some families will just say “you live under my roof so you live by my rules” but they won’t let you move out because they think you’re ‘not responsible enough’
The fact that she follows that demand without complaint tells me that she’s not an adult, at least in her mind, & she’s not ready to be independent.

I firmly believe that Shauna should either go to college or get a job and start living her own life. Just because she looks like a child, doesn’t mean that her parents should treat her like a child. At 23 she should be living her life on her own instead of living at home not being allowed to do much of anything. smh.
I think some of it is her own fault though, doesn't seem like she's put much effort into finding a job which is the only real obstacle in the way when it comes to her moving out.
Being small doesn't prevent you from getting into college either, for someone who wants to be independent she hasn't put any work into it

He parents would probably like that more than anything in the world but life’s different for so many people my sister is in special needs in 9th grade and she wants to live a normal life and be treated normally. I get that but your not seeing this from the parents view.
Err... one day, you might start understand the situation from the parent's point of view. She doesn't even have a plan. Heck, I'm certain the mom would like to start having her own life instead of feeling guilty every day.
To be honest, she’s full of shit. She has no money, no plan, nothing but she wants to move out? Then she has the audacity to blame her parents for not letting her move out? Any sane parent would say no if their kid was like “I have no money and no plan but I want to move out”.
I mean what if they said yes, what then? Then she starts planning? You can do that yourself before and create a stronger argument for wanting to move out. Hell she’s a grown women she doesn’t need permission from her parents.

I don’t feel sorry for her, at least not in this particular situation. It’s not that she wants to move out, she wants her parents to pay everything for her. If she had a job and would like to move out and actually acted like an adult, her parents would be more than willing to help her and support her and let her live independently, on her own
Her parents treat her like she’s 12 and she acts like she’s 15.. shes 23 why is she so focused on dating. Maybe get a job that’s how people usually meet.
It is just one way. That said, it is a unique situation when your parents are so worried about you being away from family to just get a job. It seems like she is worried too, likely because she was raised assuming most people are going to try to use her and any men are likely to fetishize her. It sucks.
Getting a job is near impossible these days… No one wants to hire someone with no work experience or super useful skills. Getting volunteer work isn’t easy either… That’s the problem for most people. It’s worse for those who don’t have a GED, are disabled, can’t drive and no bus system or taxi available and/or not very social. These days if you aren’t super social and have great social skills with everyone they won’t hire you. Employment is set up to fail all who aren’t within the “average” group
Shes so focused on dating because it's scripted. The audience likes romance and dating in the show so the producers scripted more of those scenes in the show. None of this show, or any reality show is actually real. This is all scripted.

She didn't go to college??? That's her best chance of finding a job. With her disability, she can't just go anywhere. That height is a serious liability for many jobs, restaurants, childcare, etc.

I feel this is quite relatable to me as a disabled person. My family - especially my mother - has always been very overprotective of me and even though we know it comes from a place of love, it really hurts to feel stuck or trapped and it really reminds you of just how "different" you are when you see others your age having all these life experiences and you feel at a standstill.. I'm 29 now but now I almost don't feel like I even know who I am as a person, if that makes sense. I haven't truly had the chance to grow as my own individual without the codependency of others. Just made me a bit emotional to relate to these feelings.

As a person with a disability I can totally relate to this episode. It’s hard to get your family to trust you to be independent and self sufficient yet still needing extra support. It’s also hard dating and getting a job when you have special circumstances. I also can relate to what she said about wanting to date someone who has had hard circumstances in life. I feel similar about people I look to date.

I get it, but also, I think she could definitely get a job. Independence is not something that is given, it is earned. If she wants to live alone and be independent, she has to take these steps on her own. Of course she is in a special situation, that might make some things harder and she still needs support, but if she had a job and would act responsibly, I think her parents had no problem with her moving out and would rather support her. She is currently treated by them more like a teenager, but that is because she acts like one. If she had a job and was acting like a responsible adult, she would definitely be treated like one.
@@sepro5135 also I understand your point and on the surface I agree with you. But again as a person with a disability it’s not always as black and white as that. She could have reasons she’s not able to get a normal job. Yes if she wanted to bad enough she could find a job that would be accessible to her. But I’ve applied to many jobs I’ve been rejected based on my disability and not on my skill level. The sad truth is not everyone is willing to hire someone who is different. The moment you ask for accessibility you are turned away. We have no idea what her personal reasons are for not working or if she’s tried to work in the past. Maybe that’s why she is doing the show. Putting yourself out there with the label of being a grown adult trapped in an 8 year old body is pretty embarrassing but maybe it’s her best chance at making money. My point is we don’t know anything about her except what we see on the show. That makes it pretty hard to properly judge the situation.

