Ok, I guess that Rutherford once said that "... if you cannot explain something in simple words, then perhaps you have not fully understood it" I don't even think that it is a question of visual effects. Today with CGI and some imagination. Jules Verne was so clear and simple that he was labeled as for a child target, but he was not... Movies are the most successful industries of this century. But when you need a large budget things might become very difficult.
Alberto Adrián Schiano Yo hoo! A giant leap for mankind! Of all the Star Trek series I've seen, only one had a truly innovative concept of alien life n technology. Others were just a procession of humanoids who were humans really, not to mention with American accents! Total lack of imagination, with a sameness to the story lines done to death. Totally enthralled by telescope. They don't have time travellers of the future with humans dressed in 1960's ill-fitting retro outfit like in Star Trek. This is how I like my sc-fis, with imaginative, innovative story lines n science, fresh, crisp script, and not a scene wasted. Hollywood should lift their game, although they still make a few entertaining movies. Star Wars for example have been done to death!
Yes i dont know why this Amateur ShortFilms dont get published in a longer Version i mean lots of them are much better then the SciFi Movies from the professionells
Louella Wilson sorry , but aliens were humanoids because of cost. for example original star trek series, 50,000 to 75,000 per episode. no cgi. Studio intervention. you get the idea.
I love a film that can say more with silence then words, or convey complex emotions & feelings without endless banter or without the monologue crutch. Its always nice to see something that might have come from one of my dreams.
Who cares what these "haters" think? I personally think it was visually stunning, with a compelling musical score that helped convey a sense of loneliness and longing for what has been lost, and the search to find it again; I appreciate the works of up-and-coming artists, no matter the medium. Keep up the good work, people!
Mark Bolton I also meant for what it was worth. Left that out by accident.. Either way, I think they have potential to do some good films/shorts if they keep it up.
James Haulk I hear you, but I care what they think and so do you or you wouldn't have brought it up. Ignore them if you don't care. Why give TROLLS the satisfaction? You made some valid comments but some of the negative remarks were just as valid. Criticism is important whether good or bad. Without it there can be no improvement.
But..... it sucked. The end made no sense. The effects werent good either. Its like just lie and say it was good because atleast they tried. Now everybody go head and call me a hater for telling the truth.
I found this very interesting, the concept of traveling faster than light away from the Earth to view the Earth was an interesting one to me. The representation of the black hole was more realistic than "Disneys" and the effects were nicely done.
+tcreekr Uh yeah guys that wasn't a black hole. A black hole as hinted by the name would be completely black. It was a planetary nebula. apod.nasa.gov/apod/image/1407/ngc2818_hubble_2145.jpg scienceblogs.com/startswithabang/files/2012/04/Solar_Life_Cycle-600x148.png The Sun is expected to turn into a red giant then explode into a supernova and wipe out the solar system then turn into a planetary nebula with the remnants of the solar system. Cheery right?
tcreekr You'd be blasted with a lot of harmful radiation. Not to mention that the sun (or planetary nebula in this case) will have a very big difference in gravity so. . . I'm pretty sure nobody's going to survive being blasted with radiation, burned alive and then being sucked into a planetary nebula.
do a lot of people dont get the point of this, so I'll explain as best i understood it. the guys narrative at the end basically said, as men on earth dream of travelling the stars, men that travel the stars will dream of returning to earth. the operator was from a time almost 200 years from right now, and most likely dreamed of seeing our home planet in its youth. being that thT was his dream, he risked everything just to get a glimpse of our beautiful blue ball of life...
he is either: 1. Trying to see earth how it was back before it was destroyed 2. travel back in time to earth, if you're traveling faster than light, your seeing light from the past
RebelOfTheNorm242 This is a story as old as time itself, the human's eternal quest for the answer " who are we and where did we come from?". Astro-physicists postulates that it is feasible to travel back in time and to the future at the event horizon of a black hole, provided we have the technology not to be sucked into the black hole. This is what the time traveler did. He risked everything to have a glimpsed of the once pristine earth. I think he died at the end but he fulfilled his quest. Enthralling n great!
