Nearly bought one, still might buy one one day but I ended up getting an Ekornes Stressless recliner, the Reno specifically but many of them are also great. It is simply the best recliner. The green leather Eames chair is gorgeous, the blue too but the green is the one I would go with. I would not go with the fabric options, sat in them and they don't feel nearly as good as the leather. The Stressless leather is butter soft semi aniline leather, the chair is multi-positional and can recline flat and the ottoman can be unlocked and pivot back and forth, truly a superior recliner.
As a proud owner of the Eames Lounge Chair, configured with Walnut veneer and black all grain leather (tall version), I can tell any potential buyers the following: It is absolutely beautiful and can best be described as "functional art", as far as living room decor goes. Second, it is a lounge chair. Not an office chair, not a couch and not an armchair. Why people would buy this chair then complain about not being able to sit upright or leaning forward in it comfortably is beyond me. It's not designed for that, hence other types of chairs exist. If you are looking for a comfortable, incredibly well built, sturdy yet plush LOUNGE chair to relax in then you will be very happy with this purchase. It is my favorite chair to watch tv in, read in or just sit back and relax in while listening to my audio books/music. Every piece of this chair is individually replaceable, so as mentioned in the video it will outlast you and your children. Note, not just the cushions or arm rests but everything on that chair can be replaced or repaired. For reference, I am 6'1" tall and I like to slouch while relaxing in it and my head fits into the headrest area perfectly, there is no exaggerated head tilt back onto the edge of the wood "oh my God this is awful" type experience as illustrated in the video. Thats not a knock on the video, I understand he needs to review it from every angle and potential sitting position as possible, but again this is just not something that will happen in real life. Almost done here lol but I would just like to make a couple more points to help with anyone struggling to make a decision... The chair is set to a 15 degree angle, you can not change that but there is "give" to the chair, so its not like you're sitting against a wall. That angle is designed to provide maximum pressure relief on your spine and lower back (which it absolutely does) and has outstanding lumbar support when sitting in it properly. All of that being said, I also own a LazyBoy "Maverick" recliner and it is an entirely different kind of chair and experience. A chair I highly recommend if you're just looking for super plush and soft, rocking and reclining where, when reclined, your knees actually elevate above your waist line, taking ALL pressure off of them and can even position into "zero gravity". Basically, just decide what type of sitting/lounging experience you want to have on a daily basis when you get home and buy accordingly. Lastly, I got my Eames on sale for 20% off plus free shipping. This is a sale they run a few times per year. Sorry for the book long comment, I'm just trying to help people with making the right decision for themselves. Feel free to respond if you have any questions I didn't cover.
Hey buddy, it took me several years of pining after this chair before I was able to talk myself into buying it. Like I mentioned in my above comment, they do run sales and free shipping along with zero interest (through affirm) several times a year and I’m sure will continue to do so far into the future. For now, concentrate on your education and future and hopefully you’ll be in a position to buy this chair soon enough. Good luck with college and don’t forget to enjoy the hell out of it (everything goes so fast once life and careers meet)
I purchased a 1964 Eames Lounge Chair in an estate sale & just got it fully restored. It’s been a dream of mine to own one & seeing it restored had me on the moon.
My dad had one when I was growing up, not sure if it was real or not but it was lost before he past away when I was younger. One of those core memories for some reason. So it is a chair I would very much like to own one day for other reasons then just the beautiful aesthetic or status.
I have a similar color combination and my young child thought that the white surface resembled paper and took a black sharpie marker to it. Luckily, I caught him just in time to before he finished his Steinberg type drawing.
If he drew on it...I was going to say you know what to do...force feed that kid all kinds of ideas about being an artist and make sure he becomes famous...make that Eames a one of a kind art piece!! 🤣
I have one, love it. Also, highly disagree with getting the "tall size". Unless you are 6' 4", get the standard. FYI Charles Eames was 6' and the tall was only introduced later with the proliferation of basketball stars wanting this chair.
