      1: the blue is lovely,

      3: hope she appreciates the work involved
      4: nice one Mike 👍

    This is what Art is all about Mike. Pushing the limits both with the materials you use & pushing your own limits. You are an Artist in turning. I personally am not a huge fan of resin but in this project it really works so well. Your colour choices for the resins was perfect with your selection of cones. The 'stepped' exterior turning was a bold step, but it worked so well on this piece. Add a great finish & your wife now has a beautiful vase. Cheers, Don from South Australia.

    • @calmwoodcreations3709
      @calmwoodcreations3709 Місяць тому

      Interesting "fact". However, the sequioa cones just down the street from my house don't agree. I think you meant that the seeds won't germinate unless exposed to fire. They come out of the cone fairly easily.

      @calmwoodcreations3709 you may be right. I knew fire needed to be involved, I just assumed it was to open the cone. Those seeds must be tough! Lol

    • @calmwoodcreations3709
      @calmwoodcreations3709 Місяць тому

      @@kristikey8320 If memory serves, the seed has a waxy coating that requires quick, intense heat-- not the flame, itself --to melt it so moisture becomes availabe for germination. When fire seasons are "normal", the forest floor is covered with dead needles and duff which will burn quickly. Sequoia tree bark is very thick and not very flammable, so the trunk is protected. The branches are too far above the ground to catch fire. The fire clears the soil so the seed can sprout. Nature has always fascinated me!

    Hi Mike. The vase is really nice looking. I love the way the glass liner just floated down. That's a very close tolerance you cut in there. Nice work. Ahh, no good deed goes unpunished as they say. I've had a time or two like that & sometimes it's just best to give it up for the day and start over the next morning. Reading your replies below & you're absolutely right when you say "There's no reason to get mad or angry." Stuff happens. I know your wife will love it. I'm currently turning resin blanks with flowers in them & the maker suggests a frequent application of thin CA glue to solidify the flowers as they get exposed when turning. It helps prevent divots and blow outs. It also fills minor pits in the flowers and stems that occur. Take care and keep turning. Bill Riley

    That IPA moment, when the true nature of the piece and the idea is revealed, was amazing.
    Is it any kind of fun when glass smashes and pieces fly off the chuck? It all makes dramatic and interesting content, and I guess life isn't always sweet and perfectly polished and this is a lesson in enjoying the journey. Nothing phases you Mike.... on camera anyway.
    Artists get into "the zone" this is a sacred place where the creative energies flow and the world around just blurs out, time has no meaning. This is where the raw creativity is flowing and nothing else matters; this is when going to the supermarket at 18:00 on a Sunday seems to be OK.

    • @MikeHolton
      @MikeHolton  Місяць тому +1

      Haha thanks my friend, things can phase me but not when related to woodturning, I do this for fun, a way to release my imaginations. If something goes wrong I just carry on and solve the problem. The flow state is an amazing feeling, I have studied it a lot with my day job trying to show my students ways they can induce it in the games they make.

    The guy from Sprague turning uses an electric pan. Simply throw the glew sticks in the pan and melt them. Dip and stick what ever your gluing. I'm sure it's doesn't work for every application, but certainly would help with the frustration.

    An absolutely marvelous piece, Mike. I know with fiberglass yacht molds we used to apply a good coat of car wax to the mold. You know, the rub on out of a round tin and buff off type. Then, they used to crack the boat out of the mold with the airline like you do. It’s just a thought, but it might work with your resin molds, especially those ones you’d like to try and keep. 😃 Keep up the excellent work.
