Avoid the Autobahn as much as you can, so you can experience all the beauty of the smaller viliges along the way.
Drive south through Black Forrest (Schwarzwald) and then head East, towards Bavaria, passing the Lake of Constance (Bodensee) on it's northern shore for a phenomenal view.
For food, lookout for Country side restaurants (Landgasthof), because most of them serve typical local dishes. In Southern Gernany you should try "Maultaschen", "Käsespätzle", "Linsen mit Spätzle und Saitenwürste", "Wurstsalat", "Züricher Geschnetzletes" and many more.

If you drive north from Hamburg you can drive 2 hours to hit the Danish boarder. Schleswig- Holstein is the real north and the countryside is just awsome! We have two oceans each is reachable in 2 hours drive, beautiful islands and very unique landscaping. In the end of june (22.-30.2024) is "Kieler Woche" the biggest festival of northern Europe it is a sailing event but it also free concerts in the hole citty...8 big stages and a lot of small ones a lot of music ! I know does not fit with your travel date, but you will travel again, pretty sure.

I suggest you should do a „Wattwanderung“ (not quite sure how to translate it… a walk in the mudflats?). You can literally walk through the North Sea from shore to shore! That is really a unique thing to see. But book a guide for this, it is quite dangerous to do it on your own!

  • @JimbalayaJones

    Greetings from Germany, James!✌️
In the north you should see Lübeck and the island of Fehmarn. If there is enough time, Usedom would also be worth a visit. On the North Sea I would recommend Emden and perhaps one of the East Frisian islands.
Dresden is also a MUST in East Germany!
    ☺️
If you like, I'll cook you (and your companion) some labskaus based on my grandma's recipe. I think you've heard about it. An old north german dish.

Hi James ! This weekend two politicians (Die Grünen / SPD) were beaten up during hanging up their election poster in Dresden. One of them was hurt so badly that there was an operation necessary in hospital. If i be honest i wouldn‘t advise you to go to eastern Germany in these days. Don‘t get me wrong. There are many nice people too, but i think it could be also very dangerous just when you are a foreigner. Looking forward to your videos. Stay safe & cheers ! 🙂

@@GuinnessBoys1972 There's no need for a "Besserwessi" attitude. I live in lower Bavaria. Before I lived here, I lived in Thuringia for years. I still spend about three to four weeks a year in the former GDR. To be completely honest, I see significantly more Neonazis and extreme right wing paraphernalia in Bavaria than I ever have in the east. I experience significantly more racist (micro)aggressions in Bavaria than I ever have in the east. As a white foreigner, there are definitely areas that I avoid in Bavaria because I regularly see Neonazis there (e.g., I stopped going to certain grocery stores over the weekend because I saw so many people in Neonazi t-shirts there). I never had to do that in the former GDR.

  • @Danisachan
    @Danisachan 14 днів тому +4

    OK, here goes! :D
First: For my birthplace of origin: East Germany!
If you want to see more nature you should defenitely visit the Spreewald and hop on to one of their infamous gondolas and let yourself shipped around a beautiful scenery.
And there are a lot of very local dishes that immediately remind me of my childhood, that you might try out then, because I'm always a big foody as well when I travel. ;D
Here are just what comes to mind:
    - Quark und Kartoffeln
    - Ragoutfin or Würzfleisch
    - Plinze (with whatever sweet-filling you might like)
    - Senfeier or Saure Eier
    - Jägerschnitzel (DDR style!)
    - Soljanka
They are typically not fancy foods. But the cuisine of the former DDR was always more hearty, resourceful and filling than beautiful, given it's history. ;D
Most of the other things you have already eaten, but of course there is never something wrong with a good old East German Döner! XD (And trust me: there are sooo many regional differences!!)
For a beautiful city far south I recommend Konstanz and the nearby "flower island"! Absolutely stunning!!! ❤️❤️❤️