A couple of years ago I bought two Eames chairs during some redecoration ... I wanted them in a high end dedicated stereo room for listening. I returned both of them ... let me explain. First, until I watched this video I didn't know there were two different sizes, and I'm not sure which size I had. Here's my thoughts and conclusions: I loved the look. I did not like the comfort or the entry/egress difficulty. The chair was only comfortable and usable if the person is semi-reclined. And that is not enough flexibility of function for me to consider it enjoyable or generally usable. Upright conversation or reading of a book requires an uncomfortable and unsupported position. To arise from a chair requires one to move their center of gravity forward over their contact with the floor prior to extending the knees and hips (think about it) ... this is done unconsciously otherwise one would simply fall backwards when extending the legs. The tilt on this chair and the low height of the seat makes this egress somewhat difficult and awkward. I've gone on too long here and I will end my comments by saying: it is a very attractive and attention getting chair, but it is overall uncomfortable and only usable for semi-reclining and even then, only when you have no need to get up and sit back down often. I have thought about chair design quite a bit, and have even considered making my own design, but that impulse disappeared quickly. I am still looking for chairs which meet my expectations. I have seen commander's chairs on the bridge of military ships which seem to have many elements I seek, but these are unavailable.
I bought directly from a HM dealer a few hours away, and saved a substantial amount of money. Walnut shell, black leather, tall size. I'm 6'3, and I never found my aunt and uncle's original Rosewood chair to be comfortable. The tall version, however, is supremely comfortable. I also just love to look at it.
I bought a reproduction one of these a yr ago. It was a "tall" version. Really comfortable, but as your tall friend noted, when properly seated and leaning back, your head is looking up at the ceiling. I'm also 6', and it just didn't work for me. I ultimately opted to return the chair, but I would someday like to buy one again and try to custom design a matching headrest for it. It is a striking piece of furniture and a true work of art. I'll probably never own a genuine one cause I have cats and I know what would happen
I own three chairs which are high end replicas. If that's what you are after and you live in the UK I would 100% recommend getting them from Iconic Interiors. They have videos on youtube and the chairs I bought (last year) match the quality shown. There are also videos on youtube which compare cheap replicas to high end ones.
Why don't you buy a used rather than a new knockoff? Knock offs use cheaper materials. I have an Eames Chair and Ottoman from the 60's and it's still in excellent condition, a little wear, but not enough to worry about. There's some nicks hear and there in the plywood, but it's the Rosewood, which is discontinued by highly desirable. I'm sure you can find used Eames Chairs from Knoll rather than some cheap knock off that might not last as long and have the same quality of leather.
I feel like they should make a new even more luxurious version with adjustable lumber, arm rest and third back panel for head rest. So far this just seems like a pretty art piece that lacks many modern functionalities.
When it comes to ultimate comfort, durability and complete back support, particularly for your lumbar region, Stressless stands head and shoulders above the rest.
I started watching your video about mister beast and now I'm watching your videos about chairs more expensive than my car haha. I enjoy it a lot though, you explain very well and make that subject that is totally new to me super interesting!
Good review, love the research and effort you put into your videos. It makes it stand out and short attention span folks like myself want to watch and not click off
Iconic chair that would look great in any Mid Century Modern (Mid-Mod) home and/or space. Don't know if I'd spend the new price on it but I'd definitely scoop it up on a great used deal.
My parents have the original chair and ottoman for the late 50’s. However the back piece on the chair is broken from me swinging on it as a child. They are stored in my parent’s garage, will take them out one day and try to get the chair repaired.
I was just thinking it would be great if you made a video on this chair and other lounge chairs. Having tried this chair before, I thought the comfort level was just ok and not up to the price tag. I see most people recommend Stressless and I've been quite happy with my Stressless sofa, but a in-depth review from you would be super helpful!
