As I also drive an M140 for almost 2 years I agree with your “weak” points of the M140, BUT most of the points are general F20/21/22/23/87 things and also the M2 has these weaknesses. Please find my arguments here: 1. missing LSD: agree with you, but it can be fitted as an Option like you did. the traction should be then on same level as M2 - vlog at min 1:39 is a very very nice proof 👌👍 2. Square tire set up: People usually choose the same rim sizes if they run a square set up, 8x18 ET40-45 is very common with this you can run 235/40 (Cup2) or 245/35 (pilot Supersport) front and rear. You can buy Two additional OEM rear rims 8X 18 and put them on the front axle, maybe some additional spacers will be needed Also M2 doesn’t have a square tire setup 225/40 Square works fine as a winter tyre setup on mine, little less traction on dry roads but (more) nicely balanced 3. Steering wheel: I agree with you, I also would like to have a thinner wheel with more grip. But also the M2 and M2 competition come with the same steering wheel. so the only option is to fit an aftermarket upgrade, e.g. if you let someone fit alcantara to the OEM wheels you can ask him to take out the padding, Joe Achilles did this e.g. 4. Custom drive moulds: I usually drive in traction mode and that’s fine for me with 90% of my driving. But I don’t have an adaptive suspension so I am not annoyed of having a fixed combination of firm damping to sport driving mode. Also standard M2 doesn’t come with individual driving modes, that has been added with the M2 competition 5. softness of elbow rest: that’s the same on all one and two series chassis, also on M2 so you can only add a custom-made bolster if you want 6. Gearshift knob: I agree with you that the gear knob is a bit notchy and sometimes slippery, but again it’s the same gear knop as in the M2 so maybe you will try the performance gear knob 7. Offset driving paddles: I have a left-hand drive M140 and it’s fine with me, wondering if its different on the RHD versions. But again, It’s the same offset on the M2 so that’s no disadvantage of the M140 compare to M2 To sum it up: Only the first point is a real weakness compared to an M2, but it can be fixed for ca 2000-2500€ Things that I would change to make the M140 perfect for me (as a fast enjoyable but still comfortable daily): 1. LSD upgrade or choose x-drive 2. Suspension: the standard passive M140 suspension is horrible stiff and bouncy: change to KW Street comfort, V3 or DDC fix that and gives you an even superior drive in regards to comfort compared to the M2 ( that has no adaptive and is pretty hard for daily use) 3. Understeering: M140 needs more negative camber on the front to reduce understeer. Common fixes/ upgrades are camber plates (Millway) or M2/3/4 lower control arms. Also square tire setup will help. 4. Sound: the B58 sounds good but is very subtile. I would Code out the fake ASD from the inside and change the exhaust to: A 300cell Downpipe or a different muffler (Akrapovic e.g.). Unfortunately the MPE is not legal on the Manual M140 Finally there is one weakness that can’t be fixed: the electric power steering on the M140 is quite numb and the steering feedback of the M2 with the classic hydraulic power steering is far superior In general it’s also a question of your definition of perfect car, for me the 140 is an almost perfect combination of a comfortable daily driver and very fast and playful drivers car: It´s not perfect in one these categories, but it’s the best compromise I can image (in that price range) It is superior to the M2 as a daily driver as it offers more space, is more comfortable, has less fuel consumption, lower running costs and is a very subtile ride. The B58 is different, but not weaker than the N55 M2. M2 Comp is stronger for sure, but with the OPF there is almost no sound anymore. If you want basically a loud car that attracts people’s views or if you mainly want to drive the car on track or as a weekend toy as a second car, then for sure you have to go for the M2...but keep in mind that the M140 remains the better daily driver
Wow, great comment, thanks for taking the time to write that! Your last point is where I sit right now, this is my daily car, none of the things I mentioned (LSD and square setup aside) bother me enough to want to spend money and do something about them. As it is, it is a very good daily that I can ferry my family about smoothly enough that they can all fall asleep on a late night drive home, or firm it up enough to have me bouncing around while smearing the back tyres across the road surface. Good vid 👍 owned a 140 for 3 years / 56,000 miles and agree with you points - other than 6 and 7... you’re the only dude I’ve seen went manual, so most of us don’t know about those points! Did you try the auto and decide against it? I’ve driven a few manual beemers and always found the shift somewhat vague hence would never spec it
I have to agree with you on all of those points apart from the steering wheel, i don't think its too fat, if i was getting mine re-trimmed i would get it slightly larger, but that's only down to personal preference. Drivers door elbow pad may as well be concrete. Square tyre setup doesn't really bother me, when i replaced my tyres (MPSS) they had done 30K, replaced all 4 at the same time. You will only ever need to rotate your tyres from rear to front if you light the rears up all the time and burn them away. If your doing this however, you can complain about then needing to buy new tyres. I will point out though, when you were saying about the 6 driving modes, I suggest you go read the manual about TRACTION mode, Its designed for use in snow/ice/shite conditions to provide maximum forward momentum, not to be used for spirited driving.

