30+mpg out of a 3 litre turbo sounds good to me, I'm getting about that from a 1.6 diesel vivaro van 🤣
I've actually reached 43mpg on it this week driving on mostly 50-60mph over 70 miles. Apple carplay in these cars is also a must, I agree. I had to code mine in
When I went on holiday with mine and a fully loaded boot. I managed to get 46mpg in eco mode and averaged 31mpg on normal commute.
So far I'm getting 30.8 mpg on my commute, so hopefully I'll get into the mid 40's on a long journey too

@@JordzyBrev mine is stage 2 now. Because it has so much torque I don't need to rev it so hard, so I'm now averaging around 34 mpg
This video was one of a few which influenced my decision to go out and buy this awesome car last weekend. I went for a 2017 LCI SE in white with the same accents / aero package your car has (in OP video). I am absolutely astonished how a 3.0L turbo engine can be so good on fuel, I have managed 217 miles as I ticked over to half a tank... that's incredible!
I only live a 4 minute trip from where I work, so more than anything this is my weekend car as during the week it barely sees any miles or action.

@@Hedz123 if anything I'd say it's become even more impressive. This car is without a doubt the best bang for buck hyper hatch (I think that's the term for these, RS3s, Golf Rs etc). The B58 is arguably the modern-day 2jzgte engine.
Can not recommend the M140i enough. Get yourself a decent suspension setup (B12 pro kit seems most popular for price) and an LSD if you can stretch to it...stage 1 / 2 map and you have a fantastic car that won't be beaten by much on the road!

So ive just traded my Golf R in for one of these i have the auto. Ive had it a week and there is definitely no regrets. I was a bit terrified of the potential fuel consumption - but the beauty of this car is you can make it sip the fuel with normal driving in eco/comfort mode and itll return respectable figures, my normal driving averages 34mpg (i got 27 in the Golf) which is amazing considering the power of this car. It can be a quiet sophisticated, comfortable cruiser - but it can play the animal very well also. Obviously if you cane it all the time the mpg will drop to early-mid 20s, but overall its a great car for the money, that 6 pot engine is an absolute peach. So I guess to anyone thinking of getting one - do it now!
How is it driving in the winters?
I’m looking at one of these now but not sure about the rear wheel drive.
@@frasersmith8097 I felt the same when i bought it, infact ive had it for 2 winters now - like all RWD cars, it doesnt like snow of course. But you'll be fine as long as you drive according to the conditions and dont hoon it around at stupid speeds in the wet or when the roads are damp. Honestly its such a great car, you wont regret buying one, they are full of character - great to drive this time of year when the roads are warm/dry - its a weapon of a car, shunts you in the back when you go for it. Great fun 👍
How is the mpg when strictly doing town driving?

The side stripe adds a good amount of aggression and uniqueness. Furthermore, it’s an OEM BMW M performance mod. Don’t listen to what others have to say, if you like it then you like it. I do admit it looks better on the 4 series, but nevertheless, it sort of ‘completes’ the M performance look.
As you know, i’m looking at an M240i so this video has actually really helped a lot and what to look out for! Stay safe
The fuel economy is definitely you, I had one of these with a diff, mapped, decat and catback and would comfortably get 35 on any journey that I wasn't booting it. Even 38 on longer journeys wasnt an issue.
32mpg given the performance, capacity and sound of the engine is great. I get 24mpg in a t5 Volvo and its poor for commuting but the 5pot sound is so much better than all these turbo 4pots that's about.
They're a unbelievable value for money car and the rear wheel drive makes it unique, albeit youre dynamically limited on UK roads in comparison to a 4 wheel drive unless you drive like you stole it.

MPE is a valveless system, it's the standard backbox with the flap issue.
i fixed my issue by unplugging it, just make sure it’s open when you do👍🏻
Came back to this a few years later as I finally got out and test drove one of these. I’ll be honest, I was totally intimidated by it at first, I’ve had a Mini Cooper S which is the fastest car I’ve owned, nothing compared to this. I currently drive a 1 series diesel so still RWD but no way near enough power to cause any concern. I can thankfully say tho, I absolutely loved it. Drove amazingly and that power was just mind blowing (to me). I didn’t find it sketchy at all and it was completely standard so still had the open diff, I didn’t try and get it sideways however as I wasn’t quite confident enough and it also wasn’t my car. I did have it in sport+ with the traction off and never once felt I wasn’t in control. The roads were very dry however and was about 22 degrees so the conditions may have played a part in that. I’ve been looking at these for ages and now have saved up enough money to buy a hot hatch. Things like servicing and general running costs concern me but I’ve seen some videos that have eased that, honestly doesn’t seem too bad to run and if you buy a hot hatch you’re always gonna be paying more running costs which I’m fine with (as long as they’re not eye watering). I am thinking of servicing with a specialist rather than main dealer as it will be cheaper and I’ve been taking my current bmw there and they have been great. If anyone has any insight into running an M140i daily in 2023 please do share!