Stumbled an old production model one couple years ago sold for pretty cheap nearby. But my gf said it is mad ugly so I didnt pull the trigger. One of the biggest regrets in my life. So far.
Personally, if you want a chair to last, I probably wouldn't have gone with white. Sure it looks good to start, but 10 years or 20 years from now, it is going to look old and yellow.
I don't think it would be a problem with proper care, the problem is resale, at the end of the day the standard black sells the best, just like in cars, black leather is safe and neutral.
@@venom5809 - Maybe, but white is harder to take care of than any other color. If you sell it soon, no problem. If you want to sell it a decade from now, maybe. But yes, you need to take care of it.
I lucked into a mint, 1980 ELC on Facebook last week for only $1,500cdn. A few days before, I also got a 2017 Stressless Mayfair, for only $400cdn. The Stressless is far more comfortable! I’m 183cm, in a standard Eames, I need to slide down the chair, and lying slightly diagonal so that my head can get supported on the top edge. The Eames is a beauty; there’s no point comparing it to anything else !
I have a more affordable designer option of a Conform Timeout. It's really nice, but not as nice as feeling as the Herman Miller (Vitra here in the UK)...
Nice video, thanks. I like this chair alot. Will buy a replica someday 😀. Another design chair you should look at is the "interstuhl silver 362S". Good and unique design, premium quality (but with premium price).
A majority of "coveted" designs are actually from the 50's, mid century modern is easily the most influential design period when it comes to furniture and home decor so it's weird that you would say otherwise. Also I find it funny the regular size aims for people up to 5'4", I really feel like they should think about pushing that up to atleast 5'8" right? My guess is mostly just people self reporting their preferences when it comes to this and being used to a big oversized lounge style of seating.
if herman miller created a hidden mechanism that would allow you to easily and smoothly adjust the seat incline/decline, raise the arm rests , back rest, and head rest, i think itd be an almost perfect product
i am located in Canada. i bought Walnut , Vicenza Leather , 2023 Dec when it on sales. here in Canada Cad$6500+tax. no shipping cost. fast forward now 2024 Aug, now its discount at CAD$7800+tax, so 20% more, and $500 shipping.. so doesn’t it worth it? does it keep value? you tell me lol 😂
My stepfather, who was an architect, only took one thing from the house when he divorced his first wife: his Eames Chair. I sat it that chair many times, and I will say that it was not the most comfortable chair. The longer you sat, the less comfortable it got. My stepfather was a large man, and he very rarely sat in the chair. He had a large lazy boy which was his main chair. I am guessing that his was from the 1960s. Maybe newer ones are more comfortable. I have never sat in a new one.
you should review stresless and other lounge chairs also pull that ottoman closer its suppose to support you calfs not you feet. Makes a world of difference
I kept it further out for the sake of the video since I needed to get in and out quickly! Man...I want to test a Stressless, but I need to let the product review budget refill after this purchase...LOL
@@Ahnestly stress less is great I have 2 and super comfortable lots of options and models to chose from. You could milk those for awhile. There is a lot they can do. They do couches to but those are really expensive. I wish I know they did and how comfy they could be when we bought our couches.
Check out the "Fields Lounge Chair" by Blu Dot. I found it to be more comfortable than this. Also the Togo Chair by Ligne Roset is also several tiers above this IMO.
I am in my third chair, this one is after the patent expired; and is no longer overpriced Herman Miller . The last two, HM’s no less ; delaminated at the armrest attachment. In fact a friend put his 6ft weight on them to get out from the chair and the plywood sheared off. If you want a chair for changeable sitting position this one is not that comfortable; the IKEA bentwood cantilever chair with leather seat pad is better and can be rocked slightly; at 5’9” yes , head resting needs a turtle neck tuck; not comfortable; the IKEA one is.