There are lot's of clubs and bars, so there is a lot of stuff to see

ok my Route Suggestion: you start from Hamburg maybe do a quick detour to Lübeck which has a beautiful old town and the Baltic Sea with some of Germanys best beaches. Then drive down to Nordrhein-Westfalen (and maybe do a quick stop in the Lüneburger Heide) and experience Münster, Köln Aachen etc. Then you could drive down the Mosel or Middle-Rhein valley which are two of Germanys best Wine regions with tons of cool castles like Burg Elz. You could then drive down to my beautiful Home Baden Württemberg and visit Heidelberg and Freiburg (and the Black Forest) also amazing places.
Then head over to Stuttgart and further via the Schwäbische Alb (which has tons of cool not too touristy castles) to Ulm which has the highest cathedral in the world and than on to Nördlingen. After that you should visit Nünberg and maybe (if you have the time) go to Dresden and the sächsische Schweiz which is known for spectacular rocks and boulders with nice views. Finish your trip in Munich with a visit in the nearby Alps and the Oktoberfest.
    Enjoy your time here!

Actually already commented that on a community post recently, but I'll repeat it here to keep things together for you:
Throw in a little bicycle tour on your way to Munich. There's a rather famous region called "Romantisches Taubertal". Loads of bike tourists from all over. A good starting point for working your way down south or just a couple of days of exploring the area is Wertheim. It's part of the Frankonian wine region, sports hills, forests, rivers, more castles and romantic medieval small towns you can think of, you can also do kayaking or river tours, Würzburg is a great spot in the vicinity and since it's the Limes region there's a lot of things from the Roman times to explore as well.
Würzburg has a big Festung with a history that reaches back to way before the Romans came up here and it also boasts one of the "most bling" "Pfarrhäuser" in Europe. (Local Bishop actually used to be a prince bishop, which means he was the religious AND worldly leader of the vicinity and therefore kinda richer than God, which shows in his "humble abode" called "Residenz" *chuckles*)
Link to the local campground: www.azur-camping.com/camp/Camp-Wertheim?gad_source=1&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvvff5s7vhQMVSZiDBx0p2AZvEAAYASAAEgL9MvD_BwE
Also: it's quite touristy, but don't skip out on Rothenburg ob der Tauber, visit the "Mittelalterliches Kriminalmuseum" (or so. Locals kinda just call it the torture museum. *shrugs*) and all of the other famous things there.
OR work your way down south a bit further east with the Nürnberg region. There's also a couple great places to visit (aside from Nürnberg, ofc)
Or, as I said, stay west and go from Würzburg towards Stuttgart.
    🤷‍♀️

    • @JamesBray3
      @JamesBray3  15 днів тому +2

That’s a very well thought out route actually, and a bike tour does sound fantastic (especially with Münster being the Copenhagen of Germany haha! I’ll definitely look into it! Thank you for your recommendation!

    • @asaris_
      @asaris_ 15 днів тому

@@JamesBray3 Well, and: cities are exciting and there's a lot to do, but if you want to get a feel for Germany you also have to leave the cities, soak in some landscape and let the ancient history "settle in" a little.
Unfortunately there isn't much left of that in our cities because only a handful of "highly valuable" historical buildings have been restored after the large scale bombings destruction of the last days of WWII. Most of the time there's a small "historical corner" and then there's the large, fugly, modern bits. 🤷‍♀️
You'll probably only fully understand that once you've experienced the "other side" of Germany.
And whichever corner of that other side you choose: enjoy!
Even if there's going to be less "fun density" than in the cities. *laughs*
It's still great to mix in a bit of time to "decelerate". 😉
EDIT: forgot to mention something characteristic for the region: our castles are red. It's the local stone. As a kid I thought ALL castles were red. Imagine my confusion when I saw my first non-red one... 😅

Yes, please visit Trier and the Weinstrasse along the Mosel, there are lots of nice little towns. In Aachen, this time, go inside the cathedral and visit the Palatine Chapel (which is all that's left of Charlemagne's palace), his throne, his tomb, etc. The Black Forest of course, with the medieval town of Freiburg im Breisgau, Heidelberg and its castle (which was the home of the Princess Palatine, Liselotte von der Pfalz)... From Kehl in the Black Forest, you could also easily cross the French border and visit Strasbourg in Alsace (it's so close you could walk there, not even 6 km). Please visit Strasbourg, it's beautiful and has a lot of history, wine and good food, too.

