Christie's idea really was an ingenious one.
The biggest disadvantage of tanks even today is their short service intervals due to to immense amount of wear placed on the tracks and drivetrain. A tank that could skip being moved long distances by a tank hauler could have a huge advantage on the 20th century battlefield. Unfortunately the convertible tread design of the prototypes had severe weight limitations, and neither the tracks nor the road wheels performed optimally on either terrain. Christie's innovations still live on to this day in other forms though.

Clearly the j walter christie tank. The basis for the Russian BT and T34 tanks.
The BT even kept the option to convert between tracks and using the wheels without the tracks on the road for the large speeds demonstrated here. They dropped that feature for the T34, probably because Russia didn't have many roads that were good enough.
Still arguably the fastest tank ever built.