People Alwaysssss want cheap furniture , cheap interior ? They don’t know the design process and tedious steps to design timeless design . They just want cheap and the designer and some consultant they just cut their design price , eventually the design industry always fell short and cheap if the notion is it worth it ??? , cheap labor , cheap design fee , cheap and cheap , HM is big company for people who have money and appreciate design and quality go for it , for people who don’t have much stop arguing is it worth it or not just get your self a copy furniture .
That chair looks amazingly comfortable, but even the cheapest one cost more than my ENTIRE set of living room furniture, so... no. Not unless I trip into a Scrooge McDuck vault of money that suddenly somehow becomes mine.
All their leather is top grain. Only one of them is full grain, the rest are corrected grain. The All Grain leather which I have is the full grain leather
Dude, you have no idea about Rolex. It’s the most mass produced luxury watch by far. There 1-2 million Rolexes produced every year. Used Rolex prices are plummeting.
Most luxury watches are plummeting and is not because of mass production, it is because the hype has died down and we are on the edge of a rough recession
Prices are going down because people used to speculate with it which caused the prices to increase insanely, like when a steel watch is as much as the gold version then you know something is wrong
He specifically said Rolex Daytona. You CANNOT go into a store and buy one. Period. Not now, not if you’re on a wait list for 5 years. The watch is not available to you. Same for Rolex Pepsi and other highly sought after stainless steel sport watches. The “plummeting” in value are the used watches going from $35k to $30k. Yes, plummeting, however still double the price from retail. Also, while Rolex makes “millions” of watches, half of those are women’s, half of those are men’s. Half of the men’s are precious metal watches, and the breakdown continues until each authorized dealer gets only a handful of the watches people actually want. Like the watch referred to in this video.
@ So Rolex is a douche bag company that artificially inflates the price of some models by purposely limiting availability. They aren’t any better in quality. Why would you buy from a company like that?
I think you misunderstand how the eams is meant to be used tbh. Its not supose to support your head but instead your shoulders. Use it while on a laptop, reading the paper, or anything else looking forward and youll see what i mean
@@eskamobob8662 I did test it that way and found my neck sore after just a bit. I showcased how the arms are too low to enjoy reading for long periods as well. Also, I’m not sure if what you’re saying is accurate since it’s a lounger (not a reading chair) and the inspiration came from their friend and director Billy Wilder who couldn’t nap on any of the existing lounge chairs of that time.
Buying a piece of furniture for investment and that piece of furniture still in production seems to be pretty risky. You'll probably have to wait many years to recoup the investment and have some rare combination of fabric & finish. Don't get into watches (especially luxury watches).
I thought I responded to this, but not sure what happened. Herman Miller struck one of my videos talking about the replica and threatened to take down more if I didn't remove it. Then they kicked me off their affiliate program and I made a response video showing they unfairly targeted me (other online outlets promoted replicas and were still affiliates of Herman Miller, but only I was being punished for it). My community stepped out and gave HM hell, at which point they reinstated my affiliate status, but I unlisted the eames replica video. Some people are still managing to find it...but I don't even know where the link is!
@@Ahnestly I see.. well thats nuts thank you for explaining all that for me. I feel like if hm were confident in the eames they wouldnt care but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@paulct91 the dimensions are off for the cushions and arms. I don’t believe that can be special ordered? The chairs have been modified underneath the chair as well and I believe the replica company that makes it advertises that they made the chair for shark tank if Reddit is to be believed
no Rolexes have extreme craftmanship watchmaking is hard and designing a watch is even harder also before the 2000s Rolex was not widely considered a luxury brand they were meant to last be and be durable.
@@_8gb_75 yes but they had always been expensive and grew into a status symbol. The reason why eames can be discounted is because they do not see as much appeal in conserving their brand prestige and nature as a display of wealth but rather they prioritize getting good design more accessible to people.
Hey! My configuration is 10k. The cheapest config is 7kish, so with the current sale, it’s 5kish! Hope you were able to use my link, as it helps the channel a LOT! Regardless, congrats on your chair!
