Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf- Nuggets vs. Bulls, '95-'96 Season (Highlights / Nuggets End Bulls Win Streak)

  • Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf scores 32 points (including some clutch late-game shooting) and dishes 9 assists, as the Nuggets defeat the Bulls at McNichols Sports Arena in Denver, February 4, 1996. Longtime Bulls broadcasters Wayne Larrivee and Johnny 'Red' Kerr on the call for WGN Sports.
    This is certainly one of Abdul-Rauf's more noteworthy NBA games, not just because of his stat line, but because the Nuggets' victory snapped the Bulls' franchise-record 18-game winning streak. The Bulls still went on to set a then all-time best regular season record of 72-10 and win the 1996 NBA Championship.

      Because he set an example of what great basketball players can do if they disagree with their country's government. Can you imagine even 5 players in the NBA protesting the national anthem due to their governments policy? It might be a domino effect. They put a stop to that real fast. It was made clear to me when one owner said "we dont want him and it has nothing to do with his game either." Owners have "owners meetings" periodically where they discuss trends and issues pertaining to the NBA.

    I think Phil was talking about style.Which he is right. Man imagine Mahmoud's stats if he played today and Robert Pack had the three point shooting ability of Klay. Three pointers weren't embraced those days as they are today. Steph is a great player but to say he did not learn the game from others and it is impossible take aspects of others game is LUDICROUS! He is not a God. Steph is an all time 3 point shooter but give Mahmoud respect too. Stop disrespecting others just cause you love Steph. People on twitter tryna slander Mahmoud as if he wasn't a 90's great.

      +CKL EVERYTHING Phil is right, Rauf was a lot like Curry. Super quick release. Due to his disease, he had perfected his shot in a way no one else of his era had. He was also a couple inches shorter than Curry.

      +CKL EVERYTHING What are you talking about, crazy man? Steph - or any of the warriors players - have not said a word about anything; the era comparisons have come from bitter older players (oscar robertson, kareem, thomas, cedric ceballlos, etc.) who, for whatever reason, feel their personal and/or team legacies are threatened by Stephs greatness. Thats it.

    • @paulb10486
      @paulb10486 8 років тому +6

      CKL EVERYTHING The three point shot wasn't used bc 1.) it didn't exist, and/or 2) they didn't know how to leverage it properly. The long-distance shot is a very fundamental part of todays game, not because it's "cool," but the influence it has in the way you can space players and score at a much more efficient rate. Thats just a fact. The players today - players, mind you, who are bigger, longer, faster, stronger, more athletic, and more efficient due to the advent of analytics - would have very little trouble with players in Oscars day assuming their level of play and style did not change. Its that simple. How we love to romanticize a past we don't understand...

    I keep telling people that Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, nee Chris Jackson, is as pure a basketball shooter as I have ever seen. You maybe can shoot as good as him, but there isn't an efficient stroke of the basketball jump shot like that of Mahmoud. Steph definitely has more range, but this jump shot was deadly upon pull-up...I'm Just Sayin...

    I saw him put up 50 points in one half in high school. One of the greatest players I've seen in person. Great work ethic. He wouldn't have been black balled the way he did in today's game for that national anthem bs. He had Turrets Syndrome and still couldn't be stopped. this man once like like 270 something straight free throws in high school. He is a living legend

    • @chriswebster24
      @chriswebster24 2 роки тому

      I hit 280 in a row when I was in middle school, but 270 definitely isn’t bad, though, even for a high school player. A lot of guys can hardly make 250 in a row at that age.
      Most people don’t understand what it’s like, because they’ve never experienced the pressure of having the ball in their hands when the game is on the line, and 10’s of thousands of screaming fans are on their feet, watching as you prepare to shoot 2 deciding free throws, against your team’s biggest rival, to either win or lose the state championship, for your team, and your school, as well as your city.
      They have no idea what it’s like to have all the hopes snd dreams, not only of your teammates and coaches, but of every man, woman, and child in your entire town depending on you, with no time left on the clock,with your team down by 1 point, and with all the hot cheerleaders watching nervously, with sweat pouring off their little wet bodies, dripping from their tight, skimpy cheerleading uniforms, and soaking into their warm, promiscuous teenage underwear.
      They don’t know what it’s like, knowing that your dad just took out all the money he had in his life savings, plus every last cent the bank would possibly loan him, based on the value of his house, and then bet every drop of it on your team to win.
      They don’t know how difficult it is to shoot free throws, knowing that the pride of your town, the future of your school, and the love of all your family, friends, slutty cheerleaders, and classmates, as well as your family’s home, depends on you making them, but, believe it or not, it’s not quite as easy as it looks, for real.
      Now, I’m not saying it’s hard or anything, so don’t get me wrong. It’s definitely nothing close to like how Shaq always made it look-I swear, that ninja looked like it was the first time he’d ever touched a basketball, in his life, every time he had to shoot one-No, they are very easy, obviously. All I’m saying is that they can, at times, be somewhat more difficult than they look. There’s still no excuse for ever missing one, though. Only a total spaz would do that.