What I think is that, based on how the show tells us information etc., we would have been told that she had tried to get a job unsuccessfully in the past, if she had. So I think it is fair to assume that she hasn’t tried seriously to get a job (if she has, then what I say doesn’t apply of course). I am by no means an expert, but I think that she would be able to do an ordinary office job. Of course, there might still be some challenges like accessing a printer etc, but these are pretty minor and otherwise, with a good chair, she can work at a computer like every other person. Now there are probably still a lot of problems I couldn’t think of, but I think, based on her way of conducting herself in the show (I mean it is a show, so we don’t know how accurate it actually is, but we have to assume that they are showing the truth) her attitude and mindset is very much not good if she wants to actually become independent, as she hasn’t shown the responsibility needed for being independent. That might be a job, making an actually reasonable plan to move out, setting concrete rules with her parents that allow her more independence etc.

The conversation about moving out is always an awkward one, it's not because she has a condition. Nothing i hate more than when a person blames their condition on everything. I think she should start taking classes at a local community college and figure out what she wants to study and what kind of career she might like to have. I'm sure she would meet a good guy who would be willing to deal with the attention somewhere along that journey.

You're young, so you don't realize this, you will if you ever have kids. Good parents don't stop being parents. You worry about your children all the time, no matter the age. Sure when you're the child, you feel controlled or smothered, but it's more than that.
2:17 - No one should feel worthless (everyday of their life). I couldn't finish watching this video because I started to tear up but I truly hope Shauna can find happiness if she feel's this way. We already know she has the strength and courage to put herself out there for millions of people to judge and is being honest with herself on camera. As a loving family I would hope they would provide her the tools to be able to support herself on her own by her own means instead of enabling her and doing everything for her. Protecting her is one thing, keeping her in a cage is another. I would’ve encouraged college, and work etc. there are ways to help her manage her life safely while stl giving her the chance to be independent and grow into her own person. If she acts helpless it’s because they keep her thus. If she expressed moving out I would explain her limitations at the moment b ut work with her to save up, find a job etc. idk why they didn’t make her go to college and earn a degree etc. in her case an office setting would’ve been awesome. I say this without knowing her full story of course, but it seems she’s been coddled into staying small-no pun intended.

She’s entitled to her feelings. I don’t think she sounds snotty at all. She’s been over protected. She’s getting resentful that she hasn’t progressed as others her age have. If I were her parents I’d find her a cheap apartment of her own, put her in self defense classes, support her in finding a online job/school. I honestly feel like she acts like any 22 yr old at home wanting to leave but being too codependent to even begin to know the first step as to do that.
I can relate to her because I have an disorder called Autism and that’s how I’ve be feeling sometimes. Real talk! But now I’m loving alone by myself that you can still be independent and live with your parents and without your parents. You have to put your mind into it and have a plan in order to do that. Shauna needs talk therapy, I use to think that talk therapy was stupid and useless. I met a therapist and he has helped me more than I ever thought he would. Having someone that see things from different perspectives really helped. She wants to move out that is fine but you gotta get a job or go to college.

@@rdu239 it’s not financially feasible to move out of her parents house in 6 months unless she has the cash to pay for a house. If she has no credit she won’t be able to get a mortgage (which are stupidly expensive right now considering how high interest rates are), not to mention things such as groceries and energy are going up on price. If I where her I’d be taking advantage of the fact that her parents are letting her stay, find a decent job or go to school part time and work and save up for a house.

I’m 19 and I’ve already decided to live at home during college and maybe try to save up to pay for a house or condo in full. Housing and literally anything you can try think of is incredibly expensive these days and it’s an absolutely terrible time to get a mortgage given how high interest rates are. There’s no possible way she could survive without a job unless she’s getting paid a lot for the show, but even then I wouldn’t buy a house in the current market.

