I told my wife we should retire in Oatman. I could be the donkey cleaner upper. It would be perfect. My current job is kinda crappy.

When I lived there, that was actually a fairly good job. My friend Gino used to get $1 a day from each shop, about 35 in all, and took about an hour, first thing in the morning, before the sun or anyone else but me was up...the place where I cooked the was only breakfast in town. Gino would also clean the streets throughout the day when there were events in town with lots of people and trash. I have actually covered for him occasionally, so he could have a day off once in a while!

The U.S. has the most amazing atmospheric places and scenery. The out of the way rural places were just wonderful and I met so many friendly people. The driving was also much less stressful than here in Europe.

Russ, could you imagine what it was like driving vehicles on that road back in the days when they were stick shift, no power brakes or steering. Miners are definitely a special breed. Pretty country.

The Oatman Hotel was the honeymoon stop for Clark Gable & Carol Lombard after their wedding In Kingman 3/18/39. Gable often frequented the area and played poker with the miners. The town is named after Olive Oatman an Illinois girl captured by Indians in 1851 during her pioneer family’s journey westward and she was forced into slavery, later traded to the Mohave Indians & finally released in 1856 at Fort Yuma Arizona . In 1921 a fire destroyed most of the buildings but the Oatman Hotel built in 1902

For those of you out there old enough to know Paul McCartney, he and his then girlfriend, later wife, took a cross country road trip in 2008, the year Paul turned 66. People could not believe it when he and Nancy visited museums, pulled into gas stations and did normal touristy things, including camping one night. Lots of references to the trip on Google. I remember it getting on my local news---which is exactly what the two of them did not want.

When I lived there, my friend Geno did that. He got $1 per day, per shop, and there were approx. 30 shops. It took him less than an hour very early in the morning, and he did a very good job. It paid him over $30/hr. He also did all sorts of odd jobs, and and was always busy...and he made better money than almost everyone else in town, including the business owners. Seems to me it's good work, if you can get it! LOL!

I was told the mine(gold) was shut down, cost to much to dig it out. Also the name of Oatman came from a long old story about a girl that was kidnapped by the indians. Don't think she ever was in Oatman though. Also you need to visit Julian Cal. It is near San Diego. Also the donkeys are wild. They leave every day then return in the am. Always wondered where they go at nite..