In contrast to the standard UA-cam M140 stuff you find here which is about making the car as loud and untastefully as possible ;) As you track the M140 I highly recommend to add M4 Lower Control arms to add neg camber on the front (or adj.camber plates) which are quite cheap if you by the aftermarket version (and not the M branded). At the same time you could fit eibach prokit Springs which are only a 10mm drop but fit nicely to the adaptive dampers -> so you need the alignment only once when fitting LCA & springs at the same time

With the passive setup you are compromised a little more than with adaptive dampers. I find mine to be absolutely fine...but then I can't ever say I really lean on the car on the road to the point it gets wayward...vision, traffic, and road conditions are the main progress limiting factors before the suspension becomes an issue for me. That said, on track I did find a point where it just doesn't feel properly tied down. Having said that, it still always went where I wanted it go when I asked it to...so it handles well enough, but it doesn't feel like it does if you know what I mean?
Nick Fisher I agree in that respect, it seems to buy a winner in all departments. Curious to see if a good set of coilovers with some well judged damping can push the car to a 10/10 car then I’d be sold

I hate the steering wheel also , have just retrimmed mine in alcantara cost £20 and a few hours of my time and transformed the feel and grip. Would like it thinner and flat bottomed ideally but cant have it all unless you pay around £900.

Ah, you think it shouldn't have one? Auto? Never! I like the involvement 😁
I hate the steering wheel also , have just retrimmed mine in alcantara cost £20 and a few hours of my time and transformed the feel and grip. Would like it thinner and flat bottomed ideally but cant have it all unless you pay around £900.
I dont like the fat soggy stering wheel on mine. Looking at the alcantara replacement. And an LSD...
When is the M2 due on your drive Mark?
Not any time soon unfortunately 🙁
I'd add no. 8, (I know I mention this a lot) the ride quality on adaptive dampers. I hate it. Just done 4 hrs down the M1, only stopping to get a rest from the bouncy ride.
step0601 you drove it 4 hours in hard suspension mode propably ?!
@@vollcare4076 Ha, no but it sure felt like it!
step0601 even driving in comfort mode ?! ...do you run 19” or run flats?
@@vollcare4076 yes in comfort on Michelin pilot Super Sports, the OE tyre. Bought the car new in March '19. I used to have a Golf R and in comfort it was lovely, very plush.
step0601 sure you have the adaptive? ...I just thought that the passive M140 is that bouncy and the adaptive in comfort setting should be fine for long trips
Enjoyed that Mark 😁
LOL at the gloves.
😂 #2008
Agreed.... or just go M2 comp
Your wheel and gear stick look filthy! Give them a deep clean and you'll find them a lot grippier
Pleased you are satisfied with your bmw. A right foot full of throttle on a damp 90% bend really.
Diesel spill. Luckily I caught it or I might have had a massive 12 mph off on an otherwise completely empty road!
Come on Mark.....and you just happened to have the camera set up to capture it...…..
No, they were still running from filming the video...I was looking for somewhere safe to stop so I could then shut them all off, which I did about 60 seconds or so later.
Why spent 20k more for a slower car 🥴 M140i>M2
My car: 09 bmw 130i square setup with 4 "rear" wheels
This is good to know, thank you 👍
I dont have an m140i but if i did, one of my points would be get a proper M car. The m140i should be an just an M1 in my opinion with all the features and upgrades bmw give all their M cars over the lower cars and have the m135i as the lesser cheaper option(not a proper m car) just my opinion 🤷🏼♀️
Haha
I thought the thumbnail alone would have angered at least 3 angry little men in the comment section, must try harder 😁
Royal steering wheels? (Or similar)
It's on my potential to do list at some point in the future. I've seen some of their work in the past, top notch!