In my country you mostly move out when you can/want. Often is because you get married (like me at 27). My brother is still at home, my best friend is still at home, my sister in law is still at home. All for different reasons. It's fine

Shauna you can do anything you want! There is someone for everyone, in this world. Please embrace your loved ones!! They can help you move forward out of love. Shauna, you need to learn life skills to help you:. Budgeting & learning how to manage a household. I was on my own at just turned 16. I came out of foster care as I was abandoned by my parents pretty young 11 or so as we three kids were split up. I didn't have too much of a higher education but if I were you, I'd get one. I feel for her I've watched my granddaughter go thru this. I moved her up to live with me and she stayed 2 1/2 years and ended up going back home. She a little person and finally got a job and seems happier.

I’d be really worried about her too. She said she attracts creeps, and she’s little so it makes her more vulnerable. It’s hard feeling like your daughter might be in more danger just because of her size. I think everyone should give this whole family a break.
I think it’s a self fulfilling prophecy. She’s immature for her age because her parents baby her. I get that she has unique medical challenges but she won’t be a fully independent adult if they don’t start treating her like one.
I have a good friend who doesn’t have Shauna’s medical issues but still had this kind of dynamic with her parents. They treated her like she was 15 all the time and then blamed her for it.

Your parents definitely LOVE you, hence they are sheltering you which unfortunately feels like they are holding you back and understandably is not good for you . So go back to school, get a degree or something, OR find a job so you can freely support yourself.
Ugh I know EXACTLY how Shauna feels. My parents baby me all the time and they try to keep me stuck at home, and they act like her parents. But the time has come where I realized my parents can't control my life forever. I'm a 21 yr old man I need to get out there and live my life.

I’m 29 years old, I’m 4’9. All my life I was told I look like a child, I always get stares, I’m always asked how old I am. I don’t have a medical condition that would consider me a “little person” but I understand her pain. However, that pushed me even more to push forward. I worked as a correctional officer at a men’s prison, I joined the military (had to get a medical waiver due to my height) & I’m currently serving in the military. I understand our challenges are different but what I’m trying to say is you have to push yourself no matter how sheltered you are & you can truly accomplish what you set your mind to! At first glance, you’d see a child who relies on her parents. But then you’d be surprised to get to realize that she actually is really dependent and doesn’t think much of her financial issues. the disconnect is definitely shown when she says she feels worthless. I believe she meant it more so as in her not being able to move out or have a job, in comparison to everyone around her she feels like she doesn't have much going for her in life. Those are emotions stemming from her disadvantages faced and feelings from her growing up with her condition. I pray she continues healing, and her family is blessed with understanding. They're trying as well but they allow their love an protective nature to overshadow her true deep feelings, they would never want anything bad to happen so they're taking on the responsibility of guard, blindly through love.. again just my opinion on what I'm given..