With limited resources you use what works. Sometimes simple and antiquated is more reliable and if you did not notice that ship was beat up. Looked like it had been through some shit and was still moving.
So, 500 years from now, scientific research is _still_ not getting enough funding ;-) I do agree that the interior detracts from the verisimilitude, but I'm old enough that the nostalgia is pleasant. I'd like to know where the junkyard is that they scrounged the old equipment from: it'd be fun to do some steampunk-style design with it. I guess you'd call it "nukepunk"?
For those who enjoyed the fantastic soundtrack (composed by Zach Robinson and Doug Kaplan), credits theme by Ken Ross; you are likely to also to enjoy Kevin Braheny's album - The Way home (1984) and Galaxies. Much by John Serrie like his exceptional song, Eye of the Beholder conjures similar magic.
Beautiful! It is difficult to find good sci fi movies, short or regular. This one is a treat! Lead me to a little wonderful introspection. I watched it before reading the description, not knowing he is an archaeologist. Not being aware his drive was fueled to get answers or to find solutions, but just imagining he had a primordial yearning for his original home...like an orphan or an adopted child yearning for his natural parents. But I guess that could also work for the archaeologist too. It made me want to know a little bit more about him; for instance, the origin of the little Earth drawing. Great film. Congratulations and thank you for sharing it!
Technically a great short. Cinematography, sound, acting, and totally implausible retro feel all done to such a high standard. This is clearly not a hard science film - but space opera. And a very good one at that.
A thousand words in a few minutes! Seeing this dramatic futuristic vision from one man's mind, painted in another's, as if magically by telepathy, is a dream nearly realized in Film. I am an author of both sci-fi books and Audiobooks, so when I paint visions they are more likely as you see them, than as I did. The magical achievement here, is to more closely conform this beautiful transmission of emotional and visual conception to you and in very short order. As they say, a picture can be worth a thousand words. I think it was excellent! Janr Ssor
By far, one of my favorite shorts! "As men tied to the Earth, we dream of visiting the stars. As men tied to the stars, we will dream of returning home." 🏹🏴🎯
The future of film just got a little more promising! Loved this video! Sad, lonely and hopeful. I watched it twice. Thanks for your hard work and imagination!
I watch alot of You Tube shorts and animation and I have to say this is one of the best I seen in a long while. Well done all around with theme, graphics, score and of course story I'm putting this on my watch again list
One cannot deny the silent protagonist in this film, his feeling of hope yet alone one human strives for the appropriate space\time to exist prior to our species destruction. Incredible score gives the viewer a feeling of being this one human with nothing but hope.
Watched the creators talk about making the film and the HDR involved at NAB 2014. Was fascinated and very enthused about the possibilities for future filmmakers. And the short is quite good, with fantastic visuals and color exploration!
I much prefer these wonderful things be short films. I feel like an idea like this wouldn't work so well in a longer format. This is fantastic as it is, short and moving. It helps that it also had pretty good production value. Great job to the team!
the music reminds me of the first mass effect atmosphere of the different planets you went to. Loved the short and really loved the music..if you want the soundtrack email them where it tells you their email under details or info and they will quickly email you back with a link where you can download it for free.
Excellent production very good work from actors, animation, special effects, and voice-overs. Hope to see much of this talent in future productions backed by serious producers.
This is one of my favourite sci fi shorts. Haunting and poignant. Clever and excellent. Visuals and score simply awesome. Looking forward to more treats from you guys.
I mean this in the most endearing way I can possibly fathom. I WISH I were stoned right now, just so I could be blank enough to internalize everything that this is. This is speechless in it's simplicity, yet still it holds magnificence and splendor that of which I simply cannot come to terms with. Even with the clarity of a sober mind.
