Christie's idea really was an ingenious one. The biggest disadvantage of tanks even today is their short service intervals due to to immense amount of wear placed on the tracks and drivetrain. A tank that could skip being moved long distances by a tank hauler could have a huge advantage on the 20th century battlefield. Unfortunately the convertible tread design of the prototypes had severe weight limitations, and neither the tracks nor the road wheels performed optimally on either terrain.