      Look at the playoff games off Knicks, Pacers, Pistons (early 90's) for a better idea. This is a typical regular season game. I've been watching basketball since the late 80's. Having said that I still don't agree that our top players today would not do well back then. The games were brutal and low scoring, but I actually think that Curry would still have thrived in that era. Hard to stop a guy who launches contested threes from well beyond the arc at a high percentage. I just appreciate the amazing shooting clinic that Curry is putting on now. M.A.R. looks a little like Curry when he was on fire. Curry this season is doing it consistently every night.

Fourteen years later and Phil brings up this guys name which led me to this video here. Only played like 6 or 7 years? No wonder I couldn't find him. Stephen A. Smith and Skip don't know what the hell they're talking about. Phil was on point. This is why I don't listen to pointless critics. Curry has a ton more handles than Adbul, and has a quicker release. Bulls would have had a hard time guarding the warriors, but the warriors would have a hard time with Jordan. Not so much pippen. I think Green can guard pippen. 7 game series Warriors can win because the bulls would be to tired running around the screens to get to Klay and Curry. Warriors bench definitely has the edge. More skilled players, and ex starters coming from the bench.

      +M Sar I agree about Jordan, because everyone has a hard time with Jordan. However, Klay is Jordan's size and also quick and a plus defender. I think Klay would at least make him work for his points, with help from others of course.

    People who always say that the NBA played better Ds need to stop "repeating" this statement and actually take time to watch those films. Modern athletes have better nutrition, better coach, better technology and better training. Everything is better because the game has evolved. I watched a finals game a while ago to watch Jerry West play. He dribbled with his right hand almost 80% of the time. The level of competition is at all time high. If you take any elite player back to that time, he would just destroy the league 20 years ago.
    This bulls CANNOT guard Stephen Curry. I don't know the outcome if the bulls play the warriors but I know by looking at this that no one will be able to guard him. For god's sake, every shot Steph took last week was probably more close-guarded than this weak perimeter defense.
    MJ would still be a superstar in today's league. But the league 20 years ago is no match against today's NBA, not even close.

I hate hate hate when people say players like lebron, kd, Dwade, Stephen curry or whoever it may be wouldn't be able to score back then. Like fuckkkkk no! They'd torch the hell out of these defenses. If you don’t think Steph would kill in the 90’s era you’re basically saying Steve Kerr is too physical for him & is capable of locking him up and that’s laughable...we’re talking about the best pure shooter of all time while also being one of the best ball handlers of all time and can move off the ball c’mon! In this era guards like Kerr could survive by being efficient at one thing, shooting. In today’s nba guards have to be so multidimensional, shoot, pass, make plays, defense, control tempo or they won’t survive, there is no room to hide inefficiencies in today’s league. Steph, Kyrie, Lillard, Wall, Russ, Harden, CP3, Lou Williams, would all be brought up on chargers in this era.

    Style of play very similar but Rauf was a national all american in high school and college protege. He was traded after his best season and rules with hand checking different in 90's. Best percentage from free throw line ever in history but needed 30 more to be in record books. I agree, if Rauf played in this style and given more playing time as he did in college easy 25 to 30 points per game. No one can stop him period. He shot over Malone, Mason who was 6 foot 7 and 250 lbs, Penny Hardaway, Jordan. You name them Rauf has videos destroying them.
    Remember in 95-96 only Jordan and Richmond more efficient in points per minute till half way thru season when he playing time went down due to controversy.
    Agree Rauf faster, jumped higher, and quicker release but only 6 foot and 155 lbs so Curry much bigger and has strength and closer to Nash.

    That shooting stroke is definitely similar and I believe that was part of Jackson's point. He certainly couldn't mean Curry and Abdul-Rauf are on the same level because Curry's career 3pt% is about 9 percentage points better than Adbul Rauf's.

    This is an example on why you can’t assume players from past eras couldn’t hang today. Sometimes, the league just isn’t ready or hasn’t evolved yet…. He’s every bit or more as talented as Steph curry, but no coach was ready to start having their PG Jack 9 3s a game. The rules didn’t cater to the perimeter game yet. Pace was slower etc…. But it’s clear as day, he coulda dominated in todays game and he come along later.