I can relate to Shauna my parents treated me like a kid when I was in my 20's. I was still living at home and got treated differently from my older sister. Shauna parents should not treat her like a kid she's adult. She should be able to do whatever she wants without her parents giving her a hard time.
💗😊💕As a parent, I see how challenging this situation to be. However, it’s important to support our kids when they want to become more independent. If I was her mom or dad I would encourage her to attain what she wants, first find a job that could financially support her, maybe see if she can get roommates if the costs are too high. Plus, there are benefits to having roommates, for one thing ‘FUN’!!!!! (Speaking from personal experience from when I was in my late teens and early 20’s. I still laugh out loud when some of those funny memories come to mind). For another they can support and help each other. She will have a lot to offer as she has had to deal with unique challenges all her life. She is determined and can create the life she craves. Of course there will be new challenges to deal with but that’s life.
We as parents want to ensure that our kids have all the tools in their life toolbox to help them make a life for themselves. As we just don’t know how much time we have left. (Just yesterday I was consoling my friend ‘Anna’ and her sister, they are both in their 20’s and have just lost their Dad who was only 55 years old (I’m 53, so this hits very close to home for me). And if a parent doesn’t do that for them, then who will? You know your child is more than ready when they can express their emotions and concerns over their situation, the way she has. Her parents could/would/might still be supportive when she moves out. Then again, for any parent in this situation, maybe the fame of being on a show and other added attributes could/would/might cloud his/her judgement. I don’t know them personally. So, I’m not making any accusations. I’m just looking at this situation in broad angles as if I myself or someone else I knew was going through it.
I remember a couple of different people when I was a child that were also demure in stature and extremely young looking for their age as well as their voice being of a higher or differing pitch. I noticed back then that the community all treated them as their actual age based on how they presented themselves and not how they came across to others both visually and aurally.
My hope for this young lady is for her and her family to take a leap of faith and for them to witness that the community will become an extension of their family and will get to know and support her in times when others who may not have known someone like her, might react in any way other than pleasant.
(Incidentally, a couple of other ladies and I all met at the time with my above mentioned friend ‘Anna’ at challenging time in our lives, a couple of years ago. We thought of her as a younger sister and looked after her--and of course with Anna’s recent loss we are here to LOVE and SUPPORT her. - See the community can and will come together for each other).
As for what the legalities are, age-wise, she is at the age of majority and mentally she seems to have the same or if not better than some of her peers. Her physical condition shouldn’t be a deterrent to having her live on her own.
And as for preparing her parents of her impending departure of 6 months into the future is most certainly not laughable. Ask around with other parents….many kids just suddenly move out with not much warning, planning, nor forethought.
Maybe another way to look at this is the general situation our young adults and their parents (my husband and I included) find themselves in. Nowadays, many are staying home for a lot longer than what used to be the norm. The media and society tells them they can’t afford it and many of them don’t even have try and it seems many are just sitting at home, not even working full-time, playing video games late into the night and barely even socializing ‘“in person” with their friends. They don’t seem to have had the same drive our generation and past generations to fly off out of the nest and start making a life of their own as soon as possible. Meanwhile many still have one or both parents still working, some even into their golden years. (My excuse for not lighting a fire under my 25 year old, is that he does go to college full time, at this time. Plus if truth be told I love having my kids at home. But I know it’s in their best interest that they start ‘adulting’, like they say. In the meantime, every time the opportunity does come up I remind my kids, it’s in their best interest to save their money to come up with a down payment to own their own dwellings, one day. If their chosen dwelling will be on par with their future projected dwelling cost, then likely it would cost them less to pay a monthly mortgage than monthly rent to a landlord. Plus, they can make changes without the constraints of a rented dwelling.)
If I were her parent, I would surely look at this situation in a brighter light and actually be grateful that she does have goals that she wants to attain in her life and be as supportive as can be, just as I do with my own family.

Along the road of life, we meet people at work or school that can become true friends.(in my case my older friends couldn't advise me;. I dealt with situations well beyond my years). Definitely the family dynamic is holding her back from venturing into adulthood. I can understand and appreciate why her family is concerned about her, however it would probably be pivotal for the whole family to participate in family therapy in order to work through this unique situation so that shauna can embrace her life in a way that is as normal as possible. I would definitely say that there is some co dependency happening in this family and that could be a rather significant reason for why there is such hesitation for her to move forward in life. But wtf do I know? In any case, they seem like a very kind, daring family & have problems just like we all do. No judgement here, as my family also has issues as well. No family is perfect. ❤
It doesn't matter what her parents say. She is a legal adult, she can move when she wants to. She just needs to get a job.
From what I can see Shauna is caring, kind, passionate, and loving also a lot of other good things. Please believe in yourself I really think Shauna is special and she shines very brightly. Here's some advice hope it's ok, don't assume you'll know what others say before they speak. Hear them out first don't think they'll say no. If she ever reads this... I'm not your parent or siblings and I don't have to say this but girl you're not worthless. If anything in my opinion your uniqueness is so very special and you should love yourself, as someone who has seizures but lives in their own place I will have to say just so that you're prepared there are some days I have still where I wish I was still at my family home because it can get lonely and it does get very expensive.

If she gets a job, though, six months from then is reasonable to move out. That was the point of her timeline. From this show, it seems like her parents are fairly worried about her doing anything not around family. Getting a job has probably not been encouraged at all.

She is treated like a teenage or a child by everyone. It doesn't help when even at home, your own family is so worried about you being independent that they have slowed down your entire life. At 23, you shouldn't have to ask your parents if they will let you work and move out without making it a fight.