I like the 15 second elevated rev startup from cold, reminds me of my Audi TT only it last more like 20-30 seconds on facelift petrol TT TFSI.

Good vid, nice and simple for people to understand, my m140 is stock looking to get a mp exhaust after lockdown is all over etc. good colour choice, the strips a strip do what you want its your car .
Personally a fan of the stripes, I was going to like the video but in this case I won’t simply because I think you should keep them if you like them! They add that bit of difference imo

I've had my 140i for over 3 years now, and this guy is talking absolute crap! Twitchy - no, solid as a rock, holds the road like glue, if you plan the line properly and don't steer like a prat! Understated - yes but that's the point! Exhaust rattle - NO, no rattles anywhere, after 40K miles, tight as a proverbial! Internal equipment - excellent, sat nav great, music centre bloody brilliant, full volume AC/DC with no distortion! MPG - for a 3 litre straight 6, the MPG is amazing. Best car I have ever owned by a long way.
I kind of suspected that.Am currently looking into swapping my 330D X Drive for the M140i Shadow Edition.Thanks for the info !

The great thing about the M140i is the subtlety. Understated. Not shouty. If you want that, buy a Civic or a Focus.

Love the car, waiting for more videos on it. Surely if you need apple car play that bad you would of bought 1 with pro nav, can't be a bad reason not to buy a 140, you chose poverty spec 😂
I think you should of had pro nav fitted before some of the other mods if it's that big a deal for you.
I waited a month to find the perfect 140 for me with all the extras I wanted like adaptive, harman kardon, pro nav etc.
Next mod for you - pro nav/ install with apple car play!
Luke, I’ve been a follower for a while now and as usual liked your video - but please ditch the vinyl on the sides and the lights. Rattle is on the standard valve exhaust, a combination of replacement back-box, software update or M-Performance exhaust has been the official fixes. 1 series had its first LCI in 2016 with the launch of the M140i and the second LCI in 2018 with the Shadow Editions, OPF and radiator rock guards (June 2018) on the M140i

I recently had an opportunity to track a new Supra with the B58 engine. I found it to be a thoroughly fabulous drivers car. Can anyone compare the driving experience of the M140 to the Supra? I’d be keen to get a comparison.
1. I don’t think they’re that sketchy. You just can’t drive it as tho it’s 4wd. 2 you can get it coded it only costs £100. 3 I didn’t have any rattle issues with the mpe but is a known fault. 4 black it all out and it makes it a little more appealing but it’s a wolf in sheep’s coding. 5 it’s what you pay for so you can’t really expect great MPG. Will have another as there’s nothing that compares for the money

Which car with that kind of performance has better fuel economy and is not a diesel? I am always impressed by the economy of the M140, especially compared to the 2l Turbos i drove before.

Great vid, thanks. Don't get rid of the stripes! They make it go faster? I've got an idea for you. Keep the stripe & de-badge it. Then you can piss people off that think its just a normal, basic & boring 1 series! One thing that you didn't mention is if it has the indicator upgrade (i.e it has them) & the drivers are intelligent enough to know how to use them! All the best....

Interior is great but all the trim rattles p1ss me off, and my old E91 touring was a lot quieter.
I had the cold start deleted when I had it remapped, not needed, and just annoying leaving for work at silly o'clock in the morning.
Prefer the standard look, and mines not a shadow, as everyone tries to be 'different' de-chroming and now it's common !
I do like the side skirts on yours though, and it's one of the things I'd consider, even though I'm more a fan of the sleeper look.
I'm averaging 28.2 mpg LOL, maybe it's not just you 'youngsters' that put your foot down (I'm 50) :-))

How does the LSD play with the traction control which has been carefully calibrated to an open differential? Is there any remapping involved? I imagine that much of the TC programming is there solely to negate and optimise the open differentials response to any adverse condition with mind blowing algorithms calibrated to the tiniest units of time, speed, loading etc etc.
There could be potential for a dangerous conflict with both the TC and LSD overlapping in their function. There's potential for them to compliment each other too. I would like to do this upgrade if there are no doubts about it's safety/feasibility.. Decided to get an M140i in the near future... Thanks for your input when deciding between the GT86 and M140i in previous comments.
great video, I'm thrilled you're getting rid of the stripes...I recently swapped my 2018 M140i for an M4 Comp - the main reason why - I got frustrated seeing M140is with terrible mods...get it looking like the sleeper car that M140is are meant to be!