I love the design of this chair, but its not very comfortable as it only has one sitting position with that awkward back slope. It's worth every penny and some. The Herman Miller version is beautifully made, but a China copy is a fraction of the price and still quite good. The only error is the copy Ottoman has 5 legs instead of 4. Also, you have to see this design in the context of the 50's and compare it to all the awful designs being produced at the time.

Do a review of the Womb Chair by Eero Saarinen, a sometimes collaborator of Charles and Ray Eames. It's another iconic lounge chair of that era.
goddamn that intro is fire
!!!! We worked hard on that!!
But yes, you need to take care of it.
old & yellow is aesthetic
@@chromastrophe old and yellow...sounds like me
This chair is for me to flex. It'll be my kids' problems when it becomes old and yellow ;-)
Great comment!
I just brought the embody. Now I'm watching this. If herman miller made a bed they would kill the industry.
Herman Miller EAMES is TIMELESS!
Great video, could be interesting to see your reviewing the swan or the egg chair 👌
I have a more affordable designer option of a Conform Timeout. It's really nice, but not as nice as feeling as the Herman Miller (Vitra here in the UK)...
Love my Aeron, one day I'll get an Eames
So being 6 4, it would suck for me.
Wouldn't be ideal I think. But could get a $10 pillow and could solve a lot!
I am 6.4 and I worry there’s going to be zero head support 😢
@@MatadorBW I'm 6'0" and it barely covers half my head.
if herman miller created a hidden mechanism that would allow you to easily and smoothly adjust the seat incline/decline, raise the arm rests , back rest, and head rest, i think itd be an almost perfect product
i am located in Canada. i bought Walnut , Vicenza Leather , 2023 Dec when it on sales. here in Canada Cad$6500+tax. no shipping cost.
fast forward now 2024 Aug, now its discount at CAD$7800+tax, so 20% more, and $500 shipping..
so doesn’t it worth it? does it keep value? you tell me lol 😂
Wow, seeing you and your friend with shoes putting your feet on the white seat almost killed me ^^'
My slippers are in-studio use only. My friend on the other hand...had to resist hurting him...
you should review stresless and other lounge chairs also pull that ottoman closer its suppose to support you calfs not you feet.
I find even the tall version too small for me at 196cm. If only someone would add another piece to the back to support the neck and head.
Get a Stressless Reno like what I have. The back can extend upwards. Stressless recliners are amazing 🙌
Check out the "Fields Lounge Chair" by Blu Dot. I found it to be more comfortable than this.
Also the Togo Chair by Ligne Roset is also several tiers above this IMO.
i think this chair is design not for reading books or using phone but for smoking cigars, drinking whiskey, looking at the ceiling
TERRY WITH THE PILLOW
All the pieces of furniture from the 50s are desirable...
Paid 8 grand for mine. Money well spent
People
Alwaysssss want cheap furniture , cheap interior ? They don’t know the design process and tedious steps to design timeless design . They just want cheap and the designer and some consultant they just cut their design price , eventually the design industry always fell short and cheap if the notion is it worth it ??? , cheap labor , cheap design fee , cheap and cheap , HM is big company for people who have money and appreciate design and quality go for it , for people who don’t have much stop arguing is it worth it or not just get your self a copy furniture .
Sadly the mass replicas has made this the Memes Chair that every bachelor guy has. Also the sitting position is rough for anyone over 5'10"
Still gotta get me one
I can’t believe your friend put his sneakers on that ottoman. Didn’t hear a word he said…. Was just fixated on those shoes.
Thank you. LOL. Yeah...I didn't want to ruin his take...but he's being shamed by all the comments LOL
I like the design. However, I think are over-saturated to the point of predictability. I'd prefer a Barcelona chair.
Did you previously have a comparison of the knock off versions a couple years ago?
