Wow interesting and awesome to see someone delving into what I think is finding a load to match the weapon. So so many aspects to this that most people don't really understand. If you go buy 2 identical rifles but made at different times they have different loads to get them to work and just because your load works where you live if you are going for LONG distances you can even have a different load some where else
Soon I will be doing some ladder tests trying to home in on good shooting loads. I will also be trying another powder that should be good for this caliber plus I am hunting for some of the other powders good for 6.5 PRC.
That rifle and cartridge combo appears to be an excellent platform. It will be fun to see where this load development goes. Getting up to 2900fps may require some larger increments, you will burn up a lot of powder with small increments, not to mention fuel for the drive to the range. Nice workup so far.
While I agree, it also shows someone what I good scope it is being given away. I tried getting some scope cam footage but the range was dark (weather) and I couldn't get it focused well. That'll be in a video soon.
@@Halfmilesniper 60.0 IMR4831 with 150s has served me well. 2935-2965 depending on bullet. But always sub-moa. If late I have branched out on various bullet weights and powders. Thanks
@Guardian Minifarm I'll keep that in mind. I was loading 180s for my son IIRC and I don't recall the velocity right now but they were hard recoiling and hard on the brass. I might need to go lighter.
Pretty much what was rattling around in my head, lol. I was expecting a little more zoom and didn't get it. At least the speed does come on once we get close to the max load.
My Dad always ran IMR 4831 in his 722 Remington 257 Roberts. His load was 100 grain spitzers with 47 grains "way back" in the 60's. A few years ago I was looking to load up for my wife's Roberts and saw it was listed as a +P load. Dad was ahead of his time! Never used a chronograph but Dad read they were 2900 FPS.

The IMR4831 is looking good so far...very interesting how cool the brass is right out of the chamber. I will be doing more testing with the H4831 as a sample of 5 shots doesn't tell us much...enough to know it takes more powder to get a similar velocity. I am curious if the H4831 will have cool brass too?
HalfMilesniper, I had an old German Gunsmith teach me a method that makes load development with a barrel that is about idiot proof. First, most accuracy loads are within 2.5g of max load for the rifle, and His method has proved True over the past 30 years. So, with this 6.5 PRC, he would fire one shot and one shot only, while increasing the powder charge .5g at a time. As you fire, stand the hull up on its case mouth where you can monitor case head condition. It is nice to chronograph the rounds as you work up but is not necessary. As pressure increases with .5g increasing shots, you will see where the case head lettering will start to flatten, the edges will go from round to starting to get square, then at max pressure, you may see some case head swipe or ejector pin indention on the case head. Then you will find difficult to lift the bolt after firing, in which case you are over Max pressure. So, now you have found the max load for that barrel with the particular components you are using. So, back off 2.5g from the max load and start shooting three shot groups. You will be amazed how this method works in every barrel you shoot. Seating depth should be close to the lands or max Mag length, then change primers. Typically, you find a load that shoots 3/8" and smaller groups Best wishes
That is a great method for the experienced loader, but we have to remember not everyone has experience or the ability to read ejector swipes and case smears. With that said it is best to take the slow approach for the audience who may be just starting out loading or even shooting. Now, the next rifle I do...not sure when or what caliber, I might just give the shortcut method some video time. The old way of doing things definitely takes a toll on barrel life though, that is certain. I appreciate the input, thanks for watching.
