Wow thanks man, I'm a descendent of Wendish immigrants who set up shop in South Australia in the mid 19th century. Unfortunately their culture was subsumed by the German immigrants who travelled with them, and they didn't make much effort to preserve their culture like the dudes in Texas did. Really fascinating to hear about my ancient family.
The same happened to many here in Texas.... I was always so confused by the seemingly out-of-place "German" noodles my grandmother would put on the table on holidays... come to find out, it wasn't a German tradition at all.... it has been incredible to learn the truth. I'm so proud of this heritage.
A video about Celtic paganism would be a much needed informational video on UA-cam. It's actually hard to find out about the pantheon/s and creation story.
This is one of your most interesting videos I am very much looking forward to taking notes so I can further look up many aspects of this folklore mythology and customs please keep up the good work

Ashes of the dead were placed in burial urns and these often had a drilled hole in them to allow duša to leave that urn once the final act of ritual burial was over (probably). There was (and still is) an event called tryzna which was a feast over the grave site or near it. The point of it was to celebrate the one who was buried and talk about him/her (most likely to appease the spirit so it can leave the body/urn in peace happy to know it was loved/respected).
5 am here in Ontario. Good watch before I'm off to work. 13th warrior is my favorite movie. THEY THINK THEY ARE BEARS! Here in Canada the Wendigo is an invisible forest spirit that takes control of the minds of men in isolation driving them to become cannibalistic and often eat their families. Usually most active in the winter months. Some Wendigo hunters have been known to have killed up to 40 of these beasts. But hunters were jailed when Europeans discovered the wendigo was just disturbed cannibalistic human men and the Wendigo hunters were essentially murderers. Very small piece of our Native mythology.
Makes sense, one ethic group are policing their own kidnappers and murders and another ethic group comes in and puts and end to the native police force.
idk m8, id have no sleep loss if happened to end a pedo, nor a cannibal, wendigo must kill/murder yes? to be cannibal? or they dig up an eat spoiled meat? sorta doubt that . so.....good community policing
I have a translation of Beowulf by Tolkein which has interesting notes that he apparently used in lectures at Oxford. My Scottish ancestry reckons that you should do a video about red haired Scots Vikings and I know just the right person to host it ;p
After rewatching this video, I came to think about time. It seems the ancestors thought of time as circular, but I the modern world, we think of time as lateral. When did this happen, where did it start and why? My guess was that it was the invention of the clock that had a lot to do with it. Funny enough, old clocks are circular, and our measurements are of a circular value. The motion of the heavens is, of course, circular. Any thoughts, oh great sage?
Absolutely brilliant, what you brought here👌👌. I'm from Slovakia and I have been always interested in history of my country (and others). But from this one video I got more information and much more better insight into the spirituality of Slavic tribes, than from all Slovakian relevant information sources together during all my life (and I have read a lot). What is actually shamefull to our scientists. Thank you very much, keep doing this great job👍💪👏.
Wow, thank you Arith! I have been researching this for a while, and you just gave me a huge amount of info in this episode. Thank you, thank you, thank you!!! Brate!!!
I think we all have the right to express what we believe, but it's important to make choices when the vision is wrong, or when someone tells a different and intelligence point of view, and help us to see the other side! Congratulations Mr Arith, and thank you once again for your lessons and intellectual speech! Love your vídeos, just great!
very interesting video Arith great to see how other cultures belief systems stack up .......love the idea of seeds mixed in with the ashes of the dead to start re-growth , ( I would like that done with mine plus a yew berry and beech seed :) ) always love to hear about the spirits of the land , here in Cornwall we have land wights who protect the land and burial mounds , also Piskies a sort of elf and Knockers who dwell in the mines to protect the ore .
Fascinating stuff mate. Never knew that much about Wendish folk lore and their beliefs and history. I definitely need to add a few books on the reading list regarding that. On the topic of the dead returning to haunt the living and cause trouble and even kill, well obviously the Barrow-wights immediately come to mind from The Lord of The Rings. I think Tolkien had a very clear perseption of what he was writing about and portraying in the Fellowship (as well as his other writings). Taking already existing elemnts of Norse culutre and mythology and applying it to his fantasy world and expanding it ever more. That is the essence of magic on so many levels! Thanks for the well researched and presented video.
I'm a Texan of Wendish decent... I've been researching my Wendish heritage, now, for a couple of years and this is the COOLEST information I have found so far!!! Thank you for this!!