Gretings from the Rhineland.Since retirement I`ve followed your last trip through parts os Gernany and it was always a pleasure.
You´ve already seen the main and touristic spots in and out of Hamburg. To get a feeling how beautiful, relaxing and unique the North of Germany is,start in the very North of it, driving from Hamburg the „Grüne Küstenstrasse“ passing Büsum and Husum to Niebüll and go by a train with your Camper to the island of Sylt (Camping possible in Westerland or Hörnum) to the northest Spot in List and it Fish at the wellknown „Gosch“. If you draw a line to the mainland you´re already in Denmark.
Leaving Sylt you may had to the coast to the Baltic Sea, pass Flensburg an Lübeck an head into the former GDR to the Müritzer Seenplatte.
Take a Tour alomg River Mosel or river Main, walk throuh the Black Forret. It´s a short way to Lake Constance, then through the Allgäu to Munich. Have a good trip, I´m ready to follow your upcoming adentures

You should visit the City of Bocholt in the region Westmünsterland. This city is near the border of the Netherlands and it even has a suburb that is half Netherlands and half Germany which is pretty interesting to see. As the others say, stay as less as you can on the Autobahn to see the real diferences of the different regions. Also the Ostfriesische Inseln in Niedersachsen are worth a shot, Borkum in particular is an beautifull Island that you should visit, because the ferry to it is already an adventure on its own. All there is left to say is have fun exploring this very diverse country from the beaches over the flat lands to the tallest mountains. It for sure will be an experience that you will never forget.

Hey hey, also i wrote it in other videos here some points in Limburg an der Lahn:
    1. Limburger Dom a lovely dome on top of Limburg. You have a great view of the surrounding from there.
    2. Limburger Altstadt: With houses build before 1700
    3. Kunstbäckerei Hensler , an creative Bakery where art ist also important
    4. Alte Lahnbrücke mit Zollturm: It is a rock build bridge and the only entrance in Medieval from north. There has been the toll office, checking the goods.
    Then for camping:
    1. Camping Resort Limburg: It is in the green outside of the town. From there you can walk into the city and take a trip trough the streets and fields to the surrounding with a bike
    Food recommendations:
    1. EDO Limburg: Japanese cuisine on high grade. It's new.
    2. Don Camillo: Italian cuisine: It is there for over 32 Years.
    3. Zum Batzenwert: German Pub with german food.
    Beer and other:
1 Hopfenkuss Bier und Geister: There is a micro brewery in the near to Don Camillo where you can get all variations of beer.
    Trips to rural areas beneath:
If you are zooming out in google Maps you have plenty of small towns and fields in the surrounding. In Niederweyer at example you have arround 300 Persons living there in around 6 streets. On Komoot people have put their famous hiking ways down the road online for everyone to see. Here you also can see what road conditions you have and if it is getting muddy or clean path.
An interesting trip is with some food and drinks up or down the Lahn-Weg. It is a trail that is going along the river Lahn and you can go from nearly Siegen down to Koblenz if you want. It gets very croudy in summer but it should be fine with some nice drinks and some Picknick food.
I could tour you a little bit to the recommendet areas at weekend. Under the week it will get hard, because my workmate has alredy some days off, so. It is just an offer.
For some Meet and Greet there is plenty space in Limburg. We have three Market-Places where you can do that we have also a place in front of the Dome where is plenty space... The old city is also a nice Spot. Also every Saturday it is a Market on the main Place. There you could buy fresh stuff for the day.
You can message me in here if it is interesting or if you want some more ideas.
The second recommendation is the Weilburger Schloss and the mining & city museum in Weilburg. It is next to Limburg and there they have an caravan parking near the castle.

