Would have been great if there was a voice over to explain what you’re doing. Having said that, what grit sandpaper did you use? Was that a stripper that used? And what type of wood filler/putty? Seriously, awesome job and I’m jealous!
Yes, this technique will work on ANY type of wood, but be very careful not to over steam. the Grain will also raise up a bit giving it a rough texture, but you will be sanding in the next step and that will level out. Again, all of the old finish must be removed for this technique to work. It will raise back to level. I do not recommend trying to do this for the scratch and dents on a "spot Fix" the whole piece must be sanded or stripped down to bare wood.
The wood fibres swell up from the water/steam. On solid wood it's quite a safe technique to use. On veneered wood like this you have to be careful, as this gentleman was. If you apply the heat for too long in one spot you can break the glue bond.
I see so many people trying to steam out scratches with finish still on the piece. I get so mad when I see it. Its not doing much unless its raw wood IMO
Occasionally I'll see an Eames Rosewood chair in a junk shop and think "That could be fixed." After watching the video, I can see that restoration is best left to professionals.
Anyone who ever sits in these chairs should be told to NOT PUSH ON THE ARMS when you stand up. Plenty of room on the front of the seat cushion to give yourself a boost. Pushing on the arms is what breaks them.
Not every chair needs shock mounts at restoration. This one was for a home owner who wanted it restored. The mounts were don’t recently in its past life.
Seeing the whole process broken down helps me plan my own setup. Thank you Aaron! Beautiful work.
Thanks!

Very nice!
Thank you! Cheers!
Curious to know how steaming removes dents and scratches. Getting ready to restore one myself.

100% accurate. Then add on pressboard.. that's even scarier!

What was the steam for?
Removing dents and scratches
So you stripped it rather than sand?
Always strip. Safer on the veneer

For a major overhaul I would recommend it. Simple clean up you could do!
This is my holy grail:)) but they are not so common in Europe:)
Ahhh I didn’t know that

The old shock mounts should have been replaced! The new owner will have one let go, and break the plywood.

@@johnkelly6942also plopping back in the chair will do it too
