times. The flurry of ice attacks was a nice contrast to the flurry of flames from Fatalis.

Honestly, I brought a gunlance into the fight, so I was up close and personal with AT Velkhana, while watching my entire team was more like this animation. I did it with 3 pieces Alatreon, the scarf, and the gloves from safi. Safi gunlance too. This was honestly another awesome fight though, as the new moveset really changed how the fight needed to be done. Awesome animation NCH.
It's nice to revisit this now that Velk is in rise. I remember. I had to put away my fatalis set and crack out a combination Frostfang and Velkana set to abuse coalescence, punish draw and ice resistance.
Surprising, that damn 30 minutes kept getting me (because I tried to beat her solo) . Plus, the amount of times I clutched her and she did that stupid charge attack, I swear to god
Actually somehow first tried this with switch axe and oml it was so intense and felt so good. Single funnest fight I've had in monster hunter. I love how they actually made a super difficult fight that's just super fast paced and requires intense perseverance. Some people complained about the difficulty, but I think it's perfectly fine, especially since you can, ya know, just not do the fight if it's too tough for you. Having a one or two super tough fights for the people who actually want a ton of challenge is fair. Also finally, something that isn't braindead to use Lance on. I actually feel good fighting this thing with Lance because I can't just cower behind my shield and counters. Evade Lance ftw. I really hope in future monster hunter games they make lance have a higher skill cap and actual risk involved. Maybe being able to switch between a defensive mode and a high risk offensive mode to reward actually taking risks. I love Lance so much but it's such a shame that it's low damage and zero risk.

fun fact about fatalis armor: it has eye slots for your own eyes its just that the fatalis eye on it is so prominent you wont notice it until you look closer under it.

Hammer is like ultra instinct in this fight because velkhana is constantly making ice patches that cause you to do hammer slide which allows you to aerial hammer her into oblivion because most of her attacks are very low and really only punish you if you are standing still
that's kinda debatable, imo fatalis is harder since he is harder to i-frame compared to velkhana and velkhana doesn't have any DPS attack (fatalis cone attack, and fire shower) so you can't just blindly attack without planning your next move in case he use DPS attack, while velkhana worst case you just get knocked and you can timed your wake up
@@istheworldreal fatalis is way easy to i frame bro, this is mainly cause i play dual blades and insect glaive and dps checks dont not play into how hard a monster's fight is. theyre a mechanic(that honest overstayed its welcome in mhw) and mind you we are talking AT velk, not regular she doesnt get staggered or anything like that, weres you can stagger fatalis, fatalis whole fight in world is just, hey i can hit you real hard in a wide manner if you arent using a evasive or lightweight weapon, or the wall(lance) velkhana AT requires you to be thinking so much since alot of her moves insta shot
Use Dual Blades. The little ice walls she spams everywhere lets you use Heavenly Blade Dance constantly. I used Divine Blessing 5 and Evade Window 5 for comfort before throwing in dps skills and I still did over 1k damage per HBD.
Funny thing is that this kinda looks like rookie normal Velk mistakes, too: No ice resistance, no one with a guard up build to be able to stay close despite the ice walls. Even with counter-building, normal Velk isn't a punk... I only expect that's more true for the AT version. It's just funny to me that they make the same mistake as public players on normal Velk. Don't get me wrong, having a full Fatalis set gets mad props from me, but it also shows how necessary it is to give the individual fight respect even with that in mind.
Kinda late but… I was doing the quest waiting for people to come help me, nobody came and I ended up soloing it… That was one of the most glorious moment of my hunter’s life
Hey, could be worse, could be me. I havent even fought frostfang yet. Not looking forward to it, either. Besides the elders in IB, Barioth is the one that gave me the most trouble. Dunno why, just does. I can't ever seem to get his attack patterns down like I can with all the others, elders and variants alike.

If you're on Xbox, I can help you with Namielle. Fought that one a few times. Assuming its not tempered. Im no even MR50..
@@quack_foolery2282 @Josh Wicken I mean I'm stuck with Namielle armor. Blight immunity and defensive skills are fine, but my damage seems to lack at times. I'm actually stuck with Raging Brachydios (have yet to try Rajang) and its extended hitboxes and undodgeable running hook. Those 3 are just big bosses. Kulve Taroth is full of empty lobbies. Safi Jiiva seems to be the same.

As for the variants, I've just gotten into them. Did the shatterhorn quest and I believe Rajang is next. I use the Swax, so it'll be a fun fight. Got me Teostra's Hellebard after hours of fighting MR BoomLion. As for armor, I did the movie event quest, and that's what im running. Best I can run.
I have soloed both Fatalis and AT Velkahna with Great Sword and on god probably my two favorite fights in the game. The feeling of getting your positioning right is magical
Still haven't beat it solo with GS because im not that proficient with GS to begin with, but had fun with my main sns and spread LBG and bow, its beautiful.

