These children revel in the freedom of a gypsy childhood while facing prejudice and even eviction from an early age. Demonstrating maturity beyond their years, they offer an insight into one of the most marginalised yet resilient communities in the UK
13 year old Sylvanna is part English Traveller and dreams of becoming a model, “I am quite different to many travellers. They have got some of the old fashioned ways...they believe in just staying home, helping and clean and the men go out. I believe women are about as equal as men.” Determined to succeed and provide for her family she must first go through the ruthless casting process. When faced with the decision “£10,000 to cut your hair” Sylvanna shows commendable resilience as she proves her Gypsy identity is not for sale.

I feel bad for Oliver. As someone with ADHD I am almost certain he has the same. You can see it in him. His hyperfocus and special interest is his horses. He talks of not being able to concentrate and the part with the tutor shows that. If he had the proper support from SEN teams he could get everything he needed maths and English wise to allow him to be a farrier. It’s just that support that’s missing.
Drinking iced coffee doesn’t help either
Usually these episodes are from several years ago
It would be interesting to know how all these Kids are doing now.
I was thinking the same thing about little red head. She said she wanted to work doing peoples hair. Well you need to be able to read and do math if you wanna to any bleaching or coloring.

My cousin married a Gypsy here in the states. They have been married for over 10 years and have 4 kids. Her in-laws still call her a Gorger. She seems really happy in her marriage. She knew all her life that she just wanted to be a stay at home mom. Her husband is a hard worker and they are NOT on any kind of assistance.
Beautiful story but what else is she? The in laws call her a gorger because that’s what she is. Just because she married a gypsy doesn’t mean she is one

I can't say anything bad about this.. always thought I would be better off being a gypsy. I admire a lot about them. It would be nice to have so much commity in this day and age which we are truly missing ❤

The gypsies are similar to some other cultures the Amish they only go to school to the 8th grade
Where as the gypsies girls go to school until they are 11 and the boys quit early and go work with their dads but I think they should make sure they can read or at least read at home and basic math if they at least have that they could go and be a doctor a veterinarian or even a nurse you can only take being pretty so far in life . I would be friends with them if they wanted to be friends with me

There are a lot of inconsistencies and contradictions in the traveler / gypsy life.
Every one is different but yet so many us have not figured that out.

I dunno why that modeling agent can’t get it through her head Savanna’s hair is a very basic Traveler cultural value. Would she be asking a Muslim female to remove her hijab? Or an observant Jew to remove her covering? I think not, that wouldn’t be respectful of their culture. I hope Savanna learns to forcefully advocate for recognition of her culture.
also like asking a native american or indigenous person to cut their hair, when they often grow their hair very long as well (and have a history of colonizers cutting it to make them "fit in" with their society). it's so fucked.
I feel a bit bad for the horses
I still dont understand. Can someone explain what is a traveller? They seem to go to public school and do normal things.
Traditionally travellers didn’t have a stable location so police would basically kick them off the land they stayed on. Now they have land so they don’t have to move on so much. They still follow the lifestyle, values and traditions etc. from when they had to travel around but with a more stable location

Tbh the lady who made it said something sensible which was travellers women are doing all sorts of things to make money for their families. We need to stop putting ourselves in these outdated categories. We are all human beings at the end of the day and anyone can do anything and that is it

You don't need to cut your hair to get modelling jobs, my son had shoulder length hair and he went to shoot having been chosen by the casting director, the photographer said he wanted to trim his hair, we refused and I said why did you choose him if you don't like his look ?If he'd had it cut for that one shoot it would have made him less adaptable for modern or period pieces, he acted as well, he still did the shoot, stick to your guns, your hair is your culture and stylists can adapt to you.Good luck with the modelling, you are stunning.

Models do NOT make good money. Glad she wants to be a model if she’s passionate about it but she should not do it to hope she makes lots of money

@@daisysummer514 oh absolutely she is gorgeous, it’s not that she won’t get lots of work. I can’t guarantee how successful she will be in her modelling career because in addition to looks it also comes down to her presence on camera and on runways. Modelling takes a lot of skill and we can’t determine whether or not she has those skills just from seeing her face.
That being said, even if she does end up getting lots of work as a model (which she very well may) the modelling industry just doesn’t pay their models well at all. So even if she manages to get lots of work, a lot of those jobs won’t pay very well
@@LillyJones-je8ygI can’t imagine models getting paid less than a minimum wage jobs. If she isn’t going to stay in school, modeling may be a better route than getting married young like a lot of these young women do.
@@SarahPalmer-e2k as someone in the industry I guarantee you that is what it is. A lot of the time they don’t pay you at all, just letting you keep the clothes instead, this even applies with big name brands like Gucci and Prada. There is money in commercial modelling but that has very little to do with your appearance

I would love to see a video about the success of gypsy/traveler marriages. So many of the children speak with such confidence about their roles in the family and marriage I'm curious about the divorce rates. Something tells me their marriages are more successful.
Divorce is frowned upon and due to leaving school at 11 with no real education it's hard for women to support themselves if they leave. Which is why so many of them stay in abusive marriages, no where to go and shamed if you do. Also a life of bullying and abuse if any of these kids grows up to be gay. These vids show it through rose tinted glasses.
@@niccard3101 god, i didn't even think abt what being queer would be like in the community. thought about the traditonal marriages and how they foster abuse, and how it might be hard for neurodivergent or otherwise special needs kids to fit in with the working and moving lifestyle, but didn't yet think about queerness and how it'd fit in (or not).
They have very high rates of domestic violence. Divorce is still very taboo but becoming much more common in the younger generation