Honestly, that's what I call a cool story bro. Such a riveting tale, I honestly copy and pasted it to MS Word, saved it on my hard drive, backed it up on a jump drive, drove to the bank, put the jump drive in a safe deposit box, and I will leave it there until my kids turn about 12 (when they can actually state their age, and ask what it is I'm showing them), then I will pick it up, put it in an old USB drive reader and relay this cool story to them and tell them, "kids, this is what a cool story should look and sound like...not like the stories your generation tells.
Such a terrific flic. Great job all involved. Visually stellar, lots of retro elements and a score that fit extremely well. And the narration was spot on, great voice whoever that is.
a lot of people make light of this subject even though its probably the #1 thing that will destroy, not only our species, but the rest of the planet along with us. We are the only ones that can consciously make a decision to save our future from the looming doom before us. I constantly hear that "we dont have to worry, we wont see this happen to us in our lifetime so why worry?" The problem is already all around us. Open your eyes before they are forced closed forever. This was a great vid, thanks for your work!
To the talented team that pulled this one together Awesome Job!! Good storytelling, set design and cinematography!!! And to those armchair director wannabes that don't like this one...if you can do better, get off your @$$ and do it !!!
I just watched this short again after a long time since seeing it the first time. Still impressed. I would love to see this story extended. Great work.
Bravo for real! This was amazing. Made me feel like I was eight and watching Alien for the first time, stylistically. It made me feel of my age and in awe at the universe when I read some deep non-fic, theme-wise.

i cried and yes it was beautiful. Even if i left earth coming home will be the greatest of joys and the most frighting of experiences for what if home was gone. i think i would die from grief.
i would love it if Hollywood would take this short and extend it to a full length movie..with lots dialogue and start from the beginning on how life don't exist anymore in the future..
I had a dream where I was looking through a telescope. I thought it was possible to teleport to what I was looking at involving quantum entanglement. I woke up thinking of this film I saw a couple of years ago. in my dream I didn't realize the further I was away from the object the older it would be. watching this film again confused me at first but after pondering a minute it all made sense. This Is A Wonderful Film Made By Very Smart People! My absolute favorite dream to date. Wish I had more of them.
For a planet to become truly barren all life must be lost. Not just that but every amount of life creating substance and a rearrangement of the solar system. What we do is neither hurting or caring for the planet unless you hurt or care for the life upon its surface. A planet is lifeless and changes constantly. It is the lifeforms upon them that are able to feel.
Anton Masloski but ultron referred the dead planet for all the living organisms completely extinct with no more conditions for any kind of life (exept bacteria)
Beautiful, absolutely stunning. The concept isn't realistic, as neither is the depiction of DSO's, but in the genre of science fiction that's nothing to shake a stick at. :)
I got a bit worried with the first title "the earth is dead", as I like to make sci-fi films that has positive vision of the future. However I do like the story in this film. Awesome how they did it with minimal dialogue, it looks great. The science of looking back through time is just mind blowing. Love the ending. I agree with Skipper the retro look brings back memories of 70's and 80's sci-fi look. Well done, awesome film :)
Very good story and presentation. I LIKE that it had a partial ending rather than just an abrupt cutoff. Another minute to set the scene of the traveler's background and intent would be good.
I believe the story is as follows: Some may say human kind possesses an insatiable curiosity about where he/she came from and is going. Some people who think deeply about their place in the universe, who realize that their lives are a minute blip in time and space. Some people have a systems thinking approach whose explanations must transcend common wisdom and clarify the big picture. I believe the character in this film is attempting to capture some information about Earth's past that may help to explain his existence and, thereby clarify his purpose. It could be argued that the purpose of his ship is to explore humanity or (his) place in space and time. The future of humanity, one without Earth, may have a disjointed and unclear view of their origins given the current state of the planet Earth at the beginning of the film. Is it unreasonable to suppose that he is part of a cause, one which provided him with the means (the ship and telescope) to look back and attempt to uncover human identity? A humanity without a home (such as Earth) may have need for a unifying goal or endeavor. His reason for utilizing the last of his energies may hinge upon the nature of his mission or purpose. The information he gathers may be invaluable to the general remaining population of humans... or perhaps it's just a trivial dramatic decision (seems highly unlikely). I believe the "old guy in the telescope" represents us, human nature, the insatiable and transcendent need to know and explore that seems to be embedded in our makeup. The difference between the main character and the "old guy in the telescope" is nothing except time. The goal is the same, the longing is the same, the need to belong and understand is the same...the telescopes are two sides of the same coin divided by time. And one might say by gazing upon oneself from both ends, we close the loop and find our purpose. I feel this film has one of the STRONGEST plots/points of any short film I've watched on here. This is a timeless story, told with grace (no unnecessary dialogue or antics) and beautiful effects. I feel echoes of COSMOS (Carl Sagan).
