I remember back when Richard came back from his big accident with the jet car how he asked that they never mention the accident on top gear. And it's nice to see how they were true mates, there's barely any clips from tg.
It's important to realize that all three of them are also the authors of the series. A lot of jokes are pre-written (Which is not a bad thing, very few people are always funny on the spot), and they will have discussions about them and which jokes are OK to make, especially about each other. So if there was anything that Hammond did not to go on air, he would have been able to object to it. That being said, both Jeremy and James were pretty worried about him after the crash and were affected by it, too, so I don't think they would have liked to really joke about it while it was still fresh on everyones minds. Jeremy even wrote a funny text message to Richards wife every day while Richard was in hospital, to keep her spirits up.

Clarkson and May can be brutal when roasting Hammond, but give the little guy mad props, he takes the abuse like a champ, and keeps on laughing along with them. These three guys genuinely love one another(in a platonic way, obviously), and it shows.
A big part of why I enjoy watching them is how much their dynamic reminds me of my three brothers, they just take the absolute piss out of each other but it’s all from a place of love
