      As a female in my 60's, training for 4 years, I am getting close to maxing out my TG even for the upper body, You need the weight bar

      @Nicksonian 8 місяців тому

      Yes, I am about maxing out my TG. I tried bands, didn't like them. I got two, 45-pound plates. Unfortunately, they're a tad big. They work, but I should have gotten more, smaller plates because the big plates hit the floor.

    Having replaced a bunch of bumper plates with classic old school cast iron, not only to relive my earliest training years type nostalgic reasons you mention (sound, feel , look, etc) but also for the saved space, longevity, etc, I completely identify with your reasoning. As an interesting sidenote; it was actually taking a pause from the barbell and playing with the Total Gym trying to get a nagging shoulder back to health that revived my interest in bodybuilding type training rather than the strength training I'd been doing for so long and classic plates were a big part of that.

      I can relate to that as I’m sure many of the channel can as well. I think it’s always great to mix it up in the home gym to keep things fresh and interesting. One of the biggest things I always warn the one on one clients who pick up a total gym is to do whatever they can to avoid the possibility of getting bored just using a Sliding bench trainer.

    Love the video. I got the same squat rack that you have and for reference you have the posts oriented backwards. If you change it to where they are oriented the other way around, you can use the j hooks on the front in that are and won't be hindered. I made the same mistake when building it.

    Bumper plate size on the Total Gym. I will never work out with free weights, but I wanted to try putting bumper plates on my Total Gym. I previously tried bands and didn't like how they felt and found them to be awkward and marginally unsafe. Having seen the 45-pound plates on here, I decided to order two (of the cheaper, three-spoke, one-inch hole variety which are fine). Besides the small adjustment curve, the biggest issue is that the 45-pound plates are too big. They're usable, but you have to pull a bit before they leave the floor. I wish that I'd gotten four smaller plates.

    I see you have the Total gym GTS. 💪
    Did you know you can do bench press on the Total gym? 😉
    Put the cable UNDER the pipe lay your back on the board, grab the cables from underneath the pipe and press UP. 💯
    Tip: please make sure you have CLAMPS on the ends of the pipe. You don't want weights or cable or both sliding off the edge. 🙏

    These plates are so much more affordable nowthan a few years ago when I was gonna order them. I was gonna order 750lb and back then shipping was like $90 per plate from CA. It was gonna be $1450 in just shipping. Now they have shipping in the Midwest and south east so not it like $14-15 per plate much more affordable and now less than Rogue deep dish or USA iron plates

    I bought alot of cheap plates.....hit and miss on quality...all my bumpers, my cheap 45s, and all my 10s were within a pound...my 25s were 3 pounds off. They're identical to your cheap plates with the handles.... Ironically all my cap plates are dead on. I need more 45s now...probably going to buy something nicer...either track down some vintage Yorks, or buy rogue/strength co

    • @hybridresistance

      Thanks for sharing that. 3 pounds off is a decent amount. I had intentions of checking my weights but just didn’t get around to it. But reading this you’re motivating me to check it out later today.

    I’m 61 years old now
    Weights hurt my joints and ligaments
    I’ve been working out with suspension trainer
    And it’s been great
    I wish I found it years ago
    Does this mean that you’re going back to weights?

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  8 місяців тому

      Suspension trainers are great. Like I was saying in the video, I'll be adding weights back getting back up to weight I was playing with before. It felt surprising felt very good squatting 315 again even after all that time away from it. But I'll basically just be mixing it with everything else that have.

    Strength Co weights sometimes won't fit onto certain barbells or other instruments.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  12 днів тому

      This is very true. I'm finding this a problem with certain weight loaders getting stuck with these weights.

    Are there pros and cons to cheap bumper weights if you are just a power lifter with a power cage? I'm just starting a garage gym with a range of 265 lbs on the bench press.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  2 дні тому

      The bumbers can sometime be cheaper than iron weights, but the other draw is that you don't have to worry too much about damaging them or your floor. These are actually really cheap right now on amazon amzn.to/3USafsO

  • @bobbyhunt3009
    @bobbyhunt3009 8 місяців тому

    Good Gracious, these things cost anywhere from $2.20 perlb to $15 per lb on the lower weight denominations
    (1.25 lb, 2.5 lb, 5 lb,)
    No reason in the world to pay that high amount of money for Iron plates.
    Only people who want to show off their expensive equipment would buy those, not true lifters, plus shipping is not included on strength co equipment is it, old my god. People buy these to say they have them. People buy old school iron plates with Standard written on the side if they dont care to show off but just lift and get strong.
    You know I am right, whether you admit it or not.

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  8 місяців тому +1

      Your welcome to your opinion brother, but I obviously disagree with you otherwise I wouldn’t have purchased them.

    • @taylorpark3544
      @taylorpark3544 8 місяців тому

      You'd be surprised what people will pay for. I can confirm from personal experience, cheap CAP or Hulkfit plates or just cheap plates in general will chip and rust MUCH MUCH faster over time compared to more expensive plates and the cheap plates often have AWEFUL sharp edges from the cast moldings compared to more moderately priced plates, also cheap coatings that chip are often sharp and cut you easily. Sure you can apply coatings and restore cheap plates, but its a pain in the butt and time consuming to do it properly, not to mention costly if you don't already have all the tools to do so.
      So if you have the money and want a better quality product, you'll need to pay for it up front and for the majority of people its worth the money.
      Trust me, I've used cheap vinyl concrete weight plates, cheap Yes4All plates, REP iron plates, and had a lot of experience handling and building many clients' home gyms with some nice plates by Rogue, Eleiko and more and the quality, feel and performance is different and there. The differences may not always be huge, but you can bet that more moderately priced plates will in fact last longer and be far more pleasant to work with compared to cheap plates.
      But yeah, check out any home gym community and they all pour a lot of money into their equipment and to say they aren't true athletes or bodybuilders just isn't true in most cases.
      That being said, there is nothing wrong with going cheap or minimalistic or doing what works for you, nor is there anything wrong with going all out and making a dream home gym with top brand equipment. I still love playing around with my dumb vinyl covered concrete plates on cheap bars, but I definitely prefer my Rep fitness rubber covered iron plates over the Yes4All or CAP plates for sure. They did their job when I needed them but I will be selling them since they've chipped and rusted, despite me being careful and kind to them. Humidity is just a real threat to iron over time, its inevitable.
      But all the best man, I hope you have fun with whatever you decide to work with.
      Strength Co. Has good quality and a nice look to them.

    Can I ask, is that always how you bench? Fast short reps then a full rep? I’ve never seen this before. Do you feel it works better for you overall?

    • @hybridresistance
      @hybridresistance  8 місяців тому

      I definitely mix it up. By default, when I'm doing reps in general on anything, I'm focusing on stressing the muscle through a blend of tempos and ROMs. If I was just training for raw strength gains, I'd stick to a formal static cadence, rep range, and ROM.

      Bodybuilders have been benching like this for decades. It's to maximize time under tension. Go watch someone like Jay Cutler bench.
