A stratagy that i like to use that would have helped greatly in this situation, is that when im powerfull i dont use torches, because i can deal with low vision by being more cautious and then usually i can keep constant torches up through the second half of caves(minus dm fight because thays just wasteful) and keep it all the way through demon halls
Its actually better to make clairvoyance stones rather than using magic mapping, the radius is large enough that the lowest i have ever seen it map was around 75%ish of the level and it normally is like 90% and in demon halls that is more than enough, and having 2 from one scroll makes it effectively twice as effective
