- Our 5 pet chipmunks... Alvin, Simon, Theodore, Chippy and Skippy love eating and fighting over peanuts, sunflower seeds, cherries and pomagranates.
They live outside in our back yard but come running to get food and water when they hear the patio door opening.

Some of my most treasured memories are times I've sat in the woods and observe the wildlife activities around me. While setting in a huge tree I heard this whoosh whoosh as a Red Tail Hawk landed on a limb just over my head I could have reached up and touched it. I got a birds eye view as it preened and fluffed it's feathers. Countless times Chipmunks came within reaching distance to look me over . Setting in the quiet listening and watching God's wondrous nature at work, this is truly peace.

fed mine out my back door for 6 months. She was the only one of about 5 that was brave enough to come eat out of my hand. She would let me pet her while she would suck up seeds too. Then, over the winter months, she didn't remember me too well.
I think it is great that they are not captive....just wild and trusting. Very cool!

To begin, I LOVE chipmunks. I've a small garden, and chipmunk digging can be consequential in a SMALL garden, one year I counted over 25 times I transported munks to a large wooded area 1/2 mi. away using Hav-a-hart traps (whether they were the same ones returning or not I don't know) Noticed that if held up to light when they're in traps, a fine, constant mist can be seen emanating from their undersides like a water mister LOL Anyhow, nothing cuter than watching Mother Chipmunk teaching her babies how to dig up your garden. One of God's gifts.
Tried the same... about a few miles away... and they showed up again the next day :)

They live outside but come in the house for breakfast, lunch and supper through a hole I made for them under my siding...... The perfect pet. :)
That's pretty kewl, I had one as a pet yrs ago I kept in a hamster cage with a runner wheel for a few weeks while i tamed it, it loved the hamster wheel. It learn how to open the cage door quickly and would play in my garage and would go back in its cage to sleep. I set him free, but he didn't want to leave. He seemed to enjoy being domesticated. I think they make better pets then most hamsters, smarter too, and if you leave for vacation, you just open the cage door and sit it outside. They can fend for themselves and will go back to there cage as shelter.

Safe foods include: sunflower seed, wheat, rye, maize, oats, canary seed, buckwheat, millet, melon seeds, orange, apple, pear, cherry, gooseberries, blackberries, raspberries, strawberries, black/red/white currants, pomegranate, figs, stoned plums, peaches, nectarines, apricots, dried banana slices, raisins, sultanas, lettuce, tomato, peapods, cucumber, brussels sprouts, rose petals, dandelion leaves and flowers, chickweed, walnut, hazelnut, sweet chestnut, beechmast, pine nuts, hips and haws.

We have 3 that live outside, but we can feed from our hands. They are named Silverback ,the oldest and a rescue from a vehicle that ran him over injuring his foot making him slower, his fast friend Zippy, and the newest one with a bite mark on the ear, Nippy. They are so cute and fun to have. We love them!
Give them food and they will come.Patience is the key.

Neat. All the chipmunks and squirrels in my area are so jittery it seems that even if I were to sit still for 2 hours with a bowl of treats, they'd never come near me.

One thing about chipmunks is they have no sense of danger when it comes to cars. They dart across streets recklessly.
I love your video, chipmunks are the best. We have them outside our townhouse and they are so friendly once they warm up to you. I even just made a blog called peanutfiends to document the ones we have outside. Takes a lot of patience to get them to be as tame as yours are but once they trust you they remember you and come over when you call them. Great critters to have around.

That is adorable. I've had pet chipmunks for the past 5-6 years and the vet told me that petting them will irritate their skin and cause them to lose their fur. Ideal pets in my opinion though once you have the time and space.

I was once in the woods (I think it was in yellowstone) and there was a chipmunk. I had sunflower seeds so I started holding them out, and it just came up and would gently take each one out of my hand with it's hands and eat it and then wait for another. I only had some at the bottom of my pocket so i gave the rest to him. I always wanted one after that, but I live in Phoenix and they aren't around here.
This is pretty incredible that you got these wild chipmunks to be so friendly. I have raised squirrels from babies and they act like that...but this is pretty cool. Thanks for posting the video :)

Yes, they are wild. They live in holes in my back yard. Seems that way, I have two Squirrels that live in the woods behind our house but they never come really close to us.
I have one I feed daily, he comes when I call him and he says good night to me too.... Loves berries and seeds...

They don't bother our garden and we only feed them natural unsalted seeds.