Come to Bamberg. Its not far from Nuremburg, but it's got so much charme and is often listed among the most beautiful cities of Germany. We have a stunning city with a city hall just build right into the river and you can try the famous "Schlenkerla Rauchbier", a beer that's made like in old times with smoked malt, so it tastes just like bacon. But you have to drink at least three until you get used to it.

When you pass by the Cologne area and head south, don't miss the Mosel valley, it's absolutely scenic, postcard style, with it's hills and vineyards and the beautiful half-timbered house villages. Follow the highway next to the river. There are also camping spots there, you might check the availability early. If you have time, visit a castle, like Burg Eltz (near the Mosel) or Burg Braubach (south of Koblenz at the river Rhine).

And in the middle of Germany, in Westphalen I suggest to stop at the "Möhnesee". It's a dam and just beautiful.

Paderborn. It's home of the world's largest computer museum which hosts events like robot wars. At the same time it's rich in history, dating back to Charlemagne. We have a castle and with a little bit of driving another castle with Nazi history.
Also we have a small airport where you can book a sightseeing kind of flight in a sailplane if the weather is right.
Less than 50km from Paderborn is an amusement park that also has got wild animals like elephants, white tigers and monkeys. I'm not entirely sure, but there might be a camping ground. But they for sure have got tents (glamping), caravans and bungalows to stay in.
If you decide to come to this region, I would happily welcome you with our bread and beer from Paderborn and be your guide.

You could stay at Landschaftspark Duisburg Nord next to Düsseldorf and less than an hour from Münster. Some say in Northrine-Westphalia only the Kölner Dom has more visitors than the Landschaftspark. :-) Wikipedia: Landschaftspark is a public park located in Duisburg-Meiderich, Germany. It was designed in 1991 by Latz + Partner (Peter Latz), with the intention that it work to heal and understand the industrial past, rather than trying to reject it. The park closely associates itself with the past use of the site: a coal and steel production plant (abandoned in 1985, leaving the area significantly polluted) and the agricultural land it had been prior to the mid 19th century.

Countryside? Visit the Hochsauerland, it is also called the land of a thousand mountains and lakes, wonderful landscape, historic towns with half-timbered houses. There are former mines to visit. Good food and our marksmen's festivals are not bad either, definitely more personal and less crowded than the Oktoberfest. There are lots of campsites here, for example an excellent one at Hennesee, right next to the town of Meschede. And the Sauerland is not far from Münster, the Ruhr area and the Rhineland.

You want to go from the north to the south and visit the alps? May I suggest then that you drive by lake constance and visit cities like Konstanz (in English the lake is literally named after that city) or Meersburg? These offer phenomenal old towns (Meersburg also has a nice castle) with a southern flair, a view over the lake straight to the alps and just like the Rheinland it is a wine region. They are also connected by a ferry which is probably a cool way of transportation so make sure to check them out.

When camping it makes sense to look more at rural areas rather than cities. You certainly don't want to spend a lot of time in inner city traffic with a camper.
One stop should be directly at the coast. The Wadden Sea is a UNESCO World Heritage Site at the North Sea and there are also some nice beaches. Some people also really like the eastern coast on the Baltic Sea, but I have heard mixed reviews, so you definitely should talk to someone who knows the area.
If you want to go through the east, Mecklenburg Lake Plateau is definitely some pretty nature, otherwise I would recommend to skip a few degrees of latitude (you don't really need the Harz mountains, if you are going further south anyway) and go right to the wine regions in the south-west. You could start with Rheingau. There is a camping site in Geisenheim, that is in hiking distance from several wineries.
In Palatinate I can recommend the camping site "Camping im Klingbachtal", but there are certainly other good ones in the area as well. There are more wineries, but you also have a lot of castles in the Palatinate Forest.
Further south is the famous Black Forst and you should not miss out on that. A lot of nature, pretty villages, more castles and of course the wine region Baden.
Going east from there, you could stop at Lake Constance (Bodensee). They do have some wine there too, but after that it is beer land. It is definitely a good idea, to check out the smaller local breweries, wherever you make a stop in Bavaria. I don't have any particular recommendations for camping there, though.