It is happening!
Amateur SciFi movies are becoming better than commercial ones.
Agreed!

this is just beautiful i love the determination in the actor's face you can see all he wants is to go home
Beautiful in full screen!
An elegant simple story deserves elegant simple praise. Kudos and thank-you.
Magical and immensely sad at the same time...the music helped with its celestial air...Bravo!
Very nice short. It's amasing when you think about how many people, the time, and talent it takes to make such a film of just over 9 minutes.
I really like the retro feel of the ship's inside and exterior... awesome job on the film.

humans should learn from this
i truly admire the creators
this was such a wonderful and meaningful short
Interesting and nicely done. Loved the narrator, both his voice and what he said, and how he was used to bookend the story.
Loved the colorful, retro look and sound of this piece. Good job!
I love it. The music fits perfectly. The story is amazing.
Bravo for real! This was amazing. Made me feel like I was eight and watching Alien for the first time, stylistically. It made me feel of my age and in awe at the universe when I read some deep non-fic, theme-wise.
Wow. Absolutely Hollywood quality.
Profound story line, excellent execution. Great job!
Wow, now that was a great 09:57 experience. Beautiful set design and graphics. But I was most impressed by the silent acting of the pilot. He really hit the 4th wall. Also very well directed. All the elements fit. A big ole like to ya'll.

Thank you!!! Glad you liked it.
incredibly inventive platform to tell your story. Thanks so much for all the hard work you put in to it, it was inspiring
i cried and yes it was beautiful. Even if i left earth coming home will be the greatest of joys and the most frighting of experiences for what if home was gone. i think i would die from grief.
I've been watching all these sci-fi short films wondering why they aren't full length movies! We must give them all of our monies.
A visual masterpiece! Kudos!

Very Good. I am glad to stumble across the short films. Look forward to full length films.
This is bloody beautiful!! Thanks!
the Visual effects for these movies are crazy
Beautiful, clever, very touching. Liked the cockpit design.
A stunning piece of Science Fiction. I loved every moment!
well, if we ALL dont react soon, this wont be science fiction, this will be the truth

Wonderful film! Aw inspiring!
One of the best short films I have seen..
This was ridiculously good
Beautiful.
I love the whole concept of seeing into the Earth's past by simply warping to where those photons are
genius idea, wonderfully executed
A very moving film... i almost shed a few tears...
It is a film deep for thought. It is there for exploration, to search for something bigger we cannot comprehend
The plot is fantastic and one of a kind !
Excellent work. !!! Tahk you very much
Incredible, best short film i have ever witnessed
Best short film so far
Excellently done! Agree with Mesha, initially I thought it was rather common plot, but I was hooked by the end.
Amazing truly thankyou for creating such a beautiful short film. i loved this
ABSOLUTELY ASTOUNDING!!!!!!!!
Reminds me of the mobile game "Opus-The Day We Discovered Earth" with similar storyline. Stunning video!
Very beautiful! I enjoyed that silent trip very much... yen to see distant places...thank you! To the other guys, turn of your mind and feel...
Pure awesome!
What an awesome narrators voice!
Outstanding! Thank you.
The voice over is the best part.
well done good show great picture with good sound = thank you.
This was cool. Left me wanting more, but also left enough to the imagination, so I could develop a kind of bond with it.
absolutely wonderful
This was a really good short film! Wasn't expecting that
AWESOME..great music as well.