Great video. I have one of those little pouches with little religious figurines that was with my father's stuff after he died. Now it makes sense why someone kept those.

I'm late to the party, but I only just found your content. I want to say I've found these topics interesting for a long time. Anything olde Scandinavian and Slavic culture.
To wander about winding ones's way through the woods ... actually, to wend one's way through the woods was the older usage ... Vanir, Vandal, Wendell, Wend perhaps even Vanara seem to have been the woods nomads when the earliest Indo-European steppe culture showed up. From what I gather, Texas Wends are indeed Sorbes, but not all Wends were ethnically Slavic. The original term seems to have referred to one's lifestyle, not necessarily one's ethnicity.
from what a group told me up here (i'm in ontario) some of my family would have been Wends; and what i was told was that the Sorbs were from a slightly different area and settled in 2 or 3 places in the US. When i look at the map quickly - i get that. A daughter of a great aunt sent me a bunch of photos and papers after my father died. That's how i found out - only 2 years ago.
@@alysmarcus7747 Some of my mother's side of the family made claim to being Wendish, but held a name which in Slavic specifically means stranger who does not speak a Slavic tongue. I asked a cousin, and he led me to believe that they were of the people who were there before the Germanic peoples showed up, but not Slavic either.
Great Video, thank you! Could you also link some sources, esp. to the obodrites? I am German from the baltic sea. So it is quite interesting for me. Unfortunately i couldn't find much sources except on the historical development or smalls things you can read in the museum in groß raaden.
I know it's an old video, but I must say. That's almost literally Serbian folklore. Hearth, duša, džed, worshiping of ancestors, mora, vampire (of course), funeral rites, fear of the dead returning from their graves, even divlje žene, who are literally Vile from Serbian folklore, connection with nature (trees especially), even Serbian Slava is only ancestor worshiping that church took because it was too important for the people to be simply deleted or banned etc etc ETC. Funny thing is, all that I'm mentioning is still practicing today and/or believing in today. Of course, mostly in rural places, but there's no place in Serbia that has no some belief in Vile, in sacred hearth, in duša that can leave the body during sleep, werewolves (yes, those born with teeth were considering werewolves), significance of ancestors, ritual meal over the graves and during funerals (dača), spirits having battles in the sky during sleep... I can continue till I repeat almost everything you've said.
very interesting; i read whatever possible about worshipping svantevit (rügen) called swiatovid in poland. would you once make something about the beliefs of southern slavs?
Lol. Absolutely right. I was born and raised in Texas. Other than 8 years living in Colorado I've been here my whole life. Obviously we border Mexico so there are a lot of Hispanic people here but it seems like most people here are either German or Czechosovakian. I was adopted and raised by 3rd generation Germans.
Fascinating as always. I would like to know more. Would you mind posting some of the sources you used in producing this video, or any sources you would recommend on Wenish religion? The mora sounds a lot like a supernatural explanation for sleep paralysis. (Off topic: There's an old joke that the missing heads and arms from Greek and Roman sculptures ended up on Indian statuary. Apparently they stopped by the Slavic countries on their way.)
I am of Wendish Ancestry. But why did my ancestors lose the wars and become Christians? Not a lot of power in their beliefs, and I am not a Christian. Stephen Flowers has a good book on Wendish Mythology. Enjoyed the part about the Funeral rites, if I can source it.
This was a great video, thanks! I was wondering if you have any book recommendations for those of us who would like to do some further reading on the subject? I can find a Germanic or Celtic mythology book pretty easily, but Slavic mythology and religious books are pretty difficult for me to find in English at least.
I am wondering which sources you use? I have been delving into this topic some months ago and the general gist of it is: not much is known at all, as there are very few written records and archeological finds. So I wonder which sources you tapped into? That would be really helpful for me to further pursue this topic.