how about Hamburg-Cuxhaven-Bremen-Münster-(Wuppertal-)Cologne-Nürburg-Trier- (Ramstein/Kaiserslautern)- Heidelberg - Stuttgart or Nürnberg - Munich
start along the coast, maybe catch some late summer beach. then Bremen and Münster for their old towns. see the land get from flat to hilly on your way, find camping spots off the cities. lakes are you best bet. if you want: ride the Schwebebahn up and down once, then from Cologne (foundation tour under the Dom!) into the volcanic Eifel (,dormant) to catch a Touristenfahrt (you drive) or Ring Taxi (you're driven) on the Nürburg Ring. from there to historic Trier, Ramstein for the memes. Heidelberg is a pretty cute university town near Mannheim (a bit the southern Lüneburg, which is also worth a visit). then past Stuttgart (car museums) or Nürnberg (for history tripping) to Munich.
many interesting places inbetween those waypoints and even more pretty landscape to camp in.

There are so many historical and geographic landmarks to see you'll be overwhelmed. I'd suggest checking some videos about what would interest you. It ultimately comes down to your interests and preferences. Small towns can be amazing. If you are all over the place, maybe check out one or 2 ww2 related sites, especially a memorial site and a concentration camp. Dachau is close to Munich, and others are worth visiting. Balancing the amazing beauty of Germany with the horror and insanity of darker times. Check on famous landmarks and tourist spots if it's really your thing or if you wana look a less crowded alternative there is so much to see you'll be surprised. And be carefull for the German ABC "another bloody castle ... another bloody church"

  • @AFNacapella

get a camping in germany experienced guide/mentor. if not travel-along, then emergency quick call. Camping Plätze can be quirky and on rural ones english speaking staff is not a given. also a law briefing, so you avoid "surprising" fines for wild camping.
camper plus bicycle is a perfect combination, even if rented locally.
do a quest for comparison/appreciation-content: find a local beer/drink for your Feierabend-beer, best local pastry, pick up a word or sentence in dialect... anything to connect to the locals
try to catch some local events. late summer/autumn is Volksfest time: Kirmes, Jahrmarkt, Kirchweih, Schützenfest, Weinfest are all words to look out for.
from Cologne south up the Rhine or Mosel is really nice...

you plan to go to the alps, so I would DEFINITELY recommend Berchtesgaden national park along with a cable car ride to the top of the Zugspitze (germanys highest mountain) and maybe a visit to the Eagle's Nest.
And don't be afraid of eastern germany! The people there might get a bad rep, but that's just because they're more 'conservative' when compared to the rest of germany. It's nowhere near as bad as the southern united states for instance. They are generally very welcoming people and especially bigger cities like Dresden are often the opposite of the stereotype.
Also Burg Eltz, the middle rhine valley and burg hohenzollern.

The most north-west region of Germany: Ostfriesland (east frisia)
In the village of Campen (yes, no joke. And don't get it mixed up with "Kampen" - that's on the island of Sylt) there is germanys highest lighthouse (65 m) built in 1889 (same year as the Eiffeltower and a little looking like it). It can be climbt (308 steps) and You have a good view to the islands and over to the Netherlands. Two villages next to it in Rysum You can find the oldest, still playable organ in northern europe (from the 13th centurary) that was build ca 1440 AD. Also there are some campingsites at the cost. In Emden (the next city) You can visit the Bunkermuseum (a real WW2 bunker that shows life during the last war) and the museum in the old townhall with armorings (?) (Rüstungen) from the middle ages.
And of cause east frisia is the region where we consume the highest amount of tea (More specific black tea) in the world (about 300 liter per person per year).