The « standard » size is the original size. The « tall » size is the new version updated to human size evolution
That chair looks amazingly comfortable, but even the cheapest one cost more than my ENTIRE set of living room furniture, so... no. Not unless I trip into a Scrooge McDuck vault of money that suddenly somehow becomes mine.
Genuine Leather means reconstituted leather. Definitely not worth it unless somebody cuts in half to prove it is full grain leather.
All their leather is top grain. Only one of them is full grain, the rest are corrected grain. The All Grain leather which I have is the full grain leather
Does it make farts 'disappear', is there a good chair for such things, besides mesh?
Haha I think leather can be cleaned a bit easier than fabric, but don't quote me on that!
4:03 standard is for people 5”4’ and under but the text says opposite?
Could you review the Hbada E3?
the chair : dream 😃
the price : reality 😭
All the furniture in my house combined is less than half the price of the base Eames Chair :(((
White Ash + "sail" prone leather.
I sat on a replica and for some reason, the angles are a nit off on me. The ottoman is a bit high.
The replicas are noticeably more leaned back than the original!
Get a LaZboy. It’s ugly but is very comfortable at a fraction of the cost
Why would you buy from a company like that?
amazing
@Ahnestly saw that later in the review. Tbh your reading posture caught me off gard. I usualy read in my lap and have no issues, but to each their own
@eskamobob8662 that destroys your neck/posture!!
Seeing that guy put his shoes on the ottoman hurt me.
Beautiful chair, but looks worthless if you're 6'3''. Alternatives? Stressless?
I need a few months to save up for another massive purchase 😅
Buying a piece of furniture for investment and that piece of furniture still in production seems to be pretty risky. You'll probably have to wait many years to recoup the investment and have some rare combination of fabric & finish. Don't get into watches (especially luxury watches).
I am 6 4' and still chair is not big enough for me. My head does not comfortably sit on the head rest
My grandpa had a Soviet knock off of this chair
I swear you used to have a video on eames replicas and I cant seem to find it...
I think a lot of people voiced that opinion. $5k vs $1k are 2 completely different markets…but yeah…
timeless... looks like a chair from the 60s
0:43 - Or just special orders, doesn't have to be fakes just due to that alone.
@@paulct91 the dimensions are off for the cushions and arms. I don’t believe that can be special ordered?
The chairs have been modified underneath the chair as well and I believe the replica company that makes it advertises that they made the chair for shark tank if Reddit is to be believed
With all the colors available, and the resources to actually get this chair, bro really bought a white one 😂
I love the white one! Which one would you have gotten??
The Eames is not like Rolex because Rolex is about wealth and Eames is about design.
no Rolexes have extreme craftmanship watchmaking is hard and designing a watch is even harder also before the 2000s Rolex was not widely considered a luxury brand they were meant to last be and be durable.
@@_8gb_75 yes but they had always been expensive and grew into a status symbol. The reason why eames can be discounted is because they do not see as much appeal in conserving their brand prestige and nature as a display of wealth but rather they prioritize getting good design more accessible to people.
Dude I’m seeing the chair on their site for 5k with the ottoman. That is not even near 10k. Anyways, just bought one.
Hey! My configuration is 10k. The cheapest config is 7kish, so with the current sale, it’s 5kish! Hope you were able to use my link, as it helps the channel a LOT! Regardless, congrats on your chair!
@@Ahnestly Yeah like $7500 is about the norm for these when you go into a showroom. You can't even really get them for $5000 used.
If your friends inquire for the authenticity of your chair, they are not friends.
Now I see why House liked that chair so much... at the time I thought It was some IKEA thing XD
LOL
the modern ones doesn't worth 10k so most people will probably get the used vintage ones or replicas.
Poäng gang 4 life!
You look like Lang Lang somehow
7000? Ill just get a used couch from JD Vance instead
8:50 it looks like he had an ACL surgery on his left knee.
Sharp eyes! Exactly correct