You see im from Prague and my nation is actually very often making fun of ourselves for being not believers but also not atheists. If you ask a Czech About religion or his beliefs he would say something like :there is something above us" or start speaking about one s soul.So this heritage seems to be deeply grounded in our collective memory maybe
Czech Republic was the very first country I visited when I decided to get into an airplane for the first time. I was 28. Sold a lot of my paintings, almost all of them for a cheap price, and spent the money to finally have a different experience by getting into an airplane and experience another culture. I can tell you I had the best time and so much hospitality, it was beautifully and wonderful. You are from and amazing country. I want to visit it again. I want to live there! lol, sorry for the rambling, but I do have wonderful memories from there.
bury me deep so i can not creep. i'm not asleep. i'm dead. get that straight in your head. on your knees to mumble and pray. check under the bed for me each day. harharhar thank yew arith. gare
The Wends are native Poles. The rebellious wends, i.e. the Polish Piasts, fought with the wends. They were influenced by the Roman Empire. They called themselves Poles. But in general, the Wends are the ancestors of native Poles. Because in Poland their God is worshiped to this day. "Świętowit"
The part regarding astral projection and doing battle in another dimension was excellent even though you didn't describe it as such, as for their knowledge regarding the spirits and other questionable entities that are everywhere just like modern day radio or Wi-Fi validates was also intriguing, the only disappointment during this presentation was reference to the movie that stars Antonio Banderas, that movie was anti-Pagan and pro abrahamic religion, and whom knows how much they paid him a Spaniard to play a muslim unless he's a confirmed maurisco, murano, or greedy shill, I find that fictional film a crime against history considering middle eastern invaders occupying for a bit and almost conquering Spain have since had bad blood on a literal genetic memory level, but whatever in that distant age after Rome fell the defenses where down and all European kingdoms had an every man for themselves mentality and lets not forget the Vikings taking advantage of the chaos to pirate raid their neighbors and trade Caucasian slaves and goods as far into the Mediterranean to barter with middle easterner semitics of either creed...you out to recommend Valhalla Rising now that was an epic fantasy tragedy, fictional as well, but more plausible.
Can anyone recommend a good book on the subject? I haven't found a pagan guide to Slavic Gods and folk traditions, but hopefully someone out there knows of a good title!
There a debate if have - the warrior leave their bodies and transform or symbiticly-possese wolfs, full physical transgormation or more toward how living in the wilderness, will make you wild by behavior and apoerance?
Great work, I am Wendish from Germany Kleins on the Rhine went to Ballarat Gold the knowledge is being transmitted to the next generation if they listen? Teach the children over many generations, as you should do personal knowledge for me date back to? My Grand mother Matiltda born 1900 connected the centuries to me.

I have been connected to horses my entire life but I am the only child of my parents and my cousins and aunts and uncles and mom and dad are not the same as I am with horses... my moms side loves horses but not like me... so yeah... interesting right. oh and I have always had a dog and my dog sleeps with me and all my dogs are big. they ahve always been big dogs. oh man this is so cool
They are both related to PS _merti-_ ("to die") and some other PS words. The Goddess Marzanna can be considered a Moira, similar to the Greek Atropos or Roman Morta. The Slavic Zorze are like Morai in many ways, and I suspect their original name was some kind of combination of Jaskry-Oste-Siostry-Stare (Bright/Vivid-Last-Sisters-Old Ones) or maybe just had different names like that and it doesn't really make sense to create nonsensical PIE reconstructions such as Hausos.
The Lusatian Serbs were first mentioned in Franconian Chronicle of Fredegar as "Surbi". Later name was "Sorabi". In German language the Lusatian Serbs were longtime called "Wends" or "Sorbs" or "Lusatian Serbs". After the Second World War the Lusatian Serbs of Budyšin refused to be called "Wends" in German because of it's misuse during the Nazi period (the Lusatian Serbs of Chóźebuz, who speak another Variant of Lusatian Serbian language, have less problems wit the term Wends), so they insist on the use of "Sorbs" in German corresponding to the oldest mentioning "Surbi". "Lusatian Serbs" is most fitting name for them, but some stupid German neonazis would want to send them back to Serbia....
Wends were outnumbered that's probably why Roman legions enslaved all Germanic tribes but avoided to plunder wendish Territory when they headed to British isles
Burning living maidens with high staues deceased to acomppany them on the afterlife, and the new life rising from the ashes... its very much like semele-zemele, who burned by the lightning of zeus(-zamoxios?) True-form, and Dionysus-Zagrues surviving in the ashes, and sown ino zeus's thigh? (Wich might relate to the thickckness of arabian pants, that exist for the believe that the messiah will born from a male?)

Thank you for this
I'm representing Wendish today. I am high level nurse. we have to be burned to give us peace!