It's nice to revisit this now that Velk is in rise. I remember. I had to put away my fatalis set and crack out a combination Frostfang and Velkana set to abuse coalescence, punish draw and ice resistance.
Surprising, that damn 30 minutes kept getting me (because I tried to beat her solo) . Plus, the amount of times I clutched her and she did that stupid charge attack, I swear to god

Actually somehow first tried this with switch axe and oml it was so intense and felt so good. Single funnest fight I've had in monster hunter. I love how they actually made a super difficult fight that's just super fast paced and requires intense perseverance. Some people complained about the difficulty, but I think it's perfectly fine, especially since you can, ya know, just not do the fight if it's too tough for you. Having a one or two super tough fights for the people who actually want a ton of challenge is fair.
Also finally, something that isn't braindead to use Lance on. I actually feel good fighting this thing with Lance because I can't just cower behind my shield and counters. Evade Lance ftw. I really hope in future monster hunter games they make lance have a higher skill cap and actual risk involved. Maybe being able to switch between a defensive mode and a high risk offensive mode to reward actually taking risks. I love Lance so much but it's such a shame that it's low damage and zero risk.
I love the AT fight. It's rough and a bit painful but well worth the label of AT elder dragon.

fun fact about fatalis armor: it has eye slots for your own eyes its just that the fatalis eye on it is so prominent you wont notice it until you look closer under it.

Hammer is like ultra instinct in this fight because velkhana is constantly making ice patches that cause you to do hammer slide which allows you to aerial hammer her into oblivion because most of her attacks are very low and really only punish you if you are standing still

that's kinda debatable, imo fatalis is harder since he is harder to i-frame compared to velkhana and velkhana doesn't have any DPS attack (fatalis cone attack, and fire shower) so you can't just blindly attack without planning your next move in case he use DPS attack, while velkhana worst case you just get knocked and you can timed your wake up
@@istheworldreal fatalis is way easy to i frame bro, this is mainly cause i play dual blades and insect glaive and dps checks dont not play into how hard a monster's fight is. theyre a mechanic(that honest overstayed its welcome in mhw) and mind you we are talking AT velk, not regular she doesnt get staggered or anything like that, weres you can stagger fatalis, fatalis whole fight in world is just, hey i can hit you real hard in a wide manner if you arent using a evasive or lightweight weapon, or the wall(lance) velkhana AT requires you to be thinking so much since alot of her moves insta shot

Use Dual Blades. The little ice walls she spams everywhere lets you use Heavenly Blade Dance constantly. I used Divine Blessing 5 and Evade Window 5 for comfort before throwing in dps skills and I still did over 1k damage per HBD.
I felt it was fitting to clear this for the first time using the regular velkhana set.
I want to point out, the, what I assume what is the, longsword user was holding their own for a while. So, I think they deserve to keep the armor

Funny thing is that this kinda looks like rookie normal Velk mistakes, too: No ice resistance, no one with a guard up build to be able to stay close despite the ice walls. Even with counter-building, normal Velk isn't a punk... I only expect that's more true for the AT version. It's just funny to me that they make the same mistake as public players on normal Velk.
Don't get me wrong, having a full Fatalis set gets mad props from me, but it also shows how necessary it is to give the individual fight respect even with that in mind.
Kinda late but… I was doing the quest waiting for people to come help me, nobody came and I ended up soloing it… That was one of the most glorious moment of my hunter’s life

Hey, could be worse, could be me. I havent even fought frostfang yet. Not looking forward to it, either. Besides the elders in IB, Barioth is the one that gave me the most trouble. Dunno why, just does. I can't ever seem to get his attack patterns down like I can with all the others, elders and variants alike.
I'm stuck with Namielle. The sieges, save alatreon and fatalis, are dead.
@@EmperorXaozx Have yet to take on a Siege. Unless you consider Behemoth, Xeno and Shara to be sieges. I was carried through Behemoth by a pair of guys who killed him in the second area. If you're on Xbox, I can help you with Namielle. Fought that one a few times. Assuming its not tempered. Im no even MR50..
@@quack_foolery2282 @Josh Wicken I mean I'm stuck with Namielle armor. Blight immunity and defensive skills are fine, but my damage seems to lack at times. I'm actually stuck with Raging Brachydios (have yet to try Rajang) and its extended hitboxes and undodgeable running hook.
Those 3 are just big bosses. Kulve Taroth is full of empty lobbies. Safi Jiiva seems to be the same.
@@EmperorXaozx ah, yeah, it sucks, but its likely due to Fatalis.. ill run a siege, if I can actually find a group to run them with. I adapt pretty quickly. As for the variants, I've just gotten into them. Did the shatterhorn quest and I believe Rajang is next. I use the Swax, so it'll be a fun fight. Got me Teostra's Hellebard after hours of fighting MR BoomLion. As for armor, I did the movie event quest, and that's what im running. Best I can run.

I have soloed both Fatalis and AT Velkahna with Great Sword and on god probably my two favorite fights in the game. The feeling of getting your positioning right is magical
Still haven't beat it solo with GS because im not that proficient with GS to begin with, but had fun with my main sns and spread LBG and bow, its beautiful.
