I accidently discovered cbsrmt back when I was 18 y.o. and only had a transistor radio when I couldn't pay my power bill. These stories helped pass the time until I could earn enough money to catch up on my bill. A lifesaver, for sure!
My dad used to record these on cassette tapes when he was working alone on the night shift. We'd always listen to the tapes in the car on vacation. I also used to listen to the tapes in my room when I was in middle school. I listened to my favorites over and over! The stories are great, and I learned a lot of new words by listening--words like macabre, modus operandi, etc.

When I was a kid in the 1970s, I had a clock radio that would shut off after an hour. I would make sure to be in bed by 10:00. I would set my clock radio and listen to the CBS Radio Mystery Theater, and it would shut off at the end of the show. Listening to the shows in the dark was much better than watching TV because the imagination is much more powerful. It is wonderful that you are posting these great shows, I was just telling my wife that instead of watching TV at night, we should sometimes listen to these radio programs. People used to do that.
Erik Lindhurst you and I did the same thing and at the same approximate time 75 76 , I think. I was young but I loved AM radio and OTR usually Oriole's baseball too.
I used to listen to this back in the 1970's...they broadcast it on AM radio in NYC. I used to lay on my bed and listen to it just after it got dark out...That was back when I lived home with my family...they're all dead now...but I still have my nephew and his fiancee...thank God.

Thanks for posting this classic episode of CBS Radio MT, a show I thrilled to as a child in the 70's on late-night AM radio. Wonderful to rediscover this & several other shows posted by thoughtful individuals such as yourself, helping preserve a salient aspect of Western Culture for the world to enjoy.
At Christmas time AM radio, maybe WPTF Raleigh Durham NC would play old old time radio programs my parents listened to in the 40's. Amos n Andy is the only one I can remember now.
Hi again, Chilly. A good episode if rather predictable. CBS Radio Mystery Theater was essentially a revival of the old Inner Sanctum series of the 1940s. Updated in many ways for the 1970s, including much more science fiction. Himan Brown created both, and was undoubtedly a genius. We all owe him a great debt for the legacy he left us in a very long, productive life.
Listening to the BBC radio show of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy on shortwave radio late, late at night on a roof top at the edge of the Desert of Lot in S. Iran while staring at the Milky Way was bliss on several levels. That was a long sentence!! :)
Oh, and I loved/love EG Marshall. His voice became synonymous in my mind with Rod Serling, the Control Voice on TOL, the hosts of Quiet Please, Dimension X, Lights Out, Mlack Mass, and other iconic voices that represented epic tales fueled by fervent imaginations, including The Crypt Keeper et al. Anyway, E.G. Marshall was brilliant.
I'm glad I'm not the only who enjoys these radio shows. In addition to be highly entertaining I feel connected to the generations who sat around their living rooms and listened intently to these stories.
i remember hearing this episode as a little kid in the '70s listening to my radio in the dark past bedtime, loving the voice of Ralph Bell without knowing his name
I used to hear stories like these while traveling in the station wagon at night. You could get AM radio stations from all over the country and I remember stuff like this.
there is something about otr that makes it better than TV its like reading a book and the book is always better than a movie just without the eye strain.
This brings back so many wonderful memories. Growing up I couldn’t wait to put my headphones on in bed and listen to these stories. It was always on a school night. The headphones were to not get caught by my parents! Thank you so much. 🙏❤️
This was and still is great. I came from a poor middle class family. My mom had to work. My room was in the basement, cooler down there. I was in 9th grade this would come on around 8:00pm. I live in Redford Michigan, today I live in Texas. It was always done with quality from the beginning.