Iv got the facelift M135i and my Dad has the M140i and I have to say the M135i sounds much more raw and throaty whereas the M140i is a little more grown up.
I don't own this car but I know that the rattle is on the standard exhaust NOT the M Performance exhaust. In fact the M performance exhaust is the fix as it doesn't have the switchable valve which is what causes the rattle, not the clamps. I like your videos but you've got to do your research as these basic mistakes are what brings out the haters!
retrological The m performance exhaust has the occasional rattle as well. I have had both standard and MPE.

I'm driving a M140i myself and have 2 remarks: 1) It's not twitchy at all. I'm sorry, but if the M140i is twitchy, you've never driven a twitchy car! 2) Fuel economy is awesome: It all depends on the driving, but for a 3L R6 engine with this much power, the fuel economy is best in class.
Agreed. This is what happens when you go from the somewhat dull, uninspired nature of the golf r’s driving dynamics to a proper RWD drivers car. If you’re thinking the car is twitchy then you’re trying to drive it like a 4WD.

@@icecold4085basically flooring it on corners, coming out of corners or in bad weather conditions, since this is rear wheel drive it twitches if u try floor it on corners with traction on which means u have to control it back into straight

32 mpg or 7.4L/100km is great for a 3.0 I6 T, my E82 120d is currently at 8.2L/100km, but I guess I'm only doing short runs and literally no highway driving

I know some people upgrade the with android auto, this requires a replacement aftermarket screen.
I have one of these and you make me laugh about mpg. In 2008 I had a vauxhall omega 2.5 v6. I used to average 11mpg on that with f@#k all bhp. This m140i mpg to power is amazing. I had a 2009 s3 and drove to le mans in 2010, averaged 24mpg. Just think a little

BMW did an update on mine and it stopped rattling. Standard exhaust rather the MPE

Have to agree the interior feels dated (I've come from a mk7. 5 gti) plenty of clicky buttons not as much space for bits n bobs and the plastic feels cheap, I drive is decent tho.
fuel economy is only a problem if you make it one, like you i drive mine how it should be..... which gives me an average of about 20 mpg :') i prefer smiles per gallon personally....

Driving it on sport plus is the only way! Car was so well balanced on the limit I actually miss it, I liked it more than my M4 comp if truth be told
I completely disagree, I think the car falls to bits at the limit, at least with the standard suspension. It's too "floaty". I think a lot of people agree which is why is often called an 8 tenths car
D Jibby if it were a track car I would agree, but it’s a road car - you shouldn’t expect more than that. With the adaptive suspension it is more than capable and handles very well, especially up against the M4 Comp an C63 I had
@@moa6324 it's not just on a track I think it starts to come undone, it's on b roads, particularly uneven roads, it's just too softly sprung.
It is hard to find the right balance for everyday driving but I think it's a bit of a weird car to be honest. Its got a 3 litre straight 6 so you'd imagine performance would be the main focus but it feels like they've just dropped a big engine in a regular hatchback for bragging status in my opinion.
Theres too much weight over the front axle because of the big engine. Most people buying them want to drive them properly, it's a 340bhp rwd car so to have such a commuter friendly setup seems a bit odd.
I've got one so I'm not hating on the car, I just think it's bad "on the limit" which you obviously disagree with. Interesting that the M4 seems worse than the 140i though! I dont imagine the M4 is that much faster - do you regret switching?
I was going for the m4 from the m135i you have made my mind up keep the m135i all its got is a twin turbo

BMW’s VANOS is great, if you are calm with the car it will get great mileage for a turbo 3L... but we obviously don’t want to drive them calm much lol

Get CarPlay added in. It’s not that difficult.
Personally I preferred the BMW interior to that of the Golf with a much nicer driving position. I felt like I could get much lower. Maybe I’m a grumpy old bugger but I like those aged buttons; I’d rather those than touchscreens.