Awesome video man
very interesting; i read whatever possible about worshipping svantevit (rügen) called swiatovid in poland. would you once make something about the beliefs of southern slavs?
I can find a Germanic or Celtic mythology book pretty easily, but Slavic mythology and religious books are pretty difficult for me to find in English at least.
thank you :)
Makes perfect sense as the vampire or Slavic name of this creature "upyr" (and its variations) basically means "unburned".
@arith, how about the dog in Germanic culture?
I love the similarities in European cultures and pre-christian belief.
Thank you very much 🤟
This is a really great video. Thanks for making it. Do you have any book suggestions?
There will be a list, hehe. Thank you
Arith Härger have you posted the list yet? 😀
I am wondering which sources you use? I have been delving into this topic some months ago and the general gist of it is: not much is known at all, as there are very few written records and archeological finds. So I wonder which sources you tapped into? That would be really helpful for me to further pursue this topic.
To my knowledge sorbians still exist in some areas in east germany as a recognized minority
They do, the language is also still alive
you can Google "Spreewald" there some houses and stuff like this. If I'm not wrong. Greetings from Germany. :D
@@ArithHärger Even two Sorbian languages. Upper Sorbian / Sorbian and Lower Sorbian / Wendish.
@@ArithHärger wow thats awesome!Makes me happy you had such a good experience.Gotta let ne know when you re here!

The Wends are native Poles. The rebellious wends, i.e. the Polish Piasts, fought with the wends. They were influenced by the Roman Empire. They called themselves Poles. But in general, the Wends are the ancestors of native Poles. Because in Poland their God is worshiped to this day. "Świętowit"
Sou seu grande admirador! Grande abraço.
Abraço Quidão :D
Tudo o que penso é o que te digo - é sincero. Oxalá sejas recompensado, como mereces.Grande abraço de parabéns. @@ArithHärger
i would like to ask if the Sorbians have anything to to with Serbians? i know they both are Slavic but Serbians are southerns.
Lutki= David the Gnome, fun picture book.
💯💯
can you please cover more on vampirism and vamprye magick
There a debate if have - the warrior leave their bodies and transform or symbiticly-possese wolfs, full physical transgormation or more toward how living in the wilderness, will make you wild by behavior and apoerance?
All Slavic is Serb and have God Swjatovid🙏🏻🌞
Great work, I am Wendish from Germany Kleins on the Rhine went to Ballarat Gold the knowledge is being transmitted to the next generation if they listen? Teach the children over many generations, as you should do personal knowledge for me date back to? My Grand mother Matiltda born 1900 connected the centuries to me.
My fathers family is of German Decent and my Moms family is of Norse Decent...
Is the Mora related to the Moirai, the three Fates from Greek religion?
They are both related to PS _merti-_ ("to die") and some other PS words. The Goddess Marzanna can be considered a Moira, similar to the Greek Atropos or Roman Morta. The Slavic Zorze are like Morai in many ways, and I suspect their original name was some kind of combination of Jaskry-Oste-Siostry-Stare (Bright/Vivid-Last-Sisters-Old Ones) or maybe just had different names like that and it doesn't really make sense to create nonsensical PIE reconstructions such as Hausos.
Your channel ❤️
I'm an old blood there not lying
You are littelary describing Serbian folklore
I just wanted to say that.
"Sorbian" is a deformed variant of name Serbian, we can tell this because Sorbian's say the speak Serbsky. Some say Sorbian and some Serbian.
11:38 EESTI EESTI EESTI!!!
Wends were outnumbered that's probably why Roman legions enslaved all Germanic tribes but avoided to plunder wendish Territory when they headed to British isles
So...no actual battles between Vikings and Neanderthals? Disappointed!
Most things you would eat would be dead so eaters of the Dead is not a very inspired title just my opinion on it
Wends Vandals Sarmatians etc were Serbs..plenty facts about that
Burning living maidens with high staues deceased to acomppany them on the afterlife, and the new life rising from the ashes... its very much like semele-zemele, who burned by the lightning of zeus(-zamoxios?) True-form, and Dionysus-Zagrues surviving in the ashes, and sown ino zeus's thigh? (Wich might relate to the thickckness of arabian pants, that exist for the believe that the messiah will born from a male?)
I am a wild woman ;)
Lets all realize and memorize that lusatians aka wends aka Sorbs call themselfs SERBI and there lands serbya !!
29:25 ...and FINNISH TONTTU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
