One recommendation: When working around CRT and analog board assemblies, wear shoes and socks, please. If the floor or room is humid or saturated with moisture and the circuit has high voltage circulating, you could get a nasty shock. Especially worse, if you have both feet on the floor and both hands in the high voltage area in the rear of the compact Mac.
@@MacintoshLibrarian Just a little PSA from someone with experience in high voltage and high current potentials. It takes as little as 50mA (milliamps) to cause your heart to go into fibrillation. It's not the volts that kill, it's the amperage. You just want to avoid any path going across your heart; so both arms, for example. Don't work on high power circuits with both hands; put one of your hands in your pants pocket or place it behind your back.
Back in 1995 I did work experience in a Mac store. The technician I worked with got a shock from a CRT while we were servicing it! He was fine though. As payment I got a co-processor card for my Mac IIsi. Looking back now I realise that it never worked because I never knew about drivers and I don't think the technician I got it off knew either.
I found your channel last saturday and fell in love with your style of editing and videos in general! One of the best edutainment type channels. This could be a tv-show in the 1980s-1990s and it would have a biig audience imo. ❤
I only found your channel recently, but I love your content! It's great to see other women doing cool retro tech stuff. I mostly just play Escape Velocity, but I have a win98 PC I built to play old games on old hardware.
Love it! I did a 640x480 mod on a Colour Classic back in the early 2000s using I think that same guide. Much lower resolution photos back then though and info was sparse!
Nice work! I always wonder how someone figured out how to modify the sense codes and voltage! very smart people out there :) You were on the ground floor of CC modding!
@@MacintoshLibrarian I was putting a G4 Cube into the Colour Classic case and I did the mod to wire up a VGA connector (ie: literally wires to a VGA connector hahaa) I could hook the cube to. Of course it was terrible with a lot of noise so in the end I got a 10" VGA POS (Point Of Sale) monitor and jammed it in the case and used it instead - much better!
Great job! You made the right call when isolating that pin with the dremel tool. Scoring the circuit board with a thin-bladed instrument wouldn't give you the profound isolation you'd ideally want without having to make 4,000 passes. You want some space between that pin and the copper pour that it was (once) connected to. Keep up the good work!
When I was a kid it wasn't cool to be a computer nerd.. I remember riding my bike to MicroCenter and wanting to buy a Color Classic so bad with my paper route money. After looking at it I was kind of put off with what you got for the price and remember thinking that lack of 640x480 was going to kill it. My parents wouldn't let me spend that much money so I got nothing and liked it! Well back to the library computers for me. I did get a 386sx-25 at the end of my 8th grade year.
It’s great to see you and Maccy making Color Classics usable by performing that important upgrade. Now it’s time to take it to the next level with Kay Koba’s Spicy O’Clock! :-)
Did you cut the trace for pin 20? It didnt show you making a cut in the video. I have the same revision board as you do. I'm having issues with this modification
Love the videos, stumbled upon your channel a few months back. I was only 5 when I saw my dad's Apple 2 but it still brings back great memories. Are you glasses meant to be that low? Personally I couldn't stand if my classes were on the tip of my nose xD
Hi! You put way more effort into working on a Color Classic than I ever have, I actually ended up passing mine on to another collector as I really wasn't comfortable working around the high voltage circuitry after getting zapped on a SPARCStation power supply. They are nice machines aesthetically, but not the easiest things to work on. If you don't mind a suggestion, could you implement a MacintalkPro voice for the SE/30 character? Would be very fitting!
Would be cool to see you also tackle the takky mod (putting a performa 6200/6300 logic board and connector inside a color classic chassis) with one of the other color classics, but that in and of itself is really daunting.
I have Mac Color Classic... nice compact Mac to play with... wish I had the time and skill to do the mod to increase its resolution... also wish I had kept my other compact Macs, like Mac SE, SE/30. Alas.
@@MacintoshLibrarian Because I like to imitate what I've seen other people do, I found a Mac Pro shell on ebay. 😆 Thanks for the idea! Also, the whole video was fantastic, between this video and JDWs video series, I really want to track down a logic board to do a mystic upgrade now!
How long does it take you to animate. Also for shots of maccy moving about I SINCERELY hope that's an empty shell. I remember mac classics/128's being a bit on the hefty side.
impressive, retro games were much better and I found the speed to turn on impressive, I love your videos, what area did you graduate in to be able to work with cards safely like this? I love it but I don't open anything for fear of blowing everything up lol you do magic with macintosh, great video
Dear Ms. Fox, My name is Kelly Zapien and I would like to introduce myself I am currently 14 years old and I live in a small town called Newman in California. I have been doing National History Day for four years going on my fifth year. I have a strong passion for the competition. I’m doing a Macintosh project this year I would like to interview you. I am so glad I stumbled upon this channel, never seen a girl who's into retro macs
Faith in humanity restored

I just stumbled upon your channel. This is amazing in presentation. It reminds me of PBS shows of the 80s and very early 90s. Awesome work!!
0:13 The attention to detail of the laptop's reflection on Maccy and the vase, showing laptop usage, is impressive.
Your videos are so well made! Love it 👏
I love these old Macs, It really is amazing to see how open and serviceable Apple used to make their products.
Just found your channel. Your Mac collection is so cool. Apple IIc with LCD...just wow!
The Librarian and Maccy are back! Yay!!
This gives me ASMR vibes for some reason
Your channel has a huge potential. I would like to see any retro tech from you not just macintoshes
Yes pleeease!!

Great video. I had heard about the Mystic mod but never looked into it. Thanks for documenting the process!

@@MacintoshLibrarian Far from it! And I'll wear that moniker proudly none the less.
You are great! Just watched this video, funny, and highly instructive. You should be on tv
Hakko is an excellent soldering station. I own the older Hakko station and the newer one like yours.
If my research is correct, the 575 motherboard normally comes with a non-FPU CPU, so that had already been upgraded on that board.

I can see the insides! ARGH! Made me laugh and think of Bicentennial Man where he saw the inner me.
Maccy realllly loves that movie!
I was not expecting Chex Quest. Well played...
This was an interesting and fun video and I'm not a mac guy at all.
Very good production.
Great video, I didn't know that the the test pattern download existed, I can use that. Hi Maccy!
Glad it was helpful!
Great Video Kate That is A Fantastic Upgrade

I like how Chex Quest is a G rated version of Doom
I didn't realize my color classic ii ran Indy Jones at a reduced resolution. Still looks good!
Great work! Love the characters!
That's amazing that you have 3... (insert the Counts voice) 3 Color Classics Ah Ah Ah 🙂

I'm so glad young people are playing with old apple tech. I used to do this like 20+ years ago.
Was there any calculus as to which of the Classics you used for the Mystic upgrade, or did you simply pick one from the pile?
